MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTWelcometo2018.

WhiletheentireDurhamCollege(DC)communityislookingforwardtotheyearahead,wealsofondlyreflectonDC’s50thanniversarycelebrationsasahighlightof2017.Throughouttheyear,wehadtheopportunitytorecognizetheaccomplishmentsofmanyofourstudents,employees and alumni that represent the college acrosstheglobe.Asouranniversaryfestivitiesended,thecollegeisleftwithmuchoptimismforthefuture.

Bolsteredbythesuccessofourstudentsandalumni,thatoptimismservesasaguidingforcefortheyearstocome.Inthinkingahead,DCiskeenlyinterestedinandawareoftheaccelerationof technological and societal change and how we respond to the challenges those advancements canbring.

Withthefutureinmind,weareengagedinleading-edgeresearch,investinginnewtechnology and expanding our programs and facilities.InthisissueoftheAlumniMagazine,youwillfindanupdateabouttheongoingconstructionattheW.GalenWestonCentreforFood(CFF),whichincludesanoutdoorclassroomandtheinstallationofourbrewlabandline.

Youwillreadaboutourcutting-edgeresearch,with the launch of the Durham College Hub for AppliedResearchinArtificialIntelligenceforBusinessSystems.

Weknowourapproachworks.Wehaveseenitoverthecourseofthepastfivedecadesasouralumni have graduated and become community builders and leaders who have responded to alltypesofchangesandopportunitiesintheirpersonalandprofessionallives.

This issue of the magazine also includes examples of those community builders; graduates like PatandDaveFletcher,whoseloveconnectionwas fostered at DC and turned into a lifelong relationshipwiththecollege,andBrandonGvazdaitis,whoseworkasawelderbrought himbacktoDCtoworkontheconstruction attheCFF.

We have been very fortunate over this past year to connect with many alumni to hear their stories and I encourage all our graduates to reach out and stayintouch.Thecollegeisextremelyproudofouralumniandwantstoknowhowyouaredoing.

PreviousAlumniofDistinctionwinnersincludeBrentLessard,whoalsowona2017OntarioPremier’sAward,aswasprofiledinourlasteditionofthemagazine.TheentireDCcommunityisextremelyproudofhisachievement.

Despitethefactitisstillearlyin2018,therehasalreadybeenmanyexcitingthingshappeninginthealumnicommunity.AtthebeginningofJanuary,wewelcomedDCalumnusPhilPritchardbacktocampus.AstheKeeperoftheCup,healsobroughtanotherfamouslordwithhim–LordStanleythatis,intheformoftheStanleyCup.

WeenjoyedanothersuccessfulAlumniNightattheOshawaGeneralsinmid-January.Morethan130 alumni and employees came out for a night of reconnectingwiththecollegeandeachother,nottomentionsomegreathockey.

There is a lot more planned for the coming months so be sure to check the upcoming events sectionofthemagazinefordetails.

Asweheadintothecomingyear,pleaseknowtheentireAlumniAssociationisworkinghardtoensure2018isgoingtobesuccessful,asweengage with our graduates at home and around theworld.

DC REACHES 50 ACTS OF KINDNESS TO WRAP UP MILESTONE YEARRidingawaveofholidayspiritacrosscampus,Durham College (DC) reached its goal of 50 Acts ofKindnesscompletedandsharedbytheendofits50thanniversaryyear.LaunchedinAprilaspartofDC’s50thanniversarycelebrations,the 50 ActsofKindnessproject was designed to capture a snapshot of how members of the campus communitygiveback.

Whethertheywerevolunteering,donatingtoafoodorclothingdrive,helpinganeighbourorsurprisingsomeoneinneedofasmile,DCstudents,employees,alumniandretireesprovedthatthey’rebothgo-gettersandgo-givers!

EachactofkindnesswassubmittedtotheDC50 websitealongwithabriefdescriptionoftheactofkindness,participantsinvolvedandaphoto.Aseachactofkindnesswasreceivedit was then posted to the 50ActsofKindnesswebpage building a virtual collage of goodwill andcommunity.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: ALUMNI OF DISTINCTION DurhamCollege(DC)isnowacceptingnominationsforitsAlumniofDistinctionaward,whichrecognizesgraduateswhomakeextraordinarycontributionstosocietywhilealsoachievingcareersuccess.

