Family Fitness Night Thank you to our Grenoble Families for coming out to our Family Fitness night and helping to make it a success. Staff and families had a great night exercising, learning about healthy beverages and making some easy, healthy snacks. We are looking forward to our second Family Fitness evening in May. More information will follow in the coming months.

Kids Can Cook 2 (Cook book Program) Why not include children in cooking? Spending time in the kitchen and cooking new recipes helps children develop a positive connection to all different types of foods including fruits and vegetables. Building positive experiences with fresh foods is important because healthy foods are the foundation for good nutrition. Children will also learn basic cooking skills that they can use for the rest of their lives. Some of the other benefits of cooking with your children are: it will develop an appreciation for real ingredients, broaden the palate, learn the value of planning, practice good timing, build math skills, see chemistry in action, develop confidence in the kitchen and appreciate the chef. We have started a new program at Grenoble. Cook books are available for students to sign out from the library. Please try one of the recipes and fill in the card located in the bag. Once you are finished with the book send it back to school for other families to enjoy.

World Read Aloud Day - February 16, 2017

We will be celebrating World Read Aloud Day on February 16 from noon to 1:30 pm. Every year World Read Aloud Day calls global attention to the importance of reading aloud and sharing stories.

World Read Aloud Day motivates children and adults to celebrate the power of words. This global literacy movement is about taking action to show the world that the right to read and write belongs to all people. World Read Aloud Day encourages everyone to celebrate the day by grabbing a book, finding an audience, and reading out loud.

World Read Aloud Day is celebrated by millions of people in more than 100 countries thanks to people like you who participate and spread the word across the globe!

Here at Grenoble, we will be having an assembly at 12 noon. Our special Guest, Gurdeep Ahluwalia from CP 24 will read his favourite book at the assembly. After the assembly, there will be guest readers reading to the students in the classrooms.

We encourage all students to dress as their favourite book character for the assembly.

GRENOBLE SCHOOL COUNCIL

UPDATE FOR ALL PARENTS

Dear Parents/Guardians, Firstly, on behalf of Grenoble School Council thank you to all who came out to support us at the first annual Grenoble Winter Ball. The event was a great success and we hope to make it a new tradition. As a group, School Council reached out to many community businesses for their support and the response was overwhelming. It was great to see the community come together to help us organize such a great event. We would like to take this opportunity to share with you our fundraising progress so far. Through various raffles, bake sales and donation from local community business we have been able to raise approximately 50% of funds needed to provide Grenoble with a new audio system in the gym. We hope that with continuous fundraising efforts we will be able to accomplish this goal within this academic year. In addition, to a new audio system for the gym we are also trying to fundraise for inventory for a new Lego/Robotics Club for the students, to purchase new indoor/outdoor sports equipment and to help us organize more parent and student social events. In the next few weeks, we will have a giant Goal Thermometer in the front hallway of the school to show off our progress with raising funds for Grenoble School. Here are some upcoming fundraising events over the next few months at Grenoble: Feb 16th – Numeracy Night /EQAO Night – Bake Sale March 3rd – Dance-A-Thon – Snacks/Treats Sale (Order Forms will be sent home prior to the date) We encourage you to participate in school council meetings and fundraising initiatives and look forward to a great year ahead. Thanks, Grenoble School Council

School Success at Grenoble Public School

A word from your ESL teacher

Our Grade 1-5 Reading Club

In November 2016 we started our Artsy's reading club where our grades 1-5 students learn different languages. For that, we thank our parent volunteers who commit their own time by coming and reading for us during the nutrition break on Wednesdays!

In November and December we learned Punjabi and read English and Punjabi book called Town Musicians of Bremen. This is a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm that was translated to English and Punjabi .

Starting in January, we will be reading books in Italian and English. Our plans also include reading Spanish/English and Hindi/English books later this year.

Monthly Reading Tip Make sure your children see you read every day. When children see adults read they know it is important and worthwhile. Remember, you are their primary role model.

Math Tips for February

This month’s math challenge theme is Math Relationships we see or hear in our community. Math (spatial) relationships explore the concept of where objects are in relationship to something else. Learning to understand spatial

relationships helps children talk about where things are located. To make learning fun at home, we encourage parents to try the following activities with their children: - hide a toy in the room, and give directions to find the toy using spatial terms. For example, you might say, "Look behind the chair or look under the bed” - build a structure together using wooden blocks or other objects around the house. While doing so, encourage your child to use spatial terms such as under, above, behind, on top of, near, far, etc. - use puppets and ask kids to act out terms such as above, in front of, inside, outside, nearby, far away, etc. in a play - go on nature walks and point out objects in the neighbourhood and ask your child to describe it’s location using some of the terms listed above - ask your child to give you verbal or written directions (or drawings) to the park or the grocery store Thank you from the Numeracy Team.

