From the Rector I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination

and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial, and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word.

And, to make a right beginning of repentance, and as a mark of our mortal nature, let us now kneel before

the Lord, our maker and redeemer. (BCP p. 265)

On Ash Wednesday, February 22, we will once again hear this invitation that is extended to each of us for

the observance of a holy Lent. This invitation will be the theme of our Wednesday evenings in Lent.

When we gather in the chapel after our soup supper we will have an opportunity to reflect on some of

these components that make up a “holy Lent.” We will hear

scriptural and devotional readings on Repentance/Penitence,

on Fasting, on Prayer, on Almsgiving, and on

Forgiveness/Absolution. The question remains, nevertheless,

how each of us might mark this season in a way that is holy

and in a way that draws us into a closer relationship with God.

Lent is traditionally a time for giving some thing(s) up. The

temptation is to make Lent an opportunity for self-

improvement, rather than an opportunity for reflection and

repentance. Giving something up really only matters if it has

some hold on our lives. Lauren Winner is the author of the

books Girl Meets God and Mudhouse Sabbath. Winner grew

up with a Reform Jewish father and a lapsed Southern Baptist mother. As a student at Columbia

University in New York she converted to Orthodox Judaism. And then a few years later she converted to

Christianity and she became an Episcopalian. She writes, “The very first thing I liked about Christianity,

long before it ever occurred to me to go to church or say the creed or call myself a Christian, was the

Incarnation, the idea that God lowered himself and became a man so that we could relate to Him better.”

But it is her chapter on the observance of Lent that might prompt each of us to consider what we might

give up for Lent.

The church that Ms. Winner found to attend was All Angels (the same church Philip and I were a part of

when we were first married) on the upper west side of NYC. On the day after Ash Wednesday she and

her rector were having breakfast together when he asked her what discipline she had adopted for Lent.

She told him that she was going to fast every Friday, because it seemed so much more significant than

giving up chocolate or caffeine. The night before, in his Ash Wednesday sermon, the priest had

encouraged the congregation to consider giving up something that really mattered: “something you really

love. Something that is hard to do without.” At breakfast the next morning he said, “Lauren I want you to

give up something additional for Lent. I want you to give up reading….because reading may be the thing

you love most.” So she took up the challenge. During the first week, rather than reading on the subway,

she found herself watching people instead. And yes, during the course of Lent she cheated a time or two.

But what she discovered during that reading fast was that it left her starkly alone with her life and that she

spent more time praying. She discovered that at the end of the day, when she would ordinarily have

picked up a book to read, she prayed Compline instead. And once her reading fast was over, she

continued the habit, the discipline of praying Compline at the end of the day.

That brings us to the other question about a Lenten discipline – and that is what might we take on during

the season of Lent. Lauren Winner found herself taking on the spiritual discipline of prayer because what

she gave up gave something back: a time for, and a commitment to, prayer. On the Sunday before Lent,

Marie Peterek is going to share with us how transformative journaling was for her last year. Another

parishioner took on the discipline of writing a letter to someone she loved and cared for each day during

Lent. The point, however, is to prayerfully consider a Lenten discipline that will draw us closer to this

God who lowered himself, who became a man, who was tempted, who was crucified, and who rose again

so that we might have life in Him.

Vestry Highlights Meeting on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 the Vestry heard or discussed the following:

Mason Shea presented his proposal for his Eagle Scout project, which he hopes to complete prior to spring

break. His proposal is to build 6 planters to the left of the dumpsters, to edge the parking area. The vestry

approved the proposal.

Approximately 400 people attended Christmas Eve services.

The final amount pledged for 2012 was $433,873 (154 pledges).

We received a final check ($3106.95) from the Colleen Moore estate, bringing the total bequest to

$24,692.95.

Bill Kibler built a new lectern for the Parish Hall.

The parking lot was restriped the first week of January.

Greater Dallas roofing repaired 3 leaks on January 17: one in the kitchen, one in the Parish Hall, one in the

Rector’s office.

Jessica Harper, our youth minister, resigned in late December due to the demands of her full-time job.

Cathy Nelson and Susie Comer are working on scheduling activities during the interim.

There have been approximately 20 adult newcomers since the last Newcomers’ reception. Another is

scheduled for Sunday, February 19.

At the conclusion of 2011 our pledge payments were 101.58%; our overall contribution total was

100.34%; and we had a total of $25,948.41 income over expenses.

Websy Daisy will be doing the work on our new website the week of Jan. 23.

Lisa Martin mentioned two upcoming events: Sharing Faith dinner groups on April 26 and Education for

Ministry (EFM) class at St. Mark’s in the fall of 2012.

