Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 1 completed turning over the Seabee's Europe and Africa Naval Construction Force missions to NMCB 133 during a turnover ceremony Feb. 16 on Camp Mitchell, the Seabee camp in Rota.

The change of charge marked the official end of a seven-month deployment for NMCB 1 after a weeklong turnover with NMCB 133. NMCB 133’s deployment to Rota is expected to last approximately seven months.

Cmdr. Kemit Spears, commanding officer, NMCB 1, exchanged salutes with Cmdr., Miguel Dieguez commanding officer, NMCB 133, in the presence of Capt. Joseph Polanin, commander, Naval Expeditionary Task Force Europe and Africa (CTF 68), to signify the official transfer of authority.

“One thirty-three, I want to thank you for a professional turnover. I wish you the absolute best on this next deployment. I know you guys are going to hit it out of the park. I’m thoroughly impressed with every one of your shops and personnel and I can’t thank you for a better turnover,” said Spears to NMCB 1. “I am

very proud of the leadership I’ve seen in you. You guys have represented the great decisions the great sacrifice and the great dedication. You were widely successful, and you’ve honored our heritage everywhere we’ve gone.”

Polanin then expressed his gratitude to NMCB 1 and gave permission to NMCB 133 to raise the bar, which was already set high by the previous unit.

“I hope that you have a wonderful return and reunion with your friends and families and I hope you enjoy some very well earned time off” said Polanin to NCMB 1. “To the new team, the bar has been set extremely high, skipper, permission granted to raise it. I know you’re up to the task.”

The NMCB 133 commander is excited about relieving the NMCB 1 Seabees of their duties and is eager to start creating an even greater standard.

“Our path has been set,” said Dieguez. “To the men and women of NMCB 133 and 22 we are up for the challenge. I’m proud of what we accomplished at homeport. Team Rota,I want to take this opportunity to provide you a little information

on some great young motivators that we have onboard Naval Station Rota. The Service Member of the Year (SMOY) award recognizes our E-6 and below personnel who are doing great things, not only in their respective commands, but also around Naval Station Rota and the local community.

The SMOY award is designed and broken down into two categories, the Senior SMOY (E-5 or E-6) and the

Junior SMOY (E-3 or E-4). It recognizes two of the best all-around service members who excelled in performance, l e a d e r s h i p , s e l f -i m p r o v e m e n t , command/community i n v o l v e m e n t a n d military appearance.These service members continue to demonstrate pride, dedication and courage beyond what is expected. They show concern for their fellow

service members, their community and the country they serve. Many of the candidates are often overlooked and have gone unrecognized. This award absolutely provides us the opportunity to recognize them for their well-deserved accomplishments.

I think one of the most amazing phases is the board process. Each nominee, in their service dress blues or service equivalent uniform, smartly marches into the room and presents themselves to eight command senior enlisted leaders from all services and answers questions on current events, United States and military history, uniform regulations, Uniform Code of Military Justice, chain of command, joint operations and questions that provoke

thought. Every nominee ABSOLUTELY made our jobs very tough in deciding the top candidate to recommend for approval to Capt. Greg Pekari, commander, U.S. Naval Activities Spain, as our choice for Senior and Junior SMOY.

Finally, out of the 1,844 eligible nominees, 11 of them were nominated to go through this board process. I don’t care who you are; being part of that half of a percent of personnel is pretty impressive, not only for them, but also for their leadership, peers, juniors and family. If you happen to see them around make sure you congratulate them on a job extremely well-done. Just being nominated is a major milestone in anyone’s career and for me as well as the other command senior enlisted leaders, it was pretty cool to watch these nominees perform and answer questions not only on their respective service but also from a joint perspective. 212!

To the tenant command leadership of the nominees below, thank you for your support and continue to motivate and train your replacements.

Senior SMOY Nominees: Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Nicole Gacayan, Navy Environmental and Preventive Medicine Unit 7; Tech. Sgt. Wood, 725th Air Mobility Squadron; Sgt. Ortiz, U.S. Army Medical Command; Information Systems Technician 2nd Class Laquisha Cooks, Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic Detatchment Rota; Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class Radames Martinez, Navy Munitions Command; Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Anthonio Oglesby, NAVSTA Rota; Logistics Specialist 2nd Class Darius Grays, Fleet Logistics Support; Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Javier Palacios, U.S. Naval Hospital Rota.

Junior SMOY Nominees: Senior Airman Glover, 725th Air Mobility Squadron; Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 3rd Class Angel Gomez, NAVSTA Rota; Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Casco, U.S. Naval Hospital Rota.

