Local RCMP found no bomb at Mission Secondary School after hours of searching.
The school’s students and staff were evacuated after a message was scrawled on a bathroom mir-ror stating a bomb would go off at 1:45 p.m.
Two RCMP dogs went through the school and turned up nothing, according to school principal Jim Pearce.
However, only a few people were allowed back in the school Tuesday, and only to retrieve car keys, etc., he said.
School was open Wednesday, Pearce confirmed.
According to school superin-
tendent Bill Fletcher and MSS’ middle school vice-principal Dave Cyr, after the message was found in a girls’ washroom, the RCMP were called and the students were dismissed for lunch five minutes early.
The Grade 7 and 8 students were kept on school grounds, but far away from the building, and were supervised by staff.
The Grade 9-12 students were free to leave the property, said Cyr.
MSS’ current enrolment is about 1,100 students.
Once school was officially let out for the day in the early after-noon, parents were able to pick up their children from the Leisure Centre. This site also served as the school bus pick-up.

Some Mission parents are ramping up their efforts to ensure enough new students reg-ister March 12 for the proposed traditional school.
A public information meeting at Fraserview Elementary School Tuesday night concluded with about 40 parents making plans on how
to get the word out about the new program of choice being offered this September providing a minimum of 75 new kids sign up — defined as any child that isn’t already enrolled in a local school, except those who already have a spot in upcoming kindergarten classes.
Several parents volunteered to spread the word throughout their networks, and to accom-pany trustees to certain key public locations with informational pamphlets.
There will also be a final public meeting March 11 at 7 p.m. at Fraserview.
Mission Public Schools wants to start with a kindergarten to Grade 4 model which would allow the program to grow as the initial regis-trants climb through the grades.

Mark and Rosema-rie Surakka are hoping to convince a judge this week that a person’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms don’t get ex-tinguished when they die.
Rosemarie Surakka is suing the municipal, provincial and federal governments, on her daughter Lisa Dudley’s behalf, alleging Dudley’s right to life was violated when the RCMP didn’t properly investigate a shots-fired call in 2008 in Mission.
Dudley, 37, and her boyfriend, Guthrie McKay, 33, were shot in their rural home on Greenwood Drive, which according to statement of facts entered in court last year, had housed a mari-juana grow operation.
McKay was pro-nounced dead on the scene, but Dudley had survived four days inside the house before she was found. She died en-route to hospital.
The government is ap-
plying to have the case dismissed, said Surak-ka’s lawyer, Monique Pongracic-Speier, who will be basing her argu-ments on the interpre-tation of the Canadian charter of rights and free-doms and international law.
The Surakkas say they want accountability and justice for what hap-pened to their daughter.
Former Mission Mountie, Cpl. Mike White, who investigated the shots fired call left the scene after 10 minutes and did not follow up.
He was given a written reprimand and docked one day’s pay.
Three people have been charged with the couple’s murder. Last year Jack Woodruff pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in pris-on with no chance of pa-role for 25 years. Police have also charged Justin MacKinnon and Bruce Main with first-degree murder. The trial for the men is expected to begin on May 27.
— With Record files
from the start, 100 new students would need to be enrolled.
“Registration day will make it or break it,” said trustee vice-chair Jim Taylor.
The board has said repeat-edly if the minimum numbers
aren’t reached, the traditional model will not move forward.
A committee was struck to plan the new offering, and member Rob Clark, a Mission teacher, said they “didn’t want to reinvent the wheel,” and that they took cues from Abbots-ford, which boasts three public
traditional schools.Principal Brian Tucker also
sits on the committee and said there are hundreds of students who leave Mission daily to at-tend school, and take with them each about $7,500 in provincial funding.
“They are leaving because
presumably, they’re going there to get something that they’re not getting here,” he said.
One of the traditional mod-el’s key features is account-ability contracts signed by the student, parent and classroom teacher. In this type of educa-tion stream, parent involvement
is high. There is also a regu-lar homework policy (about 10 minutes per grade level), a dress code, less group work, and more teacher-directed in-struction. Plus, the model sees desks arranged in rows, and students answering questions would be required to stand.
If the proposal is successful, the teachers hired would be carefully selected.
“It wouldn’t merely be just who doesn’t have a job,” said Clark. “There would be a very clear job description.”

