Community Presbyterian Church

The world is constantly telling us “seeing is believing,” and yet God tells us through His word “believing is seeing.” Don’t you just love the way that God seems to always turn things upside down. Just look at the Sermon on the Mount as Jesus tells us that “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” The words poor and kingdom really don’t look right in the same sentence, and yet Jesus Christ continues in the Sermon and in the life that He lived on earth to set everything on its head. He challenged the Pharisees; He challenged His family; He challenged the Disciples, and in His word and the life that He lives in us, He challenges us too.

Only this kind of challenge could stir me beyond what I saw of myself and my surroundings. When God started tapping on my shoulder, I was a stay at home mom of 4. Entering into the ministry was a complete impossibility to me. How could God want to send me of all people to seminary??? As part of a 3rd generation who knew Mobile, Alabama as home, the thought of moving to another state to go back to school was ludicrous, especially with 4 kids. God has the most incredible sense of humor. I went to Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary with 5 kids, one who was still in diapers. My husband, Paul, and I packed up our home and Lacy, Matthew, Michael, Nicholas, and Hope and moved to Austin, Texas into a 1,000 square foot apartment. To the outside world (and to my parents), this looked like an impossible feat.

That was in 2001. In 2003, my husband decided to join me at seminary. How much more impossible could this situation look!!! And yet, God, who is Jehovah Jireh (the Lord provides), did just that. He carried my family through seminary and to Bartlesville, Oklahoma for my first pastorate as an associate. After about 5 years of living in Oklahoma, the Lord impressed upon me that it was time to follow my husband, and that is how we found our way to Zelienople, PA where my husband pastored for 7 years and I became a certified Interim/Transitional Minister. In PA, I worked for 3 different churches as an Intentional Interim/Transitional. As our youngest went off to college, my husband joined me in transitional work in Newport, RI. Today Paul, my husband, is a Transitional Minister in Sumter, SC. We continue to journey and follow wherever He leads us. Paul will be joining me here in Vacaville in early July after he helps the church launch their Pastor Search Committee. Journeying with God is amazing! When we let go of what we see as what we believe and allow God to lead into what we cannot see, oh, the places where He leads. I am looking forward to meeting y’all (yes, I am Southern, and “y’alls” will come tripping out) and I look forward to getting to know y’all within the next year as we seek together to find where God is leading Community Presbyterian Church. So, buckle up! There is an exciting and amazing journey that awaits us as we lean into and follow God and fulfill Jesus’ commission for us as the body of Christ!

“For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not

to do whatever you want.” Galatians 5:17

Greetings Folks,

Our adventure in faith continues as we head into February! January brought about the

closure of a long chapter in our church’s story as we said goodbye to Pastor Mark. Now, we

begin to write a new chapter under the leadership of our transitional Pastor, Kimberly Mer-

rill. What part will each of us take in writing this story? What work will we each take on that

actually produces fruit? Will we be willing to let go of our expectations, desires, or traditions

to go deeper with God and to see His will be done at CPC? I hope so, but one thing is certain:

the continuing transformation of our hearts and our church cannot simply be willed into

action. We cannot simply work harder to bring about change, and we cannot just learn new

practices to overcome the challenges that lie ahead. What we need, the only thing that can

produce real transformation, is the power of Holy Spirit.

Everyone, Christian or otherwise, wants some sort of change for the better in their

lives. It’s probably safe to say that most Christians want to see more evident fruit from their

personal walk with God. Why might we know so many Bible verses yet, not become more like

Jesus? Because information does not equal transformation! We all seek various methods of

self-improvement, spiritual or otherwise, hoping to elicit personal growth or change…which

is why the self-help book section is usually the largest section of any bookstore! Here’s the

problem: leaving the Gospel and seeking some other method of change will ultimately prove

fruitless. So, how do we consistently access the transforming power of God? With the

continual rediscovery of the Gospel! If we don’t have the Gospel in our hearts, then we don’t

have it period. If all we have (or had) is church, then we have (had) nothing at all. The Spirit of

God has to be the one to change our hearts.

Discovery in general is always an adventure! And our faith journey is the most epic and

ongoing adventure of them all! Who is God? How is He working in our lives? Who are we and

what is going on in our hearts? How do we become more like Christ? What lengths would we

go to seek answers to these questions? Would we trade the greatest of adventures, the

pursuit of God, for tradition, comfort, predictability, or empty religious practices? I pray not,

and I pray that the Spirit of God will continue to guide us all into His truth and wisdom and

that the power of the Gospel will be released into our lives every single day we live. AMEN!

Peace and thanks to you all,

Brendan Kavanagh

DO NOT FEED THE BEARS!

Every year in Yosemite, park rangers pull out hundreds of bear carcasses out of the woods after the big thaw of winter. Bears are dying in an alarming rate because people are not heeding the warning signs that are posted all over the area that reads: “DO NOT FEED THE BEARS”. When people are feeding the bears, they feel powerful and important. They may feel that they are contributing in some way to nature and doing the bear a favor by feeding the animal. However, what they are doing is teaching the bear NOT to forage for their own food. I believe that Christians do the same thing, but in this scenario, Christians are the bears and have forgotten how to forage for ourselves. This month (and possible the next), the Youth Group will be learning to “forage” for them-selves. We will be learning how to get what God wants for us out of scripture from our own reading through a simple technique called S.O.A.P. The students will then share what God has shown them from their study to the Youth Group. Pray for our group as they embark on this journey of discovering how to “forage”. If you have or know of a teenager who can use an experience like this to, text me at 916-225-5610 or email at [email protected]

Hello Friends!

We are well on our way into this new year and new decade here at Community Pres. and I for one am looking

forward to all the ways the Holy Spirit will move among his people here in Vacaville.

Quite often I’ve felt God press on my heart a reoccurring theme each year. Last year I kept hearing the word

“SURRENDER” come to mind through many situations in my life, both here at church and in my life in general. And

this year so far I keep hearing God say “Don’t worry, I have a plan!” In her first message to us, Pastor Kimberly said

that worry and faith are direct opposites of each other. And in a quote I’ve seen a few place it states “Worry is

believing that God won’t get it right.” There are so many things that I worry about and yet if I get quiet and listen,

God reminds me that HE has the plan all worked out and I need only to follow HIM! Something that I’m certainly

JUST BEGINNING to more fully understand. So I ask that you join me in praying that we together would begin to

fully trust what God will do in His church and the community of Vacaville.

WORSHIP NEEDS YOU! If you or anyone you know might be interested in joining the worship team, please drop

me an email, text, call or even come talk to me. Specifically, I am searching for more musicians (keyboard, piano,

guitar, etc.) but if there are others interested in singing or helping in the sound booth, we can set up a rotating

schedule for each service.

One last note – we’ve implemented a “song of the month” as a way to get more acquainted with a few new wor-

ship songs. For the month of January we learned “Yes I Will”, which has been a joy to watch others really engaging

in worship through the song. The song of the month for February is “King of Kings” by Hillsong and if you wish for

me to send you a video link to it, let me know! OH! And if you need a copy of the book Holy Roar which Brendan

Kavanagh referenced in his message on January 19th, let me know!

Blessings to you as we WORSHIP THE LORD TOGETHER! Becki Fulton