Retired Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Robert J. Walker died peacefully the evening of Feb. 15 surrounded by his wife, Fran, and family members. He was 87.

Walker became the third MCPON Sept. 25, 1975. He relieved John D. Whittet and held the job for four years before Thomas Crow assumed duties in September of 1979.

Walker was born in Baldwin, New York, and joined the Navy at the age of 19 in 1948. He attended radarman "A" school in Boston and was assigned to destroyer USS McKean (DD 784). He served two-year tours aboard the destroyer escorts USS William Seiverling (DE 441) and USS Erben (DD 631).

While aboard Erben, he deployed to the Western Pacific in support of the Korean War. In October 1955, Walker reported to Norfolk as an instructor at radarman "A" school.

Eight years after joining the Navy, Walker was advanced to chief petty officer. In 1961 he was selected for E-8 and two years later for E-9. From 1970 to 1972, he served as the senior enlisted advisor and leading chief for combat systems training at Fleet Combat Direction Systems Training Center, Dam Neck, Virginia.

In 1972, Walker's rating was renamed "Operations Specialist" (OS). In November 1974, Vice Adm. Frederick H. Michaelis, commander, Air Force Atlantic surveyed his master chiefs for the job of master chief petty officer of the force. He selected Walker.

Walker was selected for MCPON in June 1975.During his time in office, he directed chief petty officers toward

what he described as the five "Principles of Professionalism": technical expertise; job skill; leadership; motivation; and personal integrity and responsibility. Leadership was Walker's favorite topic. He believed leadership qualities were learned, not innate qualities and he worked for four years to develop leadership training programs.

As the Navy's senior enlisted Sailor, he instilled leadership training throughout the ranks. Through his efforts, a petty officer indoctrination course became mandatory for all new E-4s. New chiefs were also required to take indoctrination courses. His connection with the other services via their senior enlisted advisors allowed him to gain more quotas for senior and master chiefs at the Army's Sergeants Major Academy and the Air Force's Senior Enlisted Academy. Not content with sending Sailors to other services for leadership training, he initiated a recommendation to create a Navy Senior Enlisted Academy.

As MCPON, Walker demanded a lot from his senior enlisted advisors. In 1977, he re-organized top tier senior enlisted into a Fleet, Force and Command Master Chief program. He also pushed to create the Enlisted Surface Warfare Qualification (ESWS). He believed it promoted professionalism and enhanced the Navy.

"Bob was extremely revered by the force," said current MCPON, Mike Stevens. "He influenced generations of Sailors and profoundly shaped many policies and procedures that our Navy has today and there is no doubt that his legacy will live on in each Sailor who serves our country."

During an interview that he conducted after leaving the MCPON office he shared his thoughts on the Navy.

"I joined the Navy to make it a career," said Walker. "I enjoyed it from the day I joined until the day I retired."

Stevens said the entire Navy mourns the loss of one of the finest leaders the enlisted force has ever known.

"Bob Walker provided sound leadership during difficult times," said Stevens. "He advocated for changes to ensure a more professional enlisted force and opened the lines of communication

throughout the chain of command.Stevens added, "I often tell Sailors that the MCPON's office does not belong to any

one person. It is the Sailors' office and that sentiment is simply something that I'm echoing from Bob's thoughts."

Walker's farewell message in the September 1979 issue of The Direct Line reflects a mood of intense pride in the role he played in the Navy's progress to solid, communicative leadership. His final comments on leadership characterize his tenure:

"Honesty must be a day-to-day example of genuine concern for people, a professional approach to the mission, and the ability to lead and accomplish set goals. Never be afraid to admit mistakes or try new ideas, and by all means, let your subordinates have the opportunity to recommend and become part of the solution.

"There is no place for bigotry or racism in the Navy. We are all Sailors striving to achieve a common goal and that is the continued freedom our great nation enjoys. The most important thing to keep in mind is that the Navy is truly an honorable profession."

Following his retirement on Sept. 28, 1979, Walker worked three years with the Non-Commissioned Officers Association, rising to the position of president. Later he was employed as manager/public relations for the Jonathon Corporation, a ship repair/electronics business in Norfolk.