A soon-to-be Mission bride is recovering after her bachelorette party in Vancouver turned vio-lent.
Vancouver Police con-firmed a fight happened around 11:45 p.m. Sat-urday inside Bar None Night Club on Hamilton Street. The 29-year-old Mission woman was in-volved in an altercation with two different groups of people. She was treat-ed in hospital for cuts to her head and leg.
“We do know that
there was another group involved, other than the victim and bar staff,” said VPD spokesper-son Randy Fincham. “It is important that these people come forward and tell their side of the story.”
On its Facebook page, Bar None says it takes “the safety of our pa-trons and employees se-riously.”
There have been no charges laid in the case and the investigation is ongoing.
Anyone that has infor-mation about this fight and has not yet spoken to police are asked to call the Vancouver Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The recently unveiled fallen firefighters monu-ment established in Vic-toria has strong ties to Mission.
Local artist Dean Lauze crafted the seven-foot-tall bronze statue that will permanently stand on the rear leg-islature grounds, and Mission firefighter Dave Taylor served as his model.
“It was a tremendous honour to be asked to create this monument that commemorates B.C.’s fallen firefight-ers,” said Lauze. “Over many years, we have done smaller projects for various fire halls, and have many friends who are firefighters, but never have we felt the connection we felt while sculpting this statue. It was a great pleasure to work with the B.C. Pro-fessional Firefighters Association and to hear their stories. They pro-tect us all and watch out for each other like one big family.”
“It was an absolute honour to participate in the development of the fallen firefighters [monument],” said Tay-lor. “It represents our brothers and sisters that have given the upmost sacrifice. I know it is valued by all provincial firefighters that we now have a monument that reflects their dedication and sacrifice.”
Members of Mission Fire/Rescue Service and Lauze were in Victo-ria Feb. 13 for the cer-emony, which saw more than 500 firefighters from across the province march down Belleville and Government streets for the biennial com-memoration of those lost
in the line of duty.A national firefighters
memorial was created last year in Ottawa at the site of that city’s great fire of 1900, but B.C. had no formal recognition of the sacrifices made by the province’s firefight-ers until now.

