Hello Trebein Parents, What a wild few weeks we've had! It seems as though we've not seen the children a whole lot lately, but I for one, take comfort in knowing that their safety remains a top priority for our district. We continue to build understanding of differences among all people through various programs here at school. Our Every-body Counts program identifies and explains various disabili-ties and how these affect the lives of others. This program also points out the fact that we all have different abilities; thus making students more sensitive and understanding of each others' challenges. Our Character Education program also reinforces respect for others - as does the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program that is in place in our district. Our stu-dents have also focused on Black History Month as we con-tinue to educate our young people about the many chal-lenges and triumphs that have taken place throughout his-tory. While we do our best to instill these values in our students, we know that you are the primary teachers throughout their lives. And I must say, you have managed to raise some of the most polite, helpful, kindhearted children I have ever met! Thank you for sharing your children with us!

Dear PTO Members,
I am writing this letter on our 8th day of school cancellations
due to snow and/or extreme cold. I sincerely hope that you
have been able to take advantage of the free days to spend
quality time with your children. I have enjoyed the extra time
with my kids. I have seen children sledding, making snowmen,
and even skiing in our neighborhood. Due to the cold tem-
peratures, I am sure there has been even more hot cocoa
drinking, snuggling together while watching movies, and play-
ing games. But once they have finished all of those activities,
the stir-craziness sets in!
Your PTO has a few ideas to cure the wintertime blues! Our
social committee, who is always open to new members, has
been very busy planning some new and exciting social events.
On February 8th, from 6:30-9:00pm in the school cafeteria, we
will be hosting a Family Winter Formal Dance. We hope that
everyone will take this opportunity to participate in this family
date night. It will be such a fun event to get dressed up (not
necessarily in formal attire) and arrive at our winter
wonderland themed event. There will be a dance instructor
there teaching parents and students a dance, a DJ playing
music, cookies and punch, and lots of opportunities to meet
other Trebein families and set up play dates for the kids (and
maybe the parents, too) to help during those long winter days.
On March 1st, from 9:00am-12:00pm, we will be hosting a Dr.
Suess inspired celebration. We will be providing a “Green
Eggs and Ham” breakfast and doing lots of Dr. Suess themed
activities. Once spring arrives and we are excited to spend
time outside, we will be hosting our 1st Annual School Carnival
and participating in a joint venture with Coy Middle School to
host a 5K/10K fun run. Both events will take place on May
17th with the race in the morning and the carnival immediately
following and flowing into the afternoon.
I hope that you will plan to join us for all these exciting social
events!
Sincerely,
Chrisonna Anderson-Lutz

MINI MALL A SUCCESS!! The 5th grade students wrapped up their studies on economics by hosting the 1st Annual Trebein
Mini-Mall. Students applied their knowledge of factors of production, consumers, advertising, and
supply and demand to create goods and provide services. Booths included rainbow loom bracelets and
creations, cookie decorating, origami, nail salon, and much more. All money raised from the mini-mall
will be used for the 5thgrade end of year field trip. Thank you to all of our Trebein community for
your support of this activity. We look forward to opening again next year!

From Our School Counselor, Heather Tate
If you are looking for a good book to read during these cold, wintery days, check
out: “The Motivation Breakthrough-6 Secrets to Turning on the Tuned-Out Child”
by Richard LaVoie. The book has great advice on motivating students to do their
very best, and really stresses the role that we all share in helping them to achieve
that capability. Here is a highlight of some of the more practical information from
the book:
One of the greatest motivators is success. When children see that they can
accomplish something, it feels great and they want to continue feeling this
way. Continue to recognize your child’s accomplishments both big and small
and most importantly, acknowledge the hard work that it took for that suc-
cess to happen.
Look for family activities which reinforce everyone working together toward a
common goal (Ex: community service, game nights, gardening or other
household project).
Help children set realistic goals for what they hope to accomplish with impor-
tant things in their life (school, athletics, making friends, etc.). This helps
them feel in control of their progress and take a more active role in making
sure they accomplish it.
Children experience anxiety just as adults do. Be aware of the symptoms of
anxiety such as changes in eating or sleep patterns, physical symptoms such
as constant headaches or stomachaches, or withdrawing from things they
usually enjoy. Stress and anxiety can impact a child’s motivation for very
obvious reasons.
Show your children how much you value learning. Participate in school events,
speak positively about the school and your child’s teacher(s), and speak
positively about your own school experiences. Children are listening and
watching us more than we think they are. They will pick up on the things
that you say and the things that you don’t say as well.
Show confidence in your child’s ability to learn. Celebrate their accomplish-
ments and be careful in showing disappointment in setbacks. Praise the
process and talk with them about times that you may have struggled but
overcame an obstacle.
This is just a brief summary of some of the very practical advice this book has to
share. Motivating a child or helping children to find their own motivation can often
be an overwhelming task. This book helps to break it down and show us that we can
help build the self-esteem and motivation of our children with everyday moments
and simple activities!

