Shalom Aleychem!

We are entering the month of Shvat, in which we celebrate Tu Bishvat, the New Year of the trees. Shvat has become a time for remembering our obligations, as Jews, to protect the Earth and to guard against any needless destruction of natural resources (ba’al tashchit). In this vein, the religious school will be holding both a Tu Bishvat seder and collecting money to plant a grove in honor of Dr. Spotts.

From the Rabbi’s Study….

It is a fortuitous coincidence, this year, that the “World Wide Wrap” - Sunday, February 4 at 10 a.m. - a day on which thousands of Jews around the country, including here at Beth Shalom, will be laying tefillin - falls on the same weekend as Tu Bishvat. On the face of it, these observances seem so different. Wrap-ping a black leather box on your arm, in a ritual at least two thousand years old, is a ritualistic act that de-fies rational explanation. Tu Bishvat, on the other hand, speaks of our responsibility for the physical basis of our existence. The Sages spoke of two categories of mitzvot: mishpatim (laws) and hukim (decrees). ‘Laws’are rational laws of ethical behavior which everybody in the world understand, and ‘decrees’ are those rituals unique to us as Jews. These two classes of mitzvot seem totally opposite—the former is rational and practical, the latter weird and ‘religious.’ These two realms, though, not only complement each other, but are necessary for each other. Rituals like laying tefillin bring us into relationship with God. When we wrap the tefillin strap around our arm, we symbolically bind ourselves to God’s will in our lives, allowing God to direct us in our every action. It is a daily symbolic marriage with God. If we do this every morning, it can serve as a spiritual tune-up, reminding us to do Godly actions like visiting the sick and caring for the needy. Tikkun Olam, the repair of the physical world, is the fulfillment of this, carrying through on our intentions in practical ways. Torah includes both of these realms, teaching us how to relate to God, to each other, and to the world. We have a lot going on at Beth Shalom: classes, groups, celebrations, worship… I hope to see you there!

Beyedidut, Rabbi David B. Siff

********************************************

Did you know…

Ba’al Tashchit is the prohibition against any wasteful actions. This law is derived from the Biblical pro-hibition against cutting down an enemy’s fruit trees during a siege, but extends toward any unnecessary destruction of even a small piece of food, furniture, or clothing. God created everything in the world, and we must treat all of creation with dignity. Tefillin consist of 2 black leather boxes with leather straps; one of the boxes is placed above the forehead, one on the left arm. By laying tefillin, we fulfill the commandment from the 1st paragraph of the Shema: “You shall attach them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be frontlets between your eyes.” The mitzvah of tefillin is easy to do! Halacha teaches us to do it once a day as a spiritual tune-up, to di-rect our heart and mind in the service of God; it’s a wonderful spiritual practice, even if you do it just once. Come and try it on at our “World Wide Wrap,” on Sunday, February 4th.

Halacha of Purim

Purim is a time for celebrating our survival as Jews in the face of persecution throughout the ages, and customarily is the one day of the year that we let ourselves go completely “wild and crazy” in celebration. It is technically permissi-ble to work on Purim, but considered improper to go to one’s job or pursue business. The Sages have said: 'Whoever works on the day of Purim does not see any sign of blessing (through his work).' So you’re better off spending the

day going to all the celebrations around town!

Purim has 4 of its own Mitzvot: 1. The Reading of the Megillah (Mikra Megillah)—Not just for kids! All of us are supposed to read the Book of Esther (in Hebrew or English) both Saturday night and Sunday morning. If you can’t make it to a service, you can fulfill this mitzvah alone, but it’s more fun at Beth Shalom. 2. The Festive Purim Meal (Seudat Purim)—It’s a mitzvah to have a festive meal on the day of Purim! We have been generously invited to join members of The Learning Shul for a seudah at the Rockbridge Club at 6 p.m., or host your own and invite friends and new acquaintances. 3. Sending Gifts (Mishloach Manot)—It’s a mitzvah to give at least 2 pieces of food to 2 different people - see Re-becca Pinsker’s article on one good way to accomplish this. 4. Gifts to the poor (Matanot l'Evyonim)—It’s a mitzvah to distribute food to the poor, to help them experience the joy of the day and to express our own joy. This year, we will be doing this through a food drive on Saturday night. Please bring a can of something appetizing as the “entry price” to the Megillah reading.

