Pastor’s Corner My dear Parishioners, This Wednesday, Feb. 26th is Ash Wednesday & the beginning of the Season of Lent. The liturgical schedule for the day is as follows:
8:00 AM Mass 12:05 Noon Mass 7:00 PM Mass
The Gospel for Ash Wednesday gives us good advice on how we are to enter into the “spirit” of Lent. Jesus speaks to us of the three disciplines of: praying, fasting & giving alms. All of these, Jesus teaches us, are to be done without desire for any recognition. The point is not that we should only pray alone & not in community, for example, but that we should not pray in order to be seen as holy. The same is true of fasting & works of charity; they do not need to be hidden, but they are to be done sincerely out of love of God & neighbor, and again, not in order to be seen by others. There is a certain irony in the Gospel which tells us to wash our faces so that we do not appear to be doing penance on a day that we go around placing “dirt” on our foreheads. This is just another way Jesus is telling us not to perform religious acts for public recognition. We don't wear these ashes to proclaim our holiness but to humbly acknowledge that we are simply a community of sinners in need of repentance and renewal.
As a reminder, abstinence from all meat is to be observed by all Roman Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays in Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Roman Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. (Usually this means only one full meal that day and two much smaller ones.)
I pray that this coming season of Lent will be an opportunity for all of us to use wisely the tra-ditional practices of Lent to bring about a true renewal in us; sincere repentance, true conver-sion of heart and an increase in works of charity in our daily lives. May God continue to bless you during this Holy Season.
Love and prayers, Fr. Carey
