The energy we deliver comes from lots of places, and goes to lots of places too. But this community isn’t just a place to us. We live here, we work here, and we make it our business to make the towns and counties we serve in Wisconsin better places to do both of those things. So we invest in our communities, and strive to give back to the places we’re proud to call home. Visit xcelenergy.com to learn more.

WE PUT OUR ENERGY INTO DELIVERING MORE THAN ENERGY AROUND HERE.

Free Trade is Critical to the Future of Wisconsin and Hudson

one of the most closely watched political issues in the business world today is the future of the north American Free trade Agreement (nAFtA). it seems like only yesterday i was in college writing

a paper on the merits of the arguments for and against the newly proposed nAFtA. that’s a lie, it feels like centuries ago. the internet was not yet available to the public so i had to do all of my research using microfiche and printed volumes of the congressional record. What primitive times we lived in!

nearly 25 years later, many of the same debates that surrounded the initial approval of nAFtA are at the center of negotiations between the United States, canada, and mexico on the continuation of the agreement for another five year period. Wisconsin politicians on both sides of the aisle have written open letters or made public comments asking for particular reforms to nAFtA, but what you have not heard from them are calls for withdrawing from the agreement similar to the threats made by President trump. the reality is that no matter how flawed nAFtA may be, free trade with canada and mexico is vital to economic well-being of Wisconsin.

the U.S. chamber of commerce ranks Wisconsin second among states that would be most

negatively impacted by a withdrawal from nAFtA (trailing only michigan and their auto industry). it is no wonder, as 45% of all exports from Wisconsin ($9.6 billion) are bound for canada and mexico. According to the Business roundtable, an estimated 250,000 Wisconsin jobs depend upon trade with canada and mexico. if the United States withdrawals from nAFtA, the Wisconsin dairy industry would be particularly hard hit as mexico is the top importer of Wisconsin dairy products. the european Union would be quick to fill the void left by the Wisconsin dairy industry as a new eU-mexico trade pact will soon guarantee european cheese makers duty-free access to mexico.

A withdrawal from nAFtA would have a negative effect on one of the largest employment sectors in Hudson, transportation and warehousing. interstates 35, 94, and 29 are viewed as the corridors most vital to free trade in north America. Hudson has emerged as a significant distribution hub due in no small part to its proximity to two of these interstates. the absence of free trade along those interstates would deny Hudson the strategic advantage our geographic location currently provides.

i serve as chair-elect of the mid-America chamber executives (mAce), an organization representing chamber professionals in six states in the upper-midwest. mAce will soon issue our own open letter supporting the continuation of nAFtA. i encourage you, our partners in the business sector to let your voices be heard on nAFtA before we walk away from an agreement that opens many doors for our state and local economies.

We enjoy a variety of healthcare services in St. croix county and Leadership Hudson students were given an education about the many aspects of providing effective healthcare to our community.

Leadership Hudson students started the day at the Hudson campus of christian community Homes & Services with a breakfast discussion highlighting senior living with Administrator, Dan Goodier. Dan led students on a tour of ccH covering life’s later stages with everything from senior apartments, assisted living and memory care wings, as well as transitional/short-term rehab care.

our aging population is in for a longer productive lifestyle and can expect senior-centric fitness centers such as the red oak center for improving the quality of life by encouraging preventative exercise and clinical therapies. You don’t have to be a resident to enjoy the benefits of the red oak Fitness center as it offers a community membership. mary Steele the manager of the Free clinic of Pierce & St. croix counties addressed community challenges and enlightened student leaders of the generosity of area healthcare professionals who volunteer and

partner to address the needs of those in the community who are unable to receive healthcare through mainstream methods. Leadership Hudson students traveled to Hudson Hospital & clinic for lunch and a presentation by President tom Borowski. tom shared a few facts about the 65 year old hospital that has enjoyed a “new” campus (already 15 years old)! now part of the HealthPartners family, Hudson Hospital and clinic offers an emergency center open 24/7 and the area’s premier Birth center. taking a jump into the healthcare of the 21st century, Dr. Paul mcGinnis of Hudson Physicians, shared a local view of what to expect in healthcare advancements. His forward thinking presentation was followed by a tour of the innovative hallways of the Hudson campus. Students learned more about the campus as they walked the hallway “gallery” featuring inspiring artwork by rotating artists. this “Healing Arts” initiative creates a healing environment for mind, body and spirit to be enjoyed by both guests and employees! A lively panel discussion with representatives of various community health organizations followed. Deb Lindemann, Public Health coordinator for St. croix county Public Health, Heather Logelin, Foundation and community engagement Director for river Falls Area Hospital, Derek Gilde, President of nAmi St. croix Valley and Peter Vandusartz, Director of Programs for change at Hudson Hospital & clinic shared their observations and concerns about challenges that the St. croix county public currently face and what their organizations are doing to address these community health needs.

Additional area health and wellness organizations were also explored. offering so much more than the expected fitness center,

Dr. Jamie cortese of Healthmax chiropractic and Dr. Barb Wasson of riverpoint Family Acupuncture, LLc also introduced services that address health care challenges (beyond the obvious of their specialties) including arthritis, migraine, stroke rehab, weight loss, anxiety.

Here in Hudson, our healthcare offerings are extensive and varied! “So much more than you ever would have thought” a

Leadership Hudson student commented, “We are lucky to have this level of care and so many options right here in St. croix Valley!”Leadership Hudson, a nine month leadership development program, is offered bi-annually through the Hudson Area chamber of commerce & tourism Bureau with thanks for the support of sponsor, Xcel energy. Leadership Hudson Alumni took a field trip to Plantables. in an effort to forward the pollination project. Building a bomb is not something one would typically brag about however, in this case, these bombs attract bees! Alumni volunteered to create plantable bombs, using a technique that is hundreds of years old, by rolling seeds in a clay made of compost and organic matter that protects the seeds from insects and birds while feeding them nutrients once they germinate.

the chamber proudly recognizes Leadership Hudson Alumni as they continue to volunteer and give back to the community. the chamber also recognizes the families of these leaders who give of their family time to contribute to the greater good. Leadership Hudson Alumni are not only contributing to the planting of seeds to attract bees, they are planting the seeds for future leaders, growing givers that gain!
