Well, hello once again....another month has passed....in fact the months go by a whole lot faster than I would really like, but I guess that’s what it’s really like for of us during these so-called “Golden Years”. CLUB NEWS

Remember, it’s AGM time once again. Wednesday February 11 at 1pm is the time

when it all happens in the Rotary Hall. It’s your opportunity to listen in on year end

reports and involve yourself in the election of Executive Members. All but one of

the present executive has put their names forward once again for another term.

The one member leaving us aft er four years on board is Director Rick Forward. I’d

like to take this opportunity to thank Rick on everyone’s behalf for his input and

dedication over those years. Your contributions were very much appreciated. By

the way, we have some great door prizes that will be distributed to lucky winners

that are in attendance at this years AGM.

It was great to see good attendance at the recent visit of the BC Seniors Advocate.

I was out of town and unable to attend but I’m told that interest was high....many

good questions and many, I hope, good answers. It’s great that these people

are able to get out and about in the province and get a feel for what are the real

issues facing our sector of society. My understanding is that transportation and

housing issues were big here in Courtenay. Hopefully in the future we are able to

continue with these type of information opportunities and in fact we are presently

in the midst of setting up a meeting with the CEO of St Josephs Hospital. She

has asked to come and speak on the future of St Josephs aft er our new hospital is

completed. She will be seeking your ideas on future uses. Hopefully that visit will

come together soon...stay tuned.

Ticket sales have begun for the Evergreen Club Centennial Raffl e. This is a special

raffl e draw in celebration of our city’s 100th birthday. Our Evergreen Quilters

have donated two beautiful quilts and there is also an array of other prizes. Please

purchase some tickets in support of this project as proceeds go directly toward

Evergreen Club equipment. Draws take place on Wednesday April 1st.

I would like to take a moment to acknowledge “The Greenes” as last months

“Volunteers of the Month”. Ginny and Fred have been club members for a

number of years and a great write-up of their club involvement was in the January

newsletter. Fred is also a member of the club executive. Well done to both of you

and THANKS for your dedication.

And fi nally our sincerest condolences to family of Harry Prudin on his passing.

Harry was an exceptional person and and a devoted member of the Evergreen

Club. He will be missed!!

And now to end it for another month just give this some thought....”In the end,

we only regret, the chances we didn’t take, the relationships we were afraid to

have, and the decisions we waited too long to make....Adios ...see you at the

AGM.....gk

1pm in the Evergreen Lounge on the 2nd & 4th Wednesday of each monthMexican Train is a game played with

dominoes. The object of the game is

for a player to play all the dominoes

from his or her hand onto one or

more chains, or “trains” emanating

from a central hub or “station”.

Instruction provided. There are usually

about 3 tables of play. If you want

to have some mid-week fun, come

and join us. 25 cent drop in fee.

Let us call you, “Sweetheart”, anytime

but specially this month. We have

wound up a fantastic group who love

to come out and sing and most of all

have fun.

Sad news – we lost our Harry Pruden,

Harry and Shirley helped get our group

off the ground. A big group of us went

to Harry’s service and sang two of his

favorites, we were appreciated and I

know Harry would have been proud

of us.

We sang songs from around the

world – makes you want to do a bit of

travelling. Ha!Ha!

We still meet every Friday, 10:00am –

11:30am in the Rotary Hall.

Hope to see all of you

Donna Bews

ChoristersA busy start to the New Year and still

more new members attending our

meetings which are held on the First

and Third Tuesdays of the month in the

Soroptimist Lounge. The Refl ection

Photographs were well received and

we had a tie for the photograph you

liked the best - the refections from

an offi ce building and the rather

mysterious columns which were

taken in a water storage cistern in El

Jadida in Morocco. Thank you for you

participation. We contnued to focus

on education with a session on Flash

Photography which we followed up

with a home-work exercise to show

we learnt something! The second

item as another in the series of DVDs

from Joel Sartori, a well respected

National Geographic photographer

who focussed on Macro photography.

This also led us to consider Focus

Stacking, a technique to increase

the depth of fi eld in a photograph

which can be quite a challenge with

macro. Again we set ourselves some

home work to show we understand

fi ll-in fl ash and using refl ected fl ash

light to give better illumination. The

Refl ection photos will remain up for

a few days into February if you didn’t

have chance to see some fi ne work.

We plan a photoshoot to Nymph Falls

in February. Come and join us any

time there is bound to be something

you can learn with a friendly bunch of

people.

Friday Night DancesHere we are in February 2015 already

This month (February 20th) we can

enjoy the terrifi c music and singing of

Dan Hughes Band, what a wonderful

way to spend a Friday Night. Guests

receive a very warm welcome when

they arrive at 7:30 p.m. then at 9:00

p.m. we have a break for coff ee, tea

and cookies. At the end of the second

dance we give two $5.00 gift cards,

from Tim Horton’s, to the winners

of the spot dance. It makes our job

so pleasant when we see everyone

up dancing and we respect those

who come to listen to the music and

visit. Most times there are six or more

volunteers at each dance in order to

make it as super as we can.