He has a white beard and a bully pulpit on CBC television, but
he doesn’t use it to promote hockey fighting.
Instead he sucker punches the oil and gas industry at every opportunity, with in-creasingly flagrant disregard for the rules of science. Pub-lic broadcasting referees keep their whistles in their pockets, wary of offending a legend.
He’s David Suzuki, and he has evolved from geneticist to TV celebrity to his current role as the Don Cherry of Canadian science, an angry curmudgeon lashing out at his enemies.
Earlier I wrote about Su-zuki’s hit piece on the Alberta oil sands, featuring selective pollution studies and a celeb-rity turn by movie director James Cameron, who toured the alleged carbon crime scene in his personal jet he-licopter.
Suzuki’s latest Scud mis-sile of misinformation was launched Feb. 7 on The Nature of Things. It’s called Shattered Ground, and it borrows heavily from earlier shock docs that target hydrau-lic fracturing for shale oil and gas.
While clearly aimed at the surging shale gas industry in B.C., this hour-long program offers little about B.C.’s long history of gas development. Suzuki’s voice-over refers briefly to B.C.’s Oil and Gas Commission, insinuating it was set up as a pet regulator protecting the industry from stricter oversight.
Mostly the show focuses on places like Dish, Texas and Dimock, Penn-sylvania. The Texas segment talks about traces of neuro-toxins in residents’ blood samples, blaming this on gas drilling and “frack-ing,” the new swear word of professional environmentalists.
The evidence shows some people have these traces in their blood, but others don’t, which suggests that more likely sources are cigarettes or exposure to disinfectants.
Pennsylvania and Colorado are key stops for the anti-fracking crowd. For centuries there have been places known for methane dissolved in groundwater, typically from
shallow coal seams. This is where you can find
a rustic fellow to shake a jug of well water and touch his Bic lighter to it, producing a brief blue flame. The standard sequence moves to a sink and faucet, where a more impressive methane fireball is generated.
Suzuki’s voice-over notes that this is the scene that really gets media attention.
There’s no evidence that drilling caused it, but hey, it’s TV. Science, meet Hill-billy Handfishin’.
Protest sequences take up much of the program. Moms rally against a gas well near a school in Erie, Pennsyl-vania, forcing evil Canadian corpora-tion Encana to
back off. An elderly Quebec woman sobs on camera, con-vinced that a nearby gas well will trigger a relapse of her cancer.
One bit of local content is a segment on fracking-induced earthquakes, presented with sombre alarm by Ben Parfitt, go-to researcher for the anti-
industry left in B.C. These are detectable by sensitive instruments, as is the case with some mining and other industrial activities, but ac-cording to the Oil and Gas Commission, they don’t do any actual harm.
It should be noted that Suzuki doesn’t do much be-yond reading a script on these shows. He has people to load up the propaganda weaponry, just as his ghostwriter in To-ronto cranks out the relatively innocuous weekly columns that run in some Black Press publications.
In fairness, most episodes of The Nature of Things are in the original spirit of the show. A recent program on an ancient Egyptian aquifer, voiced by Suzuki over Na-tional Geographic video foot-age, would be appropriate for a high school classroom.
The same cannot be said for this anti-fracking screed, which is plainly and reckless-ly calculated to twist public opinion against a crucial B.C. industry.
Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for
Black Press and BCLocalnews.com.
Not always a bargainFor those of us who live in a community so close
to the U.S., cross-border shopping has been, and al-ways will be, an option.
But what used to be a routine wave-through hop across the line to take advantage of a few lower price points – or a nice little change of scenery – has become almost an imperative in today’s sluggish economy.
But in peoples’ urge to save, they may not calcu-late the hidden costs of travel or taxation that may nullify the ‘bargain’ they get south of the border.
The attention of Canada’s leaders must be focused on problems north of the border that exacerbate the situ-ation. One is a system of taxes and tariffs that make it impossible for Canadian retail businesses to compete on a level playing field with their U.S. counterparts.
It is also time for the federal government – and big business – to look at the real hardship of middle-in-come Canadians struggling to make ends meet in the face of increased gas and food prices and drastically eroded spending power.
While there is always some fickleness on the part of consumers, many of those venturing south to save right now are thinking of survival.
Local government must also address an over-sat-uration of retail business predicated on earlier eco-nomic conditions. And local retailers should always be looking at how well they serve their customers.
There are many good reasons to ‘shop local.’ Cross-border shopping, on the scale that is now hap-pening, is a short-sighted approach that tends to un-dermine our own standard of living.
And pouring Canadian dollars into the U.S. econ-omy is doing nothing to help our own, or address problems of Canadian business that, if solved, could see more money on hand to spend with our local businesses.

