Qdoba’s Welcome Back Party!Tuesday, January 15 was no ordinary day in the Bronco Student Center (BSC). During U-hour, crowds of Cal Poly Pomona students gathered for Qdoba Mexican Grill’s lively Welcome Back Party. The campus community was greeted with music from a live D.J., a raffl e, a photo booth, and giveaways, including Qdoba t-shirts, Frisbees, and hacky sacks.

Because Qdoba never had a grand opening when it fi rst launched in the fall, this was the perfect time to celebrate—students had just returned from Winter Break for a new year and new quarter.

A week before the Welcome Back Party, anybody who made a purchase at Qdoba was given a raffl e ticket. Over 2,000 tickets were distributed. On the day of the event, fi ve lucky participants won a gift basket fi lled with a variety of Qdoba-themed gear and a Bronco gift card. The ultimate grand prize was a mountain bike, which was given to Olivia Glynn, a fi rst-year music student.

In the midst of the event, a fl ash mob erupted in front of Qdoba to the popular song “Gangnam Style” by PSY. While the music echoed throughout the BSC, the student club Ry Guy performed a synchronized dance routine for the nearby crowd. Moreover, the energetic group pushed tables and chairs aside for a moment of breakdancing.

There was a lot to celebrate and enjoy during Qdoba’s Welcome Back Party. Qdoba not only offers delectable, customizable food options, but its presence is a campus anomaly; Cal Poly Pomona is one of only six campuses nationwide and the fi rst university in California to have a Qdoba, making this dining venue a truly unique option for the Cal Poly Pomona campus community.

Farewell Lisa! Hello David!

Lisa De La Cruz-Caldera, who was the Village’s Assistant Director for Residential Education and Community Standards, accepted a position as Assistant Dean/Community Standards at Stanford University. Congratulations, Lisa!

Ken Fisher, Director of Housing Programs and Services, called her departure “bittersweet,” and stated that she has left a legacy of accomplishments and goodwill.

“We of course, wish her well in her new role and appreciate her for her intelligence, balanced approach toward problem solving, kindness, and commitment to the ongoing improvement in the quality of residential life on our campus,” expressed Ken.

With every change such as this, an opportunity opens for another professional; David Laxamana, who was Residential Education Specialist for Living/Learning Programs and Professional Staff Development, has been appointed to Assistant Director for Residential Education and Community Standards. David’s job description is exactly the same as when Lisa was in this role,

and will grow as the housing program also grows. He offi cially assumed his new position on Monday, January 7, 2013.

“I’m excited that Dave has chosen to accept his new position and associated challenges,” voiced Ken.

David holds a Master in education from the University of Vermont and has considerable experience both within higher education and business. He has a strong and well-developed understanding of student and community development in a residential college environment and a commitment to student advocacy and learning through the practice of restorative justice, challenge, and support.

“Dave is a great guy—much admired by the staff and student communities,” said Ken.

David will be marrying his fi ancé Liz this coming May and will be another staff-family living within the University Village.

Congratulations to both Lisa and David on their new professional opportunities!

As we say goodbye to one Village employee, we welcome another to a new position

Randall Townsend, who was recently promoted to Foundation Director of Information Technology, has successfully re-certifi ed through the PMI governing body as a Project Management Professional.

The Project Management Professional Certifi cate (PMP) is a globally recognized credential representing a highly experienced group of 300,000 project management practitioners worldwide. Initial certifi cation requires a minimum of 3 years project management experience, a bachelor’s degree, 35 hours of specialized training, and successful completion of a 4 hour 200 question exam. Maintaining the credential requires an additional 60 hours of continuing education every three years. Standards for the certifi cate are rigidly maintained by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

PMP certifi cation provides the organization with project managers who have learned state-of-the-art global project management practices. The certifi cation shows competence and discipline in understanding and using internationally proven project standards, processes and terminology. This in turn provides managers the ability to initiate, execute and close projects with a much higher likelihood of success.

Certifi cation requires excellence in communication and human resource management skills which capitalizes on diverse team expertise and collaborative efforts. PMP credential holders must adhere to a strict code of ethics and professional conduct demonstrating reliability and project team integrity. Certifi cation and ongoing professional development activities help credentialed managers maintain a competitive edge while providing the organization repeatable project success, higher retention of professional staff and long term excellence in the workforce.

Randall has maintained continuous PMP certifi cation since 2003.

Congratulations, Randy!

The Social Bowls cialageBy: Lily Ly & Darren Isomoto

Every year, we anticipate the Super Bowl to see which company or brand will score big with their multimillion-dollar advertisement. Snickers’ 30-second bit revived Betty White’s career a few years back and of course, who can forget Volkswagen’s Darth Vader spot? Adorable.

