As kids leave, ask them why they created passports, and how they want to change the world!

Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together.

Connect before you correct! When it becomes necessary to discipline kids because of their behavior, connect with them on a personal level before you correct them. Building relationships with kids is the most important, and effective, part of managing their behavior.

Today we’re hearing about one of Jesus’ most well-known sermons: the Sermon on the Mount! But instead of just focusing on what he said, we’ll focus on what he DID afterward. We’ll see how Jesus met people up close and personal, and gave them the kind of comfort that only God can provide.

Jesus was obsessed with loving others.Matthew 8

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away, while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they’re going to hear.

CLOTHES PIN TAG● Give each kid 4 clothes pins, and have them pin them to their shirt sleeves, pants,

pockets, shoes, etc. They must be visible, not hidden!● Let kids scatter all over the room. On the leader’s signal, everyone runs around and

tries to collect as many clothespins from the other kids as they can!● When you get someone’s else’s clothespin, you have to kneel on the ground while

you attach the new clothespin to yourself.● After 5 minutes of playing tag, the one with the most clothespins wins!● Play as many rounds as you have time for, and redistribute the clothespins each

time (4 per kid).● If you have a small space (or if you just want a different challenge), instead of

running, have kids crawl, walk on their knees, walk backwards, walk sideways, hop on one leg, etc. This will slow kids down a bit, and make it sillier!

● Tip: Set expectations and tell kids that they should not hurt each other in any way when trying to get clothespins, and should respect people’s space.

Before you go to Large Group, you can ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader’s instructions.

Today is the first lesson of the “Obsessed” Journey! Today’s main point is that Jesus was obsessed with loving others, and he showed it through his actions every day!

*You’ll need white paper and markers for each kid at the end of Large Group today.

Here’s a link to God’s Story / Sermon on the Mount:

*Click to play intro music.● Welcome: Hey, welcome to Kids’ Club! We’re glad to have

you here! I have a question. Raise your hand if you want to have a boring life, and not really do anything out of your comfort zone. (Let kids respond.) No? Nobody? Okay, raise your hand if you want to have an adventure-filled life that’s full of amazing surprises?! (Let kids respond.) Me too!

● (Image: Passport) For the next 5 weeks, Kids’ Club and all of Crossroads is going on a journey together. Does anyone know what this picture is? (Let kids answer.)

● Say: It’s a passport, which is a book you have with you if you want to travel around the world! Today we’ll make one of our own, because we’re going to explore this amazing adventure that Jesus wants to take us on. He doesn’t just want us to sit at home and do nothing. He wants us to get out of our comfort zone, and actually change the world!

● Ask: Before we get into that more, what was your favorite part of Connect Time? (Let kids respond.) Raise your hand if you won and collected the most clothespins? Would you tell us your strategy for winning? How did you collect more than everybody else? (Let kids respond.)

● Say: You had to focus really hard, and be fast and sneaky! You had to be obsessed with collecting everyone’s clothespins, no matter who got in your way!

OBSESSED JOURNEY

Main Goal: Introduce the Journey and how Jesus wants to take us on an amazing adventure!

CONNECT TIME REVIEW

Main Goal: Review Connect Time and actively worship.

Page 4: February 17-18, 2018 Obsessed Journey: Sermon on the Mount ...49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/upl… · things do you wish you could change? For example,

OBSESSION: WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Main Goal: Discuss what obsession is, and what it looks like in our own lives.

WHAT ARE YOU OBSESSED WITH?

Main Goal: Do a short activity to get kids thinking about what they’re obsessed with.

THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT

Main Goal: Show kids where Jesus preached, and help them visualize Galilee.

● Ask: Now let’s imagine you’re playing that game, but you’re NOT obsessed with winning, and you just walk really slowly, and don’t ever bother collecting clothespins. What would happen? (Let kids respond.) You’d never win!

● Ask: What does it mean to be obsessed with something? (Let kids respond.) Yep, it’s when you devote all your energy, time and attention to it! You can’t stop thinking about it, and you talk about it all the time!

● Say: Let’s watch a clip and see what the main character, Miguel, is obsessed with...

● Video: Coco / Miguel Loves Music● Say: So what was Miguel obsessed with, even though his

family hated it? (Let kids respond.) Yep, he loved music! In fact, he spends the movie learning to play guitar and do everything he possibly can to become a great musician.

● Say: Right now, everyone get into groups of 3 or 4. You’ll ask each other a question, but you have to act out your answer, with NO words, before you tell your group. Got it? Okay, here’s the question: What’s something that you’re obsessed with? You’ve got 3-4 minutes. Go! (Let kids respond and give them 3-4 minutes to act and discuss.)

● Say: Okay, times up! We ALL love different things. And when we’re obsessed and love something sooo much, we give lots of time and energy to it. We talk about it with others, and we spend lots of time doing it, right?

● Ask: Well I’ve got another question for you: What things do you think Jesus was obsessed with? (Let a few kids answer.) Great answers!

● Say: Today, we’re going to hear about what Jesus was obsessed with, and we’re starting in a place called Galilee. Galilee was a town where Jesus and his disciples traveled, and one day, he decided to preach on a hill, or mount.

● (Loop: Mount of Beatitudes) This is the actual hill that Jesus stood on when he preached! It’s still there, right next to the Sea of Galilee.

