MESSAGE FROM MRS. KENNAUGH We have been looking at assessment data to see what improvement our school has made so far this year, and it is wonderful! The following chart shows how our DIBELS scores have changed this year.

Grade Level

% of students meeting

benchmark (Core)--

September

% of students meeting

benchmark (Core)--January

Change

1 65 74 +9% 2 75 79 +4% 3 64 75 +11% 4 73 74 +1% 5 60 67 +7% 6 83 78 -5%

Keep in mind that percentages may include a different set of students, as we have had some students move away from Beagle and others join our Beagle team. When looking only at students who have been at Beagle since the fall, we have seen increases as follows:

• Number of students who increased from Intensive to Strategic: 14

• Number of students who increased from Strategic to Core: 44

• Number of students who increased from Intensive to Core: 12

Our PTO-sponsored Family Fun Night is quickly approaching, and we are still hoping and looking for donations for the silent auction. Each classroom has an “assigned” basket theme; that information was sent home in previous Friday folders and can be found in this week’s newsletter as well. Please have the items to school by next Wednesday (Feb. 13). Thank you in advance for supporting our school! As always, if you have any questions or would like to discuss any concerns, please contact me.

We have been implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at Beagle for approximately 5 ½ months. Part of this implementation process revolved around teaching students “behavior expectations” for various areas of the school. Students are recognized when they demonstrate behavior that “ROCKS”, or behavior that shows Respect, Ownership, Cooperation, Kindness, and Safety. Teaching a behavior that we expect to see at school, works best when there is consistency between the home and school setting. A strong partnership between the school and family is important. When parents are involved, children are more successful. I would like to encourage parents to participate in their own child’s positive behavioral support program at home. The following are a few ways you can incorporate PBIS in your home. Encourage your child to demonstrate these behavioral expectations at home:

• Respect • Ownership   • Cooperation • Kindness • Safety

• Ask your child how each of these five

expectations would look like in your home and in the community.

• Compare home rules with the PBIS rules. • Remember 4 positives for every 1 negative

interaction Some examples of home rewards for demonstrating the five behavioral expectations:

• Read a story to your child, or have your child read to you

• Extra bathtub time • Extra time on the computer • Watch his or her favorite movie • Playing outside for extra time • Play a board game or complete a puzzle together • Special activity with parent • Phone call to relative • Cook his or her favorite dinner • Help cook dinner • Color or draw with your child • Go for a walk together
