THE VERY, LAST LAUGH (from the DIABLO As)

Last year I replaced all the windows in my house with those expensive double-pane energy-efficient kind. Yesterday, I got a call from the con-tractor who installed them. He was complaining that the windows had been installed a whole year ago and I hadn't paid for them yet. Hellloooo? Now, just because I'm an ex-blond doesn't mean that I am au-tomatically stupid. So I told him just exactly what his fast-talking sales guy had told ME last year.. namely, that in just ONE YEAR these win-dows would pay for themselves! "Helllooooo"? (I told him). "It's been a year." There was only silence at the other end of the line, so I finally just hung up.... He hasn't called back, probably too embarrassed about for-getting the guarantee they made me. Bet he won't underestimate a blond anymore. Paddy was tooling along the road one fine day when the local policeman, a friend of his, pulled him over. "What's wrong, Seamus?" Paddy asked. "Well didn't ya know, Paddy, that your wife fell out of the car about five miles back?" said Seamus. "Ah, praise the Almighty!" Paddy replied with relief. "I thought I'd gone deaf!"

PQ SUNSHINE CORNER (Mostly Gossip)

Sad News. Cindy James ’ mother passed away Jan 25th. Her funeral (in Kansas) is planned for Tuesday, Jan 30. Pat and Cindy expect to return to Albuquerque no sooner than Feb 1. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families as they go through these tough times.

The Meeting potluck provided great food and a chance to visit.

We saw John McD’s Cabriolet at the meeting as well as Lyle Anderson’s fordor and Chaves’ tudor. Several new members have joined to reduce our average age.

A few folks claim to be working on their “A”s, but progress seems to be wishful thinking. It seems that buying a few parts serves as an ease to their minds.

Did Jim B put in his new Mitchell transmission in his fordor? I’ve not heard any bragging.

Remember, I’m watching you! The Sleuth

There are two (2) Model A National Meets this summer. They are shown below. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

#1: 2018 MARC National Meet; Branson, Missouri - June 23—July 3,

Plans are underway to travel to Branson Missouri for the 2018 MARC National meet. MARC membership may be required in order to register.

We will leave Albuquerque on Saturday morning, June 23. Branson is approximately 900 miles from Albuquerque so our daily drive goal will be approximately 300 miles a day. The host hotel has sold out of rooms so we have elected to stay at the Econo Lodge in Branson which is one block away from the host hotel.

The Econo lodge is located at 230 S. Wildwood drive, Branson, Missouri 65616. Phone: 417-336-4849.

In looking at the preliminary meet plans, the first activity is the welcome party on Monday evening June 25. We would plan to depart Branson on Sunday, July 1. Please book your hotel reservations directly with the hotel. They have provided us with a nightly rate of $60.00 plus tax.

We will have two nights on the road to get to Branson and two nights for our return trip. That hotel information will be provided once we have finalized our travel plans.

We plan to have more details about the Branson trip at the February meeting. This looks like it is going to be a popular event so you need to book your hotel ASAP if you have any interest in going. Thermostats in a Model A Engine

Back in the beginning of Model A days, the radiators were built with just enough cooling to allow the engine to “warm-up” but not overheat in most applications. An occasional steaming engine was permitted. Engines with heavier workloads, such as trucks, were provided with more radiator cooling capacity. In cooler weather, like winter, radiators were often covered in order to restrict air flow thus reducing the cooling to allow the engine to reach a suitable operating temperature. The amount of restriction was based on experience and guessing.

Using a thermostat gets the engine up to a reasonable temperature sooner which results in a cleaner running engine. However, in a Model A engine, there are differences in the coolant circulation within the engine block that must be considered. Let’s review this important difference.

In a modern engine design, the engine block is designed to permit the water pump to circulate the coolant with-in the block when the thermostat is closed. Then as the engine reaches operating temperature, the thermostat opens far enough to allow the coolant to enter the block to maintain the desired temperature. When the ther-mostat is closed, the coolant circulation within the block prevents “hot spots” from developing.

The Model A block and water pump are designed so the water pump sucks the coolant out of the top of the en-gine and pushes the coolant into the radiator and pulls coolant in from the radiator. No significant circulation occurs within the block without the circulation through the radiator. The installation of a thermostat in the water outlet to the radiator, stops the coolant circulation within the engine block until the thermostat detects enough temperature to open.

