It has indeed been a joy to serve St. John’s during your transition between settled Rectors. You all have worked very hard and faithfully in the process to get to know yourselves and your ministries more. I would like to thank each and every one of you for the opportunity and privi-lege to be your Interim Rector. Your future is bright and this year truly is a year of new beginnings. Welcome CommitteeFrom June Elliott

2018 will be an exciting year for St, John’s Episcopal Church. On March 5th our new priest, Fr. Benjamin Padgett, will begin as our rector. He and his wife, Kendall, and three young boys will be moving from Memphis, Tennessee.

As a church we need to welcome them to our church and to Waynesboro. All members are invited to become active in our welcome (transi-tion) activities. Our welcoming committee will be headed up by vestry member June Elliott. Listed below are ideas of some things we can do as a church to welcome Fr. Benjamin and his family.

We anticipate having a number of subcom-mittees who will be responsible for each activity. Selecting these activities and then volunteering to help with one or more is where the opportunities for congregation participation are available.

First, let's think about moving to a new city that is totally foreign to us and how can we make this transition easier. Babysitting assistance in the beginning for the three boys (ages 6, 4, and 20

months) might be appreciated. Gift certificates to local restaurants or any other local retailers are another option. A directory of local professionals we know and can recommend such as doctors, dentists, plumbers, contractors, etc.

We can invite our new rector and his family to dinner with small groups of 6 to 8. Wear your name tag and don’t hesitate to introduce and re-introduce yourself to Fr. Benjamin. Don’t be in-sulted if he doesn't remember your name the first time. He has a lot of new people to get to know.

Send cards of welcome to our new rector and his family. Remember, we are going into a partnership. Fr. Benjamin is not coming to save us, but is coming to work together with all of us. We will have change and we must look at change in a positive way. This is our church. We will keep you abreast as the committees are formed. If you have any ideas or know where you would like to partici-pate in the welcoming committee please contact June Elliott on 540-255-6857 or [email protected].

Disciples Kitchen

St. John’s will be hosting the Disciples Kitchen on February 8. A sign-up sheet is on the Mission board in the hall. We are taking donations for the potatoes, which June Elliott will be purchasing. You can drop off the money in the church office, and check out what is still needed.

Coffee Hosts for 2018From Donna Balser

In the past I have scheduled a different family each week to host coffee hour after each of the services. This year, we are going to try something different. We have a sign-up sheet for volunteers. The sheet is posted beside the office door, or you can call or email me and I will be happy to put your name on a date that will works best for you.

This is a very worthwhile cause and we would love for everyone to be involved. It is such a great way to come together to meet people, have a little fel-lowship, and help out your church.

You don’t have to go to a huge expense. The cof-fee, lemonade and supplies are provided by the church. All you need to do is make coffee and lemonade and bring in a snack for after the two Sunday services. You may even partner with some-one if you don’t want to do both services.

If you’re new to St. John’s, or if you’ve never hosted before, this is an easy way to become involved in the life of the parish and to meet some new people.

Over 40 years ago, members of St. John’s Episcopal Church estab-lished a fund with the purpose of providing some financial relief for the poor, distressed or underprivileged, as well as assisting individuals and groups for religious, charitable or educational needs. This fund is named Agape, which means Christian love. The principal has grown over the years and a portion of the interest is available each year to support the fund's outreach.

The St. John’s Agape Fund typically helps over a dozen families throughout the year with rent, utilities, insurance, car expenses and mortgages. The fund has helped families save their homes, move into homes, keep the lights on, stay warm, and have transportation. Many of these families are the working poor, with little or no cushion when someone loses a job, gets sick or experi-ences an unfortunate setback.

Every February, we celebrate this program and ask our members to prayerfully consider a donation to the fund’s prin-cipal. If you are so moved, please put your check in the offertory plate on Agape Sunday, February 11, writing “Agape” in the memo section of your check. If you will not be in church that day, please drop your check in the offertory plate another Sunday or mail it to the church at P. O. Box 945, Waynesboro, VA 22980.

The current Agape trustees are: Tom Maneval, Bettie von Frankenberg, Martha Steidle, Susan Jenny, and Bill Eckman. The community served by the Agape Fund is the greater Waynesboro area, defined as Augusta County and the Virginia counties im-mediately contiguous to Augusta County, including all towns and cities contained within those counties. If you are aware of some-one or a group in need of assistance, please put your request in writing and send it to the church office or one of the trustees. All requests are kept confidential.
