Heads Up! Five shortlisted Headteacher candidates have been invited for interview on Wednesday February 19th, with

successful candidates going on to a second day on the 20th. With panel interviews, lesson observations,

presentations to staff and a ‘Students’ Speed Panel’, governors hope to be able to appoint the right candidate

to take the school successfully to the next stage of its development.

www.saferinternet.org.uk where they have some really good suggestions about how to manage your child’s

safety online – especially with regard to social media sites.

We take seriously our responsibility for keeping students ‘esavvy’ and safe in school, and know you will work

with us by taking up that responsibility at home. Some of our Key Stage 3 students put together some great

If your son or daughter has lost anything, please encourage them to pop down to the Key Stage 3 Hub and have a rummage. How can they not miss their blazer or a PE kit? There are also trainers, designer label hoodies, umberellas and coats. If they do not claim their items they will be destroyed at half term. Smaller items can be reclaimed from either Mrs Harrison (Library) or Mrs Hey (Key Stage 3 Administrator).

Readathon 2014 Year 7 parents (hopefully) now know we are running Readathon from 7th February to 7th March this year. This is a national sponsored event in aid of children’s charities. Even more importantly, it is about getting children to read – and read anything they enjoy: fiction, non-fiction, magazines, even computer manuals, whatever they like. They can read as many or as few books/magazines as they feel able to, there is no test at the end – the main aim is to have fun reading. There is an IGS suggested reading list which may help them to choose an appropriate title. 75 new books have been purchased especially for Readathon – it would be great to see them all taken out at least once! Please support this event and encourage your son/daughter (or both!) to read as much as they can, and as much as they want, and to enjoy themselves doing so.

Sharing Success Congratulations to Emma Powell (8JP) who competed in the 2014 World Youth Ice Climbing Championships, Champagny-en-Vanoise, France at the weekend 7/8th February. Climbers from ten member federations participated in the event. Emma was there representing the GB team, and came 3rd; this means Emma is now ranked 3rd in the world in the Youth Ice World Cup in the under 16s category.

Well done to our U14A netball team who beat Skipton emphatically 18-8 on Tuesday. Player of the Match honours went to Eleanor Pilling (9JLF) U14 captain leading by example! The Year 7 team also played but weren’t as successful; player of the match went to both Emily Dover (7HED/KE) and Caitlin Ives (7DSF) (U12).

Congratulations to our Year 7 and the Year 8 girls who won the Sports Hall Athletics Bradford Final on Tuesday afternoon! They all enjoyed the competition and were very pleased to be rewarded for their hard work. Well done to all the girls; they will go to the West Yorkshire Finals next month. Good luck! Well done to our Year 8 rugby team (which included 3 Year 7s) who played Rodillian Academy on Wednesday night, in the horrendous wind and rain!

They braved the conditions and played some great rugby, narrowly losing 20-17. Great effort boys!

Congratulations to our selected team of cross country runners who ran at Aireville Park, Skipton on Monday afternoon in the annual invitational race held by Ermysted's Grammar School. Well done to Danny Leach (7HED/KE), Jonathon Kelly (7PB), Matthew Elston (7MPC) and Alfie White (7LG) also known as the ‘Cryptanalysers’ who have won a prize in the nationwide Alan Turing Cryptography Competition. Many teams of students from across Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 are currently taking part in the nationwide Alan Turing Cryptography Competition run by the University of Manchester. The competition comprises of trying to crack a different cypher which is released each week for 6 weeks. Congratulations are in order to team Cryptanalysers; these four Year 7 mathematicians won a spot prize of a £10 Amazon voucher each for their solution! We wish all the rest of the competing teams well for the remaining three cyphers.

The Readathon Reading Tree is bursting into leaf! Well done to all the Year 7s who have been reading and writing reviews for Readathon! There have been some really good comments – the aim is to have a full tree.

Neck and Nominate or NekNomination You may have heard or read about this latest social media craze which has been circulating globally since its origins in Australia, but has now resulted in two deaths. ‘Neck and Nominate’ involves a person being nominated by a ‘friend’ to drink an alcoholic cocktail which contains various ingredients, and they produce a video which is posted online. This then earns the candidate the ‘right to nominate’ the next person who should try to improve upon the previous attempt, which means that the cocktails and scenarios become increasingly more complex, and potentially more dangerous. Word of this craze has now reached Ilkley and I am concerned that there may be students who find themselves nominated and therefore, as a consequence, may feel they have to complete this challenge. My ultimate concern is that nominated individuals may be under a huge amount of pressure from their peers to complete the task. Students in Years 10-11 are particularly of an age whereby they feel compelled to follow through as they do not want to lose face with their peers, and therefore may subsequently nominate others from within their peer group to take the next challenge. Following the death of a 19 year old in Ireland, Joe Byrne, an SDLP Assembly member for West Tyrone, said: ’This is not a game. It is destroying lives. I would call on people to take these concerns seriously and look after their health and wellbeing by not participating, and to protect their friends from the serious risks associated with it by not nominating them.’ There was further recent media coverage of a man from Plymouth who chose to refuse to take part when he was nominated. In his video post, he said: ‘Cheers for the nomination. To be honest, I’ve seen it all now on the internet.’ He added: ‘I am not one for not getting involved, but it’s now getting a bit out of hand and for me to be able to do anything that’s going to create lots of likes, I’ll have to do something that’s probably going to hurt me.’ This response has earned the man a great deal of praise from followers online and is an approach that we need to promote as being a positive response to the challenge – something that may be easier for a Post-16 student or an adult than for a younger person. We appreciate your support in talking to your child regarding the dangers of this game.

