ebruary is the shortest month of the year and the last month of solar winter inour Northern hemisphere. Vegas PBS viewers will suffer no shortness of sub-stantive programming or any frost that chills their spirit of exploration. For our adventure seekers, we veer into the unknown with a lively explorer in Expeditionwith Steve Backshall airing on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. Backshall pushes his team to takeus on descents into the caves of the Maya underworld and kayaking on Himalayan white-water. Wild discoveries continue with new episodes of NOVA, starting on February 5 at 8p.m. with NOVA: Polar Extremes. In this episode, NOVA uncovers the bizarre history ofthe poles, from miles-thick ice sheets to warm polar forests teeming with life.

The roots of African American History Month trace back to 1915 and historian CarterG. Woodson. Woodson is credited with promoting February as the month of commemora-tion, after attending a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 13th Amendment whichabolished slavery in the United States. More than 100 years later, Americans continue tohonor the accomplishments, hard work, history and sacrifices made by Americans withAfrican ancestry.

Original programming on Channel 10 this month follows a number of notable AfricanAmericans who have left their legacy in our history. Starting with Finding Your Roots:Slave Trade, airing on February 11 at 8 p.m. Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. journeys to theunexpected places where the ancestors of his guests were scattered by slavery, upendingtheir notions of African American history. On Friday, February 14 at 11:30 p.m. tune infor Fannie Lou Hamer: Stand Up, a documentary that examines the life of a civil rightslegend and her work in the struggle for voting rights. American Masters has three specialsfor music fans this month – Sammy Davis Jr.: American Masters on February 2 at 11a.m., Charley Pride: American Masters on February 7 at 11 p.m., and Miles Davis: Birthof the Cool: American Masters on February 25 at 9 p.m. With full access to the archivesof the Miles Davis Estate, this film features never-before-seen footage, including studioouttakes from Miles Davis’ recording sessions, rare photos and interviews.

Vegas PBS worked with the UNLV Libraries to produce a local history documentary,African Americans:The Las Vegas Experience.This program, available on the Vegas PBSwebsite, documents the momentous events and civil conflicts that defined the AfricanAmerican experience in Las Vegas during the Civil Rights era. An extension of the docu-mentary was created for local educators with a curriculum guide, also available on ourwebsite. We expect extensive use of these materials this month by local teachers andstudents.

ducation is a central theme in the PBS experience, inspiring and educating view-

ers of all ages. Vegas PBS puts this into practice by providing quality education-

al outreach experiences and resources for educators, professionals, parents, and

children. Through its educational media services, Vegas PBS serves to provide

trusted, high-tech/high-touch services.

The Vegas PBS Special Needs Resource Library (SNRL) is one such service that delivers a

powerful means of support for those with special needs, their families and service providers.

A grant-funded library, originally developed to provide descriptive video for the blind and

closed captioning for the deaf, has grown to address a multitude of special needs such as

autism, language delay, anger management, and many more. The resources provided in this

free-loan library are available throughout the State of Nevada and collaboration with more

than 40 entities and 70 schools is ongoing to ensure that the most up-to-date and essential

resources are available. With more than 23,000 pieces of educational media circulated dur-

ing the last year and 1,197 visits to the library, this library has proven to be a vital resource.

Vegas PBS’ Ready To Learn program strives to

improve children’s learning through high-quality, high-

touch educational resources designed with research

and community needs in mind. In response to a

national study that found nearly half of parents do not feel confident supporting their chil-

dren’s science learning, our team developed The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!

Family and Community Learning workshops. A recent parent participant noted, “We liked the

activities at the various stations. They were fun for my daughter, interactive, and helped her

learn the concepts through discovery.” Those interested in attending the workshops can find

additional information on the Vegas PBS Ready To Learn website, vegaspbs.org/rtl. Ready To

Learn is also engaging the community in Meet The Helpers, an initiative designed to introduce

children to community helpers and practice emergency preparedness. Research has shown that

introducing children to community helpers in a safe and fun environment can help them react

agent, Randy Weaver had failed to appear in court and law enforcement was

tasked with bringing him in. For months, the Weavers had been holed up on

their property with a cache of firearms, including automatic weapons. When

federal agents crossed paths with members of the family, a firefight broke

out. The standoff that mesmerized the nation would leave Weaver injured,

his wife and son dead, and some convinced that the federal government was

out of control. This is a riveting account of

Country Music Live at the Ryman,

Sanditon on Masterpiece Sunday, February 23 from 8 - 10 p.m.Jane Austen was chronically ill with a mysterious disease in early 1817,

when she started work on a witty and delightful novel set at a struggling

resort aimed to be the next fashionable playground in early 1800s England.

She never finished it. Now, noted screenwriter Andrew Davies picks up Aus-

ten’s plot and takes it in a glorious and satisfying direction. The final two

episodes of the series will air back-to-back. In episode seven, Sanditon’s

regatta approaches and the success of the resort hangs in the balance—as

do assorted romances. How will lovers fair in the marriage game? Then the

series finale takes place on the night of the Midsummer Ball, where ro-

mance, jealousy and betrayal fill the air. Events conspire to leave Charlotte

and the Parker family facing difficult choices.

A Concert Celebrating the Film by Ken Burns Friday, February 28 at 9 p.m.In celebration of the eight-part country music docu-

mentary series by Ken Burns, this concert hosted by

Burns features performances by Dierks Bentley, Rosanne

Cash, Rodney Crowell, Rhiannon Giddens, Vince Gill,

Kathy Mattea, Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show,

Ricky Skaggs, Marty Stuart, Asleep at the Wheel, Holly

Call the Midwife Season 8 Marathon Sunday, February 23 from 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Return to Nonnatus House in 1964, as the midwives continue their care of the poor in the East End of London. It is a time of change both in Poplar and throughout the world, and everyone is excited for the Queen’s Royal Birth. With the additions of two new Sisters, who have been sent to live and work with the

team in Poplar, Nonnatus House feels full once more. The nuns and nurses face a variety of challenging issues such as interracial adoption, cleft palate and sickle cell. Though the Great Depression rages and war looms, the eyes of the world areon Yankee Stadium in New York City where German boxer Max Schmeling and Americanboxer Joe Louis are squaring off for the heavyweight championship of the world.The pressureon each fighter is enormous. Joe Louis is not only fighting for the honor of the country, he isholding the hopes of all of black America in his fists. For Max Schmeling, the fight will be ademonstration of Hitler's racial theories. Theirs was a rivalry that would draw in two nationsinching closer to war and take the measure of two men who had been fighting all their lives,men who became reluctant symbols of equality and supremacy, democracy and fascism.

Great Performances at the Met: Madama ButterflyThursday, February 6 at 9 p.m.Soprano Hui He plays the tragic title role with tenor Bruce Sledge as the naval

officer who abandons her in Puccini’s classic masterpiece. Pier Giorgio Morandi

conducts Anthony Minghella’s sweeping production. The opera tells the story of

a young Japanese geisha who clings to the belief that her arrangement with a

visiting American naval officer is a loving and permanent marriage. The opera

takes place in the Japanese port city of Nagasaki at the turn of the twentieth

century, where temporary marriages for foreign sailors were not unusual.

The story triggers ideas about cultural and sexual imperialism for people far

removed from the opera house.The lyric beauty of Puccini’s score, especially the

music for the thoroughly believable lead role, has made the opera timeless.
