Pennies For Patients

BY UMA SARWADNYA

Never underestimate the power of the penny. Millions dollars in pennies (as well as other spare change) have been raised by schools through Pennies for Patients. This program supports the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society whose goal is to not only make a difference in the lives of the patients suffering from blood cancers but to raise awareness for these diseases. Programs like Pennies for Patients demonstrate the power of students like us to make a positive difference. The funds schools raise are devoted to research, patient and community service, public health education as well as professional education. Our very own Key Club is making an effort to contribute to this cause. So get involved and do some coin-collecting!

Kiwanis is a huge international organization made up of many different clubs, and Key Club is just the high school branch of it. Kiwanis extends to all groups of people, including elementary school and college students as well as adults. Kiwanis One Day is a day every year where all Kiwanis members find a way to help their own communities wherever help is needed. Kiwanians all over the world make a difference in their communities on Kiwanis One Day. It is a great way for young people to learn the power of service and to experience the

great feeling we get from volunteering Clubs participating in Kiwanis

One Day can also enter a contest on the Kiwanis International website, and the club with the most special project will be able to have it professionally videotaped and promoted wherever they want it to be. Millburn Key Club hasn’t participated in Kiwanis One Day in years past, but it could be a possibility for the future. This year, Kiwanis One Day is April 6th. What do you think we should do for Kiwanis One Day?

again, just for people like her. Many others of those we helped graciously expressed their gratitude as they left, and I seemed to understand that it certainly was not easy for them to live a comfortable life, and so our efforts to help them meant a lot. At first I was a little hesitant when I served the food to some people who did not seem so inviting, but by the end of the task, I realized that they also possessed extreme gratitude on the inside, even though they did not express it themselves.

We all felt contented afterwards from volunteering at the Soup Kitchen, and I was also extremely happy to find that many other outside community members took time out of their schedule to do this. I believe that it is only with the dedication and compassion of the volunteers that a difference can be made in the lives of the needy at the Soup Kitchen, and I am very glad that many Key Clubbers were part of this remarkable endeavor.

Visiting the Soup Kitchen

Over the winter break, many Key Clubbers and I had the opportunity to serve lunch at the Morristown Soup Kitchen. We got to know many of the other volunteers, and we were each in charge of one food item to hand to the people in line. In total, we helped over 200 people. It was a wonderful and eye-opening experience because it was the first time in my life that I helped the needy members of the community so directly. I never believed that the area had many poor and even homeless people but I was totally wrong. By noon, the room filled with people, the tables were packed, and the servers had to work very quickly.

The most significant accomplishment for me was seeing the satisfaction on each person’s face and being able to feel that the Key Club touched the lives of many, albeit the small impact it seems we played. In fact, I could tell that even the sad and quiet people we served appreciated our efforts because I could see a change in their facial expressions that seemed to light up as our eyes and hands touched. The memory of an old woman in red, who wheeled around a cart remains in my mind today. She was probably homeless and as she left, she thanked us so heartedly that I felt that I would come back and do it all over

Dear Key Clubbers,

As the service year comes to a close, I look back and am amazed to see what we have accomplished in our community and all over the world during the last 12 months. For one, we have eliminated maternal/neonatal tetanus in many countries with the ELIMINATE project. We, the officers, could not have asked for a better group of more devoted Key Clubbers this year! All of our members have not only exceeded our expectations by generously participating in various events, but have also introduced our club to new and fantastic ideas.

Without you as our members, we would not have been able to be one of the most amazing clubs in the school. This was an incredibly successful service year and I look forward to more in the future. I hope to see some of you guys on the Officer Board next year!

Yours in Caring and Service, Lyndsay Wittenberg

Key Club Corresponding Secretary 2012-2013

Dear Key Clubbers, This past service year, being Editor of our Key Club, has opened my eyes to the breadth and depth of service that we can do in our community. Not only do members of our club never fail to surprise me with their dedication and interest, but the collective Key Club member mentality is purely inspiring. When I came into this position, I was afraid that finding writers for the newsletter would be difficult and that being an officer as a Junior would be challenging. But I have found that there are always people out there that I can depend upon. To me, our Key Club is not only about fun and friendship, but it is a community of kind, conscientious human beings who truly care about each other. The service we do reflects our own character and makes us better people. I hope that next year is as successful as this year was – maybe even more! Get excited about the 2013-2014 service year!

March Madness! Dear Fellow Key Clubbers,

March is definitely going to be the most exciting month of this service year! Seeing as it is our last full month before District Convention, we have a lot of fun events coming up.

Now, you may have been hearing a lot about District Convention, DCON for short. It is a very fun event where all the Key Clubs around New Jersey go to and participate in. These clubs, including ours, receive awards for all the projects done throughout the service year. Not only does this event mark the end of this service year, but it also marks the beginning of the new one! At DCON, we elect our new District Board. It is a lot of fun, and I highly recommend attending. This month, we will be doing a lot to prepare for this amazing event. For starters, we will be working on our contests. So this includes the scrapbook, club video, and posters!

We will also be collecting money for Eliminate. As you may already know, we have our fundraisers that are still going on. They include selling bracelets and hand cut-outs. If you would like to participate, it’s not too late!

And lastly, we will be trying to rebuild our Kiwanis Club. Please make sure to tell your parents to come to the meeting! As Mr. Cooperman said, it is “the single most important event all year!”

I cannot wait to see you all at these upcoming events and raising money for Eliminate!

Yours in Caring and Service, Karen Fich
