From 1992-1995, I lived in Prague. I moved to Czechoslovakia in late August and by January 1 I lived in a brand new country, the Czech Republic. This kind of seismic change became an everyday occurrence. That summer the currency changed over. My Czech best friend went from being a penny pinching kindergarten teacher to an editor at the Czech language Elle magazine in a six month burst of networking and long hours. At the same time her garage band boyfriend became a multi-millionaire on the brand new Czech stock market. As Czech novelist Joachim Topol says in his magnificent City Sister

Silver, in 1989, behind the former Iron Curtain, "time exploded."

The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls captures the fun, danger, excitement, and wild pace of change I observed. I loved the play, but then, of course I would. What is amazing about working at the Alliance Theatre is that my colleagues, well traveled but of course without ties to the "Wild East," loved The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls too.

Working on this play makes me realize how fearless our audience has become about new work. You, our audience, are part of rapidly changing Atlanta culture. You trust us to present a good night in the theatre, and to help you venture into new worlds through new voices. The Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwright competition delights me every year, but this year, has been a highlight as I've worked with Meg — not only a great writer but a fantastic person and true collaborator — and traveled to Moscow through her eyes.

I hope you are as thrilled as I am with this exciting fairytale of a play.

Breaking into the theatre business can be a long, tough slog, particularly for young playwrights.

But Meg Miroshnik, who got her MFA from the Yale School of Drama, took one heck of a shortcut by winning the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition. The annual national competition is designed to help student playwrights become professionals, with the Alliance giving the

winner a professional production of his/her work. We recently caught up with Miroshnik to talk about her Alliance/Kendeda-winning play, The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls, and how the competition has impacted her career.

What was the inspiration behind The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls?It came from the opportunity I got to go to Moscow, study Russian and work as a freelance writer. I was struck by how quickly everything was changing there. The life expectancy for Russian men was 57 years, so there were many more women. I saw these iconic images — teenage girls standing in the snow and old women with headscarves at the market — and I was interested in colliding this world of women with both the present and past. I hit upon the idea of trapping them in the predicaments of old Russian folk tales.How does that relate to Annie, the show’s central character?

There was a whole generation of people who left the Soviet Union as children who came back to seek opportunities in Russia as the market was taking off. Annie’s a realistic, optimistic American who’s in this crazy situation — living with this woman who may be a witch, living across the hall from a girl who claims her boyfriend is turning into a bear. She can be the audience’s skeptical way into this world.

Your play won the Alliance/Kendeda competition. What’s the importance of those types of opportunities for playwrights?The program is remarkable in a number of ways. The Alliance is producing plays by early career playwrights in a major

regional theatre. It is a crazy, wonderful opportunity to be able to work there so early in my career. Even when one is lucky enough to find a home for a play, there is usually a long process of auditioning the play and figuring out if it will be right for the season. As part of the program, they partnered with a playwrights’ workshop at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., this

summer and then also with the Lark Play Development Center in New York in November, so I’ve been able to work with actors on the play twice and had time to rewrite and try new things out months before getting into a rehearsal room at the Alliance. It was a remarkable commitment that they made to the play, and it’s a phenomenal program. I feel incredibly lucky to have been a part of it.

жили были. Or zhili byli. In Russian, this means: “They lived, they were.” It’s the equivalent of “once upon a time,” a formulaic way to prepare the reader for a journey. So, жили были, in June 2011, I set out on a journey to Moscow to workshop The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls in Russian as part of an exchange between the Yale School of Drama and the Moscow Playwright and Director Center’s Masterskaya na Begavoi (curated by Marat Gatsalov).

When I arrive in Moscow, I meet the translator of the play, Maria Kroupnik, who has been poring over collections of fairy tales for weeks in search of lilting Russian rhymes. And for help selecting swear words of just the right potency, Kroupnik tells me, she has consulted the playwright Evgeny Kazachkov; together, they’ve carefully weighed the intended vividness and vulgarity of every curse the actors will utter.

Next, I meet the director, Ilya Shagalov, who has been tasked with creating an hour long eskiz, or “sketch” for production, using the play’s first 30 pages. This calculation comes as a surprise to me; in the U.S.,

one page generally equals one minute onstage. The discrepancy is explained when I arrive at the theatre and Shagalov introduces me to the musicians he’s hired (There are musical numbers in this play?!?) and then walks me through the space to inspect the props (I don’t remember mentioning Jell-O in the script…). My confusion and fear is soon transformed into excitement, however, as Shagalov and the incredible cast set to work. As

Russians raised on the tales at the center of the story, they play in the world with an ease that’s revelatory to my outsider’s eyes. I come away from the workshop with their generous insights and return home to reap my rewriting rewards.

