a two-seater. The heavily modified body is made primarily of aluminum, with the hood, the rear hatch and other compo-nents made of carbon.

The low weight of the superstruc-ture leads to significant secondary effects in other components of the vehicle, such as the transmission, the chassis and the brake system. As a result, the Audi quat-tro concept weighs just 2,866.01 lb, almost exactly the same as the Sport quattro from 1984. This once again moves Audi, the pioneer of lightweight construc-tion, to the head of the pack.

I n a n o t h e r m o v e that ben-efits the vehicle’s w e i g h t , the eight-cylinder engine from the production model has been replaced under the hood by a turbocharged, inline five-cylinder engine that can trace its roots back to another Audi sports car – the TT RS. In the Audi quattro concept, the longitudinal FSI turbo produces 408 hp and accelerates the car from 0 to 60 mph in less than 3.9 seconds. Torque is distributed as needed via a six-speed manu-al transmission.

The Audi quat-tro concept uses the latest evolutionary stage of the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system to deliv-er its power to the road. The key innova-tion, the crown-gear center differential, is compact, lightweight, and can vary the distribution of power between the front and rear axles over a broad range, enabling the quattro drive system to react within milliseconds to coax the maximum of fun and safety out of every last bit of torque.

DesignBrawny, compact, powerful: The

appearance of the Audi quattro con-cept makes no secret of its potential. Although the genes of the elegant Audi A5 and RS 5 Coupés are impossible to overlook, the appearance of the show car is far more aggres-sive and extro-verted.

With its exterior d i m e n -s i o n s (length x width x height) of

14.04 ft x 6.10 ft x 4.36 ft and wheelbase of 8.53 ft, the Audi quattro con-cept fits neatly into the sports car segment.

The low roof also reduces the height of the greenhouse and thus lowers the vehicle’s

visual center of gravity. The muscu-lar C-pillar is clearly an homage to the design of the Ur-quattro. As with that model, the trademark four rings can be found at the transition to the side of the vehicle, but in this case

they are stamped into the sheet metal. Together with the large center-locking, 20-inch wheels in a 7-twin-spoke design, the lines make for extremely dynamic

and powerful proportions when viewed from the side.

A significant feature of the front end is the stark single-frame grille. The elimination of the chrome frame lends it a functional and technical character. Large, upright air intakes at the corners

of the bumper underscore the perfor-mance of the power plant.

The strongly molded front skirt includes integrated carbon elements. This lightweight, yet extremely strong material is also used for the rear hatch and the hood, which are unpainted on

the inside in order to use the visual quality of the material as a design ele-ment. The large spoiler integrated into the rear hatch is also made of carbon and extends automatically as needed and can be adjusted for maximum downforce.

InteriorThe interior of the

coupé is reduced and clean. The dashboard is very slen-der and seems to float over the separate center console. Shortening the wheelbase meant losing the rear seat of the RS 5 on which it is based. In its place is a shelf for hel-mets or luggage. Awaiting the two occupants are filigree bucket seats, during whose development the issue of lightweight design played a cen-tral role.

The classic driver orientation (“wrap-around architecture” in the designer jargon) of the cockpit is typical Audi. The control unit for the MMI touch system and the shift lever for the six-speed transmission are located on the

extremely slender center console. The instrument cluster is com-

pletely digital. The large, three-dimen-sional visor-like display contains all of

the information required by the driver and thus also replaces the classic MMI central display. The clear graphics, the stark black-and-white contrast and the subtle red highlights are precise and modernly interpreted – an indicator instrument for a driving machine, with no superfluous touches. The driver has the choice between an everyday mode, which combines the indication of the

speed and engine revs with the content of the MMI, and racing mode, whose graphics revisit and refine the digital instrument of the Ur-quattro from the

1980s.The driver will find

another reminder of the Ur-quattro’s cockpit on the sides of the cockpit cowl: On both the right and left sides are four flat buttons. The ones on the left control the stopwatch function in racing mode, and the ones on the right are for the menu of the MMI system.

The successful quattro prin-ciple

In the Audi quattro concept, Audi uses the latest evolutionary stage of its permanent all-wheel drive system for longitudinal engines – the quattro drive with self-locking crown-gear center dif-ferential and torque vectoring. 30 years after the debut of the first quattro at the Geneva Motor Show in 1980, Audi has once again expanded its lead over the competition.n

The Executive Board of Directors of the Florida Autobody Collision Alliance announced that it has appointed Cathy Mills its first Executive Director. Mills assumed the responsibili-ties of the position on January 1, 2011.

