LIKE ST. PAUL IN THE SECOND READING, THE GOOD STEWARD CAN SAY, “DO ALL THAT I DO FOR
THE SAKE OF THE GOSPEL IN THE HOPE OF HAVING A SHARE IN ITS BLESSINGS.”
MESSAGE FROM FATHER TOM
Now our Gospel
readings take us into
Mark’s 2nd
chapter and
there’s another new
twist. Jesus continues to
heal but now, for
another first, he speaks
of the healing in
opposition to the
forgiveness of sin:
“which is easier….” In addition, last week’s
healing concerned leprosy; this week’s
addresses paralysis and the consequences of this
condition in Jesus’ society. In the book of
Leviticus, chapter 21, it states that no one who
“has any defect shall come forward to offer up
the food of his God.” It further states that this
injunction includes anyone “who is blind, or
lame, or who has any disfigurement or
malformation, or a crippled foot or hand, or
who is humpbacked or weakly or walleyed, or
who is afflicted with eczema, ringworm or
hernia.” These people are automatically
excluded from approaching the altar. So what
does Jesus do? In the first reading from Isaiah
God says he is “doing something new!” And
what is that? God says, “I wipe out…your
offenses; your sins I remember no more.” Jesus
does precisely this! Calling the paralytic “child”
(or some translations, “son”) Jesus brings the
fellow into his fellowship, then he restores the
man’s relationship to God and finally he
restores him to the community. Talk about a
holistic approach to healing! However, we
cannot forget the four friends who carried the
paralytic to Jesus and even went so far to open a
hole in the roof. Remember the text says,
“When Jesus saw their faith.” Their faith, their
devotion to Jesus, is important to this healing.
Even the criticisms of the scribes won’t deter
them from getting their friend to Jesus. And
that’s what Paul to arguing to the Corinthians;
he is faithful as God is faithful. Paul isn’t just
writing things they want to hear. No, Paul is
speaking God’s word to them. He is devoted to
God through Jesus and, no matter what they
want or expect to hear, Paul will write what is
necessary for their salvation. May we have that
same devotion to one another!
