Something from Nothing

Harborne Art Gallery presents its new exhibition featuring the abstract art collection and artworks of Steven Cornfield. The title Something from Nothing playfully reflects the perception and the process of producing abstract art.

The exhibition shows a dialogue between the paintings of Steven Cornfield and the work he has collected over the years which have provided his inspiration.

This collection includes works by some of the most prestigious names in British mid century abstract art, American minimalists and British studio ceramics; John Hoyland, Sir Terry Frost, William Gear, Richard Serra, Hans Hartung, Michael Harris and Bernard Leach.

The exhibition – which represents a wonderful world of colours and energy that would not be out of place in New York or London - runs throughout February. Opening times are 9am – 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

Harborne Art Gallery is located at 8 Greenfield Road, Harborne, B17 0EE. You access the gallery via Frametec, the picture framing workshop.

The curator of Harborne Art Gallery, Dominique Bleuel says, “I plan to bring a

variety of styles and artists to Harborne while championing local artists' work. The feedback and appreciation so far is very encouraging.

“Having worked in the past in art galleries, like Cambridge-based Primavera and Stampa in Basel, Switzerland, running my own gallery is a dream come true.”

If you would like to be invited to private views of future exhibitions then you can ask to be put on the mailing list.

The next exhibition, from 6 March to 19 April, will feature the artwork of Stephen King and will be themed around his beautiful landscapes and Alice in Wonderland.

Do you play a musical instrument to a reasonable standard? Would you like to play with a group of friendly locals and take part in occasional performances?

If the answer is yes, Harborne Orchestra is for you. Harborne Orchestra is an independent community orchestra with around 35 musicians led by conductor Pat Ryan.

The orchestra meets every Friday evening during term time from 7.30 to 9.30 and they usually perform three concerts a year.

Founded in 1940, the orchestra meets at the Queen Alexandra College for the Blind, Court Oak Road, Harborne. If you are interested in joining you can go along and listen before committing to anything.

The orchestra would particularly welcome more string players as well as some brass: trombones, a second trumpet and a second horn player.

Harborne Orchestra plays a range of music, somewhat dependent on the musical tastes of the members. Christmas concerts are usually slightly

lighter. The 2013 Christmas concert, at which they were joined by Harborne Primary School Choir, went from Beethoven to the Muppets.

The summer and Easter concerts are usually more 'traditional.' This year the orchestra is experimenting with only doing two concerts; summer and Christmas.

You can find the Harborne Orchestra at:http://harborneorchestra.comwww.facebook.com/harborneorchestra@harborneorch

Or you can get in touch by calling Pat Ryan on 0121 355 1651 or 07751 538 336

“We were so pleased that Gisela Stuart MP officially opened the Onneley Centre on Age UK Birmingham’s behalf. Issues impacting on older people in Birmingham are obviously close to her heart and she is a great supporter of our work across the city. While most of what’s available at Onneley is designed specifically for the over 50s we want the Centre to be used by all.”

An Exciting Spring and Summer at Birmingham Repertory TheatreHot on the heels of Birmingham REP's successful reopening, their Spring and Summer season is filled with celebrations, commemorations, premieres and exciting collaborations.

David Essex returns to his acting roots and rolls up his sleeves for the European premiere of The Dishwashers running until 15 February and a revival of Bryony Lavery’s award-winning play for The REP, Frozen, opens on 7 February.

At the end of February the premiere of Never Try This At Home opens, a disturbing homage to Saturday morning television.

One of the highlights of March and April is a major Brecht celebration curated by Mark Ravenhill and centred around Roxana Silbert’s critically acclaimed production of A Life of Galileo starring Ian McDiarmid, plus a new staging of The Threepenny Opera.

In May The REP premieres the work of Birmingham-born Rachel De-lahay, with her new

play Circles, set on the city’s outer circle bus route and in June, writer Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti returns with the premiere of her latest play, Khandan.

Marking 100 years since the start of the First World War The REP presents a series of war plays including Private Peaceful, Catch 22, Birdsong, War Correspondents and Benjamin Zephaniah’s Refugee Boy.

The REP also welcomes Moon On A Rainbow Shawl, Dial M For Murder, Charlie & Lola’s Extremely New Play, Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood and Alan Ayckbourn’s Woman in Mind.

