Repair Scams

Scam artists can show up at any time, butparticularly after a disaster such as ahurricane. Unlicensed contracting is afelony as provided in FS 489. Thefollowing tips can help you avoidbecoming a target:DO hire someone from a local andreputable company. Ask friends, co-workers or neighbors for referrals.DO get written estimates from severalfirms.DO be cautious of anyone soliciting forwork door-to-door, pressuring you for animmediate decision, or requestingpayment in full up-front. DO read all documents prior to signingany agreement.DO make sure the work is completed toyour satisfaction prior to payment in full.DO obtain a “release of lien” from thecontractor once the work is complete. This protects you from any responsibilityfor payment in case the contractor did notsettle the bill with building materialsuppliers.DON’T trust any potential contractor thatsuggests the permits be obtained by you. This usually means the potentialcontractor cannot obtain one. The

INDIALANTIC FIRE RESCUE

The cold weather has recently touchedour area and it is important that heating

systems be inspected before operating. Chimneys andheat strips need to be cleaned and inspected prior toturning on the heat. The use of portable keroseneheaters is not recommended inside the house. Oilheaters should be inspected for proper operation. Thiswill prevent overloading the oil burner with fuelcausing the furnace to become extremely hot andstarting a fire. Electric heaters must have a tip-overswitch that will turn off the heater in the event it istipped over. Smoke alarms should be tested to becertain they are operational. The safest use of portableheaters is to turn them off before retiring for theevening or leaving the home.

Indialantic Fire Rescue will hold a CPR class for thepublic on March 5th and 6th. A nominal fee will becharged to cover course materials. Please call 723-0366 to register or to obtain additional information. Registration deadline is February 18, 2005.

Conserving water is in yourhands!

Saving Florida’s water resources is avital responsibility that will take

everyone’s participation to besuccessful. The Water ConservationRule – water before 10 a.m. or after 4

p.m.- was adopted by the St. Johns RiverWater Management District in 1991 and

is in effect year-round.

Why do we have this rule?

contractor cannot obtain one. Thebuilding official checks licensure, insurance and worker’s compensationinsurance prior to approving a permit.DON’T fall for financing offers made bycontractors. These can be in the form of ahome equity loan with high interest andpayments.DON’T trust salespeople that use scaretactics and threats like “your roof will fallin if it’s not done today”.Deal only with licensed contractors. Thework of unlicensed contractors is usuallysubstandard and ends up costing muchmore in the long run. Once you havedecided on a contractor:Keep good records - all paperwork relatedto your project should be kept in oneplace including:· Copies of the contract,· Log or journal of correspondence withthe contractor· Photographs taken as the jobprogresses. If you do have a problem:· Try to work it out with the contractor· Follow up any phone conversationswith a certified letter, so you havedocumentation that the letter wasreceived. You can also contact the BuildingDepartment at 727-3377, Brevard CountyLicensing Regulation and Enforcement at321-633-2058 or the Department ofBusiness and Professional Regulation at407-245-0750 or 850-277-9577 forfurther guidance.Detective Stephanie Altvater

Irrigating during the hours when itwill do your lawn the most good cansave you money on your water billor on your electric bill if you have awell/pump.Watering your lawn before 10 a.m.or after 4 p.m. allows the water toseep into the ground where thirstygrass and plant roots can drink it up,promoting healthy plants with deeproot systems.Water sprinkled on lawns during thehottest part of the day is wasted –65% evaporatesWater droplets on plants can act likea magnifying glass, causing the sunto burn the leaves.Though Florida usually receivesabout 50 inches of rain each year, only a small amount seeps into theground to replenish undergroundaquifers.
