February 2018 What a difference a year makes. This me last January I was preparing to pack up all my office books, load them up in a U-Haul trailer and then drive up to Morristown, TN, to begin my new call as the rector of All Saints’ Church. If I am completely honest there were moments when I was asking myself, “Lord, what have I goen into?” Then again, I am sure there were people on the Search Commiee who must have been won- dering, “Lord, did we do the right thing? I’ve never seen a priest in cowboy boots.” This would be what the Danish theologian, Soren Kierkegaard might say it is all about having the courage to make the “Leap of Faith.” This past year, Fr. Mark Holland and All Saints’ Episcopal Church have taken a big leap of faith together. I’m so grateful to Harold and Ann Nichols for sharing their house on Lake Cherokee with me for several months while I looked to buy a new home for the Hollands. I’m so grateful that Virginia Carey called me up about the home that she and Max built to see if we might be interested in buying it. I agreed to purchasing 1502 Central Church Road without Liz having a opportunity to see it first. I’m so glad that she loved it. I really didn’t have a Plan B. The first week on the job was all about figuring out how things were done in my new parish/diocese. I had my first Diocesan Convenon in mid-February. I needed Lynne Ann Anderson with her more than 29 years of expe- rience to let me know “where all the bodies were buried.” I needed to reassure Dr. Ryan Garber that we would get along just fine and that I wouldn’t do anything too crazy with the music. As it turns out, both Lynne Ann and Ryan have been real blessings to my priesthood here at All Saints’. Before I could catch my breath, Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday were upon us. Blink twice more and we were facing Holy Week and Easter. A Celebraon of New Ministry took place on my 59th birthday. Slowly I was finding my bearings in East Tennessee. Once Liz joined me here in Morristown at the end of the school year we began our weekly exploraon of some of East Tennessee and all the wonders of God’s creaon. For us, swamps and bayous were giving way to mountains and waterfalls. For the first me in years we experi- enced four real seasons. I survived both the Spring and Fall BBQ events. I have taken my tours of duty down in the “Pit”. Dan Dick- ens is cerfiably nuts. I haven’t a clue how he organizes such a huge event twice a year. I’ve never seen a parish- wide event that touches so many people and at the same me everyone has so much fun doing it. [connued on page 2]

February 2018

What a difference a year makes. This time last January I was preparing to pack up all

my office books, load them up in a U-Haul trailer and then drive up to Morristown, TN, to begin my new call as the

rector of All Saints’ Church. If I am completely honest there were moments when I was asking myself, “Lord, what

have I gotten into?” Then again, I am sure there were people on the Search Committee who must have been won-

dering, “Lord, did we do the right thing? I’ve never seen a priest in cowboy boots.” This would be what the Danish

theologian, Soren Kierkegaard might say it is all about having the courage to make the “Leap of Faith.”

This past year, Fr. Mark Holland and All Saints’ Episcopal Church have taken a big leap of faith together.

I’m so grateful to Harold and Ann Nichols for sharing their house on Lake Cherokee with me for several

months while I looked to buy a new home for the Hollands. I’m so grateful that Virginia Carey called me up about

the home that she and Max built to see if we might be interested in buying it. I agreed to purchasing 1502 Central

Church Road without Liz having a opportunity to see it first. I’m so glad that she loved it. I really didn’t have a

Plan B.

The first week on the job was all about figuring out how things were done in my new parish/diocese. I had

my first Diocesan Convention in mid-February. I needed Lynne Ann Anderson with her more than 29 years of expe-

rience to let me know “where all the bodies were buried.” I needed to reassure Dr. Ryan Garber that we would get

along just fine and that I wouldn’t do anything too crazy with the music. As it turns out, both Lynne Ann and Ryan

have been real blessings to my priesthood here at All Saints’.

Before I could catch my breath, Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday were upon us. Blink twice more and we

were facing Holy Week and Easter. A Celebration of New Ministry took place on my 59th birthday.

Slowly I was finding my bearings in East Tennessee. Once Liz joined me here in Morristown at the end of

the school year we began our weekly exploration of some of East Tennessee and all the wonders of God’s creation.

For us, swamps and bayous were giving way to mountains and waterfalls. For the first time in years we experi-

enced four real seasons.

I survived both the Spring and Fall BBQ events. I have taken my tours of duty down in the “Pit”. Dan Dick-

ens is certifiably nuts. I haven’t a clue how he organizes such a huge event twice a year. I’ve never seen a parish-

wide event that touches so many people and at the same time everyone has so much fun doing it.

The leadership of the wardens (Judy Potter-Yates and Bill Mitrik) and the vestry this past year has been phe-

nomenal. We worked closely together facing whatever challenges were before us confident that God would provide as

long as we were willing to listen to the Holy Spirit and dedicate ourselves to the true mission of the gospel.