Editor, The Record:I had no use for attack
ads when Prime Minster Stephen Harper used them in the last elec-tion. So it comes as no surprise that I also dis-like the entire concept of such ads which B.C. Premier Christy Clark is using ahead of the up-coming election. They drag politics down into the gutter.
Attack ads have a bully boy aspect to them. So much for teaching the younger people about not calling others names when the current crop of mudslinging ads is being run in the media.
I have no plans to vote for NDP leader Adrian Dix for a couple of reasons, even though I found him to be genuine when I met him twice at the rallies that he at-tended at Mission Me-morial Hospital. I’ll be placing my mark with the Greens who have be-come my protest vote of choice.
I cannot disassoci-ate a vote for Mr. Dix as being a vote for the overwhelming influence of the teacher’s union within the NDP.
Nor do I support his decision to continue
with the quota system which Carol James in-troduced which is a throwback to another time. It’s undemocratic to insist that the party — not the grassroots — gets to decide whether the candidate will be a female, a minority mem-ber, or a person with special needs over the quaint idea I have that the only decision to make is who is the best person for the job.
Actually, the whole quota system is an in-sult to the very people it wants to include as it says that they aren’t good enough to make it on their own.
That wasn’t James’ intention, I’m sure, but appearances count for everything in political perceptions.
But if I were advising Mr. Dix, I would tell him to forget the high road and start coming up with his own attack ads on Christy’s government fiascos starting with the BC Rail scandal.
Hating the low road of the attack ads doesn’t mean that I think they aren’t effective because they are. The last federal Liberal leader made the same mistake as Mr. Dix
is now attempting by not stooping to the level of his opponent and he paid the political price for it.
So even if I’m not vot-ing NDP, I would still
tell Mr. Dix to grow up and realize that Harper has made attacks ads a fact of political life here in Canada. If Mr. Dix is putting his faith in the
intelligence of the gen-eral public to discount those ads he’s only fool-ing himself.

edition.I wonder why people get so upset about small de-
posits of doggy doo that the local snails will quickly turn into their food, whereas in the rural areas, horse-back riders habitually unleash 20 pounds of horse turds freely without picking them up.
And while these same horse people think they should ride through forest hiking trails, hikers can hardly avoid getting animal waste all over their shoes.
Do you suppose the horseback riders could take the turds home with them to fertilize their gardens, and once a week or so, could they all get together to pick up all the horse droppings?

BY CAROL AUNMission Record
When Kim Allan steps into a forest today, he will no longer be consumed with thoughts of work. The now former director of forestry for the District of Mission is enjoying his first day of retirement.
Allan has seen forestry operations in Mission change over the course of 24 years. After working as a forester on Vancouver Island with BC Forest Products for a decade, Allan joined the district in 1989 as direc-tor and has held the position ever since.
When Allan and his family moved to Mission, his was the only position in the forestry department. About a year later, a manager was added and it con-tinued to grow.
At one point, in the 1970s, there was a 20-person staff, recalled Allan. The forest industry crashed in the 1980s and now there are less than seven positions.
“Mission Municipal Forest is a great way to prac-tise forestry in a community,” said Allan, adding the industry has had its ups and downs, but the district has always found a way to make things work.
During Allan’s years at the helm, the district has earned $8 million in profits.
“I really enjoy having a community forest,” said Allan, adding it provides multiple benefits for the community, such as recreation, education and social aspects.
Allan sees a lot of promise in the future for Mis-sion’s forests and will keep an eye on how things develop with forestry manager Bob O’Neal taking the reins.
At 60 years old, Allan says his “needs and wants to do other things in life are exceeding the needs and wants at work.”
While he doesn’t have any plans to leave the com-munity permanently, Allan and his wife have an ex-tensive trip planned to South America and Europe to celebrate his retirement.
Allan, who is a certified arborist, isn’t ruling out picking up contract work in the future, but for now, he is focusing on travelling and spending more time with his family.

Renovations start next month at municipal hall to create one window for service.
The change was rec-ommended in the core services review and will cost the district $25,000.
Currently, there are
service counters on both municipal hall floors: the top floor for administra-tion and finance and the lower floor for develop-ment and engineering services.
According to a report to council, this creates confusion and frustration when customers are un-sure where to go.
To centralize service, three finance personnel will move to the lower level and the upper floor waiting room will be re-duced to create more of-fice space.
Work will be done dur-ing evenings and week-ends as much as possible to reduce interruptions to day-to-day operations,
and is expected to be fin-ished for this year’s tax season.
More than half of the project funds will come from general capital re-serve, while the remain-ing $11,368 will come from administration, finance, inspection ser-vices, and planning de-partment budgets.

