    President’s Message

Membership:Historically speaking, Winter has always been a typically slow time during the SMGCC golf and social calendar. Its cold outside, the golf course is brown and all you can dream of is brighter days. That was the past.

We had a great January this year with a very successful Food and Beverage performance led by Joe and Jason that included our outstanding family events but a number of private parties as well. Keep us in mind when you are thinking about a family or corporate event. I know you will be pleasantly surprised with all the progress that has been made.

I ran out of my allotted Presidential diatribe space last month but wanted to remind everyone about some of the things we can do for our membership in Paul’s Pro Shop. As you know, we haven’t been a club with a large amount of merchandise sitting on the racks and that will most likely continue but we have accounts with most of the best brands around and can order you anything custom in their catalogs. We now have access to Turtleson, as well as 2 Under Par Golf, which is a new Rickie Fowler sponsored athletic brand, in addition to all the brands we have had in the past.

Finally, I mentioned last month about our need for some serious updates to our building. In the last year we have had a number of issues related directly to the age and condition of our building. From HVAC units to the Great Flood in the business office, these problems will continue without some tender love and care. We are in a great financial position and have no interest in squandering the hard work put forth in the last ten years, so it is imperative for us to be good financial stewards of SMGCC resources. We want to be as transparent as possible so don’t hesitate to ask questions.

Get out and play when the weather allows. Pat and his team undertake a lot of heavy lifting during this time of the year to get the course ready for Spring so tell him how much we appreciate all they do for us.

    Note from the Club Manager

There is lots to do at the Club in February. Pasta Night and a Movie Thursday the 6th, Trivia night is Saturday the 8th, Valentines Dinner Friday the 14th and Family Bingo Sunday the 16. These are great fun events that will shake of the cold and warm you up.

January saw a sold-out Trivia night with the “Know It All” team taking the honors. Pasta and Movie night will feature the movie “Moana”. Kid’s can come in characters costumes to make it extra fun!

We hope you have tried Chef Jason’s new menu items for the winter featuring Asian Cashew Chicken, Baby Wedge Salad and Baby Back Rib appetizer plate along with our weekend specials.

See you at the Club,Joe Fidelibus, Clubhouse Manager

To the membership:Effective January 1, 2020, all credit card usage

will incur an additional 3.5% processing fee.To avoid this processing fee, members may still choose:

    1. For those who bank online, you can still pay online.2. Use a bank draft to pay. ACH costs the club very little

    3. Pay by check.

These fees are now generally accepted by merchants everywhere and the move allows us to better position our resources as we move forward.

This move by the board will also eliminate any dues increase for the following year.Regards,

    The SMGCC Board of Directors

Out of the RoughJanuary was what we expect. We saw temps in the teens, above average rainfall, frozen greens and even a few sunny days that were tailor-made for golf. I hope you were among those taking advantage of those bonus play days. Looking ahead, it’s worth noting that in the last 3 years, the months of February have dumped a combined 34.62” rain on the club. I’m optimistic we will break that cycle this year! Maybe we’ll get lucky and see a little snow? The team has been forced indoors a great deal over the past few weeks and we’ve taken full advantage of this opportunity. Our behind the scenes accomplishments include evicting more than a few rodents and getting our workspaces cleaned and well-organized. Even in the most dismal weather, we’ve been hard at work preparing for a successful 2020 golf season. We’ve made new tee markers, painted most of our course accessories and are now servicing our small tools, mowers and carts.

Projects remaining on the course include removal of a few more dead trees such as back left of 10 green, back and right of the 6th and 14th greens and near the left edge of the range net. We hope to get a few irrigation heads repaired by the end of the month as well. This is the best time of year to close our irrigation system for repairs.

Greens as scheduled to be aerified the week of March 1st. This is a tentative schedule. Spring weather is very unpredictable and we need dry conditions to complete these crucial procedures. In the event of inclement weather, we will postpone until the first available opportunity thereafter.

During the month of February you will notice blue dye on our dormant Bermuda and Zoysiagrass. This dye is used to indicate our application of preemergent herbicide or similar products. If necessary, you may notice irrigation heads running as a means of moving the product into the soil. As a reminder, winter weather can often delay or prohibit traffic on the golf course. Any closures are applied with your safety and the health of the golf course in mind. Please make note of any signage posted at the practice facilities, 1st tee and 10th tees. In closing, please make a habit of checking in with the golf shop when you arrive at the Club. This is the best way to get the most up to date information regarding the days playing conditions.

    Golf News

The Tournament Program has been released and hoping to get another large contingency of participants. The Tournament Program is one of the best deals in all of Chattanooga. For only $200, you can prepay for 13 tournaments that would cost you $435 if you paid for each individually. We also have a discounted Program Fee for the Ladies. The Ladies program fee is $75. Please contact the golf shop if you would like to sign up.

The remainder of the Tournament Schedule has also been completed. Check in the golf shop for the 2020 Tournament Schedule magnet. We should have them available in a couple of weeks. These are a great reference to keep handy to see what is going on at the club. I would especially like to thank David O’Neal, Haven Burns, Dean Hogue and Craftique Manufacturing for generously donating the magnets.

There is still time to purchase your 2020 Prepaid Guest Rounds. From now through February 29th all golf members may once again pre-purchase up to 6 guest rounds for use during the 2020 calendar year. Prepaid Guest Rounds can be purchased for $50 each + tax. This is a $20 savings on normal weekly rates and a $30 savings on weekend rates. • Prepaid Guest Rounds may be purchased through February 29th, 2020.• Prepaid Guest Rounds may be used anytime during the 2020 calendar year.• Any unused Guest Rounds will be forfeited after Dec 31st, 2020. • Prepaid Guest Rounds are subject to the Club’s Guest Policy.• Prepaid Guest Rounds are non-transferrable.

For any questions or to purchase your guest rounds, please contact the Pro Shop at 886-5767 ext. 226.

Now that we are closing in on the golf season, it is very important to check-in with the golf shop before going to play. This is imperative for many different reasons. Checking in helps the Club accurately keep track of our rounds throughout the year. More importantly, this lets us convey any course conditions and maintenance work happening on the course. This keeps the course in its best condition as well as keeping our maintenance staff safe.
