Many Canadians take the time to observe Groundhog Day on February 2nd each year. Groundhog Day focuses on the concept of a
groundhog coming out of its home in mid-winter to “predict” if spring is on its way in
the northern hemisphere. According to the legend, if it’s a sunny day
and the groundhog sees its shadow it becomes frightened and returns to its hole to
sleep and winter continues for six more weeks. If it doesn’t see its shadow, it
remains outside because the worst of the winter is over and warmer weather is on its
way.

News from the
FISH department!
We are excited to have another tank of
beautiful fish located upstairs in the
Felden unit. Many of us are hypnotized
by their peaceful and serene nature,
creating a calming effect for a few
moments in our day. Watching fish swim
has many therapeutic benefits. It helps
decrease stress and anxiety and
energize the mind.

To Do List From God
I ran my life in search of worldly things; My time and will were firmly in control.
I thought I had no need for what God brings; I gave no heed to murmurs from my soul.
“You’re planning, doing all the time,” it said, “But something else is missing deep inside.
Your mind is whirling, but your heart is dead, So turn to God and let go of your pride.”
I did, and God said, “Here’s My plan for you:
Give your life to Me, and just let go. Have faith and pray, and read the Bible through,
And you’ll have blessings more than you can know.”
So simple, yet it brings me perfect peace, Living life for God the way I should.
Direction, purpose, fullness and release—
Life with God is very, very good.

OUR HOMEMADE VALENTINE
By Richard Frankish (Bowden Resident) Written in 1996
Ruth gave birth to our first child, Lynn, on June 24th, 1945, while I was overseas. After experiencing the
last stages of pregnancy during hot weather she vowed that the rest of our children would be born in the early
spring about two years apart.
When Lynn was almost two, we were living in a one bedroom suite in the Dawson Huts. The Canadian
University Returned Men’s Association had persuaded the City and the Government to finance a scheme
whereby the former prefab U.S. army barracks at Dawson Creek could be dismantled, shipped to Edmonton
and reassembled to provide low rental housing for the veterans, with families, who were enrolled at the
University. The suites were allotted on a priority basis depending on the number of children and years of war
service. One bedroom suites were equipped with only a shower but two and three bedroom ones had a bathtub
in a larger bathroom. Realizing that we would be entitled to apply for a two bedroom suite, as soon as our
second child arrived, we took the necessary steps to assure that he or she would be born in February of 1948.
In our court our most friendly neighbors were Effie and Walter Biggs and Frieda and Frank Dorsey. They
had two children each so we baby sat each other’s kids and shared major appliances to some extent. Biggs and
Dorseys both had telephones. Frank and I owned cars. Generally we helped each other whenever necessary and
visited back and forth for coffee when time off from studies permitted.
Ruth enjoyed a fairly normal pregnancy. Since I was overseas for the duration of her first, it was a new
experience for me. As the end of her term approached, she arranged for her mother to come from Calgary to
look after Lynn until Ruth was home from the hospital and able to take over.
Fortunately, on Friday the 13th of February, I didn’t have any lectures so I was at home after lunch, when
Ruth started to lose water. I rushed Lynn over to Effie’s for the afternoon and phoned Dr. Day. He said, “Bring
her to the hospital with the first pains.” They started right after supper so Lynn was taken back to Bigg’s. It
was a miserably cold day but our 1931 Chev started and I rushed Ruth to the University Hospital. As soon as
she was admitted I returned home, fetched Lynn, bathed her and put her to bed. Afterward I washed the
clothes, put them through the wringer then hung them out on the clothesline to freeze dry. After cleaning up the
supper dishes I went to Dorsey’s for coffee to be near the phone. Finally I came home at midnight but shortly
afterward they received a call from the hospital announcing that our son was born at 11:29. Frank kindly
volunteered to stay with Lynn then I drove over to see Ruth and our plump little Valentine baby. He weighed 7
pounds, 10 ounces and looked very healthy. We were both delighted to have a son.
Valentine’s Day was a busy one for me. I dressed and fed Lynn then vacuumed the house and tidied up.
After lunch I put her down for her nap then, when she was sound asleep, I left the key with Effie and drove to
the hospital for visiting from 2:00 to 3:00. Ruth was very well and had all her announcement cards ready for
me to mail. Brian looked sturdy and fat but he was asleep. Since Ruth’s mother was expected on the train I
drove directly to the station but she didn’t arrive on the 4:00. On my return home, a waiting telegram informed
me that she would be on the Chinook at 10:00 that night. Effie graciously invited us for supper. Afterwards I
bathed Lynn and put her to sleep then made up a bed on the couch in the kitchen for Ruth’s mom. Later, Effie
stayed in our suite while I fetched Mom Smaill from the station.
The following morning was spent acquainting her with the house routines then having lunch. Again our
good neighbor, Effie, looked after Lynn while I took mom to the maternity ward to visit Ruth and see her first
grandson.
On Monday I came down off cloud nine and returned to classes in the Faculty of Agriculture. However,
Lynn was in good hands as she had spent the first nine months of her life in her Grannie’s Calgary home.
When I was able to make a hospital visit that evening, I found Ruth quite strong and sitting up. Brian slept a lot
and didn’t cry while I was there. After more evening visits that week I brought them home on Saturday
afternoon. Lynn was tickled pink to have a baby brother. She kept going to the little crib to peak at him.
It took Ruth nine months to construct our homemade valentine but it was well worth the effort. We have
thoroughly enjoyed having him. I had received my first degree and Brian was two years old before we were
allotted a two bedroom suite with a bathtub!
