In the delicate ecosystems of the rainforests and des-erts of the world, termites are known as green machines that help recycle plant material and pull nutrients into the soil, but here in the U.S, they are a destructive force that cause 5 billion dollars in property damage to home owners every year.

There are more than 2500 species of termites and none of them ever sleep.

The most common species in California are the dampwood, drywood, and the Formosan Subterranean. Swarming activity slows down in colder states, but here in the San Gabriel Valley, the perfect conditions are

present all year. Most homeowners know

that termites eat wood, but what they might not know is that constant excess mois-ture is conducive to infesta-tions.

Leaks in roofs, plumbing, A/C units, and irrigation

systems should be cor-rected as soon as possible and wood that contacts soil needs be treated.

Termites swarm for

many reasons including a recent rainfall, warm weather, overcrowding in the colony, and reaching reproductive maturity.

A queen termite has a life expectancy of 30-50 years and can produce a thousand eggs per day.

Signs of an infestation include mud tubes along foundations, accumulation of wings or droppings, vis-ibly damaged wood, spongy floors, and raised sections of drywall.

It is wise to get checkups from our doctors as we age and so is having our home inspected yearly.

Constant excessive moisture provides breeding ground for termites

Signs of an infestation include mud tubes along foundations, accumulation of wings or droppings, visibly damaged wood, spongy floors, and raised sections of drywall.

Blue Star Banner celebrates 15 yearsThe Blue Star Ban-

ner family thanks the public for the many years of support for their program that recognizes and hon-ors military person-nel.

The Blue Star Ban-ner program was be-gun by Sharon John-son who continues to lead the program today.

Johnson was angered by an experience of her brother-in-law upon his return from a tour of duty in the Vietnam War.

Years later in 2004 as pub-lic support was waning for the Iraq War, Johnson decided to do

Learn to detect water leaks like the pros in free workshop

something to show appreciation and support for the military, es-pecially those from her home town, and started action to hang a banner of support across Las Tunas Drive.

Johnson collected approxi-mately 2,000 signatures to sat-isfy City Council requirements.

But she felt she needed to do even more. She wanted to recognize each active or retired armed forc-es soldier and sailor.

With the help of her supporters, she raised funds, donating money from her own savings, to cover the cost of banners along Las Tunas Drive.

These Blue Star banners now hang along Temple City Boule-vard as well.

And so for the past 15 years the grassroots Blue Star program has served with valor by show-ing the military how much Tem-ple City residents care.

California American Water will host a free water leak detection workshop from 6-8 p.m., March 20, at the City of Rosemead Rec-reation Center, 3936 N. Muscatel Ave, Rosemead, CA 91770.

The workshop will teach home-owners how to determine if there is a leak on their property and how to isolate the leak.

Participants will also learn how to fix some of the most common indoor and outdoor household leaks, along with understanding how to conserve water by using new technologies.

The indoor portion will cover faucets, shower heads, tub divert-ers, toilet flappers and water heat-er relief valves.

The outdoor portion will look at hose spigots, garden faucets, compression washers, hose clamp rings, hose-end grommets, irrigation control valves and low head drainage.

Irrigation leaks the size of a dime will waste

nearly 6,300 gallons of water a month. Old inefficient toi-lets can waste up to 13,000 gallons a year. Leaks can be present anywhere so every week should be Fix-A-Leak-Week.

Green Media Creations’ leak detection workshops will help participants deter-mine potential water leaks that can lead to several thou-sands of gallons of water waste as well as severe dam-age to infrastructure. With the proper training and tools, leaks can be fixed before they become a costly issue.

RSVP for the workshop by phoning Robert Stoerch-le, 626-614-2516.

For other customer service issues, phone the Customer Service Center at California American Water from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 1-888-237-1333. Hours: 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Customer service is available for emergencies 24/7.

According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the 11 most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That’s why it’s critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre-inspection yourself if you know what you’re looking for, and knowing what you’re looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones.To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled “11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection” has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, call toll-free 1-888-300-4632 and enter 3003. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn’t cost you the sale of your home.

11 Critical Home Inspection Traps to be Aware of Weeks Before Listing Your Home for Sale

Playfactory Preschool cel-ebrates the one-year anniver-sary of its Temple City Chap-ter of Good SamariTots this month.

Since the first Temple City Good SamariTots meeting/service project, Feb. 14, 2018 when the children made and delivered Valentine’s cards to senior residents at a local convalescent facility, they have had monthly meetings about various needs in the community.

The children have made and delivered

Temple City Good Samaritots celebrate one year anniversaryspecial items to Meals on Wheels, a local show-er program, the Temple City Fire Department, the Temple City Sher-iff Department,

San Gabriel Valley Humane Society, TC City Hall, seniors in the community, and more.

During every meeting there is a proj-ect made for a specific need in the com-munity, a story is read about that subject,

and, if possible, they go togeth-er to deliver the projects they have made.

Under the motto “Little Hands Do-ing Big Deeds”, Good SamariTots is a non-profit offering like-minded parents the opportunity to connect and teach their children how to make a difference in their community.

Founded in 2016 and currently in sev-en communities, their mission is “Foster-ing compassion and social responsibility via community service projects geared toward tots.”

For more information, visit goodsa-maritots.org and check out their Face-book page which can be accessed by clicking on “Find a Meeting,” then on the FACEBOOK link under the Temple City Location. For more information on upcoming meetings, email [email protected].

Pet of the Month

Memphis is a one-year old Mastiff-Shepherd mix boy with a beautiful and soft tan coat and black markings on his face. San He was found in San Gabriel Park with a collar embedded into his neck. Memphis is recovering and learning to trust others again but it is clear that he has

a sweet, gentle, and playful personality. His adoption fee is $145, which includes spay surgery, a microchip, first vaccinations and a free wellness check-up at a participating veterinarian.

Visit the San Gabriel Valley Humane Society from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday

through Sunday, at 851 E. Grand Ave., San Gabriel, CA 91776.

Visit www.sgvhumane.org for information and photos of all the pets. The shelter also provides animal control and licensing services to Temple City and is the friendly,

local choice for low cost spay/neuter and vaccination services for your pet.
