As another year draws to a closeCamelford Town Band enjoys a littlerespite following a busy festiveseason. And what a season it hasbeen! December flew into full actionstarting with a beautiful and crispevening for the switch on ofCamelford Christmas Lights. It was asight to behold as the town was lit upand carols sung around the tree. Thefollowing day was the Band’sChristmas Dinner at Bowood. Achance for the band to socialisealong with friends and family andfollowing tradition the awards arehanded out. The awards comprisingSoloist and Bandsman of the Yearare decided by our MD StephenWagstaff and Chairperson MarneyBaker, as with recent years thePlayer’s Player is voted for byplaying members of the band. It waswith great pleasure that this year theSoloist went to Emma Davey,Bandsman of the year was awardedto Sally Rickard and our Player’sPlayer was Lewis Baker. The YouthBand awards are also presented atthe Dinner and were this yearawarded to Jenna Moore and

Christmas is a special time of theyear, but made ever more enjoyablewhen playing in a Brass band. Fromcarolling with the local contingent ofscouts to marching through Tintagelin the pouring rain and traditionalcarol services at Treneglos. Withoutdoubt however the highlight formany is the challenge of playinglouder than the congregation atHallworthy Carol Service in theLivestock Market. It’s a very rareoccurrence for a Band to beoutsung (or sat in an auction ring)!

2013 gave the band a lot to aim forand some extreme new heights toreach, especially with the on-goingfundraising for a much neededtrailer. Now is our chance to say ahuge thank you to all the localbusinesses that have so generouslydonated time, produce, money andeffort to our Band, to YOUR Band.Donations from Dairy Crest,Western Power and to Rob Rotchellfor the donation from CornwallCouncil. Without your help wecouldn’t have reached our target soquickly.

Finally, on behalf of the Band wewould like to wish you a Very HappyNew Year, and may 2014 bringeverything you hope for.

“Harbour Happenings”The new year has brought change at Souls Harbour; we welcomed Morten andElinTangen from the Salvation Army in Norway who have come to work withus for a year. They were married last summer and wanted to give a year toGod in His service. By trade Morten is an Audi engineer and Elin is in theambulance service. At the moment in their hometown it is minus 12 andsnowy so they are enjoying the balmy conditions in Camelford.Recently our young people had a community service day, you might have seenthem in high-viz vests as they picked up litter around the town. They alsohelped a young mum with a garden clear up. This is to be a regular event intheir varied programme organised by youth leaders Grant and JenniThompson. At the moment an Alpha Course is being run at our cafe as a joint venture withthe other three Camelford Churches. Each Tuesday evening for 10 weeks agroup are gathering to enjoy a meal (which the churches take it in turns tocook) and watch the DVD series which are a beginners guide to followingJesus. The course is such a success that we anticipate running another in theAutumn. If you are interested please speak to any of the churches or use theinfo below. The course is free.We hope you enjoy reading about the ‘happenings’ at Souls Harbour eachmonth, and that you’ll consider joining us sometime. Souls Harbour Church islocated on Clease Car Park in Camelford (PL32 9QX). Users of Camelford Leisure Centre arecelebrating the start of its second year as acommunity run centre.

In January last year the leisure centre re-opened its doors with new managementand a board of directors made up ofmembers of the community. The team, who took on the challenge of saving thevaluable facility that had been running at afinancial loss, report that the centre is inmuch better shape than previous years. They acknowledge that there is still a lot ofhard work to do to but plans are being putin place this year to ensure long termsustainability.

Many new members have signed up inJanuary as they set their goals for getting fitand healthy in the New Year.

Wayne Jordan-Shilling, Managing Director,is not surprised that so many people turn tothe leisure centre at this time of year, saying “January is a great time to start toget fit. People set their New Yearresolutions and they seem to have renewedenergy. After all that sitting around atChristmas and with Spring just round thecorner, there’s no better time to shake offthe bad habits and start working on leadinga healthier lifestyle. The leisure centre canreally help people achieve their goals.”.One man who has taken the plunge is Sam

Capstick (pictured, receiving his newmembership card.) Mr Capstick says: “Irecently suffered a torn cruciate ligamentplaying football and took advantage ofCamelford Leisure Centre’s brilliant specialoffer to help aid my recovery. The centre hasa real community feel and the staff arepassionate about making everyone’s visit ascomfortable and as beneficial as possible, whether you're after increased physical abilityor just good old fashioned fun!”