Blanket BC has collected more than 100,000 blankets. The mile-stone was recently reached through campaigns like Drive on the Line and Hike for the Homeless events.
All donations are distributed to organizations that help people in need. Blanket BC was found-ed seven years ago by Mission’s Gregory Ould, and is now run by a
group of volunteer directors. If you would like to volunteer with Blan-ket BC or make a donation, contact Gregory at 778-242-9940 or e-mail [email protected].

The Mission Adopt-a-Block Society received a $3,520 grant from Vancity through its community project pro-gram.
This grant will be put towards the annual spring and fall clean-ups to help increase community involvement and cover additional hot spots in Mission.
The funding will allow Adopt-a-Block to expand its clean-ups, and provide more opportunities for Mis-sion non-profits to raise money via
the annual events.More than 140 households and 25
community groups have committed to regular clean-ups of their neighbour-hood and other selected areas.
Vancity’s community project grants program funds endeavours that support cooperative principles and practices, social justice and financial inclusion, and environmental sustainability.

The show must go on. Despite facing an uncertain future, Ballet Kelowna has found a way to finish its 10th an-niversary tour, which includes a Mis-sion stop.
Earlier this month, the Kelowna-based company announced its artistic director is retiring, and the Coquitlam and Mission shows were to be can-celled.
Only through an outpouring of sup-port from individuals and businesses has Ballet Kelowna agreed to finish the season and suspend operations at the end of April, said the company.
Ballet Kelowna is scheduled to per-form Passages on the Clarke Theatre stage April 16. This show takes the audience on a journey through Spain, Russia, England and then home to Can-ada, captivating watchers with a mosaic of classical and contemporary dance.
Mission show presenter Pam Alexis of AEM Alexis Event Management, was surprised to hear about the group’s financial difficulties about three weeks ago.
Mission is the last stop before the company folds and Alexis is hoping ticket sales will pick up.
“Ballet Kelowna is a very young and athletic group, different than a run-of-the-mill ballet company,” she said. “I’m hoping people will pay attention and go to the theatre. We need to sup-port arts and culture.”
Alexis has personally sent out hun-dreds of invitations to the show, but admits she will cancel the event if there isn’t enough support here to give the
fading ballet company a strong audi-ence.
“I don’t want to pull the plug. I hate to think Mission can’t support this.”
Tickets are available at the Clarke Theatre, the Mission Leisure Cen-tre, Jazz-Ma-Tazz in Abbotsford and Maple Ridge, and at the Fraser Valley Academy of Dance Studios on First Avenue in Mission. Partial proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Culture Kids, a new fund established and administered by the cultural re-sources commission that helps to offset costs of cultural activities for children.
For more information contact Pam Alexis at 604-302-2005.
Ballet Kelowna is still planning on having a show in Mission in April.

In 2000, Michelle and Mike Norman opened Wine Kitz in Mission’s Junction Shopping Cen-tre, with an eye to build a business that would in-clude the whole family. Fast forward to 2005 and you find their business bursting at the seams and ready to move to new facilities on London Av-enue.
Daughter Robyn Nor-man joined the team eight years ago and today Michelle and Robyn are responsible for all as-pects of the business.
“People come to us from all over the Fraser Valley,” said Michelle. “They are mostly from Mission, but some come from as far away as
Chilliwack to work with us. They become our friends.”
Wine Kitz provides five levels of wine-making kits: Ultra Pre-mium, Premium, Value, Specialty and Limited Release. Less common varietal wines such as Petit Verdot and Brunello are offered on a limited basis. Wines considered the signature of a region — Pinot Noir from New Zealand and Shiraz from Australia, for example — along with other varietal or blended red, white or rosé wines are available in kits all year long.
“Our customers like our range of prod-ucts. We have kits that take four, five or eight weeks,” shared Robyn. “We help our customers select the wine and aging
time that will suit them and the wine best. Ev-eryone’s different,” she added.
Exclusive to Mission’s Wine Kitz store are 15-bottle batches, which is “perfect for those who don’t have a lot of stor-age space or want to make sure they have just enough wine on hand for when company calls,” explained Michelle.
Specialty seasonal wines, fruit wines and products like Sherry-style wine kits are avail-able in addition to grape wine kits.
Wine Kitz, at #1 – 33111 London Ave., is open Tuesday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 604-826-9529 or visit www.WineKitz.com for more information.

