FROM THE PASTOR

“Preach the word. Be ready to do it whether it is convenient or inconvenient…”

-2 Timothy 4:2 (CEB)

Last March, 2011, the church held a special mee ng to hear the report and recommenda ons of the “Checking Vital

Signs – Assessing your local church potenal” Task force. The District Superintendent a&ended the mee ng, and so

did many of you.

We all heard the report and recommenda ons. In fact, some of you offered your recommenda ons at the mee ng

as well.

Since adop ng the report and recommenda ons, the Task Force has been working to implement them. It has not

been an easy task, but by God’s help and with a spirit of discernment, members of the Task Force have been

mee ng, praying and sharing together. I complement the team for their willingness to be involved and for their

sincere concern for the future of our church.

One of the recommendaons is to change worship mes. Aer much discussion, it was decided that beginning

Easter Sunday, April 8th

, and going forward, there will only be one worship service. Worship will be at 11 o’clock

and Sunday school will connue to be at 9:45am.

We are praying that with this change and with a unified body, visitors to our church will be open to coming back and

worshiping with us and become part of our church family.

There is strength in numbers. We all know that. But more important is that as things change around us, we too

must be prepared to do whatever it takes to reach others with the gospel. Perhaps that’s what Paul had in mind in

his final words to the young preacher Timothy. “Be thoroughly prepared to preach the word in season and out of

season…”

I pray that you will help us make this change a frui4ul one – for CHUMC and God’s kingdom.

SENIORS LUNCHEON

The Seniors started off 2012 in a fun way!

Thirty-six seniors attended the play "Blue Ridge Mountain Christmas" at Barksdale's Hanover Theatre. The music and talent of the performers helped us stay in the-Christmas mood a little longer. For our meeting on January 12 we played Bingo. A B Jones made it a fun time as our caller! He made sure everyone won some of our multitude of "white elephant" prizes. Our next meeting will be Thursday, February 9 at 12 noon. We will have a covered dish lunch. We are so fortunate to have as our speaker, Roy Proctor, Arts and Enter-tainment writer/critic for the Richmond Times Dispatch. He will inform and enter-tain us with his stories! Come and bring a friend to this fun program and enjoy the fellowship of the Seniors.

Hi everyone, I'd like to invite all of you to a class that will be starting on November 6th during the Sunday School hour, in the Choir Room. The class is called Why We Sing, and is open to every single member of the church whether you're a musician or not. We will have a different topic for each Sunday of the month, so even if you can't come every week, I encourage you to join us for a week that interests you and gain some in-sight into the music of the church- the history, the liturgy, and the reasons behind what we sing and play each Sunday. 1st week: Hymn Study: We'll take a look at some of your favorite hymns and learn who wrote them and why, so that we'll have a deeper understanding of the music and the text as we sing the hymns together. Suggestions are welcome for hymns that you'd like to learn more about! 2nd week: Music Theory for the Layperson: Don't let the name of this class scare you. We'll be learning basic techniques for understanding the music in the hymnal as a congregation member, so you can be more confident in lifting your voice and sing-ing every Sunday. No prior music experience required! 3rd week: Music in the Methodist Church: John and Charles Wesley understood the importance of music when they founded the Methodist Church, which is why our United Methodist Hymnal is one of the most commonly used hymnal across denomina-tions. We'll discuss the role they envisioned for music in the Methodist service and in the Christian life, as well as discuss the service music as it pairs with our liturgy. 4th week: Contemporary Christian Singing: There is a wide range of opinions about contemporary Christian music, but no one can deny that it's had an impact in our denomination, and in the universal Church. We'll take a look at the contemporary movement as it has developed over the years, and learn some of the most influential contemporary songs. 5th week: Grab-bag/Discussion: For the odd 5th week, we'll focus on a topic that is of interest to anyone in the class, in a dis-cussion format.

Our Music Director, Kristen Schussler, has created a blog, organistsdoitwithpedals.wordpress.comorganistsdoitwithpedals.wordpress.comorganistsdoitwithpedals.wordpress.comorganistsdoitwithpedals.wordpress.com, to share and talk about church-musician-y things, dis-cuss some of the chancel choir's repertoire, the music planned for Sunday services, and other topical discussions. Stop by and say hi if you're in the mood for some hymn background and

history, or a corny music joke! If you're interested, you can sign up to receive an email when it's updated. It'll also be linked to the new CHUMC website, and you can always check for updates on Facebook!

*MORE CHANGES ARE UNDERWAY!*

Many of you may remember when the "Checking Vital Signs" study was completed and the findings of

this group were shared with our congregation. This was a church-wide meeting held on April 10, 2011.