Sam went on to say that he appreciates theimportance of the community’s involvementin keeping the leisure centre viable: “I can'thelp but think with more participation frommembers of the public the centre will growinto something even more special and evennow it's certainly improved my lifestyle, Icouldn't live without it at the moment. Withthat I strongly urge members of thecommunity to give it a go and now is as gooda time as any with the new year offers.”

Camelford Leisure Centre will be marking itsfirst anniversary with an open day and anumber of special offers, including 12 monthsfor the price of 10 for new members who signup before the end of February, and themanagement team are happy to provideanswers to enquiries from anyone interestedto join in. More details can be found on thewebsite at or by phone on 01840 213188.

Camelfordʼs Town TeamYou may have seen a series on TV where Mary Portas was on BBC2 and then onChannel 4 about improving Town Centres and their shops . She is know as theʻQueen of Shopsʼ and has worked to promote some of the major shops such as JohnLewis and Topshop.

The Government recognised that Town Centres were getting run down and gaveMary £1,000,000 to divide between a few selected towns to try and make the townsmore attractive to shoppers. Camelford was one of 400 to apply for a grant, but Liskeard was the onlytown in the South West to gain an award. Later, it was announced, that Camelford had been awarded asmaller grant of £10,000.

A team of people were appointed to manage the project to promote Camelford as a good place tocome to shop or to stay for a while. The Town Team is made up of representatives from Camelfordtraders, the town council and the town forum. Initial discussions focused on developing a regularMarket to attract people into Camelford, but this proved a difficult task. Part of the project has been tofind out what people specially like about Camelford and what could make it even more attractive. Thefollowing is a brief summary of the responses from several public consultations:

What are the Special things about Camelford?Enfield Park 48%

Friendly, helpful people 44% Free parking and free toilets 36% Location - between moor and sea 22% Camelford Town Band 16% Footpaths and walks 10%  Childrenʼs play area        10%

Other comments - all less that 10% included: the leisure centre, carnival, the pop in, the river, libraryand allotments.

What would improve Camelford? Improved maintenance around town 20% More shops 14% Stopping dog mess and problems 14% A bakery 12% Improved shop signs 10% A bypass 10%

Other comments - all less than 10% included: a supermarket; more facilities for teenagers; stoppingantisocial behaviour; better promotion of Camelford; better traffic management; developingcommunity spirit; improved bus service; a cycle route; improved litter clearance; a new health centre;no more house building.NB. The percentages do not add up to 100% because some people had more than one suggestion.

The Town Team noticed that Camelford is not well sign posted on the A39 from both directions. Thisis being brought to the attention of Highways and a large ʻWELCOME TO CAMELFORDʼ sign hasbeen designed to encourage people to stay rather than drive straight through. You may have seenthe Dolly Delicious signs in some shops encouraging people to shop locally. Work is also being doneto promote walks in and around the town as well as developing Camelford Information booklets.Another scheme to improve Camelford is a specially planted ʻBee Corridorʼ to make the front ofEnfield Park more attractive to bees - and people! Many other issues are in discussion but the above arethe main points. If you have any good ideas please get in touch by phoning 07740 421 393.

Garden Stories from Cedarcroft - February 2014Hello, and welcome to our first chapter of 2014. I love this time of year, full of hope andthe promise of another great growing year. It is the very challenge of making a gardengrow, the satisfaction of seeing our results come to fruition and learning from ourmistakes, that makes gardening such a great activity. Here at Cedarcroft we will beopening our third show garden on 22 and 23 February. Pop down to listen to ourgarden designer and get some great inspiration. (See our advert opposite for fulldetails)

The JobsSnowdrops look stunning in carpets around the baseof shrubs and in borders and are a welcome sign thatspring is on its way. If you want to spread themaround your garden then now's the time to lift anddivide clumps and replant your new plants whereveryou want. Prune back shoots on mophead andlacecap hydrangeas to a pair of buds.Spread a thick layer of mulch around fruit trees andshrubs. Plant bare root roses, fruit bushes, trees andfruit canes into enriched soil. Prune blackcurrants, cut out a quarter of the old woody stems from matureplants. Sow the following crops in pots or trays in thegreenhouse, ready to transplant outside later:brussels sprouts, spring cabbage, cauliflower, onions, leeks, lettuce and salad leaves.