Meg Miroshnik’s play The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls is the eighth winner

of the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition. This unique opportunity helps playwrights make the transition from America’s leading graduate playwriting programs to the professional theatre. Alumni and finalists have gone on to productions across the United States and the United Kingdom (and often return to Atlanta) and often return to Atlanta. Most recently, finalist Megan Gogerty (Love Jerry) performed her second one-woman show with Synchronicity Theatre. The Alliance is proud to provide a home to these artists during their first year in the “real world,” curating the next generation of great American playwrights.

How do you hope this show will affect audiences, and what do you want them to take away from it?The No. 1 thing for me about the play is that, since it is a fairy tale and we are literally beginning with “once upon a time,” I think there is an expectation as an audience member that it is going to be a really great story. So I hope people go away feeling like they have had a satisfying evening of storytelling, firstly. In terms of thematic or emotional reactions, I think

the play is asking what role fairy tales have in adult life. I hope that it will be funny, exciting, scary and provocative — a really fun evening in the theatre.

Arnold weissberger Award, and will be produced at the Moscow Playwright and Director Center in a Russian translation by Maria Kroupnik (directed by Ilya Shagalov). her work has been produced or developed by Alliance Theatre, South Coast Repertory’s Pacific Playwrights Festival, Perishable Theatre, the Kennedy Center, the Lark New Play Development Center, Yale Cabaret, and the Carlotta Festival at Yale. Upcoming projects include an adaptation of the libretto for Shostakovich’s Moscow, Cheryomushki for Chicago Opera Theater in April 2012 (directed by Mike Donahue) and a commission for a new play for South Coast Repertory. Meg holds an MFA in playwriting from the Yale School of Drama, where she studied under Paula Vogel.

ERIC ROSEN (Director) is artistic director of Kansas City Repertory Theatre, was founding artistic director of Chicago’s About Face Theatre (AFT) (1995-2008), and is a writer, director and producer. Collette received a Joseph Jefferson Award for her design of The Front Page at TimeLine Theatre, as well as a nomination for her design of Broadway Bound at Drury Lane Theatre. She received the Michael Merritt Maggio Emerging Designer Award in 2010. Collette is a full-time scenic design theatre lecturer at Columbia College Chicago and teaches adjunct at Northwestern University. Collette would like to thank Mark for his constant support!

CELISE KALKE (Director of New Projects) joined the staff of the Alliance in 2005. She is so proud of working on Alliance/Kendeda winners: Carapace, Tennis in Nablus, Smart Cookie, In the Red and Brown Water and False Creeds. Before moving to the Alliance she was Director of the Literary Department at the Public Theater in New York. At the Public she worked with many well-known actors including Jeffrey wright, Mos Def, Ben Stiller, Jimmy Smits, Peter Dinklage and Rosie Perez. She was featured in American Theatre as one of 25 American Theatre leaders of the future. Celise studied dramaturgy at the Prague Academy of Dramatic Arts (DAMU).

CLAY BENNING (Sound Designer) has been the resident sound designer at the Alliance Theatre for 12 years and has designed more than 70 productions. he is also an associate artist at Georgia Shakespeare with designs for more than 18 productions. Other work includes the Atlanta Ballet: The Great Gatsby, big (featuring Big Boi); Cincinnati Playhouse; Repertory Theatre of St. Louis; Theatrical Outfit; Synchronicity Theatre. Awards: 2006, 2007 and 2009 Suzi Bass awards for best sound design. he is a graduate of Presbyterian College (BA), North Carolina School of the Arts (MFA) and a member of IATSE/USA829.

JOSHUA HORVATH (Composer) is a Chicago-based sound designer, composer and music producer. his sound and music have been heard at Long wharf,Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Center Stage, hartford Stage, the Goodman, Steppenwolf, Chicago Shakespeare, The Court Theatre, Lookingglass, Kansas City Rep, Milwaukee Rep and Center Theatre Group. he is a four- time winner of Chicago's Joseph Jefferson award, an LA Ovation award winner, teaches sound design for theatre and film at Northwestern University, and is an artistic associate at Lookingglass Theatre.

