What Happened To The Cornerstone In My Email?Well, after observing how other magazines (McCalls, Martha Stewart Living, even the Oak Hill Gazette) are presented online, Page Gordon (your’s truly) felt that Oak Hill UMC needed to take advan-tage of modern technology and “get with the program”, so to speak. And with Pastor Stella’s ok, I set to work finding just how to present the Cornerstone functionally, attractively and at little or no cost. I decided to use the online service “Issuu”, because they offered great op-tions and hosting at the lowest cost to us. Use is free, but read-ers must put up with small ads for other magazines. I’ve set

the ads to be common, not offensive titles. If you need to print the Cornerstone, Issuu requires that you join, but please email me at [email protected] for a printable copy, or pick up a hard copy in the Narthex or the church office.

YOur TrusTEEs aT WOrkThe Trustees in cooperation with the Facility Administrator undertook three projects in January. The underground fire alarm cable to the Sanctuary was malfunctioning, such that the fire station was receiving false alarms. The cable along with a faulty relay was replaced in January using Trustee funds from 2012.

Trustee funds from 2012 also were used to purchase an additional heat pump for Fellowship Hall. The

Fellowship Hall originally had three heat pumps. When one failed several years ago, it was not replaced; however the two remaining heat pumps are inadequate for large groups during hot weather. The Facility Administrator purchased the new heat pump on eBay and installed it with assistance from Bill Duke for less than $3,000. Yes, Chuck Moore has an EPA license to work on heat pumps. In their continuing effort to control the cost of electrical energy for Oak Hill UMC, the Trustees and Facility Administrator relocated the thermostats in the Missions Building. The thermostats originally were in the hall and a closet of the Missions Building, which areas had no vents or return registers. Moving the thermostats into occupied rooms provides for greater comfort for those using the Missions Building, including our IHN guests. Additionally the air conditioning units now can operate more efficiently and therefore use less electrical energy.

Name Tag folder surprise! You never know what you might find in your name tag folder! The other day I found a beautiful note pad (with initial M on it so can’t be for Al) in my folder. It is purse-size and decorated with fancy décor. I will have fun using it. I wish I could thank the person who left it, but hope they’ll read this and know that I am grateful. Everyone should check their folders each week. You never know what you might find – and while you are at it, you may as well put that name tag on!! Margaret Jones (aka The Name Tag Nag)

A mission trip to Haiti has been scheduled through United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) on April 6-13, 2013, which is one week after Easter. (Easter is March 31, 2013.) Haiti is still recovering from the devastat-ing earthquake that occurred on January 12, 2010. UMVIM, in collaboration with Eglise Methodiste d’Haiti, is entering the third and final year of its Haiti Response Plan. The Plan has identified priority projects for earthquake recovery and other church and social needs that can be addressed by UMVIM teams. While priority projects have focused on construction, other opportuni-ties to be involved in the local communities exist, such as English as a second language, music, working with children, and computer training. UMVIM’s theme is Christian Love in Action, which says it all. This is a wonderful opportunity to participate in a ministry of recon-ciliation by moving yourself and others closer to glorifying God. The team will be led by Jon Nelson, who went to Haiti in February 2011 and April 2012. For more information, please contact Jon at 512-288-2764 or by email at [email protected].

Oak Hill uMC, What Do You see?

Lent is a 40-day period during which we learn to see what God would have us see – whether that means looking around, looking inside ourselves, or looking beyond. You are invited into the spiritual discipline of paying of attention with this challenge: Each day of Lent, we will present a word. You will be invited to look

for and share how you perceive this word in the world. Take a picture and share it on Oak Hill UMC’s Facebook wall or on Twitter with #ohumcsee. If you would like to receive daily reminders with the day’s word, text 415-6708 or e-mail [email protected].

shrove Tuesday Pancake supperfebruary 12, 2013

Rev. Stella Burkhalter, associate pastor at Oak Hill U.M.C. in

Austin felt the call to offer ashes to evening commuters at the Oak Hill “Y” where hwys 290 and 71 meet. Earlier that day she had seen others

doing the same on 6th street in downtown Austin.

Thanks to everyone for helping to make the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper such wonderful fun and a big success!