It didn’t take long before I could feel a real sense of excitement returning to All Saints’. A true understanding of

our mission and common purpose has taken root once again in our parish life. Evidence of this showed in the increased

Sunday attendance. We ended 2016 with an average Sunday morning attendance of 97. By the end of 2017 that aver-

age had increased to 159. The same was true for giving in support of All Saints. We started with a budgeted deficit of

nearly $50K. Through increased offerings we cut that deficit in half by the end of the year.

The same is true of our parish school. Sam Neill accepted my request to become the President of the Board and

he has been amazing. All Saints’ Episcopal School has reconnected with the parish church in such a way that it has

brought us closer together in mutual support of one another. The Monday and Friday morning chapel services at the

school are bringing a message of Christian love and grace to many families that are unchurched. The return of the Rev.

Gigi Sharp to ASES as our new Head of School is a true gift for us all.

While some might believe much of this is due to the new rector, I can assure you it is so much more than that.

While you were looking for me, I was also looking for you. I wanted to move to a parish that was strong enough to be

mission driven. I wanted to be called to a parish that wasn’t afraid to let go of things that had grown old and no longer

were meaningful. I also wanted to move to a parish church that was willing to be brave enough to really open their

doors and welcome all of God’s people. It turns out that All Saints’ was exactly what I was hoping for in this next phase

of my priesthood.

I love that we open our doors to the healing ministries of 12 Step groups. I love that we host a monthly Bingo

where we really serve our guests with hospitality and love. I’m proud that we raised the funds over and above our

budget to paint the church Narthex and Sanctuary. I’m tickled that my “quirky parish” hugs and kisses everything in a

three block radius during the Passing of the Peace. I’m grateful that we are mission driven to serve our Lord Jesus Christ

and resist the temptation of letting financial resources alone define who we are as the people of God.

The people of All Saints’ are faithful people of God. You are willing to take risks and chances in the name of the

gospel. You are brave enough to welcome those that others have turned away. Certainly there are times when we

might disagree with one another but still we find room for each one of us.

You are the beloved sheep of my flock here in Morristown, TN. I will never turn any of you away. I’m not ex-

actly sure when it happened but I have fallen in love with All Saints’ Church. I look forward to being your rector for

many years to come.

God’s Peace & My Love,

The Rev. J. Mark Holland

Rector, All Saints’ Episcopal Church

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL:

Exciting things are happening at All Saints’ Episcopal School! On January 21st, we

held a Showcase of our school. It was well-attended by present and prospective families and gave our stu-dents and teachers a chance to show off all the wonderful things they do! On January 22nd, the ECW and helpers served their monthly hot dog meal to our students and staff, something to which we all look for-ward every month! Thank you for your generosity! On January 23rd and 30th, we held a “67 Club” phone blitz to raise money for the school.

On January 23rd and 25th, we held a “Kindergarten Roundup” for the PK classes. Kindergarten Roundup for the public will be held on February 21st. Re-enrollment for all returning ASES students begins on Feb-ruary 5th. Open enrollment begins March 6th. Generous scholarships and financial aid are available. Contact Annemarie Spain at 423-586-3280 for details and to schedule a tour.

Our January service project was to collect blankets and pet food and to deliver them to the Animal Shelter. In February, the children will be making Valentines for the residents of a local elder living facility. The Singing Saints will also be performing for the residents.

Please remember to send in your Campbell Soup labels and Boxtops for Education. There are two plastic boxes in the parish hall for this purpose.

Peace in Christ,

Gigi+

The Outreach Committee finally met on January 18 at All Saints’ Church after sorting out available dates and the

snow. Usually we meet at a member’s home or our quarterly meeting and dinner. See another reason to join the

Outreach Committee we meet only four times a year and you get a meal too.

Parishioners responded when asked for the names of non-profit organizations that could benefit from the 2nd Sun-

day loose offering. At the Outreach meeting the following organizations were selected for the months of February

thru April.

February – Noah’s Arc - There will be a guest speaker from Noah’s Arc on Feb. 7 for the Agape dinner. The loose

offering for them will be the following Sunday February 11th. Noah’s Arc is a no kill animal shelter. In addition we

are asking parishioners to bring in bedding (your old towels, blankets or sheets) to donate too. They will accept

dog and cat food however it must be Purina Dog chow for dogs and Frisky canned cat food pate. Noah’s Arc is fund-

ed solely by donations and fundraisers with 100% of the monies raised going directly to improving the health and

lives of the rescued animals. You can become a member and be a foster parent of an animal or even help with the

day to day operation. Learn more by visiting their Facebook page or join us on February 7th…. or do both.

March – Serenity House will receive the loose offering that month.