Recipientsareselectedbasedonprofessional,communityandpersonalaccomplishments,contributionstotheadvancementofDC,andthegeographic(regional,national,andinternational)scopeofimpactfortheirachievements.

“We are incredibly lucky to have more than 82,000alumnirepresentingthecollegeacrosstheglobe,”saidDonLovisa,president,DurhamCollege.“Thisawardisouropportunitytoacknowledge the incredible work they are doing professionally and personally while also highlightingtheirachievements.”

Since1990,101alumnihavereceivedtheAlumniofDistinctionhonour.TheseincludeBrentLessardandDebbieLow,whoarealsoPremier’sAwardwinners,aswellasPhilipPritchard,whowasaPremier’sAwardnominee.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: NURSE CHEVROLET CADILLACJust as Durham College (DC) has been a part of DurhamRegionforthepastfivedecades,NurseChevrolet Cadillac has also been a stalwart of the communitysinceitsfoundingin1966.EstablishedbyW.S(Bill)Nurse,thedealershipnotonlysellsandservicescars,itisengagedinacultureofphilanthropythathassupportedmultiplecharitiesandorganizationsthroughouttheyears.

AtitshelmisBill’sdaughterMaryNurse,whojoinedtheorganizationin1997andwassubsequentlyapprovedasthedealerprincipalforNurseChevroletCadillacLtd.Underherdirectionthedealership’sphysicalfootprint,operationsandcharitablegivinghavegrownsignificantly.

Asthosechangeshavetakenplace,sotoohasthedevelopmentatDC.TheNursesmovedtoDurhamRegionshortlyaftertheSimcoeBuilding–theonlybuildingoncampus–hadfirstopened.Mary,whowasahighschoolguidancecounsellorpriortotakingoveratthedealership,also remembers bringing students to the college’s Oshawacampusfortours.

Fromthoseearlydaysonward,shehaswatchedasthecollegehasgrown.Throughformingitspartnership and adding to its shared campus with theUniversityofOntarioInstituteofTechnology,toexpandingitsWhitbycampus,DChascontinuedtodevelopitsfacilitiesandprogramstomeettheneedsofitsstudents.

This incredible growth and development could not have happened without help from private and corporate donors like Nurse Chevrolet Cadillac,whoselatestgiftishelpingtocompleteconstructionofthecollege’snewCentreforCollaborativeEducation(CFCE).

MaryrecentlyjoinedDCPresidentDonLovisa,studentAnnabelleWilsonandSeniorDevelopmentOfficerJenniferClarkforatouroftheCFCE.Scheduledtoopeninfall2018,shewasabletoseethespace,includingtheclassroomthatwill bear the dealership’s name in honour of their contribution,aswellashearabouttheservices,supportsandspacesthatwillcalltheCFCEhome.

“Beingabletotourtheprojectwasawonderfulwaytobringtheimpactofourdonationtolife,”Marysaid.“Theplansthecollegehasforthespace are truly amazing and right on target with the needs of the employment market here in DurhamRegion.Thefacilitiesandtrainingthatwill be available are truly relevant to the world ofworkaftergraduationandwillcertainlyhelpstudentspreparefortheircareers.”

When asked about why Nurse Chevrolet Cadillac chosetofinanciallysupporttheCFCEshenoted,“as a dealership we have a number of pillars that weusetoevaluatepotentialdonations.Educationis one of them and we feel it’s the role of the community to support teaching and learning for thenextgeneration.WehadalsomadeadonationtowardstheconstructionoftheW.GalenWestonCentreforFoodatthecollege’sWhitbycampus.Donatingtothiscapitalprojectseemedlikethelogicalnextstep,onewhichwouldbenefitboththecommunityatlargeandDCstudents.”