As part of our ongoing effort to make Beth Shalom a more warm and welcoming environment, we en-

courage you to take a look a Ron Wolfson’s book, “The Spirituality of Welcoming: How to Transform

Your Congregation into a Sacred Community,” and help think about how all of us can improve Beth

Chevre, my friends,

In the story The Lorax, Theo-dor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, introduces the “Once-ler” who cuts down the beautiful Truffula trees so that he can use their wonderful silk tufts to knit "thneeds". Thneed sales are so successful that the Once-ler

builds a factory and invents the Super Axe Hacker, which cuts down four trees at a time. The Lorax speaks up in defense of the trees, animals, air and water that the Once-ler is destroy-ing in pursuit of bigger and bigger profits. Finally, when the last Truffula tree is cut down, production of the Thneeds ends. Closed factories, polluted air, polluted water and an uninhab-itable wasteland are all that remain on the once beautiful site. The Lorax can no longer live here, but he leaves behind a small pile of rocks on which the word UNLESS is inscribed. The Lorax is an environmental fable the students in the Religious School will watch and read as part of their Tu B’Shvat learning. I selected this story because it sparks dis-cussion where students will be able to draw conclusions and make predictions about the environmental impact and wise use of resources. The Lorax illustrates an ecosystem, a natu-ral unit in which living and non-living parts interact. All of the parts are linked together and functions as a unit. When one of the parts is altered or damaged, the entire system may fail. The concept, of all parts being linked together and functioning as a unit, is easily connected to our Jewish com-munity. When I looked up the word UNLESS in the thesau-rus [the one inscribed on a pile of rocks] IF NOT was one alternative offered. It reminded me of one of the most famous sayings recorded in Pirkei Avot by Hillel, a rabbi from the first century BCE “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am not for others, what am I? And if not now, when?” In the 6 months I have been part of the Beth Shalom Community I have watched and listened and learned a great many things. Most significant is the honor of being part of a community such as this; one that is bound together and functions together for the greater good. Even after it sustained ‘damage’ that created circumstances where the entire system could have failed this community did not because of all of you. The Beth Shalom community fulfilled the real meaning of the words of Hillel, each person stood up for others, themselves, and with compassion made decisions to make wise use of its resources and continues to do so and thus thrives. Tu B’Shvat celebrates the renewed life rising, though hidden, in the trees that give us fruit. Rabbi Arthur Waskow wrote, “Five hundred years ago, the mystical Kabbalists con-nected these fruitful trees with the Divine Tree of all life. For they saw God as a Tree with Its roots in heaven and Its fruit our very world. Now we know what they did not -- that ALL trees are fruitful and life-giving because they keep the earth in balance, breathing in carbon dioxide and breathing out oxy-gen.” He further notes that, “Since this celebration of rebirth comes in mid-winter, Tu B'Shvat reminds us that in grim,

From the Director of Education….

dull, and deadly times life may be stirring anew be-neath the surface.” There is new life stirring throughout the Beth Shalom community and I see it in so many areas. Within the Religious School we are slowly nurturing and supporting our students and their families through their spiritual journey. On this journey we are taking the message of The Lorax that all our actions impact everyone around us and that our Jewish actions are an integral part of our lives. We are taking time to learn together as families and acknowledging our communal responsibility to not harvest the fruit too early thus possibly stunting growth. During the fall semester together as families, we explored many areas from blessings and Torah to G-d and Shabbat. During the spring semester families will explore mizrach and Je-rusalem, Prophets, Miriam and Passover creating won-derful ritual objects to use with our families. We will celebrate Purim with a carnival and enjoy the mitzvoth of m’shloach manot [sending gifts to our friends] and matanot l’evyonim [giving to the poor], hearing the reading of the Megillah, and a seudah [meal] of joy. Like trees in which the juice begins in winter-time to rise, a new semester of adult education is rising with the joy of davvening together while wrapped in Tefillin during the World Wide Wrap, todah rabah to Ronnie and Herb Drucker for all their hard work and the new television. The study of Pirkei Avot, Hebrew, the Siddur, personal spiritual journeys, the story of Ruth along with the Sunday lecture series are sure signs of continued growth, commitment, and the inte-gral link that we all have to one another and to our Jewish community. When we meet together to study we create a holy space and it is said that G-d sits with us. Tu B’Shvat, the New Year of the Trees, repre-sents the being aware of the cycle of life, growth, and change. This is how we, as Jews, mark points in time by carving out space in time thus, making time holy. Yes, I believe we at Beth Shalom are a healthy ecosys-tem, a natural unit in which living and non-living parts interact and that ALL of the parts are linked together and functions as a unit. May we all be blessed in our continued learning and growth. How to fulfill the mitzvah of m’shloach manot-sending gifts to friends? So simple all of us can do it (even the children)!! Purchase a beautiful mug filled with goodies to give to your local friends and relatives! We are sell-ing these lovely gifts for only $4.00!!! Send in your order form and we will have students deliver your goodies on Saturday night and Sunday after the Megil-lah reading.

