Fr. Anthony’s Faith Formation Corner Matthew 5:17-27: Going Beyond the Superficial Aspects of Religion

Jesus continues with his famous “Sermon on the Mount,” (Mt 5-7). Two Sundays ago we heard about the Beatitudes. Last Sunday, Jesus called his disciples “salt of the earth” and “light of the world.” Today we hear about the so-called antitheses; namely, Jesus saying to his disciples: “You have heard that it was said such and such… But I say to you so and so.” The Lord makes it very clear that he has not come to abolish the law and the prophets (of the Old Testament), but that he has come to fulfill (5:17). Any attempt to set the Matthean Jesus against the Law of the Old Testament is futile. [The Matthean Jesus is the Jesus presented/portrayed in the Gospel of Matthew]. However, Jesus does want to perfect the Law. He does not want his disciples to stop at the basic requirements of the Law, but to go a step or two beyond it. Again, this is a challenge for us Christians to reexamine our commit-ment to discipleship. How far are we willing to go? Or are we happy just to stop at the minimal requirements of our faith? As I mentioned before, for many Catholics, religion is simply a matter of keeping the commandments in order to go to heaven and to avoid hell. There are rules and rules, and more rules to be followed. A good num-ber of Catholics may think that they do not have to search for God, since they knew him already. But in reali-ty, all they have known is the Church as an institution that gives them comfort and security. They do not really know God: they just know the commandments! There may not be any joy in their worship of God. The Lord challenges us not to stop at the superficial level of religion, but to go beyond: “You have

heard that it was said… but now I challenge you to take a step further.” We are called to experience God and his presence. We are called to develop a relationship with God that goes beyond the external demands of the law. This is the kind of relationship that can be best summed up in the beginning of St. Augustine’s auto-biography The Confessions: “Oh Lord you have made us for yourself and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”

Though little is known about St. Valentine, we do know he was martyred in Rome in the third cen-tury for converting others to Christianity. In giving his life to lead others to Christ, he lived out Jesus' words: "No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends" (Jn 15:13), a fitting legacy for the patron saint of love.

The Pastoral Services Appeal for 2017 (PSA) will start at our Parish next weekend, February 18 & 19. It is an annual fundraising project to support Diocesan pastoral ministries and St. Barbara Parish. The tagline for this year’s PSA is KNOW, LOVE, SERVE. Việc cử hành Tuần Lễ Hôn Nhân Toàn Quốc tại Hoa Kỳ bắt đầu từ năm 2002, phát xuất từ Tuần Lễ Hôn Nhân Quốc Tế. Ngày Hôn Nhân Thế Giới, cử hành hàng năm vào Chúa Nhật Thứ Hai của tháng Hai bắt đầu từ năm 1983 do World-wide Marriage Encounter khởi xướng.

Trong một lá thư gửi các vị giám mục Hoa Kỳ ngày 16 tháng Giêng, Đức Cha Malone cho rằng Tuần Lễ Hôn Nhân Toàn Quốc Hoa Kỳ từ 7 tới 14 tháng Hai và Ngày Hôn Nhân Thế Giới, Chúa Nhật 8 tháng Hai là cơ hội “để cử hành hồng ân và hồng phúc của hôn nhân và củng cố cũng như hỗ trợ các cặp đính hôn và kết hôn”.

Si vas más allá del asesinato verás la ira que corroe nuestra compasión. Si vas más allá del falso testimonio (perjurio) verás las mentiras y engaños que producen este compor-tamiento. Nuestra vocación es elegir la vida para nosotros mismos, y tomar un camino a través de nuestro mundo que haga la vida posible y más abundante para otros también.

Celebrating VOCATIONS during Catholic Schools Week, St. Barbara Catholic School stu-dents were blessed to hear the stories of how God called each of our guests to their vocation . Fr. Thai proudly claimed he too went to Catholic school in Vietnam. Doing a little kick to show his skills, he was very funny saying he only went to the seminary to play soccer not really thinking of becoming a priest. Fr. Tuan wanted to be a businessman and make money. But a quiet life of prayer is what attracted him to become a priest. He mentioned all the parishes he has served in the Diocese. Fr. Tuan passed out lucky money to all the students and staff wishing them a Happy New Year. Sr. Grace wanted to be a fashion designer and see the world as a flight attendant. She also wanted to get married and have children, hav-ing many men who wanted to marry her. One day, one seriously asked her to marry and she was surprised to hear herself say “no” because she wanted to be married to God. She said the religious life is never boring. She put on a magic show which amazed the students. Each said that they never planned to be a priest or sister, but God had other plans for them. Each of them said that their calling makes them very happy, that it is a wonderful life of prayer, serving, and doing God’s will. We thank them for sharing their stories with the students. May God bless them always! PLEASE PRAY FOR VOCATIONS FOR OUR STUDENTS.