Creative ActivityBring an exotic touch to your patio, deck, or yard by making a small water garden in atub. Use a plastic or glazed ceramic container or a plastic-lined, wooden half-barrel asthe container, and add aquatic and marsh plants, and perhaps goldfish, for colour anddrama. Add two bunches of submerged plants, one floating plant, and one or twomarsh plants per square yard of water surface to keep algae in check. Plants shouldcover 60 to 70 percent of the surface.

Old garden titbitsUse chamomile tea to control damping-off fungus, which often attacks young seedlingsquite suddenly. Just add a spot of tea to the soil around the base of seedlings once aweek or use it as a foliar spray. Cinnamon makes an excellent natural fungicide. Mix inyour potting soil when planting seeds to prevent damping off of the seedlings. Gentlybrush your hands across your tiny seedlings several times a day. This stimulates themto grow slightly slower, resulting in stronger, sturdier stems. To turn a clay pot into ahose guide, just stab a roughly one-foot length of steel reinforcing bar into the groundat the corner of a bed and slip two clay pots over it: one facing down, the other facingup. The guides will prevent damage to your plants as you drag the hose along the bed.Egg cartons make excellent seed starters. Punch a hole in the bottom for drainage, fillwith potting soil, plant your seeds and watch them flourish.

Happy gardening from Penny and Sarah……………Cedarcroft Plants St Tudy

A Methodist Ministers’ ViewIn one of the monthly gardening magazines which I was looking through recentlymention was made that some commercial nurseries were increasing their growing ofpoppies in response to orders from local authorities and other bodies. These bodiesin planning their garden displays for 2014 are wanting to commemorate the outbreakof the First World War which was 100 years ago, in 1914. This anniversary will becommemorated in a number of ways through television programmes, the publishingof books, and local events. Each commemorative approach will have its own story, and it is the stories which we will remember. Stories have proved to be a powerfulmeans of communication through the ages. As we hear or read stories from the eraof the First World War doubtless we will be caused to think about the issues of warand peace in our current times. Many generations of people have been challenged to learn through the stories oftheir culture. Some of you may recallsinging a hymn, which for me was foundin the children’s section of the OldMethodist Hymn Book (1933 edition) thefirst line reads ‘God has given us a bookfull of stories.’ The Bible has in it manystories which have been shared throughthe generations. The earliest stories inthe book of Genesis cause us toacknowledge God as the Source of alllife, and goes on to deal with issues ofright and wrong, the challenge to live inGod’s way and other issues. Otherstories come to us from the years priorto the time of Jesus and cause us tothink about human nature. Jesushimself drew on these stories, and washimself a master teller of stories whichcaused people to think and askthemselves what the story meant for them. Just recall the stories of the GoodSamaritan (Luke 10), the Seed Sower (Matthew 13) or the Lost (Prodigal) Son (Luke15) as examples of stories which cause people to think even in our generation. Many stories have within them enduring truths. Some stories from the modern day should cause us to think as well. In the closingweeks of 2013 we heard of the death of Nelson Mandela, and saw the exuberantways in which his achievements in life were celebrated by the people who were thebenefactors of his work, ideals and sacrifice. A film about his life will shortly bereleased which if you are able to see it will cause you to think and reflect. The challenge to all of us is to be people who are searching, questioning, thinkingand reflecting to find the ways to satisfying, fulfilling and worthwhile living. There arealways new things to discover in our searching and pondering.Every Blessing Bryan Ede

The very beautiful cover of this book, part of which is shown above (we will show youmore when space permits) was designed by Miss M Rowland, and the typing of thebook was done by Miss D Lee. The book itself forms part of the Camelford Women’sInstitute archive. It is an important document not just for the WI, but for Camelford, andwe will bring you extracts from time to time in The Camelfordian.