The Day School has received 3 bids for the installation of a monitored fire alarm system. The bids range in

price from $3,500 (rented equipment) to $14,000. All 3 bids have additional monthly monitoring costs.

Thanked the outgoing members of the vestry for their three years of service: Dru Cabler, Barbette Cooper,

Lisa Martin, Michael Meigs, and Andrea Michael.

Parishioner Priority

On Tuesday, February 21, join us in the Parish Hall for our Shrove Tuesday pancake supper at 6:00 p.m. We will be festooned in purple, gold, and green and draped in beads for our own celebration of Mardi Gras. We have our supply of 100% Canadian maple syrup, brought to us by Spider Miller before their move to Seattle in the fall. No need to cook that night – we will be serving pancakes, sausage, and the finest mixed fruit cups. There is nothing that beats breakfast for dinner, and we ours are so much tastier than IHOP! And less expensive too: $4 for adults; $2 for children 6-12; $1 for children under the age of 6; a family maximum of $12.

During the month of February St. Mark’s parishioners are invited to submit applications for the Day School for the 2012-2013 academic year. General registration will be open to all beginning in March. St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School is accredited with SAES (Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools). The school is open to children ages 2 through pre-kindergarten. Applications are available in the Parish Hall. For more information about the school contact Gina Newton at 444-9401.

Young Adults Group Informational Meeting Sunday, February 5 @ 10 a.m.

The time has finally come for the formation of a much needed, much-anticipated Young Adults Group at

St. Marks! There are many ideas regarding what this group should look like, ranging from a home bible

study, or group that plans outings together, to a more structured Sunday class. Come, let us get to know

one another, discuss our common interests and what we would like to get out of such a group.

I would like to propose that we meet Sunday, February 5th, at 10am. If the weather is nice, we can

meet at the trail-head of the meditation path. If it's too chilly that day, we can meet in one of St. Mark's

classrooms.

In the meantime, please begin thinking about topics (scripture, spirituality, theology, social ethics, etc.)

the group could cover or books we might explore, so that we can share these when we gather.

Community is an important part of what it means to be the Church—my hope is that, through this group,

we can all forge some new and meaningful relationships. I look forward to getting to know each of you.

Until then, peace and blessings.

Women of St. Mark's . . .

Congratulations to Jean Severn, the 2012 ECW Honored Women of the Diocese of Texas

for St. Mark’s.

Thank you to those who made the Women's Brunch so special...It was an afternoon of

bubbly, fantastic food, fun and fellowship.

On February 27 the Women of St. Mark's will gather in the Parish Hall at 6:30 to share a

potluck meal and watch a Chick Flick (Midnight in Paris), rather than our usual monthly game

of Bunco.

Music Notes

I am never moving again! That thought passes through my mind whenever I go through the process of moving

to a new place. The planning, the packing, the loading and unloading, arranging furniture, filling cabinets and

organizing closets, handling pets—it’s all enough to drive me crazy! As I write this article, Matthew and I are in

the process of moving to a new home. Although the stress is tempered with excitement, it’s still stress. And

stressful times make me especially glad for the words of comfort and peace that I recall from singing hymns:

All my hope on God is founded; he doth still my trust renew, me through change and chance he

guideth, only good and only true… (665)

Teach me thy patience; still with thee in closer, dearer company, in work that keeps faith sweet

and strong… (660)

In our joys and in our sorrows, days of toil and hours of ease, still he calls, in cares and

pleasures, “Christian, love me more than these… (550)

Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith, whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the

lathe, be there at our labors, and give us, we pray, your strength in our hearts, Lord… (482)

The hymnal is a rich repository of faith. The words of some hymns come directly from the Bible. Most hymns

are poems that are inspired by and help to illuminate the scriptures. If you’ve never tried reading the hymns as

poetry, I think you’ll be in for a surprise. Although music can amplify the text, and helps us to commit it to

memory; reading the hymns as poetry allows us to slow down and ponder the truths found in each verse. Take

the time to explore the hymnal and let these poems of faith—spanning hundreds of years and encompassing

countless spiritual journeys— speak to you in a new way.

Here are some February Music Ministry events to put on your calendar:

February 5: The Choristers sing at the 9:00 a.m. service

February 22: Ash Wednesday: No Choristers Rehearsal. Adult Choir warm-up at 6:15 p.m.,

Service at 7:00 p.m.

February 26: The First Sunday of Lent: Great Litany sung at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

Best wishes for continued blessings in the New Year,

Mark

Sharing Faith: Dinner Conversations

Thursday, April 26, 2012

How has your faith impacted your life? Please join the Episcopal Diocese of Texas for an evening of small group conversations, bringing

together members from different Episcopal churches where possible, about faith. The evening will begin

with a simple meal in parishioner homes across the diocese.

