FEBRUARY 2013: THREE KEY ACHIEVEMENTS AND THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE

INTERNATIONALISATION CHANGE PROGRAMME 2012-3

Three Key Achievements- One.

Raised interest in internationalising the curriculum in seven Departments and in the University’s centralised Professional and Organisational Development agency.

Three Key Achievements- One. Work with Physics Department’s learning and teaching team to see how best to integrate international students.Archaeology Board of Studies wants to set up training workshops for P/G studentsEnglish/History/History of Art has set up training workshops for its research students involved in teachingThe University’s Learning and Teaching Forum has set up a training workshops and the POD team has now included an IoC session in its programme for PhD students going on to teach and in its PGCAP programme for newly-appointed academics.

Three Key Achievements - Two

Piloted practical small-group work intensely in Law and in Social Policy and Social Work.:

using a set of preliminary exercises as well as ‘metacommunication’ tasks throughout the Autumn Term with both Departments, we have achieved a successful IoC outcome in the Law School and a partially successful one in SPSW.

Three Key Achievements- TwoSmall Group Work Initiative, 2012-13. Term 1 end-of-term survey Please address the following three questions. Address the questions as a group, assigning one or two members to take notes.   1. To what extent do you consider your current experience in the Law School at York to be international/ised? Considerably (on a scale of 1- 5 with 5 being the highest level, comments ranged from 4 – 4.5 to 6!) 2. Please give examples of what you consider to be international/ised experienced within your current York Law School experience. Improved my knowledge of other legal jurisdictions Learning how to research law from other countries Helped me to know more about my own legal system by contrasting it with othersImproved my language skillsCultural awareness – (eating food that I would not usually do) Learning generally about other countries

Three Key Achievements- ThreeWorked with the Law School towards assessment procedures which reflect the goals of IoC. We see this as a step towards providing the framework for creating new Programme Specifications and Module Documents.

Three Key Achievements- ThreeMARKING CRITERIA – PBL WORK ON WIKI AND BLOG

Overall contribution to the group’s learning experience (for example, supporting, critiquing and challenging the position that others have taken; or in other ways building on and/or developing the work of others)

Mark

The student always demonstrates a positive and constructive attitude in their manner of contributing to the group’s learning experience The reasons for the interventions and any agreement or disagreement with other students’ work are always relevant, properly evidenced and explained in a way that should be clear and understandable to all the other students in that groupAll interventions fully reflect the overall MLOs

Starred distinction (80%+)

The Biggest Challenge

Trying to move beyond piecemeal activity, personal enthusiasms and the precariousness of Department-specific interventions.

The Biggest Challenge

We are steering a way forward by using our Senior Manager on the team to help push further into the POD system and to embed internationalisation into Staff Development, rather than have it as an ‘add-on.