Dave McBroom, President of the FACA State Executive Board, made the announce-ment. “The FACA Executive Board of Directors, after a long thorough search, we are pleased to announce the selec-tion of Cathy Mills as the first Full Time Executive Director. Cathy’s extensive experience in the collision industry makes her a perfect candidate for the position...Her background as a multi shop manager, admin-istrator and trainer will give FACA the shot in the arm we need to move on to the next level.”

“It is such a privilege to have this opportunity to be the first Executive Director of FACA.” Mills said. “I am both honored and flattered to serve on behalf of all of Florida’s colli-sion repairers and our affiliate members. Working side by side with our Board of Directors, I believe that we all have the passion to do our best to achieve so

Florida Autobody Collision Alliance Names First Executive Directormuch for our industry. With all our mem-bers and affiliates working together and doing the right things for the right rea-

sons, we can make a difference. I am so looking forward to this journey.”

Mills started her career in the col-lision industry over 25 years as manager of a dealership body shop in Jacksonville, FL. In 1991 she had the opportunity to work with Randy Waldron owner of

Jacksonville Collision Centers before they were sold to Sterling Autobody. Mills who was promoted to the Florida regional team did all the office train-

ing for the new Florida Sterling shops with Waldron. She describes him as a true vision-ary in the industry, her mentor and a great friend. She stayed with Sterling for 15 years devel-oping training procedures.

“For two and a half years, FACA’s Executive Board of Directors and the 6 Chapter Boards have all given as much time as possible to the FACA and still try to find time to run their respective shops. At the end of every day I feel that I have fallen short in represent-ing FACA’s members and affili-ates,” McBroom said. “Having Cathy onboard fulltime daily to provide the day to day tasks of coordinating between our

chapters will be a huge plus for us. I want to personally thank

my board members for their support in this selection process, thanks to our sponsor affiliates who have contribut-ed financially and a special thanks to Aaron Schulenburg of SCRS and Jordon Hendler of WMABA for their guidance through the process.” n

Automotive technicians and repair shops now have a new, free resource for advertising themselves as qualified professionals to prospective custom-ers. AutoTechnician.org (http://www.autotechnician.org) uses a rigorous 25-question pre-screening assessment to ensure that the site features only qualified, experienced mechanics in its national membership directory. In this way, consumers are certain of having a reliable online resource for researching and locating the best choices for auto repair in their locale.

“Common perceptions among the general public are that car mechanics are untrust-worthy and that it is extremely difficult to find a really compe-tent one,” said AutoTechnician.org founder John Kelly. “I wanted to do something about this especially since the major industry association that does certification does not provide a searchable directory of those qualified service professionals.”

While it does not certify technicians or regulate them in any way, AutoTechnician.org does fill the gap for finding capable professionals. “We are a rapidly growing online resource for finding and registering the most experienced auto repair professionals in the United States and Canada,” said Kelly.

With more than 25 years of experience in the automotive service and repair industry, Kelly worked as a Class “A” techni-cian in independent auto repair shops for the majority of his career. He has been designated an ASE® Master Auto Technician by the Institute for Automotive Service Excellence since 1991, holds numerous certifications from a variety of institutions and taught advanced level automotive courses and semi-nars throughout the Northeast region. In addition to founding

AutoTechnician.org’s pre-screen-ing questions are written and reviewed by Kelly, the website’s honorary con-tributors and other appointed industry professionals. Test questions change regularly but always cover diagnostics, the most difficult aspect of auto repair. Many are contributed by members

to ensure a real-world experience for test takers, and all questions are scruti-nized by the contributor panel for rel-evance and reading and comprehension requirements. “The combined experi-ence in our panel totals more than 200 years of field service,” stated Kelly. “So test-takers know that the questions will be challenging but fair.”

“The 2011 Range Rover retains its position as one of the world’s most com-plete luxury vehicles. Its combination of reduced CO2 emissions and superior engine performance continue to make it a clear industry benchmark. And with the introduction of our all-new ‘super diesel’, we see the Range Rover deliv-ering over 30mpg for the first time.” says Phil Popham, Land Rover Managing Director.