To: All AgentsFrom: MPKids HeadquartersRe: Your Top-Secret March Mission

Our March mission will be to join CROP Walk and that will count for our March meeting. We will not meet on March 10, as is the regular schedule, but instead join the other walkers from OHUMC on March 3 at 1:45 at Camp Mabry. I hope that you will all join Agent Madision, me, Mr. Mark and Agent Eleanor in walking to raise money and aware-ness for world hunger. Our GLOW friends (Mission Possible Kids in training :-) will be invited to join us as well.

CROP Hunger Walks help children and families worldwide – including here in the U.S. – to have food for today, while building for a better tomor-row. If you would like to join the Oak Hill UMC team as a Walker, just go to our team page using the link below, then click the “Join Team” link next to the team’s name. Together we can be part of the solution!

You won’t want

to miss it! The Lock-In will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 22 and end at 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 23. The cost  will be $35/person or $60/2 or more in the same family. Music & Drama Camp 2013MaD Camp will be July 8-12 and July 15-19, with performances on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20.  This year, we will arrive at 8:30 each day and end at 12:30. This will give us time to gather and warm up each day without cutting into our rehearsal time. We will have Before Care and Care Camp in the afternoon for those who need it.  This year’s show is “Life School Musical”, a Christian themed take off on “High School Musical”. It’s a lot of fun with upbeat music and a great message. MaD Camp is open to all kids finishing 1st-8th grades and friends are always welcome! More detailed information and registration forms will be available beginning March 1.

Paisley May Lintz was baptized on February 10, 2013 at the 8:45 a.m. service. Her parents are Wade and Julie Lintz.

When Miss Knowsalot’s class at Life School begins on this particular Friday, the students have no idea what a special day it is destined to be! While all they can think of when class starts is the impending

weekend, by the end of this delightful romp they have come face to face with the life-changing power of the Gospel, and they’ve been

handed the “keys to life” by some very special characters. Not only will the music grab their attention, but the Biblical truths in the story can

change their lives!

EaGLE QuEsT - WILDErNEssHigh school spring Break Trip

Camp Eagle - March 8-12

We will be headed into the Hill Country Wilderness near Rocksprings, Texas out at Camp Eagle for an “Eagle Quest” with our friends at Dripping Springs UMC! This retreat is for students in 9th-12th grades.

Purpose: Going on trail is the perfect way to leave distractions behind and focus your group. On trail your students will come out of their shells simply because the shells we all carry around in our day-to-day lives won’t fit in their backpacks. Trail brings out the true self, enabling students to grow and knitting groups together.

Description: This is the classic Eagle Quest (EQ) experience in that most groups go on trail. This track is completely customized for your group but there are certain things to look forward to. Most groups spend their first night at the EQ base camp where we prepare gear, and prepare the group to go on trail. The majority of the trip is spent on trail where you’re backpacking through the Camp Eagle backcountry

with just your group. Throughout each day you’re doing activities, each designed for a specific purpose. Finally you come off trail and celebrate what you’ve accomplished. This trip is especially suited for high school campers and leadership groups.

Total Cost for Trip: $250.00 (Deposit due by Sunday February 17.)

We will be leaving from Oak Hill on Friday, March 8 at 5 p.m. and re-turning around noon on Tuesday, March 12th. We have limited space, so it is important to sign up as soon as possible. A $125.00 deposit, due by February 17th, will reserve a spot for you on our trip. If there are a couple of adults out there interested in going, I’ll pay your way, so let me know! Contact me, Dave Stewart, at [email protected].

Eagle Quest is a small group, experience based backpacking program. We believe in the power of experiential education. An activity like backpacking or rock climbing is a means to developing the group and individual. We use outdoor adventure and small community living to teach students valuable life lessons. Our purpose is to inspire Christ-like change through outdoor adventure, authentic relationships, and biblical truth.

CrOP WaLk sunday, March 3

1:45 p.m. - Camp MabryThis is a great event to get the whole family in-volved in and is now much closer to the church. Our goal is to raise $2013 in 2013. Contact Madison or Ryan Wright to join the Oak Hill UMC team at [email protected] or 512-698-4088. You can also join online at http://hunger.cwsglobal.org/goto/OHUMC13.
