Volume 2, No. 7 February 2014 FACULTY ADVISORY COMMITTEE The Faculty Advisory Committee for Elementary and Secondary Schools will meet on February 4, 2014, from 2:00pm to 3:00pm in the Library at Morris Catholic High School in Denville. NEW PRINCIPAL PROGRAM On Wednesday, February 5, 2014, new principals will meet for the third quarterly inservice program. The meeting, which will start at 9:00am and conclude by 11:30am, will be held at the Diocesan Pastoral Center in Clifton. MEETING OF PASSAIC CONSORTIUM Pastors and Principals of schools in the Passaic Consortium (St. Brendan School, St. Philip the Apostle School, Blessed Sacrament School, St. Gerard Majella School, Academy of St. Francis of Assisi) will meet on February 5, 2014, at 1:00pm, in the Diocesan Pastoral Center in Clifton. The meeting will conclude by 3:00pm. STEM MEETING A STEM Professional Day for Cohorts I and II will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2014, at the John Paul II Center from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Breakfast will be available at 8:30am and lunch will also be provided. The program, geared toward principals and 3rd through 5th grade teachers, will be facilitated by Stevens Institute of Technology (CIESE). Confirm attendance by February 4 th to [email protected] . SECONDARY SCHOOL PRESIDENTS There will be a meeting for secondary school presidents on February 6, 2014, at DePaul Catholic High School. The meeting will run from Noon to 2:00pm. Submit agenda items to Br. William by February 4 th . FEBRUARY PRINCIPALS MEETING All elementary and secondary principals as well as teacher leaders (1 or 2 per school) will meet on Wednesday, February 12, 2014, at the Carnevale Center, St. Mary’s, 25 Pompton Ave., Pompton Lakes, NJ. Participants are invited to participate in the 8:30am student Mass in the Church. Refreshments will be available at 8:30am. The program, including lunch, will run from 9:15am to 3:00 pm, and be on “The Common Core in Mathematics and English/Language Arts.” The presenter will be Dr. Paul Beaudin of Iona College. Each principal is asked to RSVP the number attending by February 7 th to [email protected] . EVALUATION COMMITTEE MEETING The Teacher Evaluation Committee will meet on February 13, 2014, at 7:30 am at the Molloy Center in Clifton. Participants are asked to review pertinent materials before the meeting and respond to Sr. Marisa DeRose, at [email protected] , about the results of their walk-through observations. PRAYERS Please continue to remember Sister Patricia Costello, O.P., principal of the Academy of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station, in your prayers. Her recovery is progressing. Sister Gloria O’Brian, SC has been appointed Acting Principal through June of 2014.

REPORT CARD MEETING There will be a meeting of the Third Grade Report Card Committee on Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at 2:00pm, in the Terrace Room at the Diocesan Center. SECONDARY SCHOOL PRINCIPALS MEETING There will be a meeting for secondary school principals on February 20, 2014, at Pope John XXIII High School. The meeting will begin at 11:00am and conclude by 1:00pm. Agenda items should be submitted to Br. William by February 17th.

INFORMATION FOR GROWTH Each school will administer the assessment to all full-time and part-time faculty at a faculty meeting during the week of February 3rd. Answer sheets for faculty are to be returned to the company by each school by the end of the school day on February 7th. Answer sheets for principals/presidents are to be returned to the Catholic Schools Office by the end of the school day on February 7th. Principals are reminded to forward any invoices they receive from Computerized Assessments and Learning to Dr. Marianne Conway via fax (973-779-0083) or email, [email protected].

ACRE TESTING ACRE tests are to be administered during the week of February 10–14, to students in the 5th, 8th, and 11th grades. This year, each school was to order the tests directly from NCEA. Information can be found on the NCEA website, www.ncea.org or by phone at (800) 711-6232.

AdvancED COMMITTEE MEETING The AdvancED Committee will meet from 10:00am to Noon on February 28, 2014, at the Diocesan Center in Clifton. The meeting will focus on a consideration of the interim report which will be sent to committee members for review before the meeting.