A new, class-leading V8 diesel engine, new 8-speed transmission, two significant Terrain Response® upgrades and subtle external styling all combine to ensure the 2011 Range Rover retains its crown as king of the luxury SUV seg-ment.

The LR-TDV8 4.4-litre with paral-lel sequential turbocharging replaces the outstanding LR-TDV8 3.6-litre and is unique to the Range Rover. An all-new ‘super-diesel’, the LR-TDV8 combines superior power and massive torque with unparalleled levels of refinement. Despite the extra performance, this sub-lime V8 engine is cleaner too, deliver-ing even lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions than its predecessor and

meeting the stringent EU5 emissions standards. The headline news, though, is that the combined cycle fuel consump-tion of the new LR-TDV8 4.4-litre is just 30.1mpg, making this the first Range Rover ever to better 30mpg.

With 313PS and 700Nm torque, the Range Rover’s new powertrain matches power with conscience, reducing CO2 emissions by an impressive 14 percent. The new diesel engine is helped in this respect by its mar-riage to an impres-sive new, electron-ically controlled, ZF 8HP70, 8-speed automatic gear-box tuned by Land Rover engineers to combine silky smooth shifting with exception-ally rapid response and outstanding fuel economy. This daunting combi-nation is enough to catapult the Range Rover from

rest to 60mph in a mere 7.5 seconds and complete the 50mph-75mph dash in just 5.1 seconds.

Available on 4.4-litre LR-TDV8 mod-els, this ‘smart’ transmission integrates with the diesel engine to deliver the most efficient operating regime in all conditions. To reflect the performance of

The past decade has been revolu-tionary for several parts of our society, but few sectors have seen as much change since 2000 as the auto industry.

Ten short years ago, automakers were touting the number of cupholders in the cabin and the increased off-road capa-bilities of family haulers. Today, these same companies are racing to offer increasingly hands-free mobile communication, eye-popping fuel economy and technologies aimed at helping drivers avoid accidents.

“Cars have become more like brains on wheels,” said Sheryl Connelly, Ford’s global trends manager. “Consumers today want to stay connected and they want the drive to be an experience, especially since the amount of time Americans spend in the car has nearly doubled in the last 10 years.”

Many of the changes in automo-biles were driven by the ever-evolving ways people use mobile devices and the Internet to consume information, com-municate with others and even engage in commerce. According to the UN agency, about five billion people use cell phones while weekly Internet usage is up 560 percent.

Decade of Change: Top 10 Ways Cars Have Changed in 10 YearsThis trend has exploded in the past

decade, redefining the way we use our cars. As the calendar flips to 2011, and automakers kick off a new chapter of inno-vation at the North American International Auto Show, here are our Top 10 ways the industry has changed since 2000:

Top 10 in 2010Infotainment: Vehicle options 10

years ago, such as in-dash compact disc players and speed control systems, are now standard features. Consumers’ desire to have constant access to information helped spawn technologies such as voice-activated controls, real-time traffic and Wi-Fi mobile hot spots now found on many 2011 Ford products.

Entertainment: The days of packing a clumsy library of CDs or VHS movie tapes are gone. Today consumers have a wide variety of compact ways to be entertained while behind the wheel. A decade ago, for instance, satellite radio was not available in cars. Today, more than half of new pas-senger cars are equipped with the service, according to Ward’s Auto. Ford vehicles equipped with SyNC® can stream Internet radio like Pandora or can play music from

USB plugged-in digital music players or memory sticks.

Taking out the guesswork: Today’s vehicles are equipped with new technolo-gies that make driving easier, including self-parallel parking, rear back-up cameras and rain-sensing wipers. Terrain manage-ment, a new Ford feature available on the 2011 Explorer, lets the driver select the type of terrain the vehicle is driving through, such as sand, snow or pavement, and the vehicle then adjusts wheel spin, throttle inputs and other inputs accordingly.

Accident avoidance: Automotive safety has also advanced dramatically. In 2000, the average car had at least two airbags. Today, most vehicles have at least four, with some models equipped with up to 10 airbags. The airbags themselves also have improved. Ford is the first automaker to introduce inflatable second row safety belts.