Cost of living aff ects all of us including

those who travel to be with us at The

Evergreen Club. Our bands travel

from Duncan, Nanaimo, Campbell

River, as well as Courtenay and

surrounding area. So far we have had

very positive responses to the fact that

we have to raise the entrance fee. We

can quote some of our guests who

say that they would be comfortable

with the increase of $2.00, making the

fees $7.00 for members and $9.00 for

non-members. Bring some friends, or

come by yourself, all welcome.

The Folk Band will meet Tuesday,

”55+ BC Games” - Join the “In crowd” in the Province of BC!Beginning this year, the province of BC is projected to have -for the fi rst time

in history- a majority of citizens aged 55 or older. This segment will drive many

aspects of British Columbia’s collective life style and continue to shatter old

notions of what it means to age.

It’s a new year and of course, with a new year comes the time honoured tradition

of making New Year’s Resolutions. How many have you made over the years?

I for one, have broken many more than I actually fulfi lled. Have you planned to

get in shape, work out more, lose some weight, perhaps gain some weight, quit

smoking, make new friends, do some volunteer work, play and enjoy life more,

get involved in something? The solution to achieving many of your resolutions

could be as easy as participating in the annual 55+ BC Games.

If you are a resident of BC, 55 and older, you qualify -it’s as simple as that! All

you have to do is decide which activity you would like to take part in and away

you go. Many of the activities are separated into age categories so the older the

better- how oft en do you hear that these days? The Mission of the 55 + BC Games

is to improve the health, lifestyle and image of British Columbia’s 55+ population.

Several of the activities such as badminton, bridge, cribbage, darts,fi ve pin

bowling,fl oor curling,ice curling,ice hockey,pickleball, swimming,table tennis

and whist are in full swing during the winter months. Other activities such as

cycling, golf, horseshoes, lawn bowling,slo-pitch,tennis and track and fi eld are

more weather related and the qualifying rounds if required are later in the spring.

The 55+ BC Games give you a chance to “Strut your Stuff ” and at our age, why

not? It’s fun, good for the heart and the soul and gives you an opportunity to

demonstrate what it means to be a proud senior today. The 2015 games will

be held in North Vancouver from August 25-29. Check out the website at

www.55plusbcgames.org for details on the 2015 games plus lots of pictures and

results from last year’s fun and games in Langley.

Computer Club1pm, Soroptimist Lounge, Friday,February 6, 20152015 had a great start. We started our

fi rst meeting of the year with a great

demo of the Microsoft Surface Pro 3.

It is a wonderful piece of machinery,

and one that most of us would love to

own. All of this complex, compact

computer is fi t into a very effi cient and

small package.

Our meetings start with a timely topic,

with a question and answer period.

Following this, we have a round-

table discussion where all have an

opportunity to ask questions, or air

their computer frustrations.

We welcome all, novice and

experienced, alike. Our only

requirements are a current Evergreen

Club membership and a $1.00 drop

fee.

On Jan 6th, we fi nally celebrated Xmas

way to have fun and get your exercise

in. We play on Monday 11:30am –

1:30pm and on Tuesday 12:30pm –

4:00pm. You only pay .75 cents per

day and balls and bats are supplied.

Brazilian EmbroideryNot sure if this winter only seems

excessively long because I was here

for all of it or if winter really has been

I’ve enjoyed being here for Thursday

Brazilian Embroidery - the company is

hard to beat.

We are always looking for new

members and all enjoy helping others

learn this craft . There are no formal

lessons, strictly learn as you go, and

everyone pitches in to help beginners.

Although some of our members have

being doing Brazilian Embroidery

for quite a number of years we all

remember how diffi cult it seemed

when we started - that stage doesn’t

last long - the needle and thread

quickly become more cooperative

even though there are always new

stitches to learn.

All are welcome to drop in, meet

the members and see what they

are working on - Thursday 9:00

am to Noon in the Craft Room.

Tuesdays,February 10 & February 24,2015 , 4:30-6:15 pm Rotary HallWe are defi nitely running at full stride

with the advent of the New Year. Two

sessions already under our belts, and

also a couple of outside gigs at the

Care homes. Very satisfying to be

able to do something we so enjoy,

and have others we play for, enjoy it

as much.

We are an easy going group who love

to sing, and play the uke. We have

many beginners, and also a few more

accomplished individuals. As with

anything, to become accomplished,

one has to do some hard practising.

Remember what Mom used to say,

“practise makes perfect”.

We have a loaner uke, and it may be

signed out for several weeks to see

if you might like to go further, and

purchase your own.

Our music is sent to us via email,

so this gives us the opportunity to

practise (or not), as much as you like.

We start our sessions with fairly easy

tunes that almost all of us recognize.

The last 45 minutes is usually

decidated to chords and music, that

is just a bit more diffi cult.