NCEA The Annual Convention of the National Catholic Educational Association will be held in Pittsburgh, PA, from April 22-24, 2014. Registration and Housing for NCEA 2014 are now open: http://www.ncea.org/convention. ACTION ALERT The New Jersey Catholic Conference and the NJ Network of Catholic School Families is asking for support for increases in nonpublic school aid in the State Budget for Nursing Services, Technology, and Initial Examination and Classification for Students with Learning Difficulties. Email or call the office of the Governor to ask that he include increases in the nonpublic school accounts in his Fiscal Year 2015 Education Budget to be announced in February. TEACHER APPLICATION PROCESS Effective for all teacher hires for the 2014-2015 school year, any person seeking a teaching position in the Catholic schools of the Diocese of Paterson must file an application with the Catholic Schools Office. The application materials and the directions are available on the Diocesan website. Click here to access them. Names of applicants whose files are complete and the position sought will be listed and e-mailed to principals periodically, and copies of applicant files will be made available to principals upon their request. Principals are also reminded to notify the Catholic Schools Office of openings as they occur so these can be listed on the Diocesan Website. The Diocese will advertise generally in various media about expected teacher openings. Any school that wishes to advertise its own teacher openings is to contact the Catholic Schools Office before doing so. Address any questions to Dr. Marianne Conway.

E-RATE The 2014-2015 E-Rate Application Filing window dates have been established. All schools should have already filed a Form 470 for the 2014-2015 funding year. If you have not filed a Form 470 as of yet, please complete this form now. Schools have until February 26, 2014 to file a Form 470. After posting Form 470, schools must wait the mandatory minimum 28-day waiting period before filing a Form 471. The Application Filing window for Form 471 and Item 21 attachments OPENS as of 12 noon on Thursday, January 9, 2014 and CLOSES at 11:59pm on Wednesday, March 26, 2014. Both forms must be filed before the application window closes. Remember that all the required forms can be filed online or by using paper forms. If a school chooses to submit the paper forms, allow extra time to accommodate mailing delays. File E-Rate forms online at: http://www.sl.universalservice.org/menu.asp. NOTE: Item 21 attachments to the FCC Form 471 must be submitted by the close of the filing window. If a school files the Item 21 attachment online, be sure to click on the "Submit" button at the bottom of the last page before the window closes, OTHERWISE YOUR ONLINE ITEM 21 ATTACHMENT WILL NOT BE SUBMITTED. FY 2014 IDEA/NCLB GRANTS There has been a realignment of the project period for IDEA/NCLB Grant monies. Any carryover funds brought into the FY 2014 grant year must be encumbered and expended by June 30, 2014, the end of the FY 2014 grant year. All FY 2013 IDEA and NCLB carryover fund amounts not fully expended by June 30, 2014, will not be available for use in the FY 2015 IDEA and NCLB grant years. Any summer activities taking place in July and August 2014, will occur at the beginning of the FY 2015 IDEA/NCLB project periods. NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE CAMP Applications for the 2014 National Youth Science Camp are available at http://apply.nysc.org. The deadline is March 1, 2014. Two high school seniors will receive a full scholarship to exchange ideas with scientists and other professionals from the academic and corporate worlds. The selected delegates must demonstrate academic achievement in science, and show potential for thoughtful scientific leadership. Michael Heinz, New Jersey’s delegate selection coordinator, is available to answer questions about the NYSC or the application process at [email protected]. LEGISLATION: Purchasing Agreement: Governor Christie has signed a bill permitting nonpublic schools to participate in a joint purchasing agreement for the provision and performance of goods and services when two or more school districts enter into such an agreement. It is recommended principals contact the school district in which their school is located to determine whether a joint agreement exists.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest Act: This bill imposes various requirements designed to provide student-athletes, their parents or guardians, coaches and other school officials with information concerning the nature and symptoms of cardiac arrest. It also establishes protocols for the removal-from-play of student athletes who experience symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest while participating in athletic activities. Pamphlets, currently developed by the Commissioner of Education, are to be distributed and include a form to be signed by the student-athlete and his/her parent or guardian acknowledging receipt and review of the pamphlet. This Act also provides that a person who coaches a nonpublic school athletic activity must hold a current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation from the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or other training program recognized by the Department of Health. As more information becomes available regarding this Act, it will be distributed to schools.

NONPUBLIC ENROLLMENT REPORT The data collected in this report will be used to calculate both state and federal aid for nonpublic schools for nursing services, textbooks and technology for the 2014-2015 school year. The Office of Interdistrict Choice and Nonpublic Schools has just reopened the Report, and it will remain open until February 14, 2014. To check the status of your enrollment, go to http://homeroom3.state.nj.us/np_enroll/ . In order for your school’s enrollment information to be complete and considered valid by the NJDOE, the “SUBMIT” button must be clicked. If you have any questions, contact Greg Kocher, at [email protected]. FEE SCHEDULE To assist schools in budget preparation, a preliminary Fee Schedule for 2014-2015 can be accessed here. AMENDED CALENDAR The form to be used by schools to submit an amended calendar can be accessed here. Note that an amended calendar must be submitted by each school whether or not the school missed days. If no days were missed, simple indicate that on the amended calendar form. The amended calendar is due by April 30, 2014.