The biggest change, however, is in the area of accident avoidance. For exam-ple, Ford’s new Curve Control, available on the 2011 Explorer, monitors a driver’s speed entering fast, sharp corners then corrects

Ford is working with consumer electronics leader Best Buy to offer a 240-volt home charging station for the company’s all-new Ford Focus Electric battery electric vehicle and future elec-tric vehicles in the United States. Best Buy intends to sell the charging sta-tion and offer complete consultation and installation services through its Geek Squad subsidiary and third-party licensed electrical contractors.

“With fast charge times, low pric-ing and a user-friendly design, the 240-volt home charge station will be on the shopping list of most Focus Electric buyers,” said Mike Tinskey, manager of vehicle electrification and infrastruc-ture, Ford Motor Company. “By working with Best Buy to offer the charging sta-tion installation service solution, Ford is providing electric vehicle customers in the U.S. with a familiar, trusted source to turn to for their installation needs.”

Ford Working With Best Buy to Offer Focus Electric Charging Station Sales, Installation and Support

After purchasing the all-electric vehicle, Focus Electric owners can work with their dealer to set up an installation appointment through Best Buy. Focus Electric charging stations also can be purchased through any of Best Buy’s nearly 1,200 stores nationwide or online at www.bestbuy.com. Since Best Buy’s Geek Squad is a fully owned, in-house service, customers can purchase the charging station and schedule installa-tion from a single point of contact.

During the appointment, a Geek Squad agent will conduct a quick elec-trical audit to ensure the residence can support the 240-volt charging station. Once the residence passes the electrical audit, the Geek Squad agent will sched-ule a master electrician for a hassle-free charging station installation.

“This opportunity enables us to extend an existing strategic relationship with Ford and deliver another convenient

solution to people who are anxious to embrace the latest transportation tech-nologies,” said Chad Bell, senior direc-tor of New Business Solutions Group at Best Buy. “As more people gravitate toward electric-powered transportation, home energy management becomes an important consideration, and Best Buy intends to be actively engaged in pro-viding convenient, easy-to-access solu-tions from both our retail and service support operations.”

This latest Ford and Best Buy collab-oration builds on an already established relationship. The two companies have been working to help consumers in the U.S. understand and utilize the industry-leading SyNC® in-car communications system. Through Best Buy Mobile, the retailer will offer specially trained associ-ates to assist with Ford SyNC education,

The Chevrolet Volt is the 2011 North American Car of the year and the Ford Explorer is the 2011 North American Truck of the year.

The winners were revealed Monday morning, January 10, at a news conference at the North American International Auto Show.

While hybrid vehicles have won four times in the 18 years that the awards have been given this was the first win for a vehicle that can move a meaningful distance on electric power alone.

The winners were chosen by a jury of 49 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada.

The awards are unique in the United States because instead of being given by a single media outlet they are

Chevrolet Volt and Ford Explorer win North American Car and Truck of the Yearawarded by a coalition of automotive journal-ists from the United States and Canada who represent maga-zines, television, radio, newspapers and web sites.

The awards are designed to recognize the most outstand-ing new vehicles of

the year. These vehicles are benchmarks in their segments based on fac-tors including innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar.

It is the fourth time General Motors has won the North American Car of

the year. Most recently, the Chevrolet Malibu was the 2008 North American Car of the year.

It was the second year in a row that a Ford was named the North American Truck of the year. Last year the win-ner was the Transit Connect. It is also the seventh time a Ford has been the

“It’s a great honor to be recognized as the North American Car of the year,” said GM CEO Dan Akerson. “Since development began, we believed the Volt had the potential to transform the automotive industry. The Volt is the first electric vehicle to win the pres-tigious North American Car of the year award, and the first vehicle ever to receive the industry’s highest automotive, technology, and environmental recognitions.”

“It’s a proud moment for Ford, our employees and our customers to have Explorer named North American Truck of the year,” said Mark Fields, Ford president of The Americas. “Winning this honor for the third consecutive year confirms our One Ford plan is working to deliver vehicles people truly want and value, with industry-leading quality, fuel efficiency, safety and smart technology.”

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently issued a consumer alert titled “Auto Warranties, Routine Maintenance and Repairs: Is Using the Dealer a Must?” The alert relates to vehicle warranties and clearly lays out the provi-sions of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and the protections it provides the motoring public. The alert acts as helpful and clear guidance for consumers as to their warranty rights.