RAMBLINGS AND RUMINATIONS ON JEWISH EDUCATON AND JEWISH LIFE

Rabbi Dr. Leon H. Spotts, Beth Shalom Resident Scholar

THE EMERGENT HOLIDAY OF TU BISHVAT

The Holiday of Tu Bishvat falls this year on Saturday, February 3, 2007, and will be observed on Sunday, February 4. The evolvement of the Holiday over the centuries is an object lesson in the dynamic quality of Jew-ish law and observance.

Phase 1—In the Mishnah (tractate Rosh Hashanah) the first day of Shevat was designated as one of the four New Years in the Jewish calendar – more spe-cifically, The New Year of the Trees. In that capac-ity, the first of Shevat marked the end of the old year and the beginning of the new year for purposes of calculating the term of orlah for each tree. Orlah refers to the prohibition on eating the fruit of a newly planted tree for the first three years of the tree’s life. The total crop of the fourth year was to be diverted to the Priests and Levites who maintained the Holy Temple. For these purposes, any tree stand-ing on Tu Bishvat was considered to have aged an-other year. From the fifth year on, in the life of the tree, Tu Bishvat served as the date for the determination of whether a given piece of fruit should be applied to the tithing for the “old” year (i.e., prior to Tu Bish-vat) and that which should accrue to the “new” year (i.e., from Tu Bishvat onward). Phase 2—From this conception it was but a short step to viewing Tu Bishvat as the demarcation point between the “old” growth of the tree and the verdant “new” growth as the trees in Israel began to bloom. Indeed, the first blooming tree, the almond tree, came to signify the end of winter in Israel. But on what Hebrew date did the almond tree normally bloom? Here was an example of the classic dispute between the disciples of Rabbi Hillel and Rabbi Shammai (1st Century B.C.E.). Rabbi Shammai held that the New Year of the Trees, when the first blooms were manifest should be properly assigned to the 1st of Shevat. But Rabbi Hillel argued that the appropriate date was the 15th day of Shevat. As in most of these debates, Hillel’s position prevailed and the celebration of the Holiday was moved to the

Page 5

15th of Shevat – hence the name, Tu Bishvat, which means simply the 15th day of the Hebrew month Shevat. Phase 3—After the destruction of the Second Temple and the dispersion of the Jews throughout Europe, it became customary for Jews in the Diaspora to partake of the fruits of the land of Israel. In this way they maintained their connection with the historic homeland. Phase 4—In the 16th Century, the Kabbalists (Jewish mystics) who settled in the city of Tzefat (Safed) under the charismatic leadership of Rabbi Isaac Luris, institu-tionalized the custom of eating fruits from the land of Israel on Tu Bishvat by the creation of a unique Tu Bish-vat Seder. In addition to the consumption of fruits which grow in Israel, this Seder featured the use of mixtures of red and white wines to symbolize the progression of the seasons in Israel. The Tu Bishvat Seder has been revived in contemporary times, and has become a popular way to celebrate Tu Bishvat. Phase 5—As Jews from Europe began to settle in Israel beginning in the late 19th Century, they faced the task of aforestating the land, which had been denuded over the Centuries by the Ottoman Turks. Tu Bishvat, The New Year of the Trees, was now seen as an appropriate annual occasion to contribute to this effort. Accordingly, in 1892, students from Zichron L’tzion were taken on a field trip to plant trees in the land of Israel. In 1908 the Jewish National Fund, which had been established sev-eral years earlier to acquire and develop land in Israel for the Jewish people, took on the aforestation of Israel as one of its major projects. Over the past Century, the pur-chase of trees in Israel through the Jewish National fund has become a widespread practice for the observance of Tu Bishvat. Phase 6—Finally, in contemporary times, as ecological and environmental concerns have become more signifi-cant, Tu Bishvat has increasingly been viewed among Jews as a an appropriate occasion for undertaking pro-jects that will improve the environment both in Israel and in other lands throughout the world where Jews live. In this manner, the Jewish New Year of the Trees has be-come a vehicle for us and our coreligionists to contribute significantly to the never ending task of Tikkun Olam, the physical and moral improvement of this world in which we live.

7th Annual Columbia Jewish Film Festival March 17-22

This year’s Festival will feature such acclaimed films as “Live and Become” and “The Rape of Europa,” as well as others to be announced soon. A Sunday Pa-trons Brunch and showing of a documentary will be held at the Columbia Mu-seum of Art on March 18th. “Live and Become” is about Operation Moses, a joint effort between American and Israeli troops aimed at relocating refugees from Africa to Israel. Hoping to shield her son from an impoverished life, 8-year old Soloman’s Christian mother forces him to declare himself Jewish and join the exodus with a Jewish woman who has lost her son earlier that day. “The Rape of Europa”, a feature documentary, is the epic story of the systematic theft and deliberate destruc-tion of European artwork by the Nazis and efforts to safe-guard and return this displaced art. The complete festival schedule will be available soon on the Nickelodeon Web site, www.nickelodeon.org.