He is survived by his wife, Fran Walker, of 64 years; his children, Kathy Jones, Linda Campbell, Robert Walker Jr., Teri Rice, and Michael Walker; 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Walker was preceded in death by his daughter Michelle Walker Pfeffer

Aviation Boatswains Mate 2nd Class (AW/EXW) Emmanuel Torres-Reyes is the assistant leading petty officer at the Naval Supply Systems’ (NAVSUP) fuels department, working on maintenance, quality assurance, accounting for fuel during the night and doing maintenance daily with the trucks and polycrafts.

Reyes moved to Rota last year. Prior to living here he was stationed in Norfolk from 2010 until 2015. During part of his time there he worked as an individual augmentee in Djibouti from 2012 until 2013.

After attending Aviation Boatswains Mate “A” school, Reyes also got the chance to attend firefighting, sand blasting, customs and aviation maintenance schools diversifying his skills.

Reyes said he has many collateral duties. “I’m the site ALPO (assistant leading petty officer), the enterprise safety application management system coordinator, there’s too much to count.”

Outside of his military schooling and training he also takes college classes as he works toward getting his bachelor’s degree

for air traffic control.Reyes also finds time between his

collateral duties, daily work and college courses to volunteer as a coach for Morale, Welfare, and Recreation’s youth soccer team, at the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society’s Thrift Shop and Rota’s Animal Welfare League.

Reyes volunteers his time in many ways at work, but he makes sure he still finds time for his family and favorite hobbies.

“My kids, I’m always playing with them, taking them wherever they want to go. I like basketball, I don’t play too often, but I like it,” says Reyes.

Reyes a l so apprec ia tes the commitment to family values his command provides when it comes to family time.

“This is a good command because we have time for family. They focus a lot on family and they really take care of them. You actually can involve your family in this command, they are good for that,” says Reyes.

As far living in Spain he says, “I love the weather, the people, the traffic is awesome. We can travel a lot and there is so much to see."

This past weekend was Valentine’s Day and although some will argue that Valentine’s Day is a manufactured holiday created to compel men to spend money

in an effort to be more romantic, it actually offers a great opportunity for us to consider what the Bible says about the subject of love. While in the English language we use one word to describe a wide range of meanings, in the common Greek language of early church, there were at least four words used to express different types of love; eros (romantic love), storge (love within a family), phileo (general love for friends and others) and agape. Of these, agape is the most important and the most uniquely Christian.

Outside of the New Testament, the word agape is used in a variety of contexts, but in the New Testament it takes on a distinct meaning. Agape is used to describe the unconditional

love that is of and from God, whose very nature is love itself. “God is love. God does not merely love, He is love itself. Everything God does flows from His love.” (1 John 4:8)

The type of love that characterizes God is not a sappy, sentimental feeling such as we often hear portrayed. God loves because that is His nature and the expression of His being. He loves the unlovable and the unlovely, not because we deserve to be

loved or because of any excellence we possess, but because it is His nature to love and He must be true to His nature.

God’s love is displayed most clearly at the cross where “God demonstrates his own love for us in this; while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) God’s agape love is unmerited, gracious, and constantly seeking the benefit of the ones He loves. The Bible says we are the undeserving recipients of His lavish agape love (1 John 3:1). God’s demonstration of agape love led to the sacrifice of the Son of God for those He loves.

As a result of God’s love for us, we are to love others with agape love, whether they are fellow believers (John 13:34) or bitter enemies (Matthew 5:44). Jesus gave the parable of the good samaritan as an example of sacrifice for the sake of others, even for those who may care nothing at all for us. Agape love as modeled by Christ is not based on a feeling; rather, it is a determined act of the will, a joyful resolve to put the welfare of others above our own.

Agape love does not come naturally to us. Because of our fallen nature, we are incapable of producing such a love on our own. If we are to love as God loves, that love can only come from its source. This is the love that “has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us” when we became His children (Romans 5:5; cf. Galatians 5:22). “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters” (1 John 3:16). Because of God’s love toward us, we are able to love one another.

So, even though Valentine’s Day has passed, don’t forget about God’s unconditional love for you and look for opportunities to share that love with others each and everyday.

Love As God Does All Yearlong

They are acknowledged for their academic responsibility, respect and honesty in all that they do. Principal Mohan Vaswani spoke to the students in his address to the middle school crowd stating that the overseas experience makes the students different from stateside peers in a good way.