The National Federation of the Blind today commended President Barack Obama for signing into law the Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Act (S. 841), which will protect the blind and other pedestrians from injury as a result of silent vehicle technology.

“The National Federation of the Blind is pleased that this critical legisla-tion has been signed into law, preserv-ing the right to safe and independent

to come as new vehicle technologies become more prevalent. We look for-ward to working with the Department of Transportation throughout the regula-tory process.”

Because blind pedestrians can-not locate and evaluate traffic using their vision, they must listen to traffic to discern its speed, direction, and other attributes in order to travel safely and independently. Other people, including

pedestrians who are not blind, bicyclists, runners, and small children, also benefit from hearing the sound of vehicle engines. New vehicles that employ hybrid or electric engine technology can be silent, rendering them extremely dangerous in situations where vehicles and pedes-trians come into proximity with each other.n

President Signs Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Acttravel for the blind,” said Dr. Marc Maurer, President of the National Federation of the Blind. “The blind, like all pedestri-ans, must be able to travel to work, to school, to church, and to other places in our communities, and we must be able to hear vehicles in order to do so. This law, which is the result of collabora-tion among blind Americans, automo-bile manufacturers, and legislators, will benefit all pedestrians for generations

Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) engineers are taking high performance to a new level with the 2011 Ford Shelby G T 5 0 0 ,

result-ing in a car that has a n all-new aluminum-block engine, even better driving dynamics and handling, improved fuel economy and more horsepower than ever.

“The SVT team continues to push the performance standards of the Shelby to even higher levels and bet-ter refinement,” said Jost Capito, direc-tor of global performance vehicles and motorsports business development. “All the changes we made reflect a desire for even better handling and outstanding driving dynamics – from weight savings to improved balance.”

Weight savings, new technology head-line all-new aluminum engine

The 2011 Shelby GT500 is pow-ered by an all-new aluminum-block 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 engine, which produces 550 horsepower and 510 ft.-lb. of torque, a 10 horsepower increase versus the 2010 model. The engine also is 102 pounds lighter than its predecessor, delivering a better power-to-weight ratio, improved fuel economy, acceleration, han-dling and steering precision.

“Cutting weight to improve performance is a tradition among hot rodders,” said Carroll Shelby, founder of Shelby American. “It might not be as sexy as adding more horse-

The new engine uses state-of-the-art Plasma Transferred Wire Arc (PTWA)

liner coating, a process that applies a 150-micron composite coating that contains nanoparticles on the internal

surfaces of engine

i n d e r bores, replac-

ing cast-iron liners typically used in alu-minum engine blocks. The Intellectual Property Owners Education Foundation honored the inventors of the Ford-pat-ented PTWA technology with the 2009 National Inventor of the year Award.

This is the first Ford applica-tion of the technology, and it offers improved overall performance and durability, along with functional ben-efits of reduced friction between piston

rings and cylinder bores, improved heat transfer due to increased surface contact area and a weight savings of 8.5 pounds compared to a typical steel-sleeved alu-minum block. A mechanical roughening process provides higher material adhe-sion for the spray coating.

The PTWA process uses air and electricity to create a plasma jet of 35,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which melts a steel wire that is fed into a rotat-

ing spray gun. Using atomized air, the melted steel wire is blown into a

specially machined surface of the aluminum-block engine cylinder bore. In the process of melting and applying the metal to the sur-face, the steel wire oxidizes, creat-

ing a composite coating consisting of both iron and iron oxide.

“Whether you’re looking to take the GT500 out on the streets or have some

fun at the track, this car will satisfy the most discriminating performance driving enthusiasts.” Jost Capito,

Director Of Global Performance Vehicles And Motorsports Business Development

As the 112th Congress convened last month, members of Congress had an opportunity to take bipartisan action that would have a positive outcome for every American who owns and operates a car, truck, motorcycle or other motor vehicle. Passage of the Motor Vehicle Owners’

Broad Range of Organizations, Motoring Consumers Show Support for Right to Repair Act

Right to Repair Act would ensure that vehicle owners have a choice of where they bring their vehicle for repairs, ensur-ing that vehicle repair is affordable and convenient for all Americans, according to the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA).

