Page 15 VOLUME 42 ISSUE 5 Plans & Specs On January 25 th the Lansing Chapter sponsored a Block Kids event with the Stockbridge Heritage Elementary School Explora- tory Academy (HEA). Approximately 80 students participated in the competition with prizes awarded to the top 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd place projects and three best of class winners. We were fortunate to have industry judges representing FHWA, MDOT, ABC, and several design professions. The Operating Engineers Local 324 was also on hand to provide students the experience of operating construction equipment with their new simulator and chances to operate toy cranes. In preparation for the event; Lansing Chap- ter member, Melanie Myers and her husband, Garry Myers, Chief Estimator at Clark Construction visited the HEA students on January 18 th to discuss construction careers and give the students a Google Sketch-Up demonstration. The HEA is a program concentrating on the STEM model and is comprised of one 3 rd grade, 4 th grade and fifth grade class. The students are learning ‘outside the box’ with vocational skills being infused in their normal academics while introducing stu- dents to careers in the areas of science, technology, engineering and manufacturing. The Thursday evening set-up crew included Melanie Myers, Irene Daniels, Ruth Essenberg, Megan Jacobs, Becky Przedwojewski, and Mr. Travis Sparks—3rd Grade Teacher. The work areas were prepared at the student’s desk.

On Friday morning, the students gathered in the school cafeteria prior to the start of the Block Kids event so the work areas would not be dis-turbed prior to starting the event.

The classroom was an ideal location for the Block Kids Building Program. The teachers, Mr. Sparks, Mr. Nichols, and Mr. Trosin were pre-sent and kept control in the classroom.

Friday Workers included: Mary Finch and Traci Brower (above), Melanie Myers, Pat Collins, Barbara Strachan, Jane Smith, and Jay Finch. . We are fortunate that Judy Brune, Support Specialist; Jim Kelly, Principal, and teachers Travis Sparks, Steve Trosin, and Josh Nichols; and a few parents were there to keep everything running smoothly. The Operating Engineers Local 324 Training & Education Center provided a simulator that was a big hit as scores were tallied. The cranes provided by Melanie Myers were also a lot of fun for the children.

Willie Dubas and John Hartwell, Apprentices at Operating Engineers Local 324 Training and Education Center, demonstrated and supervised the simulator operation.
