CRAFT EAST BUYERS’ EXPO 2018

2

Host Minister’s MessageOn behalf of the Provincial Govern-ment, I am pleased to welcome buyers, exhibitors and participants to Craft East Buyer’s Expo 2018.

Craft is a true expression of our cul-ture and creativity. Combined with our unique history and a strong sense of place, our province provides many inspirations for both traditional forms of craft and contemporary innovative practices.

This industry is made up of many small businesses driven by creative entrepreneurs interested in growing and seeking new economic opportu-nities; they are building lives here, contributing to their communities, and helping to grow the economy.

Government recognizes this contribution, and is working hard to help craftspeople grow their businesses and link with tourism opportuni-ties. In our effort to maximize tourism growth in Newfoundland and Labrador, the 2017-20 Provincial Tourism Product Development Plan is an action of The Way Forward that focuses on utilizing public re-sources in product development areas to provide the greatest return on investment through increased visitation and spending.

The Tourism Product Development Plan recognizes that visitors to our province are seeking genuine experiences, and authentic craft products are tangible reminders of their experience with our unique culture. That is why our government is also committed to strengthen-ing our support of culture by renewing the cultural plan.

I commend the Craft East Buyer’s Expo 2018 for a regional approach to provide craft artisans with opportunities to develop their busi-nesses and export their work to other markets in Canada and the United States, and I applaud the organizers, volunteers and sponsors for their tireless work and effort to support, stage and showcase such a wonderful event.

THE HONOURABLE CHRISTOPHER MITCHELMORE MINISTER OF TOURISM, CULTURE, INDUSTRY AND INNOVATION

Craft Alliance ~ Alliance métiers d’arts is honoured to present the 1st annual Craft East Buyers’ Expo — a new direction, new format and new venue to present the best Atlantic Canada has to offer in handmade craft, giftware and apparel products from the region.

Together with our government part-ners and industry representatives we hope to further the goals of assisting in the development of the craft sec-tor in our region. This new trade & networking opportunity, provides a tremendous opportunity for those in the industry to learn from counterparts in other provinces; to develop new business contacts; and to celebrate the successes of their industry.

Over the past year, it has been a transition to new ways of working in the wholesale market. This past year we launched Craft LAB, an incubator project at the Toronto Gift Fair, with great success, with 15 companies from across Atlantic Canada having participated in the project.

Craft Alliance also launched our new web portal this past fall, a work in progress, that will complete a Phase 2 of the project in the coming months. The web portal will connect retailers and craft producers throughout the year, to further encourage ongoing development, wholesale orders and relationship building.

The craft industry in Atlantic Canada is widely recognized for our abundant creative talent, which sets the stage for vibrant craft, gift-ware and apparel sectors in Atlantic Canada. We are extremely proud of our artisans and impressed by the undeniable quality of their work known the world over.

Thank you for joining us in Celebrating Craft in Atlantic Canada at the Craft East Buyers’ Expo. It gives me great pleasure to welcome retail buyers, craft exhibitors and honoured guests to this new event, a showcase that celebrates excellence in Atlantic craft.

We also thank the many buyers who have supported Atlantic Cana-dian craftspeople year after year by purchasing handmade products and supporting Atlantic Canadian small business.

Each piece of pottery is stone polished and smoke fired, a traditional firing Using fir tips and sawdust to give each piece a beautiful smokey design. The pieces are then trimmed with sweetgrass, a plant used in native culture for purification. Dampen the sweetgrass to release its fragrant aroma. I also use other traditional artistic practices on my pottery like Mi’kmaq black ash basketry and beadwork