Lighter nights As the earlier months of the year draw to a close, thoughts turn to spring with milder weather and the clocks going forward.

The approach of lighter nights is something to look forward to, however your local police officers would like to remind you that crime can go up at this time of year.

To help reduce your chances of becoming a victim of burglary or theft, police officers offer this advice:

To keep your home safe:

•Lock away all garden tools and equipment when not in use

•Keep ladders chained up in a garage

• ‘Property mark’ any valuable items with your postcode

•Check fences and gates are in good repair

•Plant thorny shrubs around the edge of your garden to keep burglars out

To keep your car safe:

•Don't leave anything on display – even a carrier bag is a temptation for someone to smash and grab. Thieves steal first and think about value later

•Take all belongings with you when leaving the car – if you can't, lock them in the boot

•Lock all windows and doors whenever you leave your vehicle

•Activate the car alarm on leaving your vehicle, and if the car is not alarmed consider having one professionally fitted

•Never leave keys in the ignition – even for just a few seconds

Friends of the Earth

If you want to get involved in change on a more city-wide basis, then why not volunteer with Birmingham Friends of the Earth? They are always looking for people to help out with their campaigns and projects.

From talking to members of the public, writing articles for our website and newsletter, to planning campaigns and running events, there is plenty that people can get involved with. Find more information on their website www.birminghamfoe.org.uk and if you would like to get involved then email [email protected]

This is not an exhaustive list of every group or project, but the important thing is to find something you're interested in and where you feel you can make a difference.

Giving something backIf you're looking for something a little bit different, why not start volunteering or campaigning in your local area?

Julien Pritchard from Friends of the Earth has some ‘environmental’ suggestions.

Martineau Gardens

Martineau Gardens is a Community Garden, a Social Enterprise and a visitor attraction which aims to inspire people about the natural environment. They have a lot of volunteering opportunities and ways of getting involved. You can find more information on their website www.martineau-gardens.org.uk

Open Weekend - Friday 28th, Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th March 10am-4pm

The Midlands’ only period timber window and door showroom is having their Spring open weekend in March. If you are thinking of changing your windows or doors – in timber or uPVC this year, be sure to take this chance to see some of the best products available.

The Harborne Sash Window Company specialises in high quality bespoke period timber and uPVC windows, doors, roof lanterns and orangeries fully factory finished in a range of colours.

You will be served tea/coffee and cupcakes whilst being able to look at, touch, open and close, and walk through a fabulous display of windows and doors, and sit in a stunning fully furnished orangery.

At the event you can also see and find out about exciting new products in their range including stunning plantation shutters, fitted internally, giving you versatility in light, ventilation and privacy. These offer a stylish and practical alternative to curtains or blinds.

The firm also now offers a seamless integration of their product portfolio to include specially designed fascia, soffits and gutters that are in keeping with your period property.

Many people buy windows and doors just by looking at a corner sample provided by a salesman who comes to their home. Some people even buy windows and doors via the internet without any contact with the product they are purchasing.

The Harborne Sash Window Company is a great source of information. Their knowledge and experience coupled with the showroom will really help you start the process on what is right for your home.

Helping solve financial disputes within families and businessesWhen it comes to money, particularly if there has been a death in the family, tensions can run high and there is often a need to bring in an outside advisor to resolve the matter. In this issue’s ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ feature, we meet Manjit Kaur-Heer, a Solicitor who specialises in dispute resolution.

Manjit advises on disputes over wills and estates, property ownership, commercial matters, insolvency, contractual issues and professional negligence.

If any such disputes arise, then Manjit’s advice is to address issues as early as possible to avoid unnecessary conflict and cost.

Manjit advises that where there are issues of joint ownership or occupation of property, cohabitation by unmarried couples, disabled relatives and second families, there are many opportunities for dispute. Finding a solution when people are already in dispute can be difficult. Accordingly people should seek professional advice before relationships completely break down. This will save heartache and legal fees.

However, if a crisis does arise, Manjit will try to help people find a solution and if necessary take dispute to court.

Manjit has been with the firm for 25 years. Coming from a Sikh background and being fluent in Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu, she finds that her Asian clients are often assisted by her cultural understanding of their situation.

For more information or to make an appointment you can call Manjit on 0121 693 2222

Window donation to warm the heartKind-hearted owners of a Kings Norton glazing company have donated doors and windows worth over £12,000 to support a local family battling Leukaemia.