This month’s extract is headed ‘Tales that are Told’ by Mrs K BogleThere was a magistrate in Camelford who, feeling very benevolent, said to a tramp

accused of begging “Not guilty, bot don’t do it again!”. - - - -The same magistrate went by landau to Tintagel. He alighted from the carriage andfailed to shut the door. Some time later a gust of wind blew the door shut and thedriver thought that his master had entered the carriage and consequently drove back toCamelford. He was very upset on opening the door at Camelford to see that themagistrate was not inside, but not so much upset as his master who was still atTintagel! - - - - An elderly lady living at Tregoodwell was extremely fond of her beer on Saturdaynight. Apparently it was exceptionally good beer at Camelford as she had greatdifficulty in getting home to Tregoodwell and had to spend the night lying in the hedge. This was most inconvenient as well as being most uncomfortable so she engaged ayoung man to fetch her each Saturday with a wheelbarrow and thus solved theproblem. - - - - Many tales are told about Camelford’s chief winter sport - salmon poaching! Onemagistrate was so interested that, when he saw lights on the river, he forgot to openthe window and pushed his head through the panes. - - - -

A man was being tried at Court for salmon poaching. All manner of implementswere arranged before the Justices that the Police had found near the spot where theman had been arrested. The magistrate, himself an expert on poaching, leaned overthe bench and said “You can’t gaff a salmon with any of those tools”. - - - -

Political feeling ran high, especially at election times. One party would book theveranda at the Darlington Hotel for their meeting and in opposition the other partywould conduct their meeting from the windows of the shop across the road.On one occasion a meeting was being held in the yard at the Kings Arms Hotel. Theplatform was a hay cart. Apparently the other side disagreed with all that was beingsaid and heckled until the meeting was in an uproar. Finally as neither side would givein some of the hecklers took up the shafts of the cart and pulled the still talkingpoliticians down through the streets.- - -

The Camel has overflowed its banks many times. One Camelfordian said that ifonly the Park gate had been shut the water wouldn’t have come into the town! - - -

An old Camelfordian went to London. He was greatly impressed and on his returnto his native town wanted to impress his friends and neighbours with stories ofmarvellous happenings in the City. One of his stories was about a cat - “Even the catsin London are wonderful - one jumped clean through a glass window without even ascratch.” - - -

One of the best known tales in Camelford is about the man who was cleaning thesewage filters. His mate saw him looking as if he had lost something. Finally, notbeing able to restrain his curiosity any longer the mate asked what was lot. “My coat”was the reply. “Don’t bother about that one - it was very shabby and time you threw itaway”. “It’s not the coat I’m worrying about as much as the pasty that’s in the pocket!.”

The SAS Orchestra has rehearsed at StThomas's Church for several years. However, as

there is an increase in players attendingrehearsals, they have been obliged to move tothe Camelford Hall. The rehearsal evening will

remain the same, Monday evening.

In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed framesby ropes. When you pulled on the ropes, the mattress tightened, makingthe bed firmer to sleep on.Hence the phrase...'Goodnight , sleep tight'

PROGRESS OF THE NEW OTTERHAM AND ST JULIOT HALLRegretfully things are presently progressing at a snail's pace, which is not at

all what was hoped for. Due to problems outside the control of the HallCommittee, the tenders for the work were originally due to be opened on 22nd

November but unfortunately a succession of delays pushed this date forward to10th January. It is now the fervent hope that building work will progress with

all due haste.MEANWHILE

on 29 March at 7 pm

Camelford & District Old Cornwall Society23 members braved the rain for the first meeting of the year on Monday13January. Phillip Lessels welcomed us all and we exchanged New Yearwishes. There was no speaker as it was a members evening. We looked at theprogramme for the year ahead, which was put together by Ethel Broad andkindly printed by Denis Lusby. Denis updated us on the attempts to improveaccess to the Charlotte Dymond memorial. This is located at Roughtor. Ethelcompiled a Cornish quiz which resulted in many heads being scratched. Ithink some of us even learnt something! The evening concluded with theusual raffle and refreshments.

Our next meeting at The Clease Hall, Camelford will be on Monday 10th

February at 7.30pm. Mr Tim Dingle will be giving an illustrated talk on TheGildhouse at Poundstock. Everyone is welcome.