The Mission Adopt-A-Block Society is once again in the process of planning its annual general meeting and is inviting the public to join in to learn more about what they do in the community, what exciting changes are coming, and what programs and services are available to you, your family, local schools and community groups.
With a recent increase in funding, the society had an opportunity to create more educational programs and opportunities. At this year’s AGM, there will be presentations on what these programs are, along with other local presenters from Abbotsford/Mission Recycling Program, Albert McMahon Grade 4/5 class with Lisa Reist, and the Junior Bug Club.
Come out and learn how your
group, school or family, can get involved in making a difference in the local environment. There will be on-site sign up available for the Junior Bug Club.
The Mission Adopt-A-Block Society has grown in leaps and bounds over the past few years and with this growth comes a need for more volunteers. Volunteering doesn’t just mean adopting a street, it could mean lending a few hours a month to help in the office, or delivering flyers about events, or even joining the board of directors. If you would like to help, please join us on Wednesday, March 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cedarbrooke Chateau at 32331 Seventh Ave. Snacks and refreshments will be provided
Call today to RSVP 604-826-9423 or email [email protected].
A clothes dryer is such a familiar part of our everyday lives that it’s easy to forget it is also a large heating appliance and a fire hazard.
Duct vent blockages caused by highly flammable dryer lint contribute to thousands of clothes dryer fires every year.
Learn more about clothes dryer fire safety hazards, dryer cleaning tips, and fire prevention by checking the dryer safety tips.
DO:• Remain nearby and vigilant
while a clothes dryer is operating.
• Install new dryers properly, following manufacturer’s recommendations and current codes.
• Have new installations professionally inspected or re-inspect past installations.
• Make sure the exhaust pipe is as short and level as possible with minimal bends which restrict airflow.
• If the duct runs long, such as under a floor and has many turns, have it inspected and cleaned more often since lint will be more likely to accumulate.
• Keep the areas surrounding the dryer clean and clear.
• Keep in mind that some dryer sheets can leave a film on the lint screen that can inhibit air circulation. Check the screen and clean if needed.
• Visually inspect the lint filter with each use and replace it immediately if you see tears or rips.
• Clean the entire hose-like duct vent where lint gathers regularly.
DON’T:• Don’t sleep or leave the
house while a dryer is operating.• Don’t operate the dryer
without a lint screen to filter lint.
• Do not store flammable materials such as cardboard boxes, or clothing around clothes dryer.
• Don’t forget that synthetic materials such as vinyl or rubber are flammable at lower temperatures and will burn at higher temperatures than natural materials.
• Never dry towels, sponges, or rags used to clean up industrial chemicals, oil spills or other flammable liquids.
• Do not use flexible plastic dryer ducts even though some installers and homeowners continue to use them.
• Replace plastic ducts that are still installed in older homes.
• Never use a lubricant such as WD40 to quiet a noisy dryer belt. It is highly flammable and sparks can ignite it.
• Never use sheet metal screws to secure elbows.
• This checklist is only a guide and not a substitute for professional and current guidance. Always follow manufacturer’s instructions.

