A long 1976 season got underway for Stebbing's Royal EuropeanCircus when the show opened at West Palm Beach (Fla.) for a Jan.23-Feb. 1 engagement. It was the third year the show has played forthe South Florida Fair & Exposition.

This year's tour will take the circus into the Gulf states be-fore it heads north towards New England by way of the Mid-Atlanticarea. By the end of August the northern dates will be completedand they'll head south towards Florida.

New for the show this yearis a March 2-7 date at the FunCoast Family Fair at Punta Gorda(Fla.). Other fair dates willinclude Monticello, N.Y., LongIsland, N.Y., Greenville, N.C.,Shelby, Va. and Richmond, Va.Other Stebbing units will beplaying grandstand, indoor andpromotional dates in the east.

The show currently travelson 19 units and carries a bigtop that is an 85 ft round endwith one 40 ft. middle piece.New trucks have been added anda new 40 KW will be added to theshow soon. In all a season ofsome 14,000 miles is anticipated.

Hanneford Off And RunningThe Tommy Hanneford Al Sirat Bicentennial Circus in Cleve-

land (Jan. 19-25), loaded with productions and complicated tech-nical affects, made a favorable impression on the opening nightcrowd. What normally takes weeks of rehearsals was accomplishedovernight and this spectacular production breezed through in twohours and fifty-five minutes - a mere ten minutes over schedule,something virtually unheard of in productions of sucl* magnitude.

Other than Ringling, notouring indoor show carries suchproduction, lighting and stagingeffects. The flooring is blueand white checkerboard celotex,with red carpet throughout thearea. Red, white, blue and goldcurtains cover the arena, thering curbs are red, white and

a great job, not only with thevarious productions, but alsowith the entire musical score.

Other smaller productionsinclude: "Razzle Dazzle**, an op-ening wherein everything revol-ves, spins, runs, rotates, on tirtground and in the air to origin-al music and lyrics in less than

The new edition of the R-Bshow (Blue Unit) is described byVariety as being the top circusin the country. The show offersthrills, chills and spectaclesfor everyone with a total of 23displays in two acts.

The Jan. 14th review namesUrsula Bottcher and her polarbears; Jeanette Williams and herhorses; Charley Bauman's tigers;the riding routines of the Ro-manovi, Slavovi and Paniotovitroupes, as well as the aerialfeats of the Farias and Gaonas.Incidentally, Tito Gaona is nowdoing a triple blindfolded.

Crowd pleasers include AlexGautier's elephants in Red,Whiteand Blue Rampage; the spec de-voted to 200 years of the cir-cus and the wedding of Michu.Another feature has the clownsworking as gymnasts with a hor-se and mats.

Of special interest is themention that Elvin Bale was notperforming because of an acci-dent (see CR, Jan. 19 - Page 4).Also sitting on the sidelines isthe Tzekovi Troupe (wire act)because of a rigging accidentthat injured one of the group.

Ready For '76 SeasonTexans are preparing for a busy circus year as the season

gets underway in that state. Dailey Bros, opened near San Anton-io on Jan. 10th and then moved into the valley area. PranzenBros, opened at Mathis on Jan. 31st and Mid America Circus willmove into the state in March. Circus Vargas also has a long ser-ies of Texas dates after its 1976 opening in Alabama.

G-M's 76 Tour SetPlans for an extensive coast-to-coast tour for the George-

Matthews Circus were announced last week by show manager Sid Kell-ner. We will open the circus at Parkersburg, W. Va., on April 1st,he said.

"We are working on a tour of 35 weeks, playing a combinationof sponsored and cold dates," Kellner told CR. "Most of our majorengagements have already been set and we are now scheduling thesmaller towns and those dates that will be used to break up whatotherwise would be long jumps.'

The program, Kellner addedwill feature a variety of ourstandard acts, plus several newadditions, thus making it an allnew and enlarged performance.A full 10 to 12 piece band willbe carried and Ed Russell is re-turning to handle the ringmasterand side show duties. "We'llhave a show the public will really enjoy."

The show trucks are to berepainted in red and white, andno new additions are planned atthis time. The big top, orangeand white, is still like new andwill be used at every engagement

Arrest MadeNight club hypnotist Ronald

Dante was arrested by FBI agentsat Santa Barbara (Calif.) onJan. 22nd after he failed tosurrender in Tucson (Ariz.) aspreviously agreed to. He hadbeen ordered to report to Ariz-ona authorities where he was tostart a prison term for an at-tempted murder.

