MUSINGS FROM THE DEACON CAVE
Learning a New Language Okay men, here is your “out” for celebrating Valentine’s Day today. Since the feast day lands on a Sunday this year, the Sunday celebration (6th Sunday in Ordinary Time) overrides the feast day, so in essence, there isn’t any Valentine’s Day this year (at least liturgically!) You’re welcome! All kidding aside, February 14th is not only the feast day of St. Valentine, but also of Saints Cyril and Methodius who lived during the ninth century. They are known for preaching Christianity to the Slavic peoples in Central Europe. Their real fame in the Church is that they developed one of the first liturgies that used vernacular (common) language instead of Latin. This caused an uproar with the German bishops, but Pope Adrian II approved the liturgy. These two brothers went to great lengths to defend their use of language. Today it seems like language is taking a beating. Words appear, get deleted, and their meanings get edited on a real-time basis. The only thing that seems to be constant is the acceptance of any foul word imaginable. What worries me more than how our spoken and written language gets abused, is how that language is used against others. We are in a language crisis, but it has more to do with how the language is used than what language is used. Cyril and Methodius devoted their life to bringing the word of God to those who needed to hear the Good News. Even when they were attacked, they held firm in their love for their sisters and brothers and would not be denied sharing the love of Jesus with them. I think there is a great lesson for us in the example of these two men. We are called to deliver the Good News to all of those around us even when it may not be convenient or easy. We need to use a new language…the language of love. Happy Valentine, Cyril, Methodius 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time! Deacon Mike

FORMED-What better topic but that of LOVE this Valentine weekend? God is Love and all who live in love, live in God. In FORMED there is a series called Signs of Grace. Pay particular attention to the Season 2 of this series. The videos are just a small portion of the curriculum created by trusted theologians and an award-winning film studio at the Augustine Institute. This is a comprehensive sacramental preparation program for children that includes a family faith formation component. The videos are short but provide insights you might not have thought of for your children and the forming of their faith. These have been made available for easy access during these continued challenging times. A long time ago, I was given a wonderful acronym for the word GRACE. We use GRACE often in our faith. G-God’s-R-Riches-A-At-C-Christ’s -E-Expense He loved us THAT much. Always remember that. Lead with love every day. Submitted weekly by a St. Bernard Parishioner

Bishop’s Appeal 2021-A Catholic Charities Story The Burden of Debt Life can be challenging. There are times when people feel so lost. They find help through Catholic Charities and the many programs and resources in our diocese. Amanda was in an abusive relationship that took a toll on her physically, emotionally and financially. This relationship left her battered, bruised, and in severe debt. Through God’s grace, Amanda found help from several organizations, including Catholic Charities Financial Health Program. With guidance from Bobbie, Financial Health Counselor, Amanda learned to manage her money, pre-pared a plan to pull herself out of debt, paid her debts on-time and be-came self-sufficient. “Going from $20,000 in debt to no debt, it’s amazing. It feels great,” says Amanda. Your gift to the Bishop’s Appeal helps people like Amanda. To make a gift today contact our Parish Office, ask for Colleen 739-0331 or visit the Bish-op’s Appeal website at www.catholicfoundationgb.org/give, or call Tammy toll-free at 877-500-3580, ext. 8123.
Please Join Us! St Bernard Parish Social Justice Committee is sponsoring a Lenten book study group using, Me and White Supremacy: Combat Racism, Change the World and Become a Good Ancestor, by Layla F. Saad. Using a step-by-step reflection process, she encourages people with white privilege to examine their thoughts and behaviors (often unconsciously) that affects black people negatively. Journaling is an integral part of the program that will make the book study meaningful for you as a transformational Lenten process. The weekly discussion in a group of peers will utilize the Circle Way, a non-hierarchal (no leader) style of listening, storytelling and respectful discussion. Please purchase an online version of the book at Amazon.com or a hard copy to your local bookstore. We will meet via zoom Tuesdays 6:30 pm-8:00 pm, February 23 through March 30. To sign up or for questions please contact Bill at [email protected].

ASH WEDNESDAY & LENT HAPPENINGS As we approach the Season of Lent we enter this Season with the distribution of ashes on Ash Wednesday. This is not a Holy Day of Obligation, it is commonly a well-attended Mass and an ancient tradition where we all join together as a community to be reminded as one of the invocations for the imposition of ashes states that “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” This Ash Wednesday, like much this year, will look a bit different. We want to
take the time to inform you of some of the changes. We would like to reduce the opportunity for potential contam-ination. The distribution of ashes will be done by sprinkling ashes on the top of the head rather than distributed in the accustomed way. This is a more ancient form of the distribution of ashes that continues in the Church today in much of Italy and provides for a decreased opportunity to spread COVID 19.
What is a Parish Mission? A Parish Mission is an opportunity for a parish to set aside time to deepen and clarify its faith response to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. A Parish Mission evokes a deeper faith response in the committed members, reawakens and rekindles the faith, and offers us an opportunity to invite the unchurched and other Christian faiths to share Catholic belief and worship. We at St. Bernard Parish are having a Parish Mission this Lent presented by Fr. John Broussard, CPM Parish Mission Series Keeping the Faith Sunday, March 14, Mission Talks-7:00 pm-8:00 pm Monday, March 15, Mission Talks-7:00 pm-8:00 pm Tuesday, March 16, Mission Talks-7:00 pm-8:00 pm Wednesday, March 17, Mission Talks-7:00 pm-8:00 pm Evening Confessions 6:00 pm-7:00 pm (Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament) Our Parish Mission will be livestream.
