Dear Parishioners, Thank you for your recent donation of $240 to My Sister’s House. Your support enables
us to make a difference in the lives of women, children, and men in our community who
have been impacted by intimate partner violence and sexual assault. Your gift truly makes
a difference for the families we serve. Again, thank you.
Sincerely,

Each of us are familiar with the seasons related
to weather; winter, spring, summer, and fall. By the end
of this month, the days will be getting a little longer. The
warm air of spring will be on its way sooner than
later. We anticipate what the new season will bring.
The universal Church has a deep-rooted history of
looking at different times of the year as seasons for
worship. The Church year begins with the season of
Advent, a time of expectation centered around the birth
of Jesus. The next season of the church is called Epiphany. Epiphany centers on the “aha!”
moment of the magi making their journey to see the newborn king. We will encounter a new
season in the middle of February on Ash Wednesday; lent.
Lent is one of the oldest seasons of the Church. History shows that some of the
earliest Christians made it a point to focus on repentance and deepen their faith in preparing
for Easter. Easter is the main highlight of the Christian experience where Jesus’ crucifixion,
death, and resurrection are remembered. Seeking to develop a closer relationship with God
through Christ, early Christians took on the idea of giving something up. It was decided the
40 days leading up to Easter Sunday would be called the season of lent.
I encourage you to give up something for lent. It could be something as simple as not
drinking sodas. One could choose to give up those things that require more
perseverance. I’ve had friends who decided to give up eating out for lunch during lent. Some
of my friends took it a step further and gave the money being saved on not eating out to
organizations devoted to helping others.
Whatever we choose to give up for 40 days, we should understand why we are
participating in lent. When we have to fight the urge to give in, we should automatically think
of all Jesus has done for us. Jesus gave up his life on account of all human beings. His
death on the cross and resurrection from the grave signified that we all have been forgiven
from our wrongdoings if we choose to accept and believe in God’s ultimate grace. In the
words of Paul, it is by grace we have been saved through faith. Remember, we are all works
in progress when it comes to exercising our faith in God.
In Christ,
Kevin