● Say: We’re going to watch a video to see what Jesus preached about, and find out what kind of things Jesus was obsessed with. Pay attention to what he tells people to do, but even more importantly, pay attention to what he actually DOES after he preaches!

Page 5: February 17-18, 2018 Obsessed Journey: Sermon on the Mount ...49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/upl… · things do you wish you could change? For example,

WHAT WAS JESUS OBSESSED WITH?

Main Goal: Understand why Jesus showed loved, and how he was obsessed with doing it all the time!

WE CAN LOVE LIKE JESUS

Main Goal: Understand that we can change the world by loving others like Jesus did.

● Video: God’s Story / Sermon on the Mount● Say: After hearing what Jesus talked about on the mount,

and seeing all the things he did for people afterward, what would you say he’s obsessed with? (Let kids respond.)

● Say: Basically, he was obsessed with loving others. After watching that video, HOW can you tell he was obsessed with loving people? (Let kids respond.) Yep, he spent all his time talking about how to love people! And then he went out and actually showed love in all kinds of ways!

● Say: Remember, Jesus was God’s son. He came here to rescue us from all the wrong things in the world, and one of the ways he did that was by loving people with his words and his actions. He never stopped doing it, no matter how tired he got, or how busy he was. He was obsessed! And it changed the world forever.

● Ask: So what does this mean for us? What do you think could happen if we started being OBSESSED with showing love like Jesus? How would the world look if we loved people no matter who they are, or where they come from, or what they need? (Let kids respond.)

● Say: We can actually change the world by loving others. But not just by loving sometimes, or when we feel like it. We have to be completely obsessed with it, and spend time and energy on it, just like we do with other things we’re obsessed with.

● Say: Think about it. What if you were as obsessed with loving others as you are with video games, or sports, or art, or music? Do you think you could make a difference? (Let kids respond.) Yes! Let’s check out Kid President, and see what he says about how we can change the world.

● Video: Kid President / How to Change the World● Ask: He had some pretty good advice! We don’t have to be

powerful, or rich, or mean to change all the broken things in the world. We can start with ourselves, right where we are.

● Ask: Do you think we’ll ever come up against things that seem impossible to defeat, or people that seem impossible to love? Yep, we sure will. But that’s no reason to give up. Let’s read a verse about this:

● Slide: Matthew 19:26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With people, this is impossible. But with God, all things are possible.

Page 6: February 17-18, 2018 Obsessed Journey: Sermon on the Mount ...49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/upl… · things do you wish you could change? For example,

RESPONSE TIME AND WORSHIP

Main Goal: Let kids actively respond to the Holy Spirit. Close the lesson with prayer and worship.

● Say: Right now, think of some ways you wish you could change the world, but that you feel like you can’t do on your own. It could be ANYTHING, the sky’s the limit! What do you see in the world, that you wish could be different? What things do you wish you could change? For example, I want to _______ (Give a personal example to help kids imagine.)

● Say: Right now you’ll get a piece of paper and a marker. As we play this worship video, spread out and get some space on the ground, and start writing down your ideas. As you do that, ask God to help you do those things, no matter how big or impossible they seem. At any point, feel free to get up and worship God with singing, dancing, or whatever you feel is right!

● Music Video: Love Won’t Let Me Down● Pray: Jesus, we want to be like you. We want to love

people no matter what, but we need your help to do it. We trust and love you. Thanks you for meeting us today. Amen!

● Remind kids to take their worship papers to Small Group.*

Dismiss kids to small groups.

Goal: Kids will (1) recognize that Jesus was obsessed with loving people, and (2) identify how we can be obsessed with the same thing!

Why? It’s important to understand that Jesus healed people and performed miracles not just to fix physical problems, but to help comfort and heal people emotionally as well!

Tip: Kids will need to share staplers, and may need you to demonstrate how to staple the “binding” of the passport book.

REVIEW THE STORY1. Have kids share what they wrote down during Large Group worship.2. What’s one thing you’re obsessed with? How do you show it?3. What was Jesus obsessed with, and how did he show it?4. When is hard for you to love people? When is it easy?5. What else do you think Jesus liked to do? (Let kids imagine, anything goes!)6. What are some real life ways you can change the world right now?

MAKE IT PERSONAL● Tell kids we’re going to make passports to tie into how we’re going on a Journey for

the next 5 weeks, and explore how we can have a huge impact on the world as followers of Jesus!

● Give each kid two passport pages: one blue and one white.● Tell kids to layer their two pages:

○ Put the blue page on bottom, with the logo facing down. ○ Put the white page on top, with the verse side facing up. ○ Fold the pages in half to form a “book”.○ Staple twice along the binding (kids will have to take turns).

● Hand out markers, pens and stamps. ○ Have kids open up to the first page and draw a portrait of themselves in the

blank square (if they want), and fill in their name and information. ○ Tell kids to fill in this answer: What’s one thing I want to change about the

world?○ Let kids share the passport stamps and fill their books with stamps.

● Make sure to read the verse together (have one kid volunteer to read if you want).(Continued on next page.)

Extra time? Play “Would you rather?” Have kids gather in an open area, and answer the following questions by moving to one side of the room (Make sure to point to the side of the room that goes with each choice.)

“Would you rather...”● Travel to Europe or Asia?● Live on a tropical island, or up in the mountains?● Fy in a plane, or ride in a boat?● Travel in space, or travel in a submarine into the deep ocean?● Make up your own!
