Dear Parents/Guardians: In January, we celebrated our students’ academic and behavioral accomplishments during our Second Quarter Honor Roll Assembly. Many students had the opportunity to walk across the stage and accepted awards for their hard work and diligence toward their education. Thank you to all of the parents and guests that joined us for these celebrations. As we closed out the month of January, our first and second grade students were administered the District’s Mid-‐Year Assessment in Reading. The results from this test will be used to determine how much your child is learning or has progressed in their current grade. Also, our Kindergarten through Second Grade students enjoyed the children’s author, Kim Cameron. Ms. Cameron shared her new book, Seaper Powers with our students on January 17th. Seaper Powers is a magical tale about a little girl named Emma, who uncovers a special power that allows her to talk to fish. With her new found ability, Emma searches for buried treasures with the help of two sea creatures. Our students were excited to have met the author and amazing venture. Fourth Grade students are preparing for the FCAT Writes Assessment. This assessment will be administered on February 25th and 26th. Students have been in our FCAT Writing Camp each day. Please join us in encouraging your child/ren to write at home every night. I would like to thank you all for your continued support.
Respectfully Yours,Deborah A. PeeplesDeborah A. PeeplesPrincipal

Community Service
Village Elementary School February 21, 2014
Please support us by donating to this meaningful program.
All donations will go to the American Heart Association.
Second Grade NewsSecond grade has begun studying human body systems. Students were introduced to cells, organs and other systems of the body and their functions. Specifically, students will dig deeper into the skeletal, muscular, nervous, and respiratory systems. Our reading focus will be sequencing events. Please have students practice this at home by giving them specific steps to follow in sequential order. The Second Graders took the Primary Reading Assessment on Monday, January 27, 2014. In writing, we will continue to focus on personal narratives. Encourage your child to write a story about a personal experience that they’ve had. Make sure they include as many details as possible about their experience. The Second Grade team would like to thank all of our parents for working continuously to support the students at Village Elementary. The Second Grade Team

Urban Garden Project
The Urban Garden Project is in collaboration with the City of Sunrise. The goal is to develop a learning garden that will provide hands-‐on instructional resources for our students, which will reinforce critical lessons in math, science, writing, reading, nutrition and fitness. Our goal is to plant familiar vegetables and herbs, as well as to introduce new plant varieties to our students. The project was jump-‐started with a poetry writing workshop with our fourth graders. Poet Ashley Jones visited on January 17, 2014. Our fourth grade students learned about good nutrition and the food pyramid, while focusing on creative poetry.
5th Grade Reptile Show
S.T.A.M.P. Florida Atlantic University Field Trip

Fifth Graders were excited to learn about reptiles at our live reptile show on January 31st. Students learned about many reptiles that are native to the State of Florida. Students learned how plants and animals, including humans, interact with and depend upon each other and their respective environment(s) to satisfy their basic needs. This interactive show brought these animals up close and personal for our students.
The S.T.A.M.P. students had a chance to actually experience college life at a glance. The students participated in a field trip to Florida Atlantic University on January 22nd. The students had a chance to experience campus life. They had a chance to speak with counselors and ask questions related to college life, activities and cost. As the students prepare for college, yes prepare for college, they can come up with a plan for the future that will include the important facts needed to attend college.