R. LAMAR WILLIAMS (Production StageManager) is an Atlanta native. Rodney studied theatre at Florida A&M University’s Essential Theatre. his 10-year tenure at the Alliance has included stage managing Carapace, Sammy & Me, Tennis in Nablus, The Second Ciy: Peach Drop Stop & Roll , The Second City: Miracle on 1280 Peachtree Street and Broke; and assistant stage managing August Wilson Full Circle: Gem of the Ocean and Radio Golf; Doubt; Jelly’s Last Jam and the world premieres of Women of Brewster Place, Sister Act: The Musical and The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. For Sensei, JDawn, his girls and all humanity — “living life as ART!”

JODY FELDMAN (Associate Producer) has been the head of casting for the Alliance Theatre since 1991. She has cast more than 200 LORT B, D and TYA productions for the Alliance including a wide range of classical, contemporary and world premiere dramas and musicals. She has worked with such directors as Susan V. Booth, Kenny Leon, David h. Bell, Kent Gash, Doug hughes, Gary Griffin, Molly Smith and Andy Blankenbuehler. Since the Alliance is a center for new play development and productions, Jody has been privileged to cast a large number of new plays including The Last Night of Ballyhoo by Alfred Uhry, Flyin’ West and Blues for an Alabama Sky by Pearl Cleage, In the Red and Brown Water by Tarell Alvin McCraney, and world premiere musicals such as Aida, The Color Purple, Sister Act: The Musical, and Bring It On: The Musical. Jody also serves as casting director for Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company and worked as Atlanta casting director for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Tribute in washington, D.C., and the feature film Charming the Hearts of Men. Jody began her theatre career as an actress and then as assistant general manager at the Academy Theatre with Frank wittow. More than anything, Jody would like to thank you for being here to share the joy of live theatre with her Alliance Theatre family.

SUSAN V. BOOTH (Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2001. Over the past 10 seasons, she has initiated the Collision Project for teens, the Aliance/Kendeda National

Graduate Playwriting Competition, created local producing partnerships and overseen regional collaborative productions, as well as commercial partnerships on projects including The Color Purple; Bring It On: The Musical; The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring in Da’ Noise, Bring in Da’ Funk; and Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL, which she also directed. As a director, she has worked nationally at theatres including

the Goodman, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern Universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. She has held teaching positions at Northwestern and DePaul Universities, and serves as adjunct faculty with Emory University. She is the past president of the board of directors for Theatre Communications Group (the national service organization for the field), is on the artistic board of the Steinberg Charitable Trust in New York, and serves on the board of the Metro Atlanta Arts and Culture Coalition. Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre remains closely tied to the cultural identity of Atlanta, growing as the city has grown. in 1977, the Alliance merged with the Atlanta children’s Theatre (1929) to include Atlanta’s youngest audiences in fully produced theatrical experiences. in 1979, the Alliance created the Theatre School (now the Acting Program and Education Department) in order to strengthen the relationship with our community. in 2007, under the leadership of Susan Booth, Artistic Director, the Alliance received the regional Theatre Tony Award®.

The Alliance has created a large body of new work: world premiere musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent regional productions; the plays of early career playwrights through the Alliance/Kendeda National graduate Playwright competition; work on a nationally watched stage, launching and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community; and original plays for young audiences at every age level.

The Alliance takes great pride in our educational programming through the institute for Educators and Teaching Artists, community education including classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development. Twice recognized by the Federal Department of Education as leaders in the field of arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to arts access.

SynopsisWhen Annie Rabinovich, a 20-year-old college student who left the Soviet Union as a baby, decides to spend her summer break studying Russian in Moscow, she can’t begin to imagine the adventures awaiting her. I mean, sure, there are warnings: That odd scar on her mother, Olga’s, chest, for instance. But things get seriously dicey when Annie arrives in Russia: The girl across the hall, Masha, claims that her boyfriend has turned into a bear. And her new friend, Katya, has a sugar daddy she calls the tsar; he’s married to a wicked witch and Katya has started following his daughter, the Other Katya, around town. Plus, there’s Auntie Yaroslava — Annie’s not sure, but could this sweet old lady who looks 306 years old and never seems to leave the house actually be the girl-eating witch, Baba Yaga? Come to think of it, why does she keep cooking for Annie? It seems the longer Annie stays in the city, the blurrier the lines between reality and fantasy become. To secure her Russian happily ever after, must Annie take action soon? Or is it already too late?