Alegacyprojecttiedtothecollege’s50thanniversaryin2017,theCFCEwillreplacethecollege’sagingSimcoebuilding,whichwas originally built as a temporary structure andopenedin1969.Thenewmulti-level,75,000-square-foot-facilitywillserveasaneducationalaccesspointforstudentswhilebringingtogetherlocal,Indigenousandglobalcommunity groups and members of key business sectors.

DURHAM COLLEGE COLLABORATES WITH PARKWOOD ESTATE TO RECREATE ICONIC GEORGE TANAKA GARDENSIncelebrationoftheongoingpartnershipbetweenDurhamCollege(DC)andParkwoodNationalHistoricSite(Parkwood),studentsfromthecollege’sHorticultureTechnicianprogramhaverecreatedParkwood’siconicJapanesegarden.Designed by Canadian landscape architect George Tanakain1963,therecreationmadeitsdebutattheLandscapeOntarioCongresstradeshow,whichtookplaceinTorontofromJanuary9to11.

“EveryyearCongressoffersspaceforstudentsinhorticultureprogramstobuildagarden,”saidShaneJones,professor,SchoolofScience&EngineeringTechnology.“DChaspresentedgarden concepts before but given the college’s relationshipwithParkwood,workingtogethertodevelopanddelivereducationalcurricula,andthefactParkwoodiscelebratingits100thanniversary,itwasdecidedwewouldrecreatetheTanakadesign.”

CommissionedbySamMcLaughlin,toconverttheestate’sexistinggreenhouses,Tanakawaswell known for combining his Japanese heritage withelementsnativetotheCanadianlandscape.Designedtobe“simpleandunassertive”,hisJapanesegardenisastapleatthehistoricalsite,occupyingoneoffivegreenhousespaces.

McLaughlin was in his 90’s when the Japanese Garden greenhouse was designed and it became a contemplativeretreatforhim,merestepsfromhisdomesticspaces.Hewasoftenfoundwanderingandenjoyingthespace.

Usingoriginalelementsretrievedfromthegarden,which will be restored back to its original exterior thisspring,andworkingintandemwiththeheritagedocentsatParkwood,thestudentsputtogethertheirinterpretationofTanaka’svision.

“ParkwoodEstatehasthoroughlyenjoyedworking with the Durham College students on thisrecreationofTanaka’sgarden,”saidSamanthaGeorge,CuratorofParkwood.“Notonlywasthe greenhouse space very special to Sam McLaughlin,ithasbecomeafixtureattheestate.Thestudents’recreationreallydiditjusticeandgaveothersthechancetoenjoythegardenasmuchasMcLaughlindid.”

Followingatwo-dayinstallationatCongress,morethan13,000visitorstothetradeshowwereabletotakeinthestudentshardwork,whileenjoyingapieceoflocalOshawahistory.

Heldeachyear,AlumniNightattheOshawaGeneralsisachanceforDCgraduatesandemployeestocometogetherforaneveningofreconnectingandgreathockey,whilealsoenjoyingareception,snacksandnon-alcoholicbeveragesaspartoftheirticketpurchase.

AlsoonhandwasDCPresidentDonLovisa,DCAlumniAssociationPresidentElaineGarnettandStudentGovernorRahulKhanna,whorepresentedthecollegeduringtheceremonialpuckdrop. Ofcourse,noeveningwouldbecompletewithoutanappearancebyDCmascotLordDurham, whowasgivingawayt-shirtsandhatstothecrowd.

LOVE AT DCDAVE AND PAT FLETCHERForPatandDaveFletcher,whatstartedasalove story featuring two college sweethearts hasturnedintoalifelongconnectionwithDurhamCollege(DC),whichisparticularlyfittinggiven Dave’s own familial roots within the DC community.

Itallbeganwhentheymetin1981.Patwasinthesecond year of the Registered Nursing program andDavehadjustenrolledinthecollege’sMechanicalEngineeringTechnologyprogram.Introducedbyamutualfriend,heeventuallyaskedheroutonlytobechallengedtoasquashgameinresponse.Theirfirstdatetookplaceonthecourtatthecollege’sathleticcomplexwherePatinsistssheletDavewin.

