Wild turkeys are easily identifiable because of their large size, naked head and fan-shaped tailed so often displayed by males during the breeding season in spring. While these birds are not native to North Dakota, they’ve been here long enough to seem as if they’ve grown with the wooded habitat scattered across the state.

Ring-necked pheasants were first introduced in North Dakota more than a century ago. Following later intermittent introductions in the 1920s, populations quickly increased and reached all-time highs in the 1940s because of an abundance of idle land on the landscape at the time.

A mix of Canada and snow geese dot the sky and rest on the ice at Long Lake National Wildlife Refuge during the spring migration. The refuge in south central North Dakota was aptly established in the early 1930s as a migratory bird refuge by President Herbert Hoover.

APRILCanvasbacks have long been prized by hunters as sporting birds and wonderful table fare. While both males and females can be distinguished by long foreheads that slope into their bills, it’s the males, such as the one pictured here, that sport a chestnut-colored head. Canvasbacks begin arriving in North Dakota in spring when suitable habitat becomes free of ice and snow.

A mature female Baltimore oriole isn’t as easy to identify as the bright orange and black-capped mature male. Even so, a mature female oriole is a handsome bird that, like her male counterpart, can be found in woodlands and suburban neighborhoods with large shade trees.

A nice summer smallmouth bass from Lake Audubon in McLean County. In a state where walleye receive most of the fishing pressure from anglers, smallmouth bass, along with a number of other fish species, are often overlooked.

The purple coneflower can be found over much of the state, except in the northeast. The native wildflower stands anywhere from 12-24 inches, is purple to whitish in color and blooms from mid-June to mid-August. Photographed along the shoreline of Lake Sakakawea, the purple coneflower prefers rocky prairie hillsides and weakly developed soils.

While there is some variance when whitetail fawns are typically born – sometime in May or June – they all hit the ground no matter the month with coats dotted with white spots. The spots help in camouflaging the young animals from predators in the first few months of their lives, but are long gone by the time North Dakota’s deer gun season opens in early November.

Sandhill cranes fly with their necks stretched out and long legs and feet trailing behind. Typically, during spring and fall migrations, you hear these big birds long before you see them. Sandhill cranes give loud, rattling bugle-like calls that can be heard from long distances.

Because a beaver’s front legs are shorter than its hind legs, it walks with an awkward gait on land. In the water, however, North America’s largest rodent is a graceful and efficient swimmer, propelling itself with slow and deliberate kicks from its webbed hind feet.