Parent Governor Election The ballot for the two parent Governor vacancies is underway with a cut off point for votes of 12 noon on Monday 17th February 2014. Voting is on the basis of one ballot form per parent/carer; you may vote for two nominees, as there are two vacancies. Each parent/carer can return only one completed ballot form, irrespective of the number of his or her children attending the school. All completed ballot papers should be returned to Reception. Please place your completed ballot paper in an unmarked envelope and then place this unmarked envelope into a second envelope. Please mark this envelope with Parent Election and include your name. This double envelope process will ensure your vote is confidential and only one vote per parent/carer is received. Any returns received after 12 noon on Monday 17th February 2014 will not be counted.

The website now contains: the insurance form; the repair process; guidelines to screen time management and frequently asked questions. In September of each year, every student will start with a clean slate and any breakages that year will be covered by the scheme. Year 9 Art Work A group of Year 9 students have recently enjoyed the thrill of seeing their artwork displayed within school. The group of artists who started their work in Year 8, used their iPads to capture images, simplify them, and then turn them into large vibrant artworks, a great marriage of technology meets artistry, The pictures are high impact and are currently on display in an area where Key Stage 3 students can view and enjoy them at break and lunchtime.

World Book Day: Stop Everything and Read! World Book Day is a celebration of books and reading. Designated by UNESCO, reading is being marked by over 100 countries all over the world and we at IGS are doing our bit! Every student gets a £1.00 book token which they can take to participating book shops to exchange for one of two free books. There is a World Book Day website with a range of games and online resources and all our Year 7 students are taking part in the Readathon.

We would like the impact of the day to be felt in our classrooms too so we are holding our first ‘Stop Everything and Read’ event during period 3 on the 6th March. We are asking that Curriculum Areas see this as an opportunity to promote ‘wider reading’ in their subject areas and choose some interesting and relevant material to act as a stimulus for discussion: it could be a newspaper or magazine article, a poem, an extract from a novel, an academic article…..whatever fits in and would add even more interest to your current studies.

Expedition India In the weeks after the summer exams I know many of Year 13 will be heading off on holidays to celebrate the end of school. For me this will involve spending 5 weeks in Ladakh, in Northern India. Ladakh lies between some of the world’s most spectacular mountain ranges, the Indian Himalayas and the Karakorum. The expedition is organised by the British Exploring Society and will involve living and trekking through a remote mountain environment, as well as participating in a number of research projects. These projects will focus on collecting and processing data to help increasing our understanding of the geology, meteorology and ecology of the Ladakh region. I will be gathering data from the world’s 3rd highest weather station and investigating the area’s glacial and geomorphological history. Over the last few months I have been busy working and trying to raise money to fund this expedition. Last November I completed a 51 mile sponsored walk along the Lancashire Witches Way, which runs from Barrowford near Colne to Lancaster. This is a long distance path set up to mark the 400th anniversary of the trial and execution of the Lancashire Witches. My most recent project has been designing and making a series of cards to sell. I finally got these printed last week and now they are ready for sale. So if anyone is interested in supporting me by buying some cards please let me know. LS29 Support Group for Children with Special Needs

57 Days to Go! Our very own marathon man, Tim Milburn, is concentrating his efforts for his upcoming entry in the London Marathon. Tim is more familiar with running the school council and running after his Year 8 students, not sure just how that will help when it comes to pounding the streets on London on April 13th? Tim is raising money for ‘Get Kids Going’ a National charity which gives disabled children and young people, up to the age of 26, the wonderful opportunity of participating in sport. We provide them with specially built sports wheelchairs so they can do: athletics, marathons, tennis, skiing, rugby, sailing, boccia, basketball, sledge hockey, table tennis, fencing, shooting, archery, powerlifting and many other sports. To help him raise the £2500 he needs some of our student basketballers are challenging Tim and a team of teachers to a match (it won’t be pretty!) there will be plenty of other fundraising opportunities to look out for. GCSE Overview

Career of the Week: Chef The Work: chefs prepare food using a variety of cooking methods. In large kitchens they work as part of a team and look after one food area like bread and pastries or vegetables. The head chef runs the entire kitchen. Your main tasks would include:

Preparing, cooking and presenting food in line with required standards

Keeping preparation at the right level

Making sure that food is served promptly

Monitoring food production, ensuring consistent quality and portion size

Stock control

Following relevant hygiene, health and safety guidelines Entry Requirements: you would usually start as a kitchen assistant or trainee chef (also known as commis chef). At this level you would spend time in each area of the kitchen, learning a range of skills and how to look after kitchen equipment. You may not need any academic qualifications to work as a trainee chef, some employers will prefer you to have a good general education including GCSEs in Maths and English. You could prepare for working in this industry by taking a part time or full time course at college. Apprenticeships are also widely available as a way in. Training and Development: college courses at Level 2 will take 1 year and Apprenticeships are usually for about 2-3 years. Once working you will receive induction training and work under the supervision of experienced staff. Your employer may encourage you to take further qualifications such as: Level 3 (NVQ) Diploma in Professional Cookery, Level 3 Award in supervising food safety in catering etc. See UCAS Progress website below. Pay: trainee (commis) chefs may start on a salary of around £13,000 per annum. Section chefs (chef de partie) can earn up to £16,000 a year, second chefs (sous chef) can earn up to £22,000 and head chefs (chefs de cuisine) can earn up to £30,000 a year.