Lollipop Moments

What is a lollipop moment? A moment where one person changes the life or perspective of another through a simple gesture. The giver of the “lollipop” may or may not be aware of its impact on the receiver, and the receiver may or may not have told the giver how it impacted them. Who came up with lollipop moments? Drew Dudley is the former Coordinator of one of the largest university leadership development programs in Canada. He is a professional speaker, writer, educator and entrepreneur. How does Drew Dudley believe that lollipop moments can change our understanding of leadership? Dudley says that when we start to look for and acknowledge lollipop moments, we add value to everyday leadership and we show others that they can be leaders. We also start to believe that we can be leaders ourselves with our own simple actions. Monthly Challenge We do not often make these moments known to the people who make a difference in our lives. We would like to challenge our Grenoble families to take the time this month and the months to come to really make the little moments BIG deal. Tell the people in your lives how important they are to you and why? Show appreciation for all the simple daily things that others do for you, and let’s make them the big things in life. A smile, door hold, help with making breakfast can go a long way! The Grenoble Climate Team

Offence Declaration required for returning volunteers Parents play an important role in the development and education of their children and in the success of the school community. At Grenoble Public School, we welcome and encourage the participation of parents and community members, and are grateful for the countless hours our volunteers contribute throughout the school year. To volunteer at our school, you must complete a short interview and a criminal record check. A criminal record check is required for all school volunteers in Ontario. Even if you want to accompany your child on a field trip, you need this record check.

Once you have completed the process, you are on file with the Peel District School Board as being a school volunteer. All returning volunteers will receive an Offence Declaration form that must be filled out and returned to the board office each year. Completing the Offence Declaration will ensure that you can continue volunteering in the next school year. Expect to receive the form in February.

Grenoble Public School puts the spotlight on Black Heritage

In December 1995, the House of Commons officially recognized February as Black History Month, following a motion introduced by the first black Canadian woman elected to Parliament, the Honourable Jean Augustine. During Black History Month, students, staff and parents from across Peel will participate in a number of activities that promote the understanding of the many contributions made by black Canadians. Here is a list of events happening at Grenoble Public School Black History Heritage Assembly on February 24 at 1:45pm.

What you need to know about head lice

What is head lice?

Head lice are tiny insects that live on the scalp where they lay their eggs. They have three stages: the egg (nit), the nymph and the adult. Head lice do not spread diseases and cannot be spread between animals or pets and humans, only through direct contact between people. Head lice spread easily, especially where people are in close contact. They are very common among school-aged children or children attending child care, where they spread through direct hair-to-hair contact or directly by sharing things like hats, combs, hairbrushes or headphones. One of the first signs of head lice is an itchy scalp. However, children can have head lice for several weeks with no symptoms. If you think your child has head lice, check their hair for nits right away, then again after one week and after two weeks.

What to do if your child has lice Parents are advised to keep their child at home until they have been treated for lice. Students may only return to school if they are “nit-free.” If your child has live lice, ensure that they avoid head-to-head contact with other children until the lice are gone. Children should not share combs, hairbrushes, caps, hats or hair ornaments. You should also check all family members for head lice. Be sensitive to your child’s feelings and let them know that having head lice does not mean they are not clean. Head lice can be treated with the following approved insecticides:

pyrethrin (found in R&C Shampoo + Conditioner)

permethrin (Nix Creme Rinse or Kwellada-P Creme Rinse)

lindane (Hexit Shampoo or PMS-Lindane Shampoo).

Health and Physical Education Curriculum supports the physical, emotional and social well-being of students Working together to keep our students safe and healthy The Peel District School Board implemented the Ministry of Education’s revised Health and Physical Education (HPE) curriculum in the 2015-16 school year. The curriculum is divided into four elements that work together to support the physical, emotional and social well-being of students:

active living

movement competence

living skills

healthy living Peel staff will again teach the human development and sexual health component to students, beginning spring 2017. This provides time for teachers to develop strong relationships with their students prior to this phase. Advance notice letters will be sent home with students two weeks prior to the human development/sexual health lessons. Families can submit religious accommodation requests at any time prior to the lesson by contacting the school directly. To get more information on how the HPE curriculum will be taught, please visit our website at www.peelschools.org/HPE.
