GOODBYEAt the end of this half term we are saying ‘goodbye’ to Mrs Whawell who has done tremendous work as an LSA for the last eight years. We wish her good luck for the future.

CAR PARKING IN BELLE VUE ROAD

At the end of the school day Belle Vue Road is very busy. The congestion is added to if parents park or wait in Belle Vue Road and this increases the potential danger to school students going home. Could you please consider not parking in Belle Vue Road and if you do park there please do not block the drives of houses.

Year 7 and Year 9 football teams are playing against St. Martins on Thursday 3rd February. These matches will decide 4th/5th placed teams in the local schools football league.

Year 8/9 cricket team entered a local schools area indoor cricket tournament and were runners up (this may be good enough to qualify for the Leicestershire and Rutland County Schools Tournament).Year 7 cricket team came 4th at the same tournament.

Sporting Achievements Our Family of primary schools have received basketball coaching from top coach Igor Mirkovic and by popular demand and extended schools funding, we have him back in Heathfield this term running a lunchtime club!

~Year 7 and 8 PE GandT students have had more practical sessions at WBCC.

~On Wed 2nd Feb I took our 2 Sports Ambassadors Abi Liston and Graham Baggott plus 2 yr 8 students, Annabel Stocks and Liam Tillin, to an Olympic Leadership event. Hopefully this will lead to work based around the Olympic and paralympic values in schools

~I trained Manorfield year 6’s to be Playground Leaders to lead activities at lunchtimes.

School NurseWe have a new school nurse, Sarah Fenwick who will be starting after half term. Sarah will be coming into school on a weekly basis running a ‘drop-in’ session for students.

REFURBISHMENT!

ENGLISH DEPARTMENTREFURBISHMENT!

It has been a long time coming, but the English Department have now been refurbished! Well nearly, the last room is under refurbishment as this goes to press! Jamie and Colin (premises officers) have done a great job – especially with the murals on the back walls.

The rooms are now bright and airy and are a pleasure for the staff to teach in. But don’t just take our words for it – here are some pupil comments:

...Do you remember

what the English

rooms used to look like?

“They’re really wicked!” Johbe Upton (7EC)

“They’re really comfortable and much warmer. I don’t mind coming to English now!” Libbie Leach (7EC)

“They are so much brighter and more pleasant to be in!” Mitchell Simmons (8GH)

YOUR SCHOOL NEEDS YOU......TO BE A PARENT GOVERNOR!

We now have a number of parent governor vacancies at Heathfield and it is very important for the school, that parents’ views are heard at governors meetings. There are 4 governor meetings a year in school, they are in the evening and usually last about 2 hours. You can be a governor if your child is at this school already or in year 6 and will be coming here in September. Anyone can be a governor - you do not have to have any special qualifications. So if you would like to be a governor or would like to chat about the possibility, please call Diane Buckingham (Clerk) or Graham Jones (Head) on 01455 842149

ICT SOFTWARE FOR USE AT HOME

Lots of free or cheap software is available to download or buy. Check out the link on the school website for details. (http://www.heathfield.leics.sch.uk/downloads.asp).Some of these are used in ICT lessons and it would be helpful if pupils could also use them at home. These include "Scratch", "movie-maker", "artrage" and "audacity" and “paint.net”. If you do not have Microsoft Office on your computers it is worth checking out the open source software that is fully compatible with office software.

ROYAL WEDDINGThe Government has announced that there will be an additional public holiday on Friday 29th April 2011. As we are closed on this date, we will take the additional day on Tuesday 3rd May 2011 extending the Easter Holiday by one day and returning to school on Wednesday 4th May 2011.

Well Done, Jessica Crane who earned a Blue Peter badge for her winning story that she sent in to the programme last year!

Healthy Lunch & DrinksNutritional standards for school meals were introduced in 2006 and standards for vending machines, breakfast clubs and tuck shops came into force a year later. In 2008, strict nutrition content guidelines for primary schools were introduced and extended to secondary schools in September 2009. They include maximum/minimum levels of energy or calories and 13 different nutrients, including fat, salt and sugars.

Many of our students eat a healthy lunch from the dining hall each day but there are also a large number who choose to bring packed lunches instead. We have been discussing in assembly what makes a healthy packed lunch and what foods students can eat to be healthy but have an interesting lunch.

According to advice from the Food Standards Agency, a healthy packed lunch should include:• Meat, fish or a dairy source of protein • Starchy carbohydrate, such as a wholegrain sandwich, to provide energy • At least one portion each of a fruit and vegetable or salad • Water or milk to drink, but diluted fruit juice and yoghurt drinks or smoothies are acceptable

The key foods to avoid are:• Sweets and chocolate • Snacks, like crisps, with added salt/sugar/fat • Sugary and fizzy drinks • Deep-fried foods and processed meats • White bread - if children won't eat brown, try whole white sliced bread

You can get sample menus and ideas for packed lunches from many websites including the following:http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/childhealth6-15/Pages/Lighterlunchboxes.aspxhttp://www.goodtoknow.co.uk/recipes/276567/Healthy-kids--lunchboxeshttp://www.food.gov.uk/news/newsarchive/2004/sep/lunchbox2

We also discussed that recently some students have been bringing bottles of pop to school of 1litre and larger and many are bringing energy drinks. As well as helping your child to bring a healthy packed lunch we are asking that they do not bring these large bottles of pop or energy drinks to school. We do encourage them to drink plenty of fluids through the day but this should be water in lesson times and preferably water, squash or another suitable drink for break and lunchtimes.
