Austin Newcomers Welcome Mat February 2019 Vol. 72, No. 7
It’s February, the middle of winter, and what is there to
do? Are you looking forward to getting out in the garden
and bringing it to life? This month our luncheon program
is one you won’t want to miss. We are lucky to have a
representative from Travis County Master Gardeners to
help us get started.
Master Gardeners have impressive credentials. They are
members of the local community who have spent 50
hours of training with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service
learning everything about plants, landscaping and gar-
dening. They volunteer in the community sharing their
knowledge with enthusiasm. Master Gardener Kirk Wal-
den will share his presentation titled “Native and Well-
Adapted Plants: Winning Combinations.” Kirk will have
time to answer questions after his presentation.
His presentation will identify that the first step to success-
ful gardening in Central Texas is to choose the right
plants. The next step is to combine them in ways so they
thrive with each other to present a pleasing palate in your
garden space year-round. Garden size, light, water and
soil will be taken into consideration. Participants will
come away with a list of different ornamental groupings
suitable for five different garden sites.
Kirk Walden is a hands-
on experiential gardener.
While he appreciates the
cerebral aspects of
gardening, he revels in
the visceral experience of
digging in the dirt. When
he moved to Austin in
1998, the home had vir-
tually no landscaping,
mostly just limestone and
cedars. His determination to beautify it led to an avoca-
tion as a serious gardener that culminated in Travis Coun-
ty Master Gardener certification in 2014.

President’s Message
You’re Purr-fect, Valentine, Valentine, You’re Awesome, You Rock, Val-
entine.
Remember the valentines we got as kids and the excitement you felt
when handing out valentine’s at school? I wish each of you that same
excitement this Valentine’s Day. Austin Newcomers have many won-
derful special events this month such as: Homestead Craft Village,
Waco, with Daytrippers; Cockrell School of Engineering touring the
30,000 square feet facility with Hello Austin!; The McNay Museum
sponsored by Art Treks. Give these new events a try, and become a
believer that Austin Newcomers is your best ever Valentine.
What I love about the days leading up to Valentine’s Day are the sen-
sory delights everywhere I look. The flowers are so beautiful with col-
ors spilling out in floral arrangements in grocery stores. The roadsides
vendors catch my attention by their display of flowers trying to cap-
ture our purchase dollars.
Lucky for us, our February luncheon is about preparing your garden.
This presentation will provide us several options for creating a garden
filled with a profusion of colorful plants and flowers.
I was researching a love poem to add to my message and the follow-
ing quote resonated with me because when flying, I cringe when I
hear a fellow traveler cough.
As it has been said:
Love and a cough
cannot be concealed.
Even a small cough.
Even a small love.
~Anne Sexton

Out-to-Lunch Bunch
When: Friday, February 22, 11:30 a.m.
Where: Hopfield's
3110 Guadalupe, #400, Austin, 78705
Cost: Separate checks
RSVP: Online by Wednesday, February 20
10 a.m.
Details: Hopfield's is sort of in my neighborhood, so I drive by it often thinking that it's just another UT "dive" near campus.
My precociously culinary granddaughter (age 14) wanted go there for her recent birthday dinner, and the food was fantastic.
Even nicer, the restaurant (actually a gastropub offering a broad craft beer selection & French-inspired fare) is bigger than it
looks and has a great rustic-chic setting. Best of all, behind the "pub" part of the gastro-pub, it's quiet and totally removed
from the bar action. The hamburger is touted to be the best in town (definitely gets my vote!), the mussels and salad nicoise
get high acclaim, and the frites will definitely set your New Year's diet back, even if you're really disciplined.
Come join us for lunch and see if I'm over-selling. Bet you'll decide I'm not!