There is a lot going on in the “social world”
right now. First off, I loved seeing so
many of you at Skateworld last Friday. We
had over 100 kids participate but I also
saw quite a few of you parents on your
skates! Thanks for braving the cold and
windy weather and coming out for a bit of
exercise and fun.
Our next big event is the upcoming Winter
Formal Family Dance on Feb. 8 at 6:30pm.
We have been working hard on making this
a very special evening for the whole family.
Due to the many recent school closings we
are running way behind on getting a flyer
out to you, so let me take this opportunity
to give you some information. This will be a
formal dance but please don’t let that word
scare you off. We wanted the kids to have
the opportunity to get dressed up and take
their parents out on a special “family date.”
No need to come in long dresses or tuxe-
dos, but do dress up in your nice Sunday
clothes as you will have the opportunity to
have professional pictures (individual or
family) taken at the dance. Christy and
Mark Dobyns of Portraitefx (one of our
Trebein parents) have graciously offered
to provide their professional services to us.
They have put together various portrait
packages at prices specially discounted for
the Trebein families in attendance. You
will receive a price list/order form to-
gether with the flyer. Order forms will
also be available on the day of the event.
We have hired a live DJ who will provide
the evening’s music and entertainment for
us.
A Word from
the Social Chair
There will also be a professional dance in-
structor at hand who will help us learn vari-
ous dances. Cookies and punch will be pro-
vided free of charge. Tickets for the
event are $5 in advance or $6 at the door
the evening of the event. All proceeds
from ticket sales will be donated to Feed
the Creek. It would help us enormously if
you could let us know in advance that your
family is planning on attending. Once you
receive the flyer please fill out the bottom
portion of it and return it to the school
with your payment. Since we are running
behind on getting the physical flyer to you
due to the school closings, it would also
help if you could send a quick e-mail to me
at [email protected] to make your
reservation. I am very much looking for-
ward to this event and I hope you will give
your kids the opportunity to invite you to
this special evening.
A look ahead to our March event: we are
planning a Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast
to honor Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 1 at
9am. The PTO will provide a hot breakfast
to your entire family for a very nominal fee
followed by many reading activities
throughout the school in conjunction with
the Read Across America program. We are
still in the planning stages for this event,
but you can look forward to exploring vari-
ous Dr. Seuss stories, making Gak, and
many other fun activities. Look for a flyer
to come home with your kids in the near
future.
As with all of our social events, I am in
HUGE need of people who are willing to
donate a couple of hours of their time (or
items that are needed like cookies, punch
bowls, Christmas lights, etc.) Please con-
tact me if you can help!

MESSAGE FROM VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR
First off, a BIG Thank you to all the volunteers who worked hard to get our Everybody Counts program up and running this year! We easily filled the volunteer spots and our programs are going successfully thanks to you! It really makes a difference when we have volunteers step up and help so out so
easily!
Our winter has started off slow, but we have TONS of fun family activities coming up! With so many things coming up this Spring, please take the time to consider volunteering for at least 1 event. At the be-ginning of the year most everyone filled out a pledge to give at least 2 hours of time back to our school. If everyone can give 2 hours at one of the Spring events, such as the Formal, Dr. Suess Breakfast, School Carnival or our inaugural 5 / 10K race we will be in great shape! It takes a team to run these events, so please consider being part of the team- a little help will go a long way- and the great memories for your kids
will last forever!

Join the Facebook Group –Military Families of Beavercreek. It’s an informal support group for military families (Active, Guard or Reserve) with school-aged kids (or soon to be) who live in the Beavercreek area. Our goal is to support and connect with each other and our children. This is a place to ask questions about schools, connect our mil kids, and help navigate our way through this assign-ment. Military children are unique. From the many moves they've endured, stress of deployments to the educational imbalances of multiple school districts - military children have different stressors than many of the peers. This group is great way to find support for yourself and your kids. We post information about Beavercreek City Schools, WPAFB youth information, research and articles on parenting military children and information on educa-tion. Find us on Facebook – Military Families of Beavercreek!