The thought of quitting smokeless tobacco forever might be overwhelming, but could you give it up for just 24 hours? The Great American Spit out is being observed on Feb. 18 this year. Chewing tobacco, snuff, snus and other products have three times the amount of nicotine than cigarettes. Any form of tobacco use is dangerous and increases the users’ susceptibility to oral cancer. There are many reasons to stop using smokeless tobacco. Here are just a few:

• Smokeless tobacco is not a safe alternative to smoking. Smokeless tobacco leads to serious health risks, including cancer of the mouth, tongue, throat and pancreas, gum disease, tooth decay and heart disease.

• Quitting can save you money! Visit www.Ucanquit2.org and use the cost savings calculator to determine how much you could save by quitting smokeless tobacco and begin to imagine all the ways you could spend your

extra cash.• Your significant other will no longer think kissing you is gross.

• Brighter teeth and fresher breath.• Improved readiness. Among many other benefits, you will be

faster and have better endurance thanks to your increased lung capacity, experience less injuries and illness and have improved night vision.

Quitting tobacco is not easy, but there are many resources and programs that can help you, your family and friends to quit tobacco. It is never too late to quit. The U.S. Naval Hospital Rota Health Promotions department offers weekly tobacco cessation classes on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to noon or you can schedule an individual session at a convenient time for you.

Naval Station Rota got the chance to experience the music of American Country Music Awards’ New Male Vocalist nominee Brett Eldredge Feb. 11.

Eldredge said this stop was one of his favorites so far on his tour.

American Forces Network Detachment Rota had a chance to sit down and interview Eldredge and he couldn’t express enough how excited he was to be here for the troops.

“This is my first time coming overseas. I’ve played a lot of shows back in the states for military crowds, but this is my first time over here. So I get to join ya’ll and play music. The crowds are so passionate and it’s so wild. It’s nice after playing arenas to come and have an intimate crowd of 300 or however many, they are so passionate,” says Eldredge.

The concert is hosted by the Navy Entertainment Program, which provides quality, l ive entertainment for Sailors stationed overseas and on deployed ships at sea.

Anastasia Martin, who attended the concert, said she really appreciated this concert.

“Brett Eldredge put on a wonderful concert. It was very interactive and personal because I was able to get so close to the stage and people were getting fist bumps,

hand shakes and afterward we even got to do a meet and greet,” says Martin.

Martin went on to explain that events like this are great because they bring the act to you.

“Instead of figuring out when and how to fly back to the states and go to a concert, I was able to stop by La Plaza before the weekend started and enjoy the concert. I didn’t have to buy a plane ticket or a concert ticket for that matter. It’s a great way to feel the appreciation for what I’m doing here.”

Eldredge couldn’t thank the crowd enough for everything that they do, from being away from family and home to protecting our country.

Eldredge, a Paris, Illinois native, has three number one singles from his debut album Bring You Back: "Don't Ya", "Beat of the Music" and "Mean to Me.” He performed these songs along with others during his hour and a half performance.

After his performance Eldredge held meet and greet sessions where fans could pose with him for a photo and thank him for performing.

Eldredge is the first of many performers coming to Naval Station Rota, with The Frontmen of Country Music coming Feb. 29.

Let'sEat!

This week we want to cook and share with you this tasty stew with white kidney beans and Chorizo. Stews are a comforting meal during the chilly winter months. You will see how tasty and how easy they are to prepare. There are many types of Stew in the Spanish cuisine, but this is one of our favorites at home. You can also cook it with clams, with chickpeas, meat, fish,…anyway you cook it, it will be delicious.

INGREDIENTS• 18 oz. white kidney beans• 1 head garlic, without the

outer skin• 1 potato, peeled and

diced• 1 onion

• 2 red tomatoes, without the skin

• 1 green pepper, cut into medium size pieces

• 2 bay leaves• 4 oz. olive oil• 2 spoonfuls of sweet

pepper (when possible pimentón from the Vera area)

• 1 piece of Chorizo (Spanish sausage)

• * Salt• * Ground Black pepper

TO PREPARE• Put the beans in a bowl with cold water

the night before so that they get softer and ready to be cooked.

• In a pot, add the beans and cover with water and besides all the other ingredients: the potato, the onion, the head garlic, the green pepper, the tomatoes, the piece of Chorizo, the bay leaves, ground black pepper, half a cup of oil, pepper and salt.

• If you use a normal pot it will cook for 60

minutes and if you use a pressure cooker it will cook for 20 minutes.

• Once the time is over, remove the garlic head after giving the stew a great garlic flavor.

• Then remove the tomatoes, onion and pepper. Mash them and pour it in. Leave the potato pieces in the stew.

• We add them back to the stew and let them cook for a few more minutes so that the flavors blend.