“We want to congratulate those who will be taking the oath of office as members of the 112th Congress and urge them to take up the Right to Repair Act immediately to demonstrate their ability to work together on behalf of the American people,” said Kathleen

Schmatz, president and CEO of AAIA. “A wide variety of constitu-encies have come out in support of the Right to Repair Act includ-ing those representing the mili-tary and their families, senior citi-zens, motorcycle riders, recyclers and organizations representing consumers and rural communities. Consumers benefit from competi-tion and these groups know that their members are at a disadvan-tage when neighborhood auto repair shops are denied ready access to non-proprietary service information and tools needed to properly maintain today’s highly sophisticated motor vehicles.”

State and national consumer and industry organizations repre-senting millions of Americans sup-port passage of the Right to Repair Act including the Automobile Association of America (AAA), American Military Society, National Grange, Automotive Recyclers Association, Consumer Electronics Association, Engine Repower Council, Motorcycle Riders Foundation, RetireSafe and 60 Plus.

Ford Motor Company recently announced it will add 7,000 new hourly and salaried jobs between this year and next in the United States.

This year alone, Ford is adding nearly 4,000 hourly jobs at several of its U.S. plants, including 1,800 at Louisville Assembly Plant, which is preparing to launch the next-generation Ford Escape late in the year. Ford also will add 750 sala-ried engineering jobs in product devel-opment and manufacturing. Next year,

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has listed 134 different chemicals that will be screened for their potential to disrupt endocrine systems in humans and animals. The EPA notes that endocrine disruptors represent a serious health concern, especially for children who are still developing. The list of chemicals that have been identi-fied for screening include some that may be found in sources of drinking water. The chemicals listed are those used in solvents, gasoline, plastics, personal care products, pesticides and pharmaceuti-

EPA Screens Chemicals for Potential Endocrine Disruptorscals.

Lisa P. Jackson, EPA administrator, said, “Endocrine disruptors represent a serious health concern for the American people, especially children. American’s today are exposed to more chemicals in our products, our environment and our bodies than ever before, and it is essential that the EPA takes every step to gather information and prevent risks.” Explaining the effort, she said the EPA is “using the best available science to examine a larger list of chemicals and ensure that they are not contaminating

the water we drink and exposing adults and children to potential harm.”

The endocrine disruptor screening is currently proceeding on three fronts. Step 1 will be to develop and validate tests. Step 2 will be to select chemicals for testing and screening. Step 3 will be to implement the policies and proce-dures the EPA will use to require screen-ing. the vehicle. Other examples from Ford include a collision warning system that detects moving vehicles ahead; Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) that alerts the driver when approaching vehicles enter the system’s defined blind spot zone; and cross-traffic alert to sense oncoming traffic when the driver is backing out of a parking spot.

Fuel economy: In the early 2000s, bigger was better. Vehicles were large and powerful and boasted off-road capabil-ity rarely used by the average consumer who purchased them. Consumers wanted cars that could transport large amounts of cargo and lots of passengers.

Cars and the engines that power them are shrinking and have become more fuel efficient. According to Edmunds Best-Selling Vehicles, the most popular models in 2000 were trucks. That same report from 2009 shows small passenger cars topping the list.

According to the EPA, fuel econo-my between 2000 and 2010 improved for the industry from 19.8 mpg to 22.5 mpg - a 14 percent improvement. Increasing numbers of consumers are also choosing smaller, fuel-sipping four-cylinders. The percentage of fuel-efficient four-cylinder engines increased from 31.7 percent to 48.4 percent between 2000 and 2010. For example, the four-cylinder version of the

Ford Fusion, which attracted 55 percent of buyers in 2007, now accounts for more than 70 percent of sales.

Built-in navigation: TripTik® gave way to MapQuest, which soon led to the first commercially available automo-tive navigation system in the late 1990s. According to Berg Insight Research, there are an estimated 150 million in-dash, aftermarket, compact personal and navi-gation-enabled mobile guidance devices used globally. Today, navigation systems are integrated into vehicles and are much more comprehensive.

Creature comforts: Consumers today enjoy a more comfortable ride. Better interior materials, sleeker interior designs, heated and cooled seats that automatical-ly adjust driver position, remote start and more storage capacity all offer more com-fort and convenience. Even a hands-free power liftgate that opens with the wave of a foot underneath the rear bumper can be found on Ford’s new C-MAX.