Hemusthavewonherheartaswellbecauseaftergraduationthecouplemarriedandbegantheircareersshortlythereafter;PatasanurseattheOshawa General Hospital and Dave as a design engineeratNorapcoLtd.

However,asmanyalumniknow,justbecauseyouhavegraduateddoesnotmeanyourconnectionwithDCendsandin1986Daveheardthecollegewashiring.Hisapplicationwassuccessfulandhebecame a professor in what is now the School of Business,ITandManagement,whichsignaledthestartofhis30-yearcareerwiththeinstitution.

DCwasnotjustspecialtoDaveandPat.Dave’sparentshadahistorywiththepost-secondaryinstitutionaswell.In1969,hisfatherwashiredasDirectorofPlantandPlanningtodesign,buildandmaintaintheGordonWilleybuilding.Thiswas followed by numerous other wings; including theathleticcomplex.Dave’smotherbecametheDirectorofNursingatDurhamCollegein1975,makingKeithandVirginiathefirstmarriedcoupleemployedatDC.

The Fletchers have been ardent supporters of thecollegeanditsstudents.ThisincludestheirdaughterJennifer,whoiscurrentlyenrolledintheEarlyChildhoodEducationprogram.Infact,withinDave’simmediatefamilytheyhaveover60yearsof combined experience with DC as both students andemployees.

ThroughouthisDCcareer,Davehadmanymemorable highlights as President of the Durham CollegeStudentAssociation(DCSA),AlumnusofDistinctionAwardwinner,PresidentoftheDCAlumniAssociationandGuestSpeakerattheyear2000Convocation.Inadditiontohisloveofteaching,heenjoyedvolunteeringnumerousyearsas the Advisor and Parliamentarian for the DCSA andcoordinatingtheOperationsManagementSocietystudentswithoutsideagencies.

Pathasenjoyedseeinghowthecampushasgrown and become more integrated since her daysstudyingintheSimcoeBuildingandat thehospital.

From the family members that came before them toaseeminglyinnocuousfirstdateonthesquashcourts,PatandDavenotonlyfellinloveatDC,they formed a deep bond with the college that helpedlaunchtheircareersandlivestogether.Throughtheirfamily’sexpertiseanddonationsoftime,bursariesandcapitalcontributions,theyplayed an important role in shaping DC into the top-qualitypost-secondaryinstitutionitistoday.

LOVE AT DCJANET AND CURTIS MOLLONIt was two fedoras and being in the right place attherighttimethatbroughtCurtisandJanetMollontogether.Theirswasaloveconnectionyears in the making and at the heart of it was DurhamCollege(DC).

Despitehavingrunintoeachotherbefore,itwasn’tuntilDC’sSpringConvocationin2009 when the pair really took note of each other.Curtis’sgraduationfromtheEmergencyManagement program was scheduled for that morningandJanet,whohadcompletedtheHumanServicesCounsellingprogram,wascrossingthestageintheafternoon.Hersisterhowever,wasalsograduatinginthemorningsoshewasonhandtocheerheron.

Janet’soutfitofchoicefortheoccasion?Apinstripepantsuitandfedora.Coincidentally,Curtisandhisbestfriendhadalsochosenfedorastodressuptheirconvocationgowns.AsJanetwatchedtheceremonyfromthestands,shespottedtheirfedorasanddecidedshehadtofindanopportunitytospeakwiththemensportingthestylishhats.

Aftertheceremonyconcluded,Curtiswasoutsidetaking pictures with family and friends when Janet beganherapproachtosayhello.Unfortunately,

herattemptwascutshortbytherealizationCurtishadagirlfriend,whowasalsoposingforpictures,soinsteadeyecontact,asharedsmileandatipoftheir hats was all they could do to acknowledge eachother.

FastforwardtolifeaftergraduationandbothJanetandCurtiswerebusytryingtofindtheirfootingintheirworkandpersonallives.Itquicklybecame apparent they shared a mutual circle offriends,whichledtoreconnectingatapartymonthsaftertheirfedora-drivenconvocationmoment.