Finesse Windows, which is based on Melchett Road, Kings Norton, agreed to supply and install new windows and doors at the Hearty family home after hearing about the plight of their seven-year-old son Callum, who is currently fighting the disease.

Callum is currently undergoing treatment at QE Hospital after being diagnosed with Leukaemia 3 years ago and recently Asperger Syndrome, Demand Avoidance and Speech Apraxia.

Russell Bridge, Managing Director at Finesse Windows, said: “When I first heard Callum’s story, I decided that we had to help in some way if we could.

“As a local family firm, we understand the importance of community and I feel strongly that if somebody asks for your help, and if you are able to do so, then you should.

“Having visited the family, we decided we

could best help by installing new, top-rated energy-efficient windows and doors that would help the family keep the house warm for Callum, while keeping energy bills down.”

Finesse installed eight new windows, a pair of French doors and a new Palladio front door to the family home, all of which benefit from the highest energy and security ratings.

Becky and Trevor, Callum’s mother and father, said, “We’re really grateful to the team at Finesse Windows for the support they have given us.

“Keeping the house warm while Callum undergoes treatment has been a real struggle but, with the new windows and doors already making a difference, we can concentrate all our energies on helping him get better.

“Right from the first moment Finesse heard about our story, they have been incredibly supportive and we really can’t thank them enough.”

Callum’s family thank Finesse Window's Russell Bridge for his support (clockwise from back – Trevor, Russell Bridge (Finesse), Becky, Callum and Declan)

All their work complies with the latest British Standards and the highest quality of materials. The BCS team comprises CSSW (Certified Surveyor in Structural Waterproofing) surveyors and builders.

Does your home need a bit more space?Have you considered turning your old cellar or basement into an office, a TV snug, a playroom, a home cinema or even a gym?

This is just what a local family felt as their four boys started to get big. An increasing amount of electronic gadgets and musical instruments were taking over the house so they decided to convert the empty space in their basement for it all to go, and everyone is pleased as punch the kids have a ‘room of their own’.

Basement Conversion Specialists (BCS) transformed their basement bringing with them their combined experience of 37 years in the building trade and specifically 32 years in the preservation industry.

Converted basements can offer so much extra room. BCS enjoys the challenge of bringing to life your dreams and seeing them become reality in a short space of time and within a budget.

BCS has worked with small houses to stately homes, and everything in between. They are experienced in diagnosing and solving preservation problems, but recently they have decided to

Experience peace, strength and happinessA new meditation through music group has been launched in Harborne.

The Mahesh Musical Mediatation Centre is offering mediation courses where you can chant and sing to the sound of Indian classical notes, known as raags, accompanied by traditional Indian musical instruments such as harmonium, sitar and tabla.

Lead by Mahesh, this is the first of its kind in Birmingham, although meditation through music is increasing in popularity across the world.

In the words of Ravi Shankar, “Meditation makes life musical and music can lead to a deep sense of inner peace.”

Meditation is normally silent, but this form of meditation uses the raaga melodic scale of notes, which in Sanskrit means ‘to please,' to help people meditate.

Mahesh said, “In ancient India seven basic musical notes were discovered that are derived from sounds of nature or the song of various animals. Through meditation we can feel that each note corresponds to a certain chakra, that is a part of our body, or energy wheel within us.”

"Hiya! And a happy new year to everyone.

Well I’ve never known a wetter start to the year. Have you?

A lot of weather warnings went out and anyone thinking of heading to the coast was told to be especially careful.

Our Valerie has got a caravan in Devon that she always goes to for New Year and I said to her to follow the safety advice off the telly to “Avoid Big Waves.”

I felt she was particularly at risk on account of two things about her - she has got very curly hair - and she is very friendly.

I made her promise to take her hair straighteners and that if she saw anyone she knew walking on the seafront, she would just shout ‘Hiya!’ I didn’t want her to become a victim of big waves.

In other weather related news when we had all that rain over Christmas. The fellah and his

wife who live in the corner house were getting a lot of complaints from the neighbours.

This was on account of the funny looking boat he started building on his front drive and all the different pairs of animals that he was having delivered. When two camels turned up that was the last straw. The whole street got the hump!

All the best and keep having a laugh xxxx

p.s If there’s a hose pipe ban in July I will want to know why! Will you ?