Customization: Ford has responded to the trend of an increased desire for personalization by adding features in its vehicles such as ambient lighting colors that can be changed to fit the driver’s mood, driver’s seats with customizable settings that adjust automatically with the push of a button, even decal kits for the new Fiesta.

Security: Keyless remotes, alarms and warning systems, and anti-theft systems

have come a long way toward making life on the go safer for many. For example, Ford and Lincoln vehicles come with tech-nologies such as SyNC’s 911 Assist(TM) and Vehicle Health Report, or MyKey®, which allows parents to restrict vehicle speeds when a teen driver is behind the wheel. Intelligent Access with push-button start allows Ford or Lincoln drivers to start the engine by simply carrying the key fob as they approach and enter the vehicle.

Paint colors: Brighter, more vibrant paint colors are edging their way into con-sumers’ hearts. Black and silver still top the list, but colors like Lime Squeeze found on the Ford Fiesta or yellow Blaze found on the new Focus have become more popular. New paints mixed with glass or metal flecks have also changed the way cars look.

Next 10 yearsThe next decade will bring more

revolutionary change for both the auto industry and American consumers. Look for higher gas prices, better lithium-ion batteries, alternative fuels, more advanced safety technologies and more connectiv-ity such as vehicle-to-vehicle systems that will allow vehicles to “talk” to each other via wireless communications embedded into the car.

“People are used to living with technology,” said Connelly. “That’s why companies always have to think ahead.

“North American Truck of the year,” a category it has dominated.

The Volt won with 233 points fol-lowed by the Hyundai Sonata with 163 and the Nissan Leaf electric with 94.

The Explorer won with 253 points while the Jeep had 138 and the Durango 99.

“The Volt seamlessly bridges the

gulf between today’s liquid fueling infrastructure and the plugged-in elec-tric future,” commented juror Lindsay Brooke of Automotive Engineering International.

Mark Phelan, the auto critic of The Detroit Free Press said the Explorer offers “class-leading fuel economy and technology and features you can’t get in luxury crossovers that cost twice as much.”

To be eligible a vehicle must be

all new or “substantially changed.” The jurors considered dozens of new vehicles before sending their ballots to Michelle Collins, a partner at Deloitte & Touche early in December.

On December 16th the three car and truck finalists were announced. But only Ms. Collins knew the winners until she handed over envelopes to Karl Brauer of Edmunds.com, a member of the awards’ organizing committee. Mr. Brauer announced the winners.n

wide are looking to their members of Congress to protect their right to safe, affordable vehicle repair by cosponsor-ing and voting for the Right to Repair Act,” said Ray Pohlman, president of

the Coalition for Auto Repair Equality (CARE). “The enthusiastic grassroots support of Right to Repair continues to gain momentum and sends a strong message to Congress that motoring con-sumers want this issue heard, cospon-sored and passed. Tens of thousands

of consumers have sent emails and let-ters of support to their elected officials requesting passage of Right to Repair and thousands have joined the rapidly growing social media community to join the conversation and follow the legisla-tive developments.”n

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) and California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) have urged the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to re-evaluate claims made in its new draft cancer risk estimate within the agency’s assessment of the risks of ingesting hexavalent chromium (Cr6). They believe the EPA has undercounted some findings in its current study draft.

The EWG and OEHHA want the EPA to recalculate their cancer risk esti-mate relative to hexavalent chromium. According to an EWG senior scientist, Rebecca Sutton, “The EPA must adjust its evaluation of adenoma and carcinoma incidence documented in the National Toxicology Program (NTP) study and alter its risk calculations accordingly … Proper assessment of tumor incidence may well reveal an increased risk associ-ated with exposure to hexavalent chro-mium in drinking water.”

The EPA defended its study pro-cess in a statement:

“The EPA absolutely has a drink-ing water standard for total chromi-um, which includes chromium-6 (also

Stricter Chromium Review Requested by Environmentalistsknown as hexavalent chromium), and we require water systems to test for it. This standard is based on the best available science and is enforceable by law. Ensuring safe drinking water for all Americans is a top priority for the EPA. The agency regularly re-evaluates drinking water standards and, based on new science on chromium-6, had already begun a rigorous and compre-hensive review of its health effects. In September, we released a draft of that scientific review for public comment. When this human health assessment is finalized in 2011, the EPA will carefully review the conclusions and consider all relevant information, including the Environmental Working Group’s study, to determine if a new standard needs to be set.”