At the conclusion of this presentation, input was requested from you, asking for your ideas and rec-

ommendations as to how you felt we could have a more viable church. Since that meeting individuals

and groups have been working diligently to make your ideas a reality. To date, we have hired our

Music Director, Kristen Schussler; we have hired Stacey Spear, our Bell Choir Director; a Transportation

Team is being created to transport members to doctor appointments, grocery shopping, and worship

services; a new position has been approved by Finance and Church Council to add a Program Director

to our staff; and we hope to increase the visibility of our church through Facebook and our upcoming

web site. As you can see, changes are indeed taking place since this study was completed and your

ideas made known to us.

Another major change is going to be made based on your input and the attendance we are cur-

rently experiencing on Sunday mornings. Effective Easter Sunday, April 8th, we will

discontinue our 8:45 AM worship service. We will have one service going forward at 11:00 AM with Sunday School starting at 10:00 AM. One service will allow our congregation to wor-

ship as one body and will increase the energy and spirit of our worship service. We will also have

the opportunity to get to know the folks who have worshiped at another time throughout the years.

This decision will be evaluated as we go forward. We will be asking for your input, as it is our de-

sire to make this transition as smooth as possible.

THE UNITED METHODIST MEN, ALONG WITH

THE BOY SCOUT TROOP, WILL BE MAKING

BRUNSWICK STEW ON SATURDAY, MARCH 31,

UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RENOWNED STEW

MASTER BILLY MOORE.

THE COST WILL BE $7.00/QUART. ORDER EAR-

LY, SO YOU DON’T MISS OUT. PLEASE PLACE

YOUR ORDERS WITH THE CHURCH OFFICE,

PHIN WOOD, DICK WHITE, DON GRESKO, OR

UNTIL THEN, IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS,

PLEASE CALL BRUCE ECKER AT 804-746-6484.

The Circuit Rider will begin including a new article

next month. We will be placing a “spotlight” on individuals around the church, and on ministries that we feel should be recognized within the community.

In order to run this article, we will need your help every month. Let us know if there is a person or

ministry that you would like to highlight for the next month.

Please contact the church office, if you would like to

recognize a ministry or someone, with a small paragraph explaining about the individual/ministry and why they have impacted your life. If possible, include a

picture with your paragraph.

We are available at [email protected] and 266-3551

A TRANSPORTATION TEAM

is being created in an effort to provide transporta-tion to medical appointments for members of our congregation. Art Long has agreed to serve as the

coordinator of this committee. We are looking for volunteers who are willing to assist Art with this endeavor. As soon as we get a team together, we will let you

know so that scheduling can begin. This is an im-portant ministry for our church, as some of our

members are unable to drive.

Please give Art a call on 746-9296 if you will be able to help.

I know we all have different memories of our previous bazaars - tired feet, exhaustion, back pain, fun, laughter, good food, shopping sprees wonderful fellowship, etc. Plans are back on the drawing board for our third bazaar. Our previ-ous bazaars, after expenses, brought in around $10,000! This could provide a “real boost” to our church finances. BAZAAR EXTRAORDINAIRE III is being planned for FRIDAY and SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19TH and 20TH. Please mark your calanders. Joan Williams and Helen Wood will be actively seeking vendors for our bazaar. Please let them know if you would like to be a vendor. If you know any crafters, be sure to let them know about our bazaar. We will keep you updated as future plans are finalized. Carolyn Pendleton and Phin Wood are serving as chair-persons for our bazaar. Let them know if you would like to help!

VIRGINIA STATE EMPLOYEES HAVE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPORT PRISON CHAPLAINCY

Chaplain Service Prison Ministry of Virginia, Inc. Is the official agency that provides Chaplains to Virginia’s state prisons and juvenile correctional centers. The Chaplains serve as prison pastors and religious program coordinators in 31 state adult prisons and at three state juvenile correctional cen-ters. The chaplains conduct worship services, teach, counsel, and coordinate the many volunteers who assist in ministering to the male, female and youthful offenders incarcerated in the state prison system. The chaplains are supported by denominations, churches, foundations, and individuals, as well as by some of the profits from the Department of Corrections’ Commissary Fund. Chaplain Service is a registered charity with the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC). The CVC Code for Chaplain Service is 3002. This presents a unique opportunity for state employees from all of the various state agencies to support prison ministry and to help change lives and ensure safer communities. Chap-lains are essential to the Commonwealth of Virginia in that they ensure equal access to religious pro-gramming and services as required by the First Amendment and the federal RLUIPA (Religious Land Usage and Institutionalized Persons Act) law.
