Editorial Note
Happy New Year to all our readers!
NEW Year is the time at which a new calendar year begins and the calendar's year count is incremented. In many cultures, the event is celebrated in some manner. The New Year of the Gregorian calendar, today in worldwide use, falls on 1 January, as was the case with the Roman calendar. There are numerous calendars that remain in regional use that calculate the New Year differently.
The order of months in the Roman calendar was January to December since King Numa Pompilius in about 700 BC, according to Plutarch and Macrobius. It was only relatively recently that 1 January again became the first day of the year in Western culture. Until 1751 in England and Wales (and all British dominions) the new year started on 25 March – Lady Day, one of the four quarter days (the change to 1 January took place in 1600 in Scotland). Since then, 1 January has been the first day of the year. During the Middle Ages several other days were variously taken as the beginning of the calendar year (1 March, 25
March, Easter, 1 September, 25 December). In many countries, such as the Czech Republic, Italy, Spain and the UK, 1 January is a national holiday.
With the expansion of Western culture to many other places in the world during recent centuries, the Gregorian calendar has been adopted by many other countries as the official calendar, and the 1 January date of New Year has become global, even in countries with their own New Year celebrations on other days (such as Israel, China and India). In the culture of Latin America there are a variety of traditions and superstitions surrounding these dates as omens for the coming year.

From the President’s Desk!
Dear Probians
OUR Christmas lunch at Capri proved most interesting on an extremely warm day, especially when the power was cut off by contractors next door which took out the air-conditioning system. We were all very relieved
when power was restored and we were able to have a lovely afternoon of dancing and entertainment. Thank you again to Rosie, Cathy and Lesley for assisting me with this function.
Our 2013 activities have commenced with a Breakfast at Four Points where 33 members got together for a good catch-up. Everyone appeared to have survived Christmas and the New Year and look forward to another exciting year ahead. We still have several committee positions to be filled; Vice-President, Assistant Secretary, Trips & Tours, Show & Tell and Lunches so for those members who have joined us in the last 3 – 5 years or more, please consider where you can assist YOUR Club. It is part of your membership that you take an active role on committee, not just leave it to others. Please remember there are committee members there to assist you in your role. It is not a difficult task that is asked of you.
We need to have completed nomination forms lodged with The Secretary by 5.00pm on Tuesday 19 February 2013 prior to our February meeting. Please contact me on 5282-3663 or Brian Harris 5282-2425 to discuss further.
In this Newsletter, you will find a copy of our 2012 Annual General Meeting for your perusal.
As mentioned in a previous Newsletter, we were to induct 3 new members at our February meeting but unfortunately they will not be available at this time so we will postpone them until March.
I look forward to seeing you at our February meeting where we will have as our Guest Speaker, Carolyn Creed from Fresh Food Markets with heaps of food for us to sample.
I hope we will all have a very active 2013 filled with plenty of “Fun, Friendship and Fellowship” as we enjoy a variety of activities within our club. President Val

Thu 9 May 7:30pm Start, GPAC
Thu 9 May 7:30pm Start THE King and I is a stage musical, the fifth by the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. The work is based on the 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon
and derives from the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, who became governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. The story deals with the experiences of the British schoolteacher, who is hired as part of the King's drive to modernize his country. The relationship between the King and Anna is marked by conflict through much of the play, as well as by a love that neither is able to express. The musical premiered on 29 March 1951 at Broadway's St. James Theatre, closed on 20 March 1954 and has received tours and revivals.
MEMBERS to make their own way to GPAC for a 7:30pm start. Tickets: $33:00 per person.