B.C. band Mother Mother is touring the country and will be in Mission on Dec. 12.
The group will be pro-moting their new album, The Sticks, released just this month.
The Juno-nominated quintet will begin their trip on the East Coast, starting in Halifax, and will gradually make their way out west. Hannah Georgas will be their special guest.
The Sticks follows a whirlwind year of near constant touring in support of their previ-ous album Eureka, and features a collection of 14 new songs includ-
ing the addictive first single Let’s Fall In Love, currently sitting at num-ber two nationally on the Modern Rock radio chart.
The band’s ascent from an acoustic folk trio tour-ing the open mics of their hometown (Quadra Island), to an interna-tionally revered alterna-tive pop/rock five-piece touring the clubs, the-aters and event centers of North America and Europe, not only dem-onstrates just how far they’ve come but has also blazed the trail for what’s to follow. Featuring the multi-talented line up of Ryan Guldemond (vo-
cals/guitar), Molly Gul-demond (vocals/synth), Jasmin Parkin (vocals/keys), Jeremy Page (bass/horns) and Ali Sia-dat (percussion/electron-ics), Mother Mother’s unique blend of clever lyrics, stunning vocals, quirky arrangements and a multi-dimensional sound both on stage and in the studio has amassed the group a reputation that has brought about their celebration as indie darlings, all the while endearing to the main-stream.
Mother Mother will be playing at the Clarke The-atre on Dec. 12. Tickets at Ticketmaster.ca.
Help ring in the fes-tive season and support your local food bank and Mission Commu-nity Services Christmas Bureau by attending Mission Rotary Club’s annual Christmas Carol Festival held at the Clarke Theatre Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.
This year’s festi-val features Deroche, Dewdney, and Cherry Hill elementary schools, Heritage Park Second-ary and Valley Christian School.
Also performing are Joy Vox Community Choir, the Fraser Valley Stage Society and the Chilliwack Symphony Chorus.
Admission is by dona-tion to the Food Bank and Christmas Bureau and Rotarians will be on hand in the lobby to assist Phil Hope from Mission Community Services in collecting the items. This event has a long history in Mission and has a sing-a-long portion at the end of the program which for many marks the beginning of the Christmas season in our community. For fur-ther information please call Rotarian Pam Alexis at 604-302-2005.

The Mission Record Thursday, November 22, 2012 24
B.C. band Mother Mother is touring the country and will be in Mission on Dec.

TO ROW THE OARS OR UNFURL THE SAILS
Our journey through life is sometimes described as a boat ride. Sometimes we take an active role in that ride, steering the boat or rowing the oars. Other times, we take a more passive role, unfurling the sails and letting the wind pull us along. There are times in life when we must be active to get what we want; a rowboat won’t go very far on calm water without someone working the oars. But there are times in life when we really don’t have much control over things, and we can just go with the flow. But even then, we need to make sure we are facing in the right direction. A strong wind may make our journey a lot easier, but only if the boat is pointing in the right direction. We are all on a journey to the heart of God. Sometimes we need to take the oars in our hands and row. Other times, we just need to unfurl our sails and catch the wind of God. But in either case, we need to be heading in the right direction. Fortunately, God has implanted in us a moral compass, our conscience, which lets us know whether we are on the right track or not. We should pay attention to what our moral compass is telling us, follow it with integrity, and row the oars or unfurl the sails, as the situation demands.
By rejecting conscience, certain persons have made shipwreck of their faith.

EVERYDAY INCIVILITIESAlthough one can consider himself a kind and decent person, what others think of us is equally or more important than how we think of ourselves. Interestingly, other people can have a more accurate view of us than we do. Our self-image is partly comprised of how we see ourselves reflected in the eyes of others. People are mostly kind and decent, but may fall into incivility when they have to deal with particular people, problems or situations. Many of us may often fail to treat others with kindness and consideration in the simple everyday activities such as driving, shopping or running errands. In extreme cases, people may so dislike having to deal with the Motor Vehicle Bureau or the IRS for example that they are resigned to mistreating the employees who work there. Surely we should take a lesson from Jesus, who treated even tax collectors–who were more despised in Jesus’ day than our own –with kindness and respect.
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s
sake hath forgiven you.

It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of our Mom (Oma) at the age of 89 at the Mission Memorial Hospital. Inge was predeceased by her son Frank in 1994 and her husband Lothar in 2002. She leaves behind her eldest son Ulf (Georgia), daughter Colleen (Greg) and 4 grand children Lee, Lora, Morgan(Kayle), and Dana and her 6 great grand-children Brayden, Hannah, Brock, Ayva, Myla and Mia and her special friend Bea. Forever in our hearts and memories. No funeral by request.