The FBI booked Dante intothe Santa Barbara County jail,and charged him with unlawfulflight to avoid prosecution.

Bauman started out as anapprentice horse trainer and gothis first experience in thesteel arena when he saved atrainer who was being mauled bylions. That raw courage won himhis first job as a wild animaltrainer and eventually led tohis feature spot with Ringling-Barnum. Today, he serves as botha tiger trainer and performancedirector .

Charley tells how hetrains his tigers, most of whichhe raises himself. He also tellsabout escaping animals, how hewas gored by an elephant, thewomen in his life and the dailystrain of managing a performanceof the circus.

and a heavy accumulation ofsnow, some 30 members of the J.E. Warner CFA Top attended theopening performance of PolackBros. Circus at Flint (Mich.)on Jan. 17th. The show was pro-duced for the Elf Khurafeh Tem-ple and drew good crowds forits entire run.

III Memoriam

CARL S. SMITH, passed awayat his Auburn, N.Y. home on Jan.13th. He joined the CMB in 1938and was an active member of theorganization and John PawlingRing. The ring quarters were onhis property and many modelmeetings were held there.

His brothers were troupersand worked under the name of theHardy Bros, (jugglers). Theywere with Hagenbeck-Wallace in1914-15 and Barnum & Bailey 1917They also worked in vaudeville.

Survivors include his wife,Ethel, a son Carl, Jr., and hisdaughter Lois Horsman.

Word has it that Mel Sil-verlake, owner of Fisher Bros.Circus, has sold his show toJohn Frazier for the 1976 seasonFans will remember this reporterhad said the McDonald Hamburgerchain was considering the show.Last year some of the Fisher an-imals were on the Frazier showin Canada and the hippo died ontour up there.

Ken "Turtle" Benson willbe on the above show this year.He will be in charge of animalsand doing his juggling act. In'74 he was on Carson & Barneswhen he broke his back and hadto wear a complete body cast -thus gaining the name "turtle."

The Shriners of the North-east Louisiana Shrine Club havebeen thrown a curve by the Mon-roe Civic Center. The Shrinecircus has always been at thecenter in October or November,following the Longhorn Rodeo.Officials talked them into a May1-2 date, so as not to conflictwith the rodeo and now a stockshow and rodeo will be ahead ofthem from Feb. 9 to 14th.

An almost lost art is be-ing revived and that is the Cal-liope. A $35,000 calliope hasbeen built for a new $19 millionsternwheeler "Mississippi Queen"scheduled for completion thisyear. The Oct. 4, 1975 issue of

Suit setMattel, Inc., has asked the

Federal Court at Los Angeles(Ca)for permission to sue its for-mer auditors Arthur Anderson 5,Co. They charge the firm failedto follow accepted accountingpractices in handling the Mattelaudits.

In Aug.' 1974, the SEC fileda complaint against Mattel alleging it had issued false finan-cial statements and reports in1972 and 1973. For fiscal 1975,Mattel took an extraordinaryloss of $16,400,000 for estimat-ed settlement costs of class ac-tion suits filed after the SECcomplaint. A special report pre-pared for Mattel in 1975 charg-ed that the Anderson firm wasnegligent in auditing financialstatements filed in and after1971. Anderson has denied thosecharges.

Mattel's motion to file asuit against Anderson was madein connection with the class ac-tion litigation in Federal courtAnderson also requested courtpermission to crossfile againstMattel, alleging the company andcertain current and former dir-ectors and employees misrepre-sented its financial affairs anddeliberately misled the Andersonfirm. Filing indicated Andersonwill seek punitive damages of$10 million and indemnificationagainst any damages that may beasserted against it for Mattel's'alleged misconduct.

LORIN DAVIS HALL (87) re-tired RBBB contracting agent,died at Sarasota (Fla) on Jan.18th. His show business careergot started in vaudeville in1908. In 1913 he was a part own-er of the Hall-Latlipp Circusand he went on to work for mostof the shows in the country.Survivors include his sons: PaulLorin, Jr., Robert, Scott andPhilip and a daughter, Mrs. Eli-zabeth Kimball.

Mrs. Bette Leonard, a longtime member of the Awards Com-mittee, will be in Sarasota forthe presentations. Mrs. Leonardtrouped with most of the bigname shows, and at one time wasa member of the Flying Zeneros.She now lives in Wichita, Kans.