This year, however, we’ve already been exposed to teasers broadcasted on regular programming along with full commercials on YouTube, and the coin for Super Bowl XLVII hasn’t even been tossed yet!Instead of showcasing their costly advertisement during the big game alone, companies are now strategically uploading their ad on YouTube within weeks leading up to gameday.Smart play? Yes!

Consumer viewership behavior has drifted dramatically within the past few years and users are statistically proven to respond more effectively when engaged through social media platforms. Let’s face it—even if we stuck around during commercial break, we were probably swiping away on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram anyway.

With viewers commenting, liking, or sharing the video, the company or brand has gained much more exposure by not being bound to a single time slot on television. The best thing that companies are doing is embracing the power of social media and getting more bang for their buck by getting people to talk (and tweet) about their commercial weeks before, during, and long after the big game.

A multitude of things have been happening at the University Village, and continue to happen to make the Village an ever-growing establishment for the

University and residents alike. This snippet will inform and update the community about activities and changes at the Village, all in the pursuit of continual growth and support of both our residents and staff. Within our staff, we said farewell to the beautiful Lisa De La Cruz-Caldera, Assistant Director for Residential Education and Community Standards, who has now embarked on a new adventure at Stanford University, as their Assistant Dean of Residential Education. We welcomed Dave Laxamana, who was the Resident Educational Specialist for Phase 1, into Lisa’s previous position and, Geovanna Rojas, our Graduate Assistant for Residential Education, into Dave’s previous position. Geovanna is now the Complex Coordinator for Phase 1. We also congratulated Davinah Simmons, our previous Community Development Specialist, as she’s started a new journey at Northwestern University in Chicago to pursue her next life-changing experience as one of their Area Coordinators! Although we will miss them as our Village staff, like family, we couldn’t be more proud. We hope that they fl awlessly transition into their newly accepted positions, and continue to develop and touch the lives of students as they have done here.

Kicking off this winter quarter, Fatima Adam, our newly appointed Community and Student Life Advocate (CSLA) has her weekly Monday coffee nights at 6:30 p.m. in the SPOT (Study Place Over There) located in the Community Center. Stop by for some caffeine and good community building from our very own CSLA and other residents for a few hours! The Monday night coffees are a great way to talk to Fatima about any ideas you may want to see happen in the Village! We also have Chris Lim, one of our Resident Advisors (RA) who has a weekly running group every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning at 8 a.m. They go over techniques, stretches, and jog close routes around our beautiful campus. If you are interested in either Monday night coffee or morning runs, you can always get more information by asking any RA, hitting us up on the University Village Facebook, or going into the main offi ce. We are always willing to help and want to answer any questions if it means you are willing to get involved! We have three big events this quarter! On Friday, January 25 at 8 p.m., we hosted an exciting Games Night—an enjoyable event for people who like to play games or for those who just want to socialize. There were many popular games including Apples to Apples, Catan, Taboo, Phase 10, Magic the Gathering, and a Ping-Pong and pool tournament. Next, we will host our Speed Friending/Dating Night on Wednesday, February 13

starting at 8 p.m. This event is a great way to make connections and get to know other residents and neighbors that live within the Village community. It will be a fun, speedy, and social frenzy, so come join! Lastly, we have our annual Swap Eat on Thursday, February 21, starting at 5:30 p.m. The Village has put on this annual event the past four years and it is clearly here to stay. This event features foods from different cultures, so come out and bring a dish from your homeland to share with our community. It’s a nice time to talk over some enchiladas or eggrolls. It should be a cultural fusion of foods. Just talking about the events gets us excited. These types of experiences within a community can make any college experience more impactful, so come on out! Speaking of community involvement, the University Village has developed a Community Watch at the Village! It is comprised of residents and is beginning to take shape. It is a daily event, which has been started to help the residents take ownership of the Village and help residents get to know each other on a whole other level. What

is starting out as a basic level of neighborhood watch will eventually turn into a weekly BBQ, hot chocolate, dance party, and celebration of this great community we have here at the Village that has yet to be impacted; but once it’s been created, it will develop into a festival of pride and community of support. This is what we hope for our residents, and will create for them. There also many things happening on our campus that our residents are involved in. Come and check out our Village family at our home basketball games, intramural teams for volleyball and soccer, the Vagina Monologues, and events for Black History month. There are also several musical instrument performances and ASI/B.E.A.T. events weekly. For more information for campus help activities, check out our campus website or hit up the department director for more information. Well, that’s all for now. Hope you all have an awesome month, fellow Village people! See you around. Let’s make a difference.
