FEBRUARY 20, 2020 NORTH FORENSICS TEAM STEVE SPARKS MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT

Each year, the North Forensics Team hosts a home tournament in honor of a North alumnus and

former North Forensics coach, Steve Sparks. Steve passed away unexpectedly in 2007, due to a

pulmonary embolism at 26 years old. For three years, he volunteered for the team every day for

seven months to coach students. On the weekends, he would judge for us and travel with us to

tournaments. It is in honor of our dear friend, mentor, coach, and colleague that we decided to

name our tournament the Steve Sparks Memorial Forensics Tournament. This year, 12 schools

attended the Steve Sparks Tournament. It was the team’s third tournament this year and the

biggest team of competitors yet. The North Forensics Team does competitive public speaking.

The team compete in a variety of events, covering traditional speeches, acting, and interpreting

literature. They typically compete at about 7 or 8 tournaments from the end of January through

March, and then compete at the State tournament in April. The State tournament will be co-

hosted by North and Memorial in Eau Claire this year.

FOOD PANTRY UPDATES SHOPPING & STOCKING

Sometimes you just gotta give in and

say, “Yes!” That’s exactly what I did

this week when a few of my

volunteers in the Pantry/WearHouse

wanted to help me shop and stock

the shelves.

So, we met at Walmart after school

and loaded up two carts full of food –

using our math skills to find the very

best deals, of course. I should’ve

realized that taking teenagers to

shop for food after school was

probably not the best idea. Lesson

learned. From now on, I’ll be holding

better snacks in my office for my

student volunteers to enjoy while

being put to work!

We had a lot of fun and their

enthusiasm is contagious. It’s a

wonderful thing to see these students

so eager to volunteer their time to

help others.

We had more donations this week

than we had room for on the shelves;

so, we took a field trip around the

school and discovered a new shelf in

the LC. It’s a perfect new addition to

the Food Pantry & WearHouse. (Left)

PUBLIC SCHOOL OPEN ENROLLMENT:

FEBRUARY 3 - APRIL 30, 2020

Wisconsin residents in grades 4K -12 may apply to attend school in a

school district other than the one in which they live. For example: a child

who lives in the Altoona School District could apply to attend the Eau

Claire Area School District (ECASD). Students in pre-kindergarten may

participate in limited circumstances; parents should call Jennifer Knutson

at 852-3003 to find out if their preschool-aged child(ren) qualify.

Students who are currently attending the ECASD through open enrollment

DO NOT need to reapply.

The open enrollment application for the 2020-21 school year is February

3– April 30, 2020. An online application will be available to the public

beginning Monday, February 3, and closing at 4:00 pm on April 30, 2020.

For more information about open enrollment, please go to:

NORTHERNAIRES HIT THE ROAD It was another weekend of firsts, with the North High School Northernaires leaving the state of Wisconsin for the first time! We

enjoyed a road trip to Illinois,

complete with coach buses, hotel

pool parties, and an early morning

performance at the Clash of the

Sequins Show Choir Invitational at

Naperville North High School. We

had a great day watching other show

choirs and brought home 2nd

selected for the Show Stopper

Award!

If you couldn't travel along with us, check out these amazing

photographs taken by event photographers Scott Butler +

Midwest and we had SO MUCH FUN on this stage!

We greatly appreciate the support of our NHS Show Choir

do this without you!

FEBRUARY ACP RECAP ACP Every day is a great day to be a Husky, especially on Feb 20th! We had over 40 community

volunteers visit our students and staff at Memorial and North for ACP this week.

Grade 9: Thank you to our Junior Achievement business partners for making February’s ACP lesson

so relevant for our students! Students learned about workplace communications such as dealing with

customers, communicating effectively with your supervisor and communicating well on your team to

reach a goal. Students learned many effective workplace communication skills are practiced in school

on a daily basis!

Grade 10: Students watched a presentation on Youth Apprenticeship (YA). Students learned what a

Youth Apprenticeship is and the value of this type of work experience! Interested students were given

a YA application and new YA brochure. YA applications are due Tues. March 31st to Student

Services. Thank you to our top-notch Homeroom teachers for delivering this presentation. Please note, Juniors will be receiving

YA next month during ACP.

Grade 11: Students critiqued resumes. Students learned what an outstanding resume looks like compared to a mediocre or poor

resume. Students who do not have a resume were given a handout to start building their resume during ACP Instructional

Time. Students who already have a resume were given time to update their resume if needed. Thank you to our exceptional

Homeroom teachers for facilitating this activity. Let your resume shine over all others!

Grade 12: Thank you to Chippewa Valley Votes, a nonpartisan, community volunteer group, for assisting all seniors at North/

Memorial with voter registration during ACP Instructional Time. This collaborative activity allowed teachers and trained

community members to work side-by-side to assist students in demonstrating the skills to participate in the electoral process. In

2018, the Eau Claire School District was one of the first districts in Wisconsin to pass a policy that requires this service to all

seniors in order to adequately prepare them for participation in the electoral process.