In the EWG letter to the EPA, Sutton highlighted three major points:

There is sufficient evidence that hexavalent chromium causes cancer through a mutagenic mode of action, such that the EPA’s use of strict linear modeling is appropriate for risk assess-ment.

A re-analysis of NTP cancer data

may be necessary to account for study animals whose organs were harvested but not assessed for tumors, as indicated by the OEHHA staff.

Since hexavalent chromium is already classified as a known human carcinogen via inhalation and, according to this draft document, a likely human carcinogen via oral exposure, the EPA must consider it to be a known human carcinogen.

Collision shops use many refinish-ing products in their facilities as well as perform sand, grind and weld proce-dures, all which may present the oppor-tunity for hexavalent chromium to exist.

The U.S. Department of Labor has indicated that hexavalent chromium is a metal shown to cause cancer in some workers exposed to it. Evidence demon-strates that workers exposed to hexava-lent chromium are at a higher risk of developing lung cancer, asthma, skin damage and destruction of nasal epi-thelia. More than 500,000 Americans are exposed to the cancer-causing metal. These Americans include steel workers, welders, chrome platers, and paint and pigment manufacturers.n

The new engine also has its roots in the iconic Ford GT. The new 5.4-liter engine is an evolution of the GT engine, with improved block structure through the use of a unique bulkhead chilled process and six-bolt billet main bear-ing caps. This new advanced engine will exceed Ford GT performance with its traditional supercharger technol-ogy.

“The Ford GT has solidified itself as one of the world’s most coveted supercars. To make improvements to the engine from this supercar and make it available in a Mustang is impressive,” said Kerry Baldori, SVT global perfor-mance vehicle chief functional engineer. “The aluminum-block engine is robust and strong enough to pro-duce the performance numbers and dura-bility our customers demand.”

More engine sound, less road noise

For 2011, Shelby GT500 also benefits from NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) improvements. Overall

Shelby GT500 From Page 15road noise is reduced by 20

percent versus the 2010 Shelby. Actions under-

taken to achieve this improvement

include addi-tional sound-d e a d e n i n g material on either side of the instrument

panel, addition-al sound absorp-

tion behind inte-rior trim panels, and

a rear wheel arch liner to reduce noise on gravel or

wet surfaces – all resulting in the driver hearing more exhaust and engine

sound and less road and air noise.GT500 gets a new exhaust for

2011, roaring with an even more aggressive sound than the 2010 model. The 2.75-inch exhaust with all-new tuning helped to deliver the additional 10 horsepower.

“Whether you’re looking to take the GT500 out on the

streets or have some fun at the track,” Capito says, “this car will

satisfy the most discriminating perfor-mance driving enthusiasts.”n

A better charging solutionThe Ford Focus Electric charging

station can be easily installed, replaced or upgraded without the use of tools due to its innovative design and mount-ing bracket. The 240-volt home charging station will allow Focus Electric owners to fully charge their cars in as little as three to four hours – charging in half the time as the Nissan Leaf.

Designed and produced to be compact and easy to install, the Ford charging station offers Focus Electric owners multiple advantages over com-petitive systems:

Nonpermanent installation: The charging unit plugs into a 240-volt out-let instead of being hard-wired into the electrical breaker box, making removal and replacement a simple unplug and plug back in operation in the event the owner moves

Single point of contact for pur-chase and installation: Best Buy and Geek Squad will sell, deliver, install and service the home charging station, including contracting any additional home elec-trical needs for 240-volt service. Best Buy also will handle warranty and repair claims for the charging station

Lower price: Based on current plans, the home charging station with standard installation is expected to retail for approximately $1,499, as much as 30

percent less than competitors’ systemsFaster charging: With its maxi-

mum 32-amp charging capability, Focus Electric owners with the 240-volt home charging station can get a full charge in as little as three to four hours – charging in half the time as the Nissan Leaf

When the connector is plugged in to the vehicle’s charge port, conve-niently located between the driver’s door and front wheel well, it activates a light ring that loops around the port twice in acknowledgement of connectivity. The light ring then illuminates in quadrants as the vehicle charges. Flashing quad-rants represent charge in progress and solid-lit quadrants show stages of charge completion. When the entire ring is sol-idly lit, the vehicle is fully charged.n
