February 2014 Dear Students and Parents, The purpose of this booklet is to provide information to graduating seniors about the local scholarships and awards available. The Table of Contents represents a diverse group of associations, organizations and scholarships. It is organized by category to reflect various groups of sponsors. We hope that this will make the process easier for applicants. Eligibility guidelines and application procedures are provided for each scholarship. Unless specifically otherwise indicated, applications are due by April 1, 2014. Application forms are available on NAVIANCE or in the Guidance Office. The DHS Scholarship Common Application (pages 57 & 58) is used for many of the scholarships, this makes the process more efficient for you and the guidance staff. However, there are several scholarships listed that require the use of the organization’s own application. The criteria for awarding scholarships and the selection process are determined by the organization or sponsor. The Guidance Department functions only as a conduit for this information. Please note, some applications must be mailed directly to the committees by the student. Instructions for Criteria and Application Procedure and deadlines must be closely followed or consideration may not be given to applications. The DHS Scholarship Application Cover Form on (page 55 & 56) must be completed and included with the applications that are submitted to the Guidance Office. The Guidance Office cannot be responsible for processing and tracking applications that are not listed on this cover form. Additional copies of this form are available in the Guidance Office. Please read the guidelines carefully and be respectful of application procedures and deadlines.

We wish you good luck in your endeavors!

Colleen began teaching at Danvers High School in September of 2012 and through her passion for teaching and making a real impact in her student’s lives, quickly earned a reputation as a passionate and popular teacher. The Thorpe Scholarship Willis E. and Helen L. (Woodfin) Thorpe Scholarship Fund The Thorpe Scholarship has been awarded to graduates of Danvers High School since 1967. More than 300 students have benefited from the generosity of this fund. Within the school community, it is regarded as a prestigious, coveted award. However, few know the history of the scholarship or the background of Mr. Thorpe. The following information was obtained from the Danvers Archival Center located at the Peabody Institute library. Introducing Mr. Thorpe ! Willis E. Thorpe grew up in Sabattus, Maine. After graduating from Bates College in 1911, he moved to Danvers to become the Assistant Principal of Danvers High School. At that time, the position was titled Submaster. Mr. Thorpe held that position for five (5) years. Perhaps, his loyalty and commitment to education, the town of Danvers and its schools grew from his experiences working with students, educators and parents. Mr. Thorpe left education to become associated with several tanneries in the area. He served as President of the Paris Tanning Company and Vice President of the Paris Leather Company. Both of these companies were located in Paris, Maine. Mr. Thorpe worked in the leather industry for 30 years. In 1944, Mr. Thorpe became the Director of the Danvers National Bank. Mr. Thorpe’s career advanced quickly. In 1948, he became Vice President; in 1950, he was named President of the Bank. During his life in Danvers, he was involved in a variety of civic and community organizations. From 1951-1953, he was a member of the Board of Selectman. Mr. Thorpe was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Danvers Industrial Commission and served as President of the Danvers Rotary Club. His activities included Chairmanship of the Community Fund in 1954 and active involvement in the Heart Association. Mr. Thorpe died in September 1963. The Thorpe Will! Mr. Thorpe expressed his respect and commitment to the community and residents of Danvers through his last Will and Testament. Six hundred thousand ($600,000) dollars was left to the Town of Danvers to establish a scholarship fund for Danvers High School graduates. The interest from this fund supports the annual awards. According to the Will, scholarships were to be awarded to “deserving” seniors who wished to pursue higher education. Students remain eligible to receive the award for four years of study if they maintain respectable grades in college. The Will designates that the Selection Committee be composed of the Superintendent to Schools, Chairman of the School Committee and Principal of Danvers High School. Fifty thousand ($50,000) dollars was bequeathed to the town to support health service. The interest from this fund has been used to maintain Hunt Hospital. His philanthropic endeavors also included the Danvers YMCA and the Danvers Unitarian-Universalist Church.

The Thorpe Scholarship! Throughout his life, Mr. Thorpe strived to accomplish. The essence of the criteria used to select recipients of the scholarship named in his memory reflects the qualities he tried to portray in his life experiences: achievement, commitment, concern and respect for others. The Committee will also consider financial needs. Application for the Thorpe Scholarship requires completion of the Common Application Form, transcript, letters of recommendation and activity profile.

The application packet should be returned to the Guidance Office by April 1st.
