NEWS AND COMMENT

SOCIAL EVENINGWe were a bit disappointed with the turnout after all Ian’s efforts butthe event was supported by over 20 who enjoyed a meal and a quiz.We didn’t find the grub as good as the previous year but thought thequizmaster performed with aplomb – improving with practice obvious-ly! If any of you have any venues or views on social events for nextautumn/winter we’d like to hear about it. Prize for the quiz went toAnita and John Y, it was a bottle of port which Anita is very partial to!

IF YOU GET INJUREDReport it, we now have to make a declaration after each event statingthere were no injuries. That makes it even easier for AMCA to pay outnothing!

CASH FLOWSee in trials report, we really do appreciate riders who come with theright cash after the prices rose, which caused problems in Feb due toorganisers’ lack of attention.

THE LAND YOU SUPPORTThe sites where HR run trials have had a transfer of ownership.Previously run as a not for profit organization – Active Woodland it isnow Horsham Active Woodland Charitable Trust (HAWT) – a regis-tered charity with 6 trustees and it’s own website. All land fees HRpay for site use go toward restoring and maintenance of the siteswhich we hope will be improved by the work.

A WALK IN THE WOODS Mannings Heath, 3rd Feb2013Comparisons may be odious but 2 events at Mannings Heath a monthapart asked for it. In December the Jimmies team went international

– ½ way scores W 86, B91, Y93 then came the Duggies with ½ waysof W21, B17 and Y 19 (remember our target is 40).Post event comments on the latter ranged from “just right” to “it’s thefirst one I’ve finished!” Only one peeved visitor said blues were tooeasy, suggesting he went up to whites, led to his reply “I didn’t reallylike the look of them!” But well done the Duggies team Pete B, Benge,Jesse, Gordon and Kieran, 3 of them entered. Pete finished higher upthe score list than that to which he is accustomed, Kieran was just

Page 3: February 2013 Horsham Riders News

pleased to enjoy the event and finish; but Jesse entered white toprovide evidence of lack of practice!

A significant cash flow problem at the signing on when hobbit facearrived without any change – abandon all hope all ye who enter thisclubhouse without the right money – it worked – all early entriesfound it somewhere and John P offered his credit card. Benge madea serious complaint about the HR press wrongly accusing him ofowning a vast cannabis factory – we apologized for the misunder-standing when nourishment should have been ecstasy! (this is inDick’s mind and bears no resemblance to reality – as usual!) And …having picked up a key from Ian marked Mannings Heath, the teamwent to Northlands to mark out! Harry R had been preparing his bikefor a week or two but it refused to come alive via the kick starter soit got a bad tempered kick and was left at home. Adrian had ahanging ceremony as he put up the new team list for 2013 – there area few spots still need filling, please phone if you’re not on the list. Theteam system works well and we thank Adrian for all he does to makeit so.

Gary M, we hadn’t seen for a while and nor his bike and it obviouslydidn’t like the year old petrol – someone said the stuff the put in itdissolved the rubber tip on the float needle, whatever, Gary had toretire after a few sections. Old Horsham ACU Club paid us a visit and4 riders appeared as Ian had arranged the occasion, some wereunrecognizable after many years, it wasn’t only me, when Gerald Bwent in the caravan and said hello to Fiona she didn’t either. Theyare keen for HR to use one of their sites and will discuss arrangementswith Ian, but separate ACU/AMCA paperwork didn’t seem sensible,we’ll see. Nigel B was seen spinning his Freelander trying to get upthe slope to park, he gave up and stayed down, reminded he wastowed out at Northlands he revealed this was Elaine’s car and itwouldn’t pull the 3 bike trailer either.

As for the trial, unable to walk round, I regret not putting riders off bystanding nearby, so can only comment on the results where theYellows gave the most impressive progressive marks from 0 – 57. Itis quite amazing there was only 1 set of ties in 21 riders, is this dueto very honest scoring when the sections are easy?

Gary S only dropped 2 to come second, all this towing out has givenhim grip awareness in the last 12 months. And John P leveled John Yas a dreaded 5 took him down, he collected a new front tyre at the

Page 4: February 2013 Horsham Riders News

start so it won’t happen again. Mick D was extremely pleased with his11 and delighted when told of John’s 5, thought he might be aheadbut Adrian on 8 spoilt his pleasure. Chris H added his score, only 17,he says as he drops his cards in the box, and John P wanted witnessthat he had put 2 cards in – last time he got dnf as a second card wasnot found – stupid hobbit probably left it in the box he said!

The blue route saw old Horsham ACU man in top place but Tom Hwasn’t far off and not much difference between Phil TW, Michael H andGraham K. The surprise though was Tim at the bottom end, he had2 silly 5’s hurrying around as they started to clear up. The Whites ledby Andy D ahead of Frank B, Andy is a recent member, talking to meafter he wondered if he was ahead of Frank who thrashed him at thelast event. I said I would like to know how Andy D did, he said –that’s me! Ah well, I’ll know him now. Mick R leader of the Jimmiesteam and marker out of internationals couldn’t handle this easy stuff

and came 3rd. One point that applies, especially to our visitors, pleaseprint name clearly – we had Frank Bradshaw at the last trial, this timewe discussed the written name, was it Bresel or Balsots, in the endwe put Brady?!

So thanks to the Duggies for this pleasant day so enjoyed, everyoneflew round and we got finished by 2.30 pm. I end the report with‘Thought for the Day’

When sections hard and marks a legionSome don’t see a gate that’s missedAnd keep their scores in reasonBut when marks are low and riders pleasedScores correct, they do not needTo see the sections easedAnd experts ride in trepidationTheir concentration keeps aliveFearing they might drop a five

Get well soon: Clint - who broke a collar bone at the recentNormandale Traditional series trial. A blocked front wheel sent himover the Honda’s bars and straight to casualty.

Help: The March setting out team is a bit short on numbers - cananyone help on the 2nd March? If so contact Sean Parsons.