April - the Mooresburg Community Association “Meals in the Hills”.

There will be more about those organizations in the months to follow.

The filling of the bags for Food on Foot bag will be February 7 and February 21. This of course is during the Agape

Dinner on Wednesdays. Distribution of the bags will be Saturday February 24 at 11am at Food on Foot, 1 Berkline

Drive, Morristown. The fourth Saturday of every month is the day All Saints’ parishioners assist with handing out

the bags of food. This is at most 2 hours out of your day and would be well spent.

Bingo continues to grow. Five new faces came for Bingo in January. Bingo will not be on the second Wednesday in

February as that is Ash Wednesday. The date will be February 21.

In the recent past, the garden beds out by the BBQ pit have been used by Hidden Treasures Academy as part of

their educational program. However the staff member with Hidden Treasures that supervised the students is no

longer with them. So the youth of All Saints’ will be using the garden beds to grow various vegetables. Outreach

will provide fertilizer and plants for the youth.

The response for Helping Hands Clinic was good. The presentation by Helping Hands Clinic during Agape dinner on

January 10 revealed additional needs besides financial considerations. In the conversation following the presenta-

tion parishioners learned that one can help by providing items on Helping Hands Clinic “Supply Wish List”. The list

is varied and includes things as simple as Band Aides to office paper to heating pads. The list is posted in the parish

hall and is online as it has been forwarded to Carolyn Dean to post on the All Saints’ website. A container will be

set up in the parish hall for “Supply Wish List” items.

The Adult Christian Education Committee is

looking forward to a very exciting year of living into the mission of the church (“ . . . love, worship, proclaim, learn, and minister”). Building on the success of the past year, we are anticipating even more intergenerational events and increased shared activities with Evangelism, Parish Life, and the Children and Youth boards.

Deacon Sarai noted in a recent sermon that God’s calling to us (“vocation”) is not a one-time thing. It is an ongoing summons to live into our divine relationship with God and each other. Adult Christian Education is at the very least a beginning where we can hear God’s voice calling us to respond with our gifts! Are you seeking to hear? Are you an organizer? A planner? A “good soldier” or a chief? A cook? A teacher? A disciple? All Saints’ Episcopal Church is the ideal place for each of us to find just that right place where we are at once blessed and are a blessing to others!

One final note: Let me put in a “plug” for our presence on Facebook. There’s lots of information that is shared that way!

https://www.facebook.com/groups/ASECYouth/ Oh, and don’t be put off by the “ASECYouth” part of the URL. It’s for the whole parish. Respectfully submitted, Henry G. Selby Vestry Liaison for Adult Education

ECW enjoyed a fun filled ‘12th Night’ Christmas Party at the home of Sheri and Mike Chiappetta. There

were about 40 in attendance. Hats off to Sheri & Mike for hosting this fantastic bunch of friends!

Our monthly MHA Bingo lunches have been going very well. Every month we have 35 – 50 guests. Some of our

guests have been coming since the very first Bingo. We encourage them to bring new friends each month. Our

Christmas lunch was a huge success. We served 50 guests a wonderful holiday meal and each guest got a $10

gift card. Thanks to all who helped to make this event such a bug success

As we begin 2018, ECW will be doing fund raising to send three children to Camp again this year. We will

continue to do Bingo each month. And during the school year we will serve lunch to the children at ASES once

a month.

Please join in the fun.

The Evangelism Committee met Monday January 8th at 5:30 PM at the home of Judy Carter. Judy was very gra-cious to host the meeting and serve soup and salad for supper. Persons attending were Cindy Selby, Henry Selby, John Hutchins, L A Orio, Sarai Wender, Bob Harmon and Judy Carter. Carolyn Dean submitted the December website analysis which showed 319 new users and a total of 432 sessions visited. Discussion of where we were with our Welcome Bags and we decided to eliminate the thumb drives and have decided to as a shopping bag with the All Saints’ printing on it including the website address. We felt that we would get more interest from these than the thumb drives. A deadline for getting the bags and magnets was set for March 1. We discussed the need to improve the signage throughout the church to be more positive and less negative with the messages we wish to convey. Bob will discuss at the next Vestry meeting. Bob brought up for discussion the status of the Men’s Group at All Saints’ and what we could do to get movement with it. Sarai was already scheduled to meet with the Brotherhood at The Church of the Ascension Thursday morning and agreed to ask if one or two of their men would be aggregable to speaking at on of our Agape Wednesday night programs. Sarai will pass on Henry Selby and Bob Harmon’s contact information for following discussions. Bob agreed to work with the Parish Life Committee and Wayne Stambaugh in getting this going. The next meeting is scheduled for February 5, 2018 at 6:00 PM at the Church. Bob Harmon, Liaison for Evangelism