Here is the problem: The lack of coolant circulation when the thermostat is closed can result in hot spots within the engine block, particularly the rear of the engine. It is fairly well documented that the back of the engine block (like #4 cylinder) operates hotter than the front of the block (#1 cylinder), which is closest to the thermo-stat.

A picture of possible temperatures within the engine is as follows: The thermostat indicates 160 degrees. With a restricted flow within the block, the rear of the engine may be operating over 190 degrees. The engine under load may now overheat at the rear but the driver thinks it is running cooler because the temperature gauge shows a low number. My suggestion is to drill a couple holes in the thermostat to allow a significant amount of circulation to occur even when the thermostat is closed. The engine temperature readout gauge will vary temperature more but the driver will see a more true picture of the operating temperature of the engine.

Your choice is to drive without a thermostat, like the old days, which provides good coolant circulation or use a “leaky thermostat” which is an intermediate step to stabilizing the engine operating temperature for a cleaner running engine.

I’m running a 160 degree thermostat welded into a short piece on stainless tube (Bert’s part # A-8270) installed in the upper hose close to the head water neck outlet. The thermostat has 2 holes (#1 drill, 0.229”). I may try 3 holes soon to evaluate the temp profile. The hole sizes are up to you.

You may not want to run any thermostat if your radiator is marginal in cooling. ALS

WANTED:

The story about your Model A; Any “Breakdown” story; Photos for this newsletter; Technical articles or a Tiny Tip. How about a mystery photo of when you were younger. Remember this is your news-letter - what would you like to see in it - any suggestions? Please let your Editor know.

Temperature Gauge for Model A

If you desire a gauge that can be mounted inside the car, you'll need a mount for it. They typically can be attached under the existing instrument panel. There are several to choose from that hold one, two, or even three accessory gauges. You can also get a mount that fits on the steering column, although this isn't the neatest installation. If you do use an accessory round dial temperature gauge, you'll need a way for the gauge's sensor to connect into your cooling system. There are several ways to do that.

Aries Limited makes a miniwater pipe that goes into the upper radiator hose. A standard temperature probe can be screwed into the pipe and the wire can run across the engine and into the car.

Bratton's has a couple of other ideas for the temperature probe. One part is a side water inlet that has a temperature probe boss built in to it that replaces the stock water inlet. The nice thing about this one is that the probe wire to the gauge is much shorter than most and can ride up the wire loom into the Terminal Box, making for a neat installation. A similar part replaces the water outlet above the water pump. It too has a boss built into the side for a temperature probe. Or it could be used to run water to a hot water heater instead. So if you want to pay closer attention to your Model A's water temperature (instead of waiting for steam to come out of the radiator), consider adding one of these accessory tem-perature gauge solutions. Hopefully, if your car does begin to overheat, you'll notice it before it boils over. --RB Rogue Ram

Carburetor Idle Air Adjust

Question: When you turn the carburetor air adjustment screw in (clockwise), are you making the mixture richer or leaner? My 'A' has a tendency to want to stall when you slow down to turn a corner and have the clutch in to shift into second gear. I have set the idle up higher than it should be to avoid the stall problem. Does this seem like an idle mixture that is too lean or too rich? I have heard both opinions expressed. Answer: The carburetor air adjustment affects idle air mixture only. For this adjustment to work correctly you must have no air leaks around the manifold gasket (intake side), at the carburetor or vacuum line. Many times the throttle shaft in the upper housing of the carburetor is worn and allows air to be drawn in around the shaft. To make correct adjustment of idle air adjustment screw begin by turning the idle air screw all the way in (clockwise) to the seat (lightly) and then back out (counter-clockwise) 1-1/2 turns. With the spark lev-er in the full retard position, bring the engine to an idle. Lean the carburetor mixture a little by adjusting the dash adjusting knob for no more than 1/4 turn open. Now turn the idle air screw in slowly until the engine starts to stall (Note the position of the screw). It should cause the engine to start to stall out about 1/4 turn in (counterclockwise) from where you started. Now slowly turn the screw counter-clockwise until the engine starts to stall again. Then turn back counter-clockwise to a point in between the two stall points. This should be about 1-1/2 turns from the seat. Turning the screw clockwise reduces the air mixture to the idle fuel, making it a richer mixture (less air). Turning the screw counter-clockwise increases the air mixture, thereby providing a leaner fuel mixture. If the screw has little or no effect it means you either have an air leak in the idle circuit (usually caused by too much wear around the throttle shaft) or if you have a windshield wiper vacuum line you may have a leak in that line.
