“I Hope You Know”
Traditions come and go. It is unclear when (for the
Centerville church) the tradition of recognizing certain groups and individuals for their personal
milestones in life began. Certainly a close inspection of archived Messengers would reveal the
beginning of said honor, but for the purposes of this
installment, such research was neither performed nor necessary. Suffice it to say, those who have
arrived at the mark of 80 years and couples who have achieved the “golden” anniversary of 50 years
receive this recognition.
As Tuesday, February 19th, 2013 dawned across Centerville, one of our own; a native to this area,
ushered in a milestone of life. In so doing, he saw himself moving four decades closer to having that
honorable annual mention in the Centerville
Messenger. To mark the occasion of reaching the “halfway” point of being an annual birthday
honoree, this issue of The Messenger is affectionately dedicated to Craig Shelton. It is
fitting to note, some of our congregation believe
this author shares an equivalent age to our honoree. Yet in reality, several (multiple, really) years must
first pass before an opportunity to repay...reciprocate this honor and until such an
advanced age is reached.
1997 marked the beginning of Craig’s ministry with and for the Centerville church. During those years,
he served along side and in the stead of his mentor in ministry. Over the course of these 16 years, a
period of his time was devoted to our youth through
the school system as a guidance counselor. Of no small significance is the fact that while stepping
away from the ministry here, and allowing that role to be filled by another, Chris Webb had no louder
voice of support than that of his predecessor. Such
July 30th, 2012 marked Craig’s return to the
shared ministry of this congregation. The youth and our church family is well served through his
devotion to God and his affection for others growing by the “training and admonition of the
Lord.” His family, both of choice and of origin,
lend their love and support both to each other and to this great church. They help this body of the
Lord’s church “by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every
part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love” (Ephesians 4:16).
I hope you know, the Centerville church has no
greater friend than Craig Shelton. I hope you know the Lord’s church needs more men of his
devotion to faith and family, character and
courage working in our midst. These words are written in the spirit of giving honor to whom
honor is due...and because of the reality that with rapid aging opportunities such as these become
fewer and fewer. Happy birthday Craig!
is an aspect of humility, all in the body of the
Lord’s church would do well to adopt.
IF YOU HAVE HAD NOTHING TO DO… you
haven't been paying attention. We have had a busy time around here and have not taken
time to slow down. Last Wednesday we enjoyed a full house in the Lighthouse hosted
by Greg, Jennifer, Rachel, and Sidney
Hudgins. It was a great time with some delicious food! Then, on Thursday morning
we had our Senior High Prayer Breakfast. Thanks to Mike Elkins and the leaders of the
FCA group for their support and involvement in making this possible. Sunday night brought
the Senior High Fireside and one of our largest
turnouts this year! Thanks to our hosts, Philip & Alice Anne Jacobs and Jeremy & Meredith
Qualls and for all they do for our group! The food was great and the devotional centered
on AES...Accountability, Example, Submission.
Then on Monday night our Monthly Bible Studies began. The boys met at Matthew &
Cissy Dotson’s home led by Matthew Dotson and Derek Newsom. The girls met at Derek &
Rachel Newsom’s home led by Rachel Newsom and Cissy Dotson. If you missed this
one, I hope you plan to be at the next one
that will be the 3rd Monday of the month!
IT HAS FINALLY ARRIVED! The Senior Spotlight / Senior High Retreat is this
weekend! We have a lot planned and there are sure to be memories made for a lifetime. The theme is “Marathon” as we
look at Matthew 5:41, as well as many verses surrounding the “race of life.” Don’t forget you will be responsible for 3-4 fast
food type meals on your own plus any spending money.
Lodging, transportation, materials, four meals, entertainment and shirts are included in the $60 you paid and/or our budget.
The bus will leave at 9:00 AM Friday morning and we will return by 5:00 PM Sunday. I hope you are as excited as I am!
“FAITH IS THE DARING OF THE SOUL TO GO FARTHER THAN IT
CAN SEE.” -William Newton Clarke. This weekend we plan to
test our faith as well as whom our faith is in. As we think about the “marathon of life,” what are the things we can grasp
to get us through? Second Corinthians gives a little insight as it reads; “While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” Pray for our safety this weekend. Please pray as well that
hearts will be touched, lives will be refocused, and God will be seen as the one to hold tightly too. May we better understand
in this “marathon” the One we serve that created us, will sustain us, and will welcome us home in the end. “With God
all things are possible!” -Mark 10:27 and may we always…
follows His path, -Craig