Curtis,whowasnowlivingclosetoDC,beganworkinginthesecurityfieldandJanetfoundajobatthecollege’sOfficeofCampusSafety.ShealsoenrolledinDC’sChildandYouthWorkerprogram,which signaled the start of a balancing act betweengoingtoclassandworkingeight-to-12hourshifts.

ThismeantJanetoftenworkedallnightandthenheadedstraighttoclassinthemorning.Tosavetime,shebeganstayingwithCurtis,whichwasamucheasiercommute.Bothsinglebythistime,JanetstrivedtofindthebalancebetweenschoolandworkandCurtisbecamehernumberonesupport:“nomatterhowtiredorreadytogiveup

shewas,Ikeptremindingherthiswastheroadtosuccess.”

As the days turned into weeks and the weeks intomonths,theynaturallyfoundtheirrhythmasacoupleandwhiletherewasneveranofficialboyfriend/girlfrienddiscussion,theirfriendshipevolvedintowhatisnowaloving10-yearrelationship.

TheirweddingtookplaceinOctober2013.DaughterKaylinearrived10monthslaterandtheirsecondchildisdueinSeptember2018.Curtisisnowworkingasamaterialhandlerat

Lakeridge Health and Janet is an access facilitator fortheDurhamChildren’sAidSociety.

Despitethetwistsandturnsalongtheway,theMollonstrulydidfindloveatDC.Curtissumsitupbestwhenhesays,“IstillthankDurhamCollegefortheroller-coasterridethatgavemethe reason I get up in the morning and the reason IdowhatIdo.Ican’timaginemylifewithoutmygirls and I have the college to thank for being involved in a variety of ways to help to make my familywhole.”

GALEN WESTON CENTRE FOR FOOD ForBrandonGvazdaitis,workonhislatestweldingprojecthasalsobeenahomecomingofsorts,bringinghimbacktoDurhamCollege’s(DC)Whitbycampus,wherehegraduatedfromtheWeldingprogramin2014,tocontributetothenextphaseofdevelopmentattheW.GalenWestonCentreforFood(CFF).

Formany,whentheythinkoftheCFF,thecollege’shospitality,culinaryandhorticultureprogramscometomind,alongwiththecentre’saward-winningrestaurantBistro’67andretailstore,Pantry.Thefields,greenhousesandorchard that surround the building have become synonymouswiththefield-to-forkphilosophythose programs are based on and serve as a natural extension of what is being lived every day intheclassrooms,labsandkitchens.

However,itismorethanjustthegardensthataregrowingattheCFF.Thephysicalspacesandstructures have also undergone many changes sincethecentreopenedin2013anditsevolutionisnowcontinuingwiththreenewcapitalprojectsunderway.

FundedthroughthegenerosityofagiftfromtheW.GarfieldWestonFoundation,thevisionfor the CFF is being further implemented with thecreationofacoveredwalkwayandcanopyrunningbetweenthegreenhousestothebuilding,anoutdoorclassroomandoutdoorseatingareaforusebystudentsandthepublicalike.WhichiswhereGvazdaitisandhiscompanyPittedMetalcomein.

“Beingcontractedtoworkonthisprojectfeelslikethingsarecomingfullcircle,”hesaid.“It’sbeenreally rewarding to work at the campus where I did my training and took my classes and I’m proudtobepartofallofthepositivechanges anddevelopmentattheW.GalenWestonCentreforFood.”

Workonthecanopywasrecentlycompleted,whiletheoutdoorclassroomandseatingareaarescheduledforcompletionforspring2018.

DURHAM COLLEGE LAUNCHES FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND APPLIED RESEARCH AI HUBDurham College (DC) recently announced the launch of the Durham College Hub for AppliedResearchinArtificialIntelligenceforBusinessSystems,tobeknownmorecommonlyastheAIHub.Housedwithinthecollege’sOfficeofResearchServices,InnovationandEntrepreneurship(ORSIE),theAIHubofferssmallandmediumenterprises(SMEs)amuch-neededaccesspointtotherapidlygrowingfieldofArtificialIntelligence(AI).