We are planning for this special spirit-filled event now! St. Mark’s will host 7-10 dinner groups; there

will be a host and moderator at each dinner with a maximum of 15 people attending. The role of the host

will be to provide the location (home, church, meeting space) and a simple meal for up to 15 participants

plus the host(s) and moderator.

The moderator will participate in a one-hour training prior to the event and will moderate the discussion

with questions provided by the diocese.

Lisa Martin is the Dinner Coordinator for St. Mark’s and will be our primary contact to help facilitate the

event for St. Mark’s. However, Lisa cannot do this alone—she needs your help as dinner hosts and

moderators! If you are willing to host or moderate one of the dinners, please contact Lisa at 512-431-

7716 or at [email protected].

Participants will register online beginning on March 1. Response will be sent via email. Arrangements

will be made for those without Internet access. Guests will attend at the dinner dialogue evening on April

26 ready to make new friends and to share with others in the experience of faith in God.

Each of us has our own personal faith story, and sharing our stories deepens our own faith as well as helps

others to recognize how God has worked in their lives. On this evening of Sharing Faith, it is our hope

that you will experience a deeper understanding of your own faith as a Christian disciple and as an

Episcopalian.

Please make plans now to participate in this community-wide event!

Summer Activities for St. Mark’s Children

Mark your calendars for St. Mark’s Summer Activities!

The annual Heifer Living Gift Market will be held on the lawn at 11:00 a.m. on

Sunday, June 3. Join us for the fun!

Vacation Bible School for children 4 years through 6th

grade will be held on June

5 through 8. There will be childcare for young children of parent leaders. A VBS

team will be formed next month to begin planning. Please talk to Cathy Nelson if you are interested

in helping with VBS this year. We’d love to share this great experience with both you and your

children!

Camp Allen camps and events for children ages 8 through 18 years open on June 3.

Check the board in the Parish Hall for applications, or go to Camp Allen’s website,

http://www.campallen.org/summercamp/calendar, for on-line registration, registration

forms, information, and the calendar for campers and counselors.

Christian Formation

For Adults – 10:00 a.m. Grace Chapel

During the month of February we will be preparing our hearts and minds for the season of Lent. We will

spend two weeks looking at two of the Church’s mystics: Julian of Norwich and St. Teresa of Avila.

Marie Peterek will talk to us the Sunday before the beginning of Lent about Journaling through Lent. On

the last Sunday of the month we will begin our five-week class on Wisdom Literature, which will be

taught by the Rev. Cecilia Smith.

February 26 Wisdom Literature

For Children and Youth (by Cathy Nelson, Director of Religious Education)

We continue to make our way through the season of Epiphany this month. We will hear stories of Jesus’ healing of

Peter’s mother-in-law and a leper, and then of Jesus’ transfiguration. These stories of the “signs and wonders” of

Jesus remind us that he was sent by God to be the light of the world and to bring God’s kingdom to the world.

The season of Epiphany ends with the Pancake Supper on Tuesday, February 21, and the season of Lent begins on

Ash Wednesday, February 22. Families can attend one of three services here at St. Mark’s, at 7:15 a.m., 12:15 p.m.

or 7:00 p.m., for the imposition of ashes. At this time, when we confess our sins and ask God to “create in me a

clean heart,” we enter the forty days of Lent during which Christians imitate Jesus’ withdrawal into the wilderness

for forty days to fast, pray and spend time in self-examination.

The Wednesday evening Soup Suppers and music program can add meaning to the season. At home, families might

practice Lenten disciplines by giving up activities or things as a way of remembering or honoring the sacrifices that

Jesus made for us, and taking on something extra during Lent—saying special prayers, collecting money or food for

the poor, reading the Bible or spending more time at church—as a way of remembering what Jesus took on for us.

In the Godly Play class for Pre-Kindergartners and Kindergartners and the Godly Play Two class for 1st and 2

nd

graders, the children will hear two of the parables that Jesus told as he taught his followers, the Parable of the Good

Samaritan and the Parable of the Pearl, and on the first Sunday of Lent they will hear the Mystery of Easter.

The 3rd

, 4th

and 5th

graders are following the lectionary using the Living the Good News curriculum. This month,

the lessons will focus primarily on the Gospel readings from the book of Mark.

The Middle School class will continue to plan their own mission and ministry outreach activities, including helping

to collect money for the Souper Bowl of Caring; making Valentine’s Day cards for the neighbors who benefit from

the work of the Shower Ministry led by St. Mark’s women at the Trinity Street; and making Anglican rosaries to be

given to those who receive a pastoral care visit from Mother Elizabeth and Mother Susie.

Danielle Adkins and Aimee Tennant will lead the High School class in discussions about The Merchants of Cool, a

Frontline production about marketing products to youth.