Our only requirement is a current

Evergreen Club membership and a

$2.00 user fee.

For more information you can contact

Howie at [email protected], or

Terry at [email protected].

Another option is come on down, sit

in and listen, and see if this might be

something you might like to do.

lead Carrolle Allen. Congratulations

to both teams on their great bowling.

We have also fi nished our mixed

are skip – John Enns – second Marg

The winners were – skip Lyndon James

– second Rob Scharf and lead Pat

their great bowling. We are now back

to bowling aft er the Xmas & New Years

break. Our drop in days are Tuesdays

Liza busylizyshaw.ca

Happy GangIt’s February already and I imagine we

are all looking forward to Valentines

Day when we hope to get candy,

fl owers or cards. That’s how we

celebrate St. Valentine today but at

the end of the article I’ll tell you about

the customs of Celtic Folks.

Please note that our February meeting

has been changed from our usual time

and spot. The Soroptomist Room was

not available this month and since we

missed our Christmas Party because of

the fl ood we have decided to have a

lunch meeting instead. On Thursday,

February 19th at 11:30 we will be

meeting at the Bamboo Gardens on

Cliff Avenue for the buff et.

Now back to the Celtic customs:

Valentines Day was celebrated on St.

Valentines Eve and unmarried men put

the names of female acquaintances into

a vessel. They then drew names to see

whom they might marry. Later, eligible

girls adapted the same practice. Also,

boys would sometimes wear Valentine

slips on their sleeves and treat the girls

whose names were written on them.

St. Valentine became the patron saint

of lovers. Today in Celtic areas the

custom is to send anonymous cards

and gift s to those they admire. This

goes back to our own roots doesn’t it!

Hope you can join us for our Valentine

lunch. Please let me know if you plan

to attend.

DISHWASHERThis is a good place to meet new people and work as part of a dynamic team. One aft ernoon per month or more! 11:30am

- 1:30pm is the scheduled shift for dishwasher. There is no busing involved as patrons bring their dishes and trays back

to the kitchen for you. We have a quality restaurant dishwashing machine and training on how to use it is provided. Must

feel comfortable working alongside other volunteers. Everyone in the kitchen itches in (as some days can be busier than

others). Come and try us out.

Rose Jacobson

Our Rosy Valentine! What better way to celebrate the month known

for red roses than to celebrate our volunteer

Rose. Her background is an interesting one.

Rose served in the military during the war as

a wireless operator. Serving the military allowed her and her husband to travel

across Canada hitting every province except Newfoundland (Her daughter is

striking that off her bucket list and travelling with her there later this year!) They

were stationed in the Comox Valley in ‘54 and returned to stay in ‘63. Rose then

went on to work at the Credit Union and joined the Evergreen Club in ‘99. A year

later she obtained her Food Safe certifi cate and started volunteering in the kitchen.

Betty Annand says, “I think Rose has worked in the Evergreen Kitchen longer than

anyone I know! All those years of service should be acknowledged.” Rose says,

“It was Betty who totally talked me into joining drama. She needed bodies. I

had never done anything like it before... I mean in school I did Christmas shows.

But, you kind of did what you were told to do. Of course, I was happy to be

picked though.” This gal of 94 years (yes, you read that right!) is up for anything.

She laughs, “I love showing off !” She recently played a bag lady named ‘Mert’

alongside Ruth Hay’s bag lady named ‘Gert’. The previous year she played a

teenager. She remembers with a twinkle in her eye, “I wore a short leather skirt

for that character!” Rose went to many Senior Games around the province and

remembers fondly about the fun that was had. “We got to visit places like Prince

George, Prince Rupert, and Fernie”. Rose won many metals either with drama

and in later years she got them for swimming. Fellow Evergreen volunteer (and

Rose’s daughter) Lynne Grant says, “I have to book an appointment to see my

mother. She’s so busy!” Lynne is amazed that her mom still lives and looks aft er

her own home and drives for all her friends. “She’s really a remarkable person.

My mother never says anything bad about anybody.” She pauses and laughs,

“She may think it though!” Rose is also involved with other outside groups and

activities like Glacier Green Golfi ng, Probus, Bridge and Sendial. Rose has been

shopping and fi lling orders for other seniors at Thrift y’s Foods for ten years. As

our interview comes to a close it’s fi tting that Rose ends it by saying, “Well, I got

to go and visit and help my friend who is in the hospital and then get ready to go

play Bridge.” Thanks Rose, you’re an inspiration!

Test the Waters - Watercolours that is!

This workshop will introduce painters

to ‘wet in wet’ watercolour through

guided exercises and simple works.

The emphasis is on gaining a degree

of control and working with some

precision. The best results are

realized by timely interaction with the

drying of the work. Appreciation of

the state of the work and the degree

of haste required is gained through

experimentation and repetition.

Some colours are more mobile than

under varying degrees of moisture.

There are a few more tricky elements

and of course some tarting up at the

end is a useful trick. This workshop is

not suitable for those with no painting

experience.