“ThepromiseofAIisbold,butforthe98percentofOntariobusinessesthatidentifyasSMEsthechallengesofAIadoptionaresignificant,”saidDebbieMcKeeDemczyk,deanofORSIE.“SMEs need help understanding this complex field,accessingresourcesanddata,andfiguringouthowtheyintersectwiththeirbusiness.TheAIHubwasbornoutofourteamidentifyingthe need to bridge this gap between AI and the organizationswhostandtobenefitfromit.”

DC’sAIHuboffersindustrypartnersaccesstotechnicalexpertise,state-of-the-artfacilitiesandlearningplatforms,andstudentswhoareemergingleadersintheirfields,sothatthroughappliedresearchprojectstheymayuncoverbusiness insights and implement intelligent andautonomoussolutionstoincreasetheir

AI is transforming the ways in which business systems,consumerinteractionsanddevicesarebeingdevelopedandused.BybuildinguponCanada’sestablishedleadinAIscientificresearch,DC’s AI Hub aims to ensure this emerging and vitalcompetitiveadvantageforbusinesscanbeunderstood,developedandadoptedbySMEs.

TheAIhubisfocusedonhow“narrowAI”canbeusedtohelpSMEsunlockcompetitiveadvantagethroughtheadoptionofAI.NarrowAIreferstoanysoftwarethatusestechnologiessuchasmachinelearning(ML),decisionsupport,naturallanguageprocessingandautomationtorecommendstrategicoptions,makedecisionsautonomously and act in a manner that would be consideredintelligent.

InadditiontosupportingSMEs,theAIHubalsoprovidesDCstudentsandalumniopportunitiestogainhighlysought-afterAIandMLskillsandexperiencetoimprovetheircompetitivenessintoday’sjobmarket.

“DC was early to recognize the importance of embracing AI both on campus and within the region’sbusinesscommunity,”saidDCpresidentDonLovisa.“Inresponse,ourleadershipteam

movedquicklytoprovidedirectionandfinancialsupport to help establish the AI Hub and its outreachefforts.”

AspartoftheAIHub’sestablishment,DCalsolaunchedthreeinternalprojectstoacceleratethecollege’sadoptionofAIandcommissionedanewGPU Accelerated AI Systems Lab for research and teachingpurposes.

ThecollegehasalsojustannounceditseighthAIappliedresearchprojectthatlaunchedin2017.DCandToronto-basedflitePLANInternational(flitePLAN)arepartneringonaprojectusingAIandadvanceddevelopmenttechniquestoaddressthefinancialandecologicalbenefitsoffueloptimizationincommercialaviation.

“Fuel is the single largest variable expense for an airlineanditsefficientuseoftenisthedifferencebetweenprofitabilityandlossforacarrier,”saidBernardGonsalves,founderandCEO,flitePLAN.“UsingAIandpredictivemodeling,ourproprietaryplatformwillcreateuniquefuel-savingprofilesforeachcommercialflight,providingexpertrecommendationstothecaptainonwaysthatfuelcanbesavedwhilestillmaintainingsafetyandconformingtoregulatoryrequirements.We are excited to work with DC’s AI Hub to advanceouradoptionofAIandmobileapplicationdevelopment.”

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: MANJULA SELVARAJAH AND BRANDON NOLAN TALK CAREERS AND LIFE AFTER COLLEGE AT ALUMNI IN THE PITFromlifeasaTorontomarketingexecutivetotellingthecity’sstoriesontheradioandfromacareerintheNHLtorunningthreesuccessfulbusinesses,twoDurhamCollege(DC)graduatesreturnedtocampusonFebruary6tosharestoriesabouttheircareersandlifeaftergraduationduringtheannualAlumniinthePitevent.

Thisyear’seventfeaturedManjulaSelvarajah,a2014gradofthecollege’sJournalism–PrintandBroadcastprogram(nowknownasJournalism–MassMedia),andBrandonNolan,a2013BusinessAdministration–Marketinggrad(nowMarketing–BusinessAdministration),whoofferedinsightsintohowthey’veachievedsuccessforthestudentsandemployeesinattendance.

