A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE

Today’s gospel reminds us “unclean spirits” still haunt our families. These “spirits” thrive inside our grudges, punishing silence, impatience and abruptness. Today Jesus offers you the “authority” to cast out these spirits from your life and your family.

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Deuteronomy 18:15-20 Moses explains to the people that a prophet will come from among them, and that they should listen to this prophet’s words, for God has told him of this prophet. God also tells Moses that anyone who pretends to speak in his words, or speaks in the name of other gods shall die. Second Reading: I Corinthians 7:32-35 Paul tells the Corinthians how an unmarried man or woman is able to devote themselves fully to God without concern for the needs of a spouse. Paul explains that God wants to help them promote good and devote themselves more fully to God. Gospel: Mark 1:21-28 As Jesus was teaching, a man with an unclean spirit came to the synagogue and asked if Jesus had come to destroy them. Jesus ordered the spirit out of the man, who shrieked violently as the spirit departed. The people were amazed at the authority he had over the spirit.

READINGS FOR THE WEEKND FEBRUARY 8

First Reading: Job 7:1-4, 6-7 Second Reading: 1Corinthians 9: 16-19, 22-23

Gospel: Mark 1:29-39

FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 1, 2015

“Moses spoke to all the people saying, ‘A prophet like me will the Lord your God, raise up to you from among your own kin; to him you shall listen.’… ‘This was well said. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kin, and will put my words in their mouth; he shall tell them all that I command them.’”

The books of the law of Moses, clearly describe the unique relationship of the lawgiver with God. Ascending and descending the mountain with the tablets of the law in his hand, he led God’s people then, making the covenant between the Lord and His people. Prophets were called to speak in behalf of God, reminding them of their unique relationship with the Lord and chastising them for their infidelity in observing it. They, like Jesus, spoke with authority. Our world today needs to listen to prophetic voices, calling us from complacency to renewal and greater awareness of our covenant relationship with God. Pope Francis, Pope Benedict, and other witnesses fill that role for us. Called by the Lord, inspired by the Spirit, their words and witness bring us back to oneness with God. Writings like the ‘Light of Faith’ and ‘Joy of the Gospel’ are texts directed to all believers. “To them you shall listen.” Take some time to read.

In today's Gospel we see how Jesus' actions demonstrate the power and authority be-hind His words. This is what impressed the people who saw Jesus heal the man with the unclean spirit. In His words and in His deeds, Jesus showed the power and authority of God. People responded to Jesus' teachings and healings and were amazed because He spoke and acted with authority. As people of faith, we want others to observe consis-tency between our words and actions, too. The Church demonstrates the power of Jesus’ words by teaching us to live and act as God’s Children - always ready to share love, mercy, justice and peace with all!

THE FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD

On February 2nd, we celebrate The Presentation of the Lord. This is a time to remember when Jo-seph and Mary brought Jesus to the Temple in Je-rusalem 40 days after His birth and presented Him to the Jewish priests.

Let us pray in honor of this special feast…

God of Hope, You sent the Infant Jesus, as a light shining in the darkness. As Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple, may we always be present at Mass and receive Him in the Eucharist. Help us to look for the light of Christ’s presence in our lives and the warmth of His love in our homes. We ask this in the Name of Jesus. Amen.

St. Blaise Feast Day - February 3rd

St. Blaise is the Patron Saint of throat ailments. Two unlit candles are blessed, held slightly open, and pressed against the throat as a blessing is said. Saint Blaise's protection of those with throat troubles apparently comes from a legend that a boy was brought to him who had a fishbone stuck in his throat. The boy was about to die when Saint Blaise healed him. St. Blaise teaches us to be prayerful and concerned for the well being of others.
