Presidents’ Letter Dear University Woman’s Club Members,

The 2013-2014 UWC year began on a high note – the annual Fall Reception, planned and organized by Michele Fletcher. The FedEx Global Education Center on the UNC campus was perfect for our event. Our guest speaker, Chancellor Carol Folt, gave a delightful talk on her personal and professional background, her family, and her enthusiasm for her new role as UNC’s chancellor. It is not an exaggeration to say she charmed us all! The calendar of enjoyable social events, informative and entertaining speakers, and well-planned excur-sions continued into December. Membership Chair, Margy King, was responsible for planning the October New Member Coffee, held at the beautiful home of member and former president, Florence Peacock.

Also in October, Katherine Savage presented the Fall Program, featuring popular speaker John Shelton Reed, William Rand Kenan, Jr. Professor Emeritus of Sociology at UNC-Chapel Hill. On October 30, thanks to Jean Holcomb and her travel committee, many of us enjoyed a fun-filled and informative “Day in Mayberry” when we traveled to Mt. Airy. Did you know that Mt. Airy is home to the largest stone quarry in the country? The December Holiday Reception is always a favorite event, and this year was no exception. Many new members were in attendance, greeted by ambassadors recruited by Paula Easton, event organizer. She also intro-duced the use of E-invitations. The Holiday Excursion, also organized by Jean, included a very fascinating tour of the Chatham County Courthouse in Pittsboro, lunch at Mrs. Lacey’s Tea Room in Sanford, and a musical revue at Sanford’s Temple Theatre. Now we look forward to spring and our Annual Meeting and Spring Program in March, and the Spring Luncheon in April. Both Barbara Day, who is organizing the March program, and Freya Mechanic, who is orga-nizing the April luncheon, have identified speakers whose names you will immediately recognize and with whom you will enjoy spending time. Watch your email – or mail box if you do not have email – for detailed information on these upcoming events, and the Spring Excursion.

When the opportunity presents itself, please say, “Thank you” to the Board members who have worked so diligently behind the scenes this year to make the University Woman’s Club the organization you want it to be. Michele Fletcher serves as 1st Vice President and stepped in when I could not be available for a meeting or event. Paula Easton, serves as 2nd Vice President and Corresponding Secretary, and Dee Lowdermilk, Recording Secretary, also edits the beautifully well-done newsletter you are now reading. Treasurer Betty Francisco and As-sistant Treasurer Ellen Johnson keep our Club’s financial house in order, and Laurie Norman, Betty and Ellen worked VERY hard to publish our Brochure and Handbook. Ellen also oversees our UWC web site. Myrna Bower, Club Historian, is always interested in any memorabilia or tidbits of information you may have in your possession that relate to the UWC. Carol Ziemiecki keeps up with the many interest and activity groups, and Nancy Robinson sees that you receive the emails that keep you abreast of what is happening within the Club. In March the Nominating Committee, chaired by Hannah Andrews, will present slate of officers for the 2014-2015 Club year. And we could not fulfill our commitment to provide scholarship assistance to a young fe-male student from Orange County without Annette Litzenberger, who works closely with the University Office of Development. As your President, I hope to have the opportunity to see and speak to you at one or all of our spring events. With Best Wishes, Linda Naylor

New members had an opportunity to meet UWC Board members and to learn more about the Activity/Interest groups and upcoming UWC programs. All members are encouraged to bring guests and prospective members to any of our pro-grams and activities. As usual, lunch reservations will need to be made in advance. Holiday Reception Our annual Holiday Reception was held on December 5 from 1-3 at the Horace Williams House. It was a great afternoon with mild temperatures outside and almost 100 of us attend-ing. The food was perfect —our thanks to those brought a food item to share. The punch was a big hit down to the last drop and graciously served by many of our past Presidents. Thanks go to my committee of Terry Ames, Marylou LoFrese and Delight Allen. Appreciation goes to many other members who assisted in giving out name tags and making sure everyone felt welcomed.