MANJULA SELVARAJAH:NowaToronto-basedfreelancejournalistandoccasionalon-airtechnologycolumnistandproducerforCBCRadio,includingthepopularradioshowMetroMorning,Selvarajahlefthercareerasamarketingexecutiveandheaded backtoschoolafterbeinginspiredbyastorysheheard on the news about Tamil refugees arriving inCanada.

Driven by a desire to tell real stories that would notnecessarilybetoldbymainstreammedia,sheurged students in the audience to treat each day inclassasifitisalreadytheirjobandemphasizedtheimportanceofdoingamazingwork,regardlessofwhetherit’syourdreamroleornot.

ShealsocreditsherDCprofessorsandthefieldplacement she completed as part of her program withpreparingherforhercurrentrole.It’sajobthathastakenhertothefrontlinesofreportingthe news and has given her the opportunity to giveback,includingco-foundingthenon-profitorganizationTamilWomenRising.

BRANDON NOLAN:Nolanhasenjoyedadiversecareerbothonandofftheice.AproudOjibwayfromtheGardenRiverFirstNationinnorthernOntario,hegrewupspending the winter months playing hockey on an outdoorrink,beginninghisloveforthegameandeventuallyearninghimaspotwiththepros.AfterastintintheOntarioHockeyLeague,heenjoyedafive-yearprofessionalhockeycareerthattookhim all over the world before being cut short by a seriousconcussionsufferedwhileplayingfortheCarolinaHurricanes.

Afterrecognizingacollegeeducationwouldgivehimtheskillsheneededtosucceedinhispost-hockeycareer,heheadedbacktoschool.

Uponcompletinghisstudies,Nolanbegandownthe path that now sees him running successful businesseswithhisfatherandbrother,including3N Clothing Apparel and the 3|NOLANS First NationHockeySchool,aswellastheTedNolanFoundation,whichsupportsandencouragesAboriginal youth to pursue academic growth for a betterfuture.

HesharedhisstoryofgraduatingfromDCandtakingjobsthat,thoughnotideal,wereintegraltogettinghisfootinthedoor.Healsoencouragedstudents to remember that all the steps they take intheircareercanleadtotheirgoals,echoinghisco-panelist’semphasisondoinggoodworkandprovidinggoodservice.

YWCA Holiday Gifts TheYWCAraisesmoneyforwomen,youthandchildreninDurhamRegion.Duringtheholidayseason,thewomen’svolleyballteampurchasedunwrappedgiftsandnon-perishablefooditemsand donated them so the YWCA could distribute themtofamiliesinneed. Habitat for Humanity Durham Membersofthesoftballteamraisedmoneyforthe Habitat for Humanity Durham Region and volunteeredforaday,helpingpaintandputuptrimonabuildindowntownOshawa. Breast Cancer Fundraiser The men’s and women’s volleyball teams worked togetherthroughoutthemonthofOctober,whichisalsoBreastCancerAwarenessMonth,to

supportDurhamCollegealumnusCherylDustin(Barkley)inherpersonalbattlewithbreastcancer.Each member of the volleyball teams wore a pink shirt with the name of the person they wanted to supportandraisedover$500forCheryl. Play Global! Fundraiser Throughouttheirseason,thebaseballteam raised money for Play Global! at each home gamebysellinghotdogsandholdingraffles. PlayGlobal!isanon-profitorganizationthatteaches coaches and youth how to play baseball indevelopingcountries.TheyworkinUganda,Israel,Kyrgyzstan,andIndia.Theirfutureplans aretoexpandtotheUkraineandSouthAfrica. Rugby – High School Championship Members of the women’s rugby team volunteered at the high school championship hosted at the OshawaVikingsRugbyClubinRaglan.

Special Community Days The Durham Lords host a number of community daysattheirregularseasonhomegames,whereminor sports team or choirs perform before or duringagame. School Visits Members of the varsity teams visit elementary schools in the Durham Region and talk about the importanceofeducation,healthylivingandwhatit’sliketobeastudent-athlete.
